What Makes Us Different

• JMS has a dedicated Editorial Office, located in Durham University, UK, and managed by Margaret Turner.

• JMS does not use Manuscript Central: all correspondence is handled personally by the members of the Editorial Office, so whether it is via telephone or email your contact will always be with a person.

• JMS has an inclusive ethos and is open to a wide range of methodological approaches and philosophical underpinnings.

• JMS Editors cannot publish in JMS, aside from Editorials and occasional Introductions to commissioned content.

• JMS Editors consult another member of the editorial team in the latter stages of the revision process to ensure consistency in the decision making process.

• As part of our commitment to quality, we have recently revised our submission guidelines extensively to improve their clarity. We have also introduced a submission checklist for authors and will now use iThenticate to screen papers where appropriate.

• JMS Editors have a fixed term and may not publish in the journal during that term, with the exception of editorials and introductions to commissioned content.

• JMS Editors will ensure that submissions receive an objective and unbiased initial evaluation and, should they be sent for review, that they will be reviewed by appropriate and suitably qualified reviewers and that the process is fair, unbiased and timely.

• JMS has an appeals process and will respond promptly to any complaints.

• JMS Editors will investigate fully any cases of alleged misconduct at the journal.

Journal Publishing in Academia

Arguably the currency of academia is reputation and journal publishing is a prime example of this. There are no charges for submission or publication and no royalties are received by authors. The benefit to both journal and academic is reputation. Tenure decisions, career progression and funding are often very much dependent on publication record.

Reviewing is a purely voluntary activity, despite the time and effort it takes. It is generally considered to be beneficial for various reasons:

• Improves your own scholarly skills• Allows you to see what’s being currently researched in your area of

interest• Provides the opportunity to connect with others in the field• May provide ideas and direction for your own research• Editorial Board membership is viewed favourably• Sense of pride in seeing work published that you have helped authors to

complete• Giving back to the community

Review Process

JMS is committed to providing timely and constructive feedback to authors to ensure an effective and efficient review process.

• JMS operates a double-blind peer review process.

• Any paper that is to go out for review may be screened for overlap with previous papers using the iThenticate software.

• Papers that go out for review typically receive three reviews drawn from our Editorial Board as well as ad hoc reviewers, and we aim to provide a decision within approximately three months.

• Typically, manuscripts will be revised two to four times before acceptance, however, we endeavour to make a decision regarding eventual publication after the second revision.

• Time from acceptance to appearing in print is approximately one year.
