‘TIS THE SEASON This is the season of family and love and most of all giving. We give gifts to our loved ones, friends and others to show appreciation for all they have done for us through out the year. It’s also a special time for us all at Driving Miss Daisy as we get into the spirit with our special festive Daisy Experiences.

There is fun and adventures to be had with your local Daisy. Call your Daisy to go and see the Christmas lights in your town, enjoy singing along at the Christmas Carols, or attend a special festive church service.

A Driving Miss Daisy Experience can be for one, or get a group together and share the costs and have your own festive get together at your favourite café or simply a drive to stroll in the sunshine and enjoy an ice cream.

Aging experts agree that it’s good for you to keep active and importantly keep your social networks active. This particularly helps with depression and whilst it is a festive time of year it can be lonely for some, so do reach out and help each other. Talk to your Daisy they will know the local activities that may be of interest to you and your friends.

Driving Miss Daisy can solve the Christmas dilemma of a gift to buy or receive. What better idea than a Driving Miss Daisy Experience gift voucher that can be bought directly from your local Daisy. This has traditionally been a wonderful gift that family can give you, so don’t forget to drop them a hint. A Driving Miss Daisy gift voucher creates memories, which is something very special, and you can use anytime you wish throughout the year.

Remember, Driving Miss Daisy accepts the TMS cards (“half price taxi chits”), providing driving discounts on trips.

Have a Wonderful Festive Season.

Melanie Co-Founder

2019 is nearly over, we have witnessed many changes at Age Concern Whanganui. Firstly, we had a change of Manager, with Michelle now at the helm, we are sailing along. Sadly at our AGM in August we farewelled Board member, Toots Mohi, who had given us 10 years service. Later Peter Allison resigned after a second term of 4 years on the Board, both had generously given their time. We welcomed 4 new Board Members , Helen Bourne (as Secretary), Josh Chandulal MacKay, Jackie Plumridge, and Jo Thomson. These people have skills and knowledge that will be of benefit to us all. I am confident Age Concern Whanganui is going ahead, already lifting its public profile with the International Day of the Older Person film afternoon, plus other initiatives. To celebrate this Day we held a very successful afternoon showing the wonderful old movie Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid. The movie was followed by afternoon tea, raffles and spot prizes. Such was the success of this event we plan to hold 3 or 4 during the year, starting in March. So watch this space, as they say. The following day a sponsored morning tea was held for the over 90 year olds with beautiful china and food.I always get a feeling of pride when I see the numerous articles and photos in the various local newspapers about Age Concern. This is excellent, for keeping everyone informed of what we do, and the many services we offer. We still have lots more exciting things to look forward to next year.Meanwhile thank you all, especially Volunteers, Members and Staff for your support, and all that you contribute to making Age Concern Whanganui the successful organization that it is. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year.

Alzheimers WhanganuiWe are very excited to announce the launch of Dementia Friends, our new outreach and awareness programme.

Dementia Friends learn about Dementia and the impact it has. They then make a commitment to action to help those living with dementia to live well. Dementia Friends choose the action or actions they are comfortable with and able to offer.

Dementia Friends has been informed and shaped by the voices and input of Kiwis living with dementia.

Whether you are a schoolkid or a Chief Executive, a Cabinet Minister or someone in between, you can be a Dementia Friend.

We are inviting everyone in New Zealand to become a Dementia Friend to raise awareness and build a more understanding, inclusive and supportive New Zealand.

To become a Dementia Friend, people complete a short, online programme. The programme includes a short video featuring three Kiwis living well with dementia.

To find out more about becoming a Dementia Friend go to www.alzheimers.org.nz and show your support for people living with Dementia in your community.

SUPPORTING GRANDPARENTS

(Transport available)

Do you Know Someone who would Like More Company? Are you feeling that you spend too much time on your own? Maybe you can’t get out much these days and would enjoy company, a chance to chat and share an interest? Are you also over 65, unable to drive, living alone, without local family and with frail health? Age Concern Whanganui has an Accredited Visiting Service. The service has caring volunteers who are keen to spend time with an older person. Many of them are older people. Our volunteers visit their special person for about an hour each week. They tell us that they enjoy the opportunity to get to know someone, and that they benefit and learn from the experience.A regular visit is something to look forward to. Our co-ordinator, Clare Fearnley, can match you with a volunteer who shares your interests, and who would like to get to know you. We’ll find the right visitor, the right company - for you. Having a visitor can make a real difference. These are some of the things people have told us about having a visitor:

“Joan has become a very special friend to me. She keeps in touch regularly, especially if I am unwell. We have lots in common. I am very happy that she has come into my life.” “I could not be more delighted with my visitor. She brings intellectual stimulation and love into my life. And humour!” “I am not so lonely, and feel I have a friend.” “I have someone of my own.”What they do together is varied. This has included:

book swaps, bottling, playing music, knitting, making plans for the garden, discussing news and current affairs. Over time, we notice that people’s health and wellbeing improve, they regain some independence and make other social connections. Some visitors bring their dog or their children. Quality friendships can develop with the visitor becoming a trusted fun buddy – for example, “she is almost a family member”. Clare, the visiting service co-ordinator, will meet you at home to get to know you and find out about your interests. If the service is a good match for you, then she will work to match you with one of our volunteers, who has been carefully chosen, trained and police checked. The volunteer will visit you for about an hour each week. Clare will keep in touch to make sure you’re both enjoying your visits. If there’s a problem, we’ll work with you to solve it. If you or someone you know would like to know more, simply call us on 06 347 1799 or pop into our centre at 164 St Hill St 9-3.30 for more information.

The Little Black Book of ScamsThe Little Black Book of Scams has been produced by the Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC). It is the first New Zealand edition following the release of a similar booklet in Australia. Little Black Book of Scams Commission for Financial Capability. The CFFC’s Fraud Education Manager, Bronwyn Groot, says scams are sophisticated, constantly changing and causing devastating losses to New Zealanders.“We needed a resource that people could download to read and share to help everyone raise awareness about the different types of fraud. This booklet could be given to friends or family members or distributed among community groups.”Kiwis’ financial loss through fraud is increasing. Netsafe reported $10 million lost last year, and that figure was exceeded in the first quarter of this year. Most scams go unreported, and Netsafe estimates New Zealand may be losing up to $500 million each year to cybercrime and scams run through the email, phone calls, text, mail and door knocks. The Little Black Book of Scams outlines how scammers target their victims and trick them into parting with their money, gives tips on how people can protect themselves, points out the ‘red flags’ that give away a scam, what to do if you’ve fallen for one, and the various agencies to which you can report different types of scams."Scammers’ methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated and harder to spot - anyone can fall for them. One of our aims is to shift the blame from the

victims to the scammers,” says Groot. The Little Black Book of Scams has been produced by the Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC) and was published last year.GOLDEN RULES:* Hang up on unprompted telemarketers* Send doorstep salesmen packing* Delete uninvited email/text approaches

Staying Cyber SmartCyber attacks are becoming more frequent, and they can affect anyone. It’s not just large organisations or businesses who are affected — small businesses and everyday New Zealanders are at risk too. Many of these attacks aren’t targeting anyone specifically but are looking for easy ways to get money or information. Most people don’t think a cyber attack will happen to them. This year, we’re telling people to ‘make sure of it’, and are providing four simple security measures that will safeguard against common attacks. Here are four ways to prevent you or your business being the target of an attack: 1. Use a password manager It’s really important that your passwords are different and strong, but it can be hard to remember them all. The easiest way to remember them and keep them secure is to use a password manager. It’s like an online safe that stores and manages your passwords for you. You’ll only have to remember the one master password for your password manager, and it’ll do the rest.

2. Turn on two-factor authentication Turning on two-factor authentication (2FA) to your login process is an effective way of adding an extra layer of security to your accounts. It’s a simple extra step after you log in, such as entering a code from an app. You can enable 2FA on most of your online accounts, and on your devices. You’ll usually find the option to turn it on in the privacy settings. 3. Update your devices When you're alerted to a new software version for your device, don’t ignore it — install it as soon as possible. Updates add new features and fix issues or vulnerabilities that attackers could use to gain access to your information.

Set the updates to happen automatically whenever a new version is available — then you don’t have to think about it! 4. Check your privacy To protect your privacy online, it’s important to know what you're sharing and who you're sharing it with. Attackers could use your information to try and access your data or steal your identity. Check that requests for personal information are legitimate before you give any details. If a company or business asks you for information, think about why they might need it. If you’re not sure it's necessary, don’t provide it.

Report itIf you, your friend, or your business does experience an online incident, report it to CERT NZ. We’re a government agency that helps New Zealanders identify their issues and guides them in resolving them.

Your report is confidential, but the lessons from it can be shared with other New Zealanders. This helps raise their awareness of cyber security and helps them understand how to protect themselves from incidents such as yours.

Trip of a Life TimeVyra’s childhood dream was to travel to Egypt to see the pyramids and she has finally achieved it. She had been putting money aside to pay for her funeral, when her family encouraged her to use this money to make her dream come true. Vyra travelled on her own to Egypt to meet up with the tour group. After 20 hours of flying she says that she was frightened and didn’t know where she was going. She eventually met up with the group who had all travelled from different countries including Iceland, USA and Australia – she was the only kiwi. Her trip included a 3 day cruise on the Nile, a train trip and 9 days in motels! She visited museums, temples and the pyramids, with one of the highlights, sitting on a camel in front of a pyramid. She said another highlight was the food on the cruise which she said was amazing. Vyra says she was treated like a queen. She enjoyed talking to the locals preferring to join an Egyptian family for dinner rather than her tour group. The scariest time was when she locked herself out of her room at 5am. She says she was upset – she cried and wanted to go home. Vyra says she would live in Egypt for the rest of her life if it wasn’t for the heat! For her next adventure Vyra says “I don’t like heights but I would like to go up in a hot air balloon!”

You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it. Margaret Thatcher.

Volunteering for Meals on WheelsDorothy is 97 years old and our oldest Meals on Wheels driver.Dorothy and her friend Eileen have been Meals on Wheels volunteers for over 16 years. We had agreed that Dorothy would be a worthy recipient of the River City monthly bouquet – Dorothy does not like a fuss and would prefer that we gave her recognition in throwing out the challenge to others to sign up as Meals on Wheels volunteers.Dorothy describes herself as “naughty” – We say that Dorothy is fabulous!Meals are delivered weekdays with frozen meals delivered on Fridays. A delivery takes approximately 1 ½ hours – once you get to know the route it’s a piece of cake! Meals are delivered to all suburbs so you may get to visit areas of Whanganui that may be new to you.Assisting with Meals on Wheels is recommended to new Whanganui residents – It is a great way to see our beautiful city. For more information call Janet at Age Concern Whanganui Ph 345 1799, she would love to hear from you.
