editor’s note

Wow, is it just me or is October a crazy-busy month! We celebrated several birthdays, took part in countless school events, I ran (I use the term ‘ran’ loosely) in my first half marathon, and on, and on and on. I’m so glad it’s over and I’m so looking forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons with my family and friends.

Thanks for a great response to our Best For Families reader survey. We’ve received so many submissions already and there’s still time to get your vote in for your favorite things in Wichita. Use the ballot in this magazine or go online to www.wichitafamily.com and cast the ballot there.

We hope you’re enjoying the several new additions to the magazine. Local mom Jenae Crowley is giving us a treat each month with her column on being a parent to young children. Contributor Erika Marie has been working hard to fill the magazine with a calendar of fun things for families to enjoy in the area so don’t miss that section this month!

We also added a new series on Mompreneurs. The past couple issues have run stories on a local mom who designs and creates hand-stamped jewelry and a mom who has an in-home food preparation business. It’s definitely amazing to see how these moms are making the home business work for them. This month you’ll meet a mom who is designing and manufacturing jewelry made of glass in her late daughter’s honor.

Are you a mom who has started a business and would like to be considered for an upcoming issue? Send me an email at [email protected] with details on you and your venture!

Nancy Ludlum is never far from her sketchbook. She carries one with her almost everywhere, she even has a small one that she sticks in her purse in the event

that inspiration hits her when she's out and about.

Inspiration can come from many places, says Nancy, who designs and manufactures a line of original jewelry with her husband, Frank.

Inspiration can come from nature, from a picture, from an event. In fact, the past two years have been a roller coaster of events that Nancy and Frank never expected to experience.

The couple moved to Kansas in September 2008 when Frank started a job in Newton. Just a couple days later, the Ludlums received news that changed their lives in an instant.

Early in the morning on Sept. 11, 2008, Nancy and Frank's only child was killed in a car accident. Twenty-eight year old Joy died instantly when her car collided with a logging truck that had made an illegal U-turn.

The news devastated the couple. Joy was everything to them. But rather than letting the pain of the loss eat away at them, they chose to keep her joyful spirit alive in whatever way they could.

“We just look at it this way,” says Nancy. “It's better to take the lemons we were given and make lemonade than to wind up just being sour the rest of our lives.”

On the first anniversary of Joy's death, the couple took a trip to Eureka Springs.

“We decided to always do something fun, try to have a good time and remember her on that day,” says Joy.

During that trip the couple saw and fell in love with glass products and they decided to look into what it would take to begin a glass jewelry line of their own.

A year and a lot of work later, the Ludlums have turned their discovery into a family business. Imaginary Designs is a line of one-of-a-kind, hand-made necklaces, bracelets, pendants and more.

Frank was laid off from his job and now works full time for Imaginary Designs as the glass master and handles the business side of things. Nancy's mom is also involved in the business on a daily basis, assembling items in the Ludlum's basement which has been transformed into a full-service workspace equipped with a kiln, many jewelry samples and much more.

Nancy, who has a background as a floral designer, has been able to take her branding, style and marketing skills to a whole new level with the jewelry business.

“I flew to California to take classes,” says Nancy. “I'm hoping sometime soon to start teaching people around here. I used to teach floral design and I would love to be able to teach, to

on a local Mompreneur

be the go-to person for glass.”

Imaginary Designs has several lines of products and uses a variety of different glasses to create unique, breathtaking jewelry. The glass pieces shimmer and glimmer and some even seem to change colors based on what color of clothing it is worn with.

The average cost of an Imaginary Designs piece of jewelry is $20. Much of their inventory can be seen at www.imaginarydesigns.net and can be purchased online as well.

The couple travels to Canton, Texas where they sell their items at a 4-day show each month. The city-wide event draws shopper from surrounding states and around 25,000 to 50,000 people come through each weekend. They also are focusing on growing the website presence and are looking for new ways to get exposure in the area.

“We have lots of plans, lots of dreams,” says Nancy. “We’ll just have to wait and see!”

On November 20 Exploration Place will be transformed from the typical fun-filled attraction to a fun-filled

attraction overflowing with local families who are changing the course of a child's life.

National Adoption Day—a nationwide event celebrating its 10th anniversary this year—is organized locally by Youthville. Last year on National Adoption Day, more than 40 children’s adoptions were finalized on this one day.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Youthville CEO Shelley Duncan. “Every year we’ve had it, more and more adoptions are finalized on that day. It’s really a big celebration.”

Forming a forever family

Early on, Julie Leatherbury learned that she could not have children of her own. After a failed adoption, Julie and her first husband decided to become foster parents to needy children in their area.

It didn’t take long for Julie to realize that this was the parenting arrangement she was meant to be in.

“I just connected with these kids,” said Julie. “And they seemed drawn to me, too.”

Julie and her husband became foster parents to a 10-month-old little girl with special needs and about three years later, in 1995, they adopted the little girl, Chelsea. Two years later the family adopted Amanda, who was 13 years old.

Now remarried, Julie and her husband decided to continue serving as foster parents. Julie’s husband, Dennis, is an agricultural pilot and travels a lot, but the family enjoys visiting him when he’s away on longer trips.

On Adoption Day 2009, Julie and Dennis adopted their third daughter, Tanisha. Tanisha, a freshman in high

school this year in Goddard, and her three biological siblings had been in foster care for years and were anxiously awaiting a forever home.

“After just a few hours with her I knew we were gonna connect,” said Julie.

This year on Adoption Day the family is celebrating once again as Julie and Dennis officially finish the adoption process and welcome Tanisha’s younger brother Ty, a sixth-grader, into the family.

“He stole my heart,” said Julie. “A lot of family is coming to celebrate Adoption Day with us again this year.”

Adoption Day celebration

On Nov. 20, local judges set their courtrooms at Exploration Place and several dozen children will leave the room with official forever families and

many more families will be in attendance to celebrate adoptions done over the past year.

“The judges actually come down to Exploration Place and each family goes into a room and goes through the legal process for adopting the child,” said Youthville’s Shelley Duncan.

All of the required steps have been done before Adoption Day but on this day the paperwork and finalization is done on site.

“There’s excitement throughout the day,” said Duncan. “There’s food and so many people. We have a professional photographer there taking pictures of the families.”

Youthville handles over 200 adoption a year in Sedgwick County and there is a whole department that is in charge of recruiting and educating foster families and adoptive families.

“Ideally, if at all possible, we want the children to be adopted by a family member,” said Duncan. “But if that isn’t possible, about 70 percent are adopted by foster parents.”

But even with so many local children being adopted, Youthville has more than 300 children awaiting adoption in Sedgwick County right now.

“I think the most important thing to me is that kids are actually being adopted and are going to have forever families,” said Duncan. “And we are raising awareness about the need for families to adopt all these other children. Most people don’t even have an inkling that we have this need.”

The adoption process itself is relatively easy, said Duncan. Youthville staff members walk families through each step from training to signing official adoption papers.

To find out information on becoming a foster parent or an adoptive parent, visit www.youthville.org or call 1-800-593-1950 and talk with someone at the agency.

Dr. Susan Lovelle has used her well-rounded medical background to form a plastic surgery practice that

draws patients from around the state and beyond.

With a warm, talented staff and a state of the art office, Dr. Lovelle, a board-certified plastic surgeon, offers her patients a variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Finding her passion and her way to Kansas

Dr. Lovelle is a mother of two and is the wife of Dr. Kevin Allen, a board-certified Ophthalmologist. The family moved to Kansas and Dr. Lovelle started Axtell Plastic Surgery in Newton in 2008.

Kansas is a far cry from where Dr. Lovelle was born and raised. Before turning her artistic talents to medicine, the Brooklyn, New York native was a principal dancer with the world-renowned Dance Theatre of Harlem.

The successful dancer chose to turn her sights on another form of art and pursued her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Lovelle continued her training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center’s five-year residency program in general surgery then completed post-graduate training in plastic surgery and microsurgery at Montefiore Medical Center.

“I love surgery,” said Dr. Lovelle. “And while doing my plastic

surgery rotation I realized I loved the subspecialty. The patients were happy , and I was able to make a huge difference right then and there.”

Dr. Lovelle has been in private practice since 1996. She began her practice in Staten Island, New York, and after a stint in North Carolina where she owned and operated Carolina Plastic Surgery Specialists, Dr. Lovelle and her husband chose to accept positions in Newton. Dr. Lovelle is the first plastic surgeon and Dr. Allen the only cataract surgeon based in Newton.

Newton Medical Center campus.

“The building was brand new,” said Dr. Lovelle. “Our office was built just for us so we were involved in the planning from Day 1.”

That involvement led to an office specifically designed to offer the latest in minor surgery and non-surgical treatments as well as the most comfortable and informative rooms for consultations and follow-ups to surgical procedures.

Surgeries are performed at the nearby Newton Medical Center while minor surgery and non-surgical procedures are done in the office.

“Our procedure room is spacious and well-equipped,” said Dr. Lovelle. “We also have a facial room and an aesthetician here in the office.”

The medical aesthetician on staff, Lauren, is licensed and trained to perform facials, microdermabrasions, peels, full body waxing and even complimentary skin care evaluations.

One of the latest non-surgical procedures that Dr. Lovelle says is relatively new and extremely effective is the Hydrafacial which can be done right in the office.

“It is essentially using a vacuum suction and as it’s doing that it infuses various targeted serums back

into the skin,” said Dr. Lovelle. “We can contour the Hydrafacial for whatever the person wants to treat, such as facial rejuvenation or acne scarring.”

The procedure requires no downtime and can be done on all skin types.

Another popular and new procedure that Dr. Lovelle performs is called CoolLipo. This procedure is done in a surgery room at NewLeaf, a medical day spa in Wichita.

The minimally invasive procedure uses a laser to tighten skin as well as liquefy fat. It is especially effective in the neck, abdomen and arms, said Dr. Lovelle.

In addition to the many in-office procedures offered by Dr. Lovelle, Axtell Plastic Surgery offers major cosmetic and reconstructive procedures as well.

“My biggest cosmetic group is mommies in the 35 to 55 age range,” said Dr. Lovelle. “They have had children and their bodies have been stretched and altered by childbirth.”

Dr. Lovelle can perform breast lifts, augmentation, a tummy tuck, liposuction and more. In fact, the office offers what they call a “Mommy Makeover.”

“Our Mommy Makeover is a great option,” said Dr. Lovelle. “These women come in and say, ‘Please just put me back the way I was.’”

The variety that Dr. Lovelle enjoys in her practice is what keeps her excited and constantly driven to learn new procedures to offer her patients.

“I work on every single part of the body so I can provide services for nearly everyone,” said Dr. Lovelle.

What to expect as a new patient

Before deciding on what to have done or worrying about what it will involve, Dr. Lovelle’s staff invites patients to come in for a consultation.

During the one-hour visit, new patients meet with the patient coordinator, Rachel, then with Dr. Lovelle herself to go over details of what the patient is looking for and what procedures might be the best fit.

“Our office has a very comfortable environment,” said Dr. Lovelle. “Patients meet with our coordinator on a nice couch, not a sterile environment. Most people enjoy coming here, that’s the way we want it.” n

Schools participate in Walk to School Day

Volunteers walk with College Hill students and parents on Walk to School Day.

Students at Benton, Clark, College Hill and Gordon Parks Academy participated in Walk to School

Day on October 6. Volunteers from Safe Kids Wichita Area, FedEx, Via Christi, the Wichita Health and Wellness Coalition and the Sedgwick County Health Department walked with students on their way to school. The volunteers talked with students about safe walking behaviors and held signs

that identified various ways to ensure safe walking conditions for students and other pedestrians. Some students at College Hill had the safe walking message illustrated when a car drove through a crosswalk, even though the driver had a red light. The volunteers reminded students that even though they have a walk signal, they still need to watch out for cars.

Minneha Core Knowledge Magnet celebrated a new life for the

school’s old library on September 16. The school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the library’s remodeling project. In 2003, Minneha had a brand-new library constructed as part of the school’s 2000 bond issue improvements. The old library space was recently remodeled into a state-of-the-art computer lab and art classroom.

“I want to thank the district for their help on this project. It is a great addition to our school. We have one of the best art rooms and computer labs in the district,” said principal Linda Hope.

Eight students helped in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The fourth- and fifth-grade students were selected based on their citizenship and how they reflect the values of Minneha. Every student enjoyed ice cream after the ceremony.

The remodeled section of the school originally served as the school’s gym starting in 1949 and became Minneha’s library from 1957 to 2003.

Playdough is fun for kids of all ages, but did you know it is also great fine motor practice? Young children

need many opportunities to build the small muscles in their hands in order to color, cut, and write with a pencil in the future. What better way to exercise those muscles than with a yummy-scented playdough!

Here is what you’ll need:

1 cup flour

½ cup salt

1 tablespoon cream of tartar

1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil

1 cup water

1 small box of Jell-O® (any flavor)

1. Have your child help you measure and dump all of the ingredients into a medium-sized pan. Stir all the ingredients together.

2. Place the pan on medium heat. Stir continuously until the dough forms a dry-looking ball in the center of the pan (about 5-10 minutes). Continue stirring for an additional minute.

3. Dump the playdough ball onto the counter or a piece of waxed paper. Knead until smooth (but watch out because the dough will be warm). You will need to soak your pan in hot, soapy water as there will be some crustiness

from the playdough left over. It should come off easily once it has been soaked for at least an hour.

4. Cool and store the playdough in a Ziploc bag.

Take it out whenever your little one is

ready to play! Use a rolling pin and cookie cutters to add to the fun. Not only will your child enjoy the texture, but the playdough smells delightful as well! This would also be a great homemade gift for Christmas or birthdays.

Teaching financial skills to our childrenin today’s complex financial world is as critical as teachinghunting and farming skills to children hundreds of yearsago. However, there are studies that suggest there hasbeen a recent decline in financial literacy among highschool teenagers. So what can we do to teach our childrenfinancial skills?

Start with yourself. While the outside world certainly has an influence, par-ents impart the most critical money lessons to children. They do this by what they say and do. Think about yourown attitudes and habits toward money. Are you a goodsaver, a wise spender? Are your experiences and financialknowledge something you would be proud to teach yourchildren — or something you would not knowingly want topass on? Thinking about this might help you better teachyour child.

Use an allowance or commission. An allowance or commission is typically a child’s first ex-perience in managing money, and it can be a good money-teaching tool. Let children be responsible for certain ex-penses with their allowance or commission.

Give, Save & Spend.Help your children determine what to do with every dollarthey receive or earn. Many experts suggest that you create3 Envelopes: Give, Save & Spend. First, have your child put10% or more into their “Give Envelope.” Next, havethem determine something they’d like to save up for andhave them put another percentage in their “Save Enve-lope.” Have them draw the item they are saving up for ontheir envelope so they’re not tempted to take the moneyout and spend it on the spur of the moment. And finally, put the remaining amount in their “Spend Envelope,”which will give them some freedom to blow it on whatthey wish. This is a process and takes discipline on yourpart as a parent. Your efforts will benefit you, your chil-dren, your children’s children...for years to come.

Let them make mistakes.Inevitably, the more freedom you give children in manag-ing money, the more likely they’ll make mistakes. That’sgood, say experts, because it’s an important way to learn.Better to make a $50 mistake today than a $50,000 mis-take later.

Watch what you say.Monitor how you respond to money questions. Make itclear that you don’t spend money every time just becauseyou have it, and that you’re choosing not to spend it nowbecause you want to put the money to other uses later.

Discuss household finances. As children get older, consider showing them how youmake some of your household financial decisions. Moneyis often a taboo topic, even within families. But showingchildren how you are contributing to their welfare, such assaving for their college education and how you make in-vestment and spending decisions can provide excellent“real life” lessons.

Ask an advisor for ideas. Some advisors teach children about finances, or will offerideas to clients. Consider contacting a financial advisorwho can help you help your children better understandfinancial responsibility.

Practice what you preach.Ask your financial advisor to help you to create a plan andfollow it. These same ideas can help you to make the mostout of your financial situation and future opportunities. Many times it’s hard to create and reach your financialgoals on your own so ask a financial advisor for help. Thesame rules apply for you as you lay out for your chil-dren...you’ll learn the hard way or the right way!

You have heard about it,

NOW IT IS TIME TO SEE IT!

DifferentThan Any OtherTanganyika has created a Wildlife Park that breaks the mold of typical zoos. The grounds are open and inviting, providing the ultimate place for animals and people to be together in harmony. Walk with the Kangaroos, feed Rainbow Lorikeets and African tortoises, visit the Giraffe feeding post or swing over to Lemur Island and feed the Ring-tailed lemurs, or go for a stroll atop a camel. Now you can even feed the Indian rhinos and ride the horses.
