From Friends of Second Marsh Staff & Board of Directors. FSM would like to welcome our newest staff member, Christine Dorie. Christine worked at our Kids in the Marsh summer day camp from 2011 through to 2013 and then continued to be involved with FSM through volunteering. Christine will be with us a for a few months to assist with social media and planning for on- going projects and programs. Welcome! Geng Some ‘Green Time’ T hanks to everyone that came out to our Winter Walk & Chickadee Feeding Event on Sunday, December 2 and enjoyed some outside time also known as ‘green time’. The weather held off and we enjoyed an interpretive guided hike lead by FSM staff Karen, sampled some Cedar Tea, decorated some tree cookies and of course fed some Chickadees. Thanks to Julia and Olivia for volunteering. The event was held on a portion of the Marsh- land Trail. This section of trail recently reopened after being closed for 2 years. The ash trees in the area were affected by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and they were cut down. With less tree cover, the area has transformed into a shrubby meadow with goldenrod and asters. We are looking forward to seeing what the area looks like in the spring time. If you enjoy being outdoors, consider taking a hike on the Marshland Trail at the McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve. We had a great summer at the Kids in the Marsh

camp. Thanks to the financial support of Ontario

Power Generation (OPG) and General Motors of

Canada Company (GMCC), we were able to do some new things this summer with our partici-

pants. Funding from OPG was used to do special

crafts and activities throughout the summer such

as roasting hotdogs and marshmallows as seen in

the picture. Funding from GMCC was used to do

a butterfly release on McLaughlin Bay Wildlife

Area during our Bugs & Butterflies week.

KIDS IN THE MARSH

Highlights from 2018 FEATHERED FRIENDS FESTIVAL

With over 530 visitors, the festival was

a great success. We had 9 community groups in attendance, guided hikes,

face painting, crafts, bird and bee

house building, bird banding, pollina-

tor garden planting, animals from

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue and a

live bird show by Speaking of Wildlife.

Thank you to all the volunteers that

helped at the event in different ca-

pacities. Thank you to Ontario Power

Generation (OPG) for sponsoring the children’s activities. Thank you to the

festival sponsor, General Motors of

Canada Company (GMCC).
