A wetland can be considered an area with large bodies of water that stand still and lie low. Water levels in wetland areas vary throughout the year and are commonly referred to as marshes, bogs and swamps. Be sure to bring your boots! The climate tends to be humid, which is very conducive for the success of plant and wild life. Wetlands are very good for the health of the planet. Wetlands can store excess rainfall and also filters much of the water that passes through it. The wetlands have MORE animal diversity than ANY other biome! Make sure you bring a good camera! THE EVERGLADES

The Everglades are located in the south of Florida and has two seasons: wet and dry.

In the summer or wet season temperatures range in the 90s and this wetland receives frequent thunderstorms and most of its rainfall during this time, which is about 60inches!

In the winter or dry season there

can be occasional cold fronts, and has less humidity during the summer. This is also the best time to view wildlife!

WILDLIFE

The wild and plant life of the everglades is incredibly diverse and well adapted to a watery lifestyle. There are 50+ species of reptiles, 15 species of amphibians, 40+ species of mammals, 300+ fish, 5000+ insects, and 360+ species of birds!

The American Alligator is the apex predator of the Everglades and was once hunted to dangerously low numbers for its skin. Thanks to conservation efforts in the Everglades their numbers have returned to healthy levels and you can enjoy these massive animals that have remained unchanged for millions of years, truly a living dinosaur.

The Everglades has been called a river of grass due to the plant known as sawgrass because of its serrated edges.
