Issue six Wet, cold and windy conditions graced the Stirling Uni course for the 2014 BUCS XC Championships hosted by the University Athletics Club. It proved to be a successful championship with plenty of mud and a cracking atmosphere created by the 1000 plus athletes who travelled from Aberdeen to as far south as Southampton. The first race of the day was the Men’s A race which featured the top 6 athletes from each Uni completing one small and 3 large laps. Over the 11km's the expected battle between St. Mary's Uni and Birmingham developed. Eventually, St. Marys' Richard Goodman pulled away from 2012 Champion Jonathan Hay to take the title. Stirling Uni AC's highest placed runners were Russell White (51st) and Alex Hill (97th) with the top 4 finishers contributing to the 21st place team result. Other SUAC finishers - Gregor Turner (157th) Scott Green (148th) Andrew Gilmore (185) Kevin Schenk (210th).

Next it was the turn of the women to tackle a 6.5km race on the course which had been nicely churned up by the A race. Over the 2 large laps another tussle emerged. Last year’s winner Emelia Gorecka (Royal Holloway) was beaten to it by GB Triathlete Georgia Taylor - Brown (Leeds Met). Rhona Auckland of Edinburgh Uni came home in third for the standout performance from Scottish athletes. Stirling Uni AC again had two top 100 finishers through Alex Lamond (52nd) and Danielle Beattie (90th) adding to Catherine Mercer (232nd) to make the 3 places for a 23rd place team finish. Other SUAC finishers - Amy Hendry (235th) Rebecca Carpenter (341st) Sarah Millar (290th).

The final race of the day was the Men’s B race, who had to endure the muddiest of the conditions. Over the 8km race the usual dominance of St. Mary's was again on show as they finished with 8 athletes in the top 10 and a 1, 2, 3. Jack Partridge was the man who got the victory over the small and 2 large laps. Jamie Crowe was the stand out performer for Stirling Uni AC as he came home in 53rd as part of the 4 SUAC team finishers who placed 37th. Other SUAC finishers - Iain Gilmore (135th) Jonathan Adam (198th) Matthew McKenna (230th) Owen Solley (339th).

Kevin Schenk (SUAC XC Captain)
