Dear Readers, Happy 2016 to all of you! In my world, this is no ordinary year. 2016 is

the year I celebrate being a half century old! Somehow, it seemed this milestone would never happen to me, yet here I am joining this illustrious group of friends and

family who have already initiated into the 50’s club. I feel mentally, emotionally and physically ready to say, “I’m 50!” and not dread it.

Yes, it’s only a number. Yes, you are only as young as you feel. Yes, the best is yet to come. Yes, yes, yes...I KNOW! But just like every new year brings clarity on resolutions

unresolved, the 50 milestone (much like the 40 milestone) has you really looking at your life through a microscope. You analyze what happened to get you to this exact point on your

timeline and you look at the points you hope are yet to come, thinking about where and who you want to be when that time comes.

I spent the first four decades of my life trying to be what I thought was expected of me and the last decade becoming the me I was always hoping I was strong enough to be. That, in and of itself, has been quite the adventure into self discovery. I let a lot of my life happen to me and that ended when I turned 40 because, upon reflection at that milestone/timeline point, I realized that I truly had no one to blame but myself for not getting the life I wanted to live or becoming the person I wanted to be, a happy one.

Recently, as many avid readers of Sports & Activities Directory know, I have begun setting bucket list goals for my year. Last year, I accomplished 3 of my 5 items and made a good attempt at the last two on the list. Could I have done better? Absolutely! However, had I not written down those 5 things and committed myself to them, the first three likely would not have happened at all, just like in the years passed. I am very happy with my results and the experiences I made happen. I encourage everyone to set and commit a few specific bucket list items to accomplish in 2016 (losing weight is not a bucket list item, but running a half marathon is a perfect one).

As the big 5-0 looms out there in 2016, I want to stand on that point on my timeline with a big smile on my face because I will be doing what I want to do, when I want to do it with the person/people whom I want in my life. I call that mentality “Living Large.” It’s not about money or travel or having things or going places...it’s about living in a state of happiness. A happiness that comes because you get it, finally. One life where tomorrow

isn’t promised, one period of time to make your mark an indelible one, and one choice at a time to get you where you want to be – happy.

Who’s happy? I’m happy. With this letter, I hope you are reminded to do the things you can control in your life to either stay happy or become happy. I hope your next milestone, be it turning 50 or another number, finds you on that point of your timeline saying the same thing.

Carpe Diem,

Margot

Dear Residents,Incredibly, another New Year has been ushered in. With each New Year comes

a renewed sense of spirit, hope and commitment. Here in Weston, our staff is no exception. As good as we are, individually and collectively, we are always “Prepared

to be Even Better” – which is the theme of this year’s annual budget. Whether through enhanced training, improved interpersonal skills, the arrival of new equipment, the

opening of new facilities, the improvement of existing infrastructure, or the addition of new team members, we will be better than ever. Looking back at where the City started,

comparing it to where we are today, and looking forward to the course we have charted for the City in the future, we thank every resident and business owner for your participation,

contribution, and involvement which makes Weston the special home that it is.The New Year also rings in a flurry of resolutions, oftentimes ones that have to do with getting

fit or losing weight. In 2015, the City of Weston was recognized by the State Surgeon General as a Healthy Weight Community Champion. We intend to keep that recognition. We encourage

taking yourself and your children to one of our 14 City parks. From playgrounds to sports fields and jogging paths to educational and historical walkways, community really does start in parks.

Utilize our City’s expansive number of maintained sidewalks and bike lanes for walking, jogging or cycling. For safety, always wear a helmet and reflective clothing and from dusk through dawn have front and rear lights on bikes. As a pedestrian, carry a light or glow stick. Making small changes that include physical activity can improve your overall physical and mental health. Please look for our monthly news articles on Healthy Lifestyle and Living tips in Weston’s weekly online E-Newsletter, Newsday Tuesday.

With the winter in Weston comes a host of City events and programs that we encourage you and your family to enjoy. Ring in the New Year on January 9th at our WestonNights Free Outdoor concert series: Weston Rocks - A Classic Rock Party. Enjoy live performances by Mr. Nice Guy from 7PM-10PM in Weston Regional Park. On March 5th we present Latin Explosion with Tito Puente, Jr. bringing tropical, Latin Jazz and club/dance style music onstage in a high voltage celebration. Also appearing is Grammy-winner Marlow Rosado y La Riqueña, incorporating elements of rock, hip-hop, reggaeton and bachata into his hot salsa performance. Every WestonNights event has food trucks on site for a complete date night, or night out with friends and family.

The 2016 Weston Winter Safety Expo will be held on Friday, January 22nd from 6:00PM - 8:30PM. Once again, a unique phenomenon takes place within the confines of Weston’s Tequesta Trace Park… It snows! And, it snows to some great music and entertainment as well. On this night, the Broward Sheriff’s Office brings out “all the big toys”. On display are police, fire and rescue vehicles of all kinds; helicopters, marine unit, bomb squad, and so much more. There are kids’ activities, a winter wonderland photo area, informational

booths and displays and, of course, what would a chilly night in Weston be without hot chocolate and cookies? This is a community event not to be missed.

I wish I had the space to detail all of the upcoming events: the incredibly popular free monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park series continues through April; Symphony of the Americas concerts both ticketed and free; the Foreign Film Series; free professional puppet shows and magic shows at the Weston Community Center; Celebrate the Arts Day in Weston Town Center; the new Weston WorldFest; the annual Royal Egg Hunt; the Mayors’ Chess Challenge and so much more. This list is reflective of the great work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, in partnership with the City, whose members volunteer their time to bring arts programming to residents.

Details of all events can be found on our city website Events Calendar at WestonFL.org/Events and in our Newsday Tuesday E-Newsletter.

Until next time…

WESTON RELAY FOR LIFESATURDAY – SUNDAY, APRIL 9 & 10, 2016 • 4:00PM – 9:30AM

CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL • 18600 Vista Park Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale 33332

WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?• Organized, overnight community fundraising walk• Teams of people camp out around a track• Members of each team take turns walking around the track• Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build

camaraderie• Family-friendly environment for the entire community

Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. But it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave!

WHAT MAKES A RELAY EVENT SPECIAL?Many moments create the unique Relay experience. Event details

vary by location, but all events have key moments in common:• SURVIVORS LAP: During the Survivors Lap, all cancer survivors at

the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. Relay For Life events also recognize and celebrate caregivers, who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer.

• LUMINARIA CEREMONY: The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark; so we can remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past and support those whose fight continues. Candles are lit inside of personalized bags and are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer.

• FIGHT BACK CEREMONY: This emotionally powerful ceremony inspires Relay participants to take action. The Fight Back Ceremony symbolizes the emotional commitment each of us can make in the fight against cancer. The action taken represents what we are willing to do for ourselves, for our loved ones, and for our community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives.

WHY WE FUNDRAISEWhile the American Cancer Society is making progress toward a

world without cancer, only with your dedication and fundraising efforts can we finish the fight against the disease. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer; we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the Relay For Life experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or rob anyone of another birthday. Make sure your team members and donors understand how important their contributions are by sharing how their support is making a difference:

• Research: For more than 65 years, the American Cancer Society has been finding answers that save lives – from changes in lifestyle to new approaches in therapies to improving cancer patients’ quality of life. No single nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization in the US has invested more to find the causes and cures of cancer.

• Hope Lodge®: Where to stay and how to afford accommodations are immediate concerns for cancer patients who must travel away from home for the best treatment. American Cancer Society Hope Lodge facilities provide a free and comfortable place for patients and their caregivers to stay, so they can focus on getting well.

• Road To Recovery®: Cancer patients frequently cite transportation to and from treatment as one of their most critical needs. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program matches cancer patients with specially trained volunteer drivers.

• Look Good…Feel Better®: This free service teaches women battling cancer beauty techniques to help them improve their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Volunteer beauty professionals demonstrate makeup techniques; nail care, skin care, and options related to hair loss.

• Reach To Recovery®: Our Reach To Recovery support program matches specially trained breast cancer survivors with people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and want to talk to someone who has been there. These dedicated volunteers offer understanding, support, and hope.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?Go to relay.ascevents.org to sign up for an event, donate or

dedicate a luminaria.• SIGN UP OR VOLUNTEER: Find an event in your community and

get involved! You can form a team, raise money, join the planning committee, or volunteer. One in 100 people participate or volunteer in Relay For Life events in the U.S. Join us and fight back against cancer! See your event location and date above.

• DONATE: When you donate, you can assign your gift to a specific participant, team, or event. Cancer is an issue that affects us all, and your tax-deductible donation supports the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission.

• DEDICATE A LUMINARIA: One of the most inspiring moments during a Relay For Life event is the Luminaria Ceremony. Honor or remember someone you love that has been touched by cancer through the dedication of a luminaria.

What happens when you take a bunch of middle school girls from Weston to Delray who, along with their parents, are dedicated to the advancement in the sport of lacrosse? Well, add to them the coaching of John McClain of Florida Select lacrosse and you get something truly special.

Recently, the Gold Coast Shootout lacrosse tournament was held in Plantation. The Florida Select 2020/2021 team decided to participate for the fi rst time in the high school division. Even though they did not have one high school player on the team, the girls felt they were up for the challenge. On day one of the tournament, they played three games and outscored their opponents 39 to 1. On this day they played fast, unselfi sh lacrosse against teams such as Florida United and Limitless Lacrosse.

They continued on day 2, right where they left off, by beating a strong high school team out of Tampa in the semi-fi nals, 15 to 1. In the fi nals, they came up against the Storm Purple team. This team is comprised of 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Most of the girls on this Storm Purple Team are starters for their respective high schools with some even attaining the honors of All County, All District and All Region. The game was by far the fastest and most physical game the Florida Select Team had ever seen. However, these young girls were more than up for the challenge. The game ended in a 5-4 win for the Florida Select team! Not bad for a middle school team.

“We give the players in this program the ability to practice for over 6 hours a week in different locations in South Florida. We are an elite travel program that truly helps develop these players to become top notch middle school, high school, and college players,” Coach McClain adds, “Every player on this team believes in themselves and their teammates and it is a beautiful thing to be a part of. They love

this great game and the game loves them. They had an amazing weekend and the coaching staff truly enjoys watching them compete.”

The Florida Select 20/21 team will be traveling to Indiana over the summer to play in the Invitation only National tournament where they will compete with the top club teams in the country.About the Florida Select 20/21 Team

The Florida Select 20/21 is an invitational travel team that only rosters 23 players to play in some of the top tournaments in the country. You can contact John McClain, the director of this program, through www.madskillzlax.com. You can also visit our Facebook pages – Florida Select Lacrosse and/or Madskillz Lax LLC. RUN OVER AUTISM 5K AND...YOU HAVE A MONTH TO FINISH!

April 1 – 30, 2016

Puzzle Peace Now is proud to announce its 3rd Annual Run Over Autism. This virtual, or “DIY” 5K is like no other. Held throughout the month of April, participants and donors alike compete for cash prizes by reaching 3.1 miles on their own time and terms. Did we mention that every person who participates gets a shiny medal? We can’t think of a better way to come together for Autism Action Month.

Puzzle Peace Now, a 501(c)(3) a charity, was founded in 2009 by local mom Kristi Vannatta. Kristi and her husband are parenting an eleven year-old son who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 3. Proceeds from this event will provide summer camp scholarships to local special needs children.

What’s a “DIY” 5K? A “DIY” 5K is a “race” you can run when, where, and how you like: day or night,

on the road, or in the air conditioning (hello treadmill!). Just set your own course and go for it. Sign up now, race any day in April 2016, and submit your time. Expect to be eligible for prizes in yet to be determined random categories.

Our participants have run, walked, roller-skated, skied, trampolined, dog walked, and even trotted (yes, she walked her horse). There’s more than one way to reach 3.1 miles, so there’s no excuse not to take part! Many participants choose to run in groups with others who have registered. The more the merrier.

Here’s How Run Over Autism Works:Step 1. Register or donate at www.puzzlepeacenow.com. Runners run and spectators

get to sit home in the A/C knowing they gave to a worthy cause. Step 2. Join our Facebook event page. Search for “The 3rd Annual Run Over Autism”

within Facebook, or use the link found at www.puzzlepeacenow.com. Here you’ll be able to post any questions you may have, as well as see how others are getting involved. Most importantly, you’ll post your race results here.

Step 3. Runners, map your race and go for it! Take off ANY time between April 1, 2016 and April 30, 2016. Consider creating a herd. Recruit friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, pets… whomever! Make it your own event.

Step 4. Report your race, time, and fun had by posting a picture or collage on our Facebook event page. You can bet on extra points for creativity.

Step 5. LOCAL runners, you’ll be notified via the Facebook event page (The 3rd Annual Run Over Autism) as to when and where to pick up your medal. Not-so-local runners, expect your medal to be shipped on or before the week of May 1, 2016.

Questions? Post them on the Facebook event page or email Kristi Vannatta at [email protected]. Feel free to invite friends to join the event page, but keep in mind this event is open to only 200 RUNNERS so register early! YOU MUST REGISTER TO RUN. Joining the Facebook page does not register you. There is no deadline for registration, but spots go fast! Nab yours today. Spectators may donate until the end of time.

Register TODAY at www.puzzlepeacenow.comFor more information about autism diagnosis, treatment, and advocacy visit National

Autism Association or Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) online.

Keeping our chi ldren safe needs to be a priority in our lives. As parents, it is our responsibility to make sure we provide children with the skills to act smart, think responsibly and problem solve

effectively. By teaching them these skills, we provide our children with the necessary tools that create

independent and safe thinkers. These “essentials” are a gift parents can give their children and it is a gift that will keep giving throughout a lifetime.

We cannot be with our children every second through their lives. There comes a time when they need to leave the protection of “the nest.” We are neurotic the first time we leave them with a babysitter. The first time they go to a friend’s house without us we’re a little hesitant. The first time they ride their bike alone to a friend’s, we stretch our necks around the corner to watch them as they go and ask them to call when they get there. It continues as they grow, get their licenses and start to drive, attend parties and proms and go off to college. It doesn’t end there, as they buy their first homes, travel, have children of their own and the cycle continues. A parent’s work is never done and the worrying never ends.

How do we teach the skills that are necessary to keep our children safe so that we aren’t in a constant state of anxiety? It begins with understanding that just as parenting doesn’t come with an instruction

manual; children are limited in the skills they are born with that enable them to protect themselves. We don’t wait for children to burn themselves to learn that the stove is hot. We don’t allow them to be hit by a car before teaching them they must look both ways before crossing the street. We are given the responsibility as parents to teach our children the skills to keep them safe. Taking it for granted that children “just know” means not following through on our responsibility as parents.

There are several ways to teach your children these critical skills. Instead of telling your child “No, because I said so,” give them an explanation as to why something is a “no!” Tell them why you need them to check in when they get to their friend’s house. Tell them why they can’t run across the street to get the ball. Explain to them why they need to go with a “buddy” to use the bathroom when they are at the park. When children have the “why” it makes sense to them and they accept the “no” much easier.

Role playing, giving “what if” scenarios and having your children provide the solution, and reading stories together, are additional ways to teach kids how to keep themselves safe. Whatever method your family chooses, it is imperative to follow through on this responsibility. We aren’t given many chances, if any at all. Accidents happen and so we need to improve the chances of our children staying safe by being proactive. Enable your children, so that even though you cannot be there protecting them every second, you can breath a sigh of relief because you know what you have taught them.

Caption: Bike repair stations are located in Gator Run Park, Library Park and Regional Park.

By Debby Teich

With 46 miles of marked bike lanes and less traffic than most of its neighboring community, Weston has become well known throughout South Florida as an ideal place to cycle. Now flat tires, slipped chains and loose wheels will no longer pose a problem for the many cycling teams and recreational cyclists that ride and train in the city. The City of Weston Parks and Recreation Department recently installed Fixit bike repair stations in several parks. Although Fixit stations are located in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, the three in Weston are the first known Broward locations.

“I have fond childhood memories of riding down to the corner gas station to get air in my bike tires,” said Parks and Recreation Director Don Decker, who saw the Fixit Repair Stations at a trade show a couple of years ago. “Out here in Weston we don’t have that many gas stations near most of the neighborhoods, so locating these in the parks seemed like good fit.”

The stations provide all of the tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes and derailleurs. The tools and air pump are attached to a stand with stainless steel cables. Users suspend a bike from a hanger arm, which allows the pedals and wheels to spin freely while making adjustments.

Fixit locations contain the following:• A QR code takes smart phone users to a website that has instructions for common bike repairs. • Philips and flat head screwdrivers • Allen wrenches • Headset and pedal wrench • Tire levers

There are currently three bike repair stations located along the routes that cyclists use the most. The locations include: Gator Run Park (along Glades Parkway), Library Park (along Bonaventure Boulevard) and inside Regional Park (near the basketball courts, adjacent to where most weekend bikers park their cars before heading out for a ride).

Decker says that he has had a very positive response to the stations and that the City may add more stations in the future. “I have spoken with cyclists who have happily stumbled on them and put air in their tires,” said Decker. “We have also had people post photos and words of appreciation on Twitter. We will be looking for other locations that make sense based on cycling activity, but there is nothing on order as of now.”

Howard Fine was getting ready to ride with a group that meets at Regional Park when he noticed he had a flat tire and thought he had no way to repair it. “I did not realize that Weston had installed the repair stations,” said Fine. “Without it, I would have had to skip my ride. I am grateful to the City for taking care of its cyclists. It is just one more reason that I am proud to be a Weston resident.”

In 2013, Weston was officially designated as a bronze level, bicycle-friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists. The award recognizes Weston’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies. The new Fixit stations are another example of Weston’s continued effort to enhance the cycling experience.

There are few places that the women from the Broward Women’s Sports Program Recreational Soccer League would rather be on a Sunday morning than playing soccer. The women are passionate about their league. For many, it is the only hour in their week when they take time for themselves. They join the league to get in shape and make new friends, as well as to acquire and/or refine their soccer skills.

Gayle Smitter and Patsy Gibbs co-founded the league 1995. It is open to all recreational-level players age 30 and over and includes players as old as 70. Some played soccer competitively in high school or college, while others are beginners. They are teachers, businesswomen, lawyers and housewives and more, all from a variety of countries, such as the United States, Columbia, Mexico and many others.

“Some of these women are single moms, work two jobs, have special needs children, work or take care of their families,” said Kelly-Anne Cozzati, league commissioner. “The league gives them a chance to spend time with other women and get exercise, while playing a sport they love. It is their ‘me’ time.”

There are currently six teams full of “soccer moms” with 15 players on each. Games are played on Sunday afternoons at Chapel Trail Park, located at 19531 Taft St. The league plays from September to December and from January to April, with the annual family picnic in May. There are no games during the summer months. Players join the league as individuals and are assigned to a team. They are rated and each team is balanced to include a range of experience levels. Players are re-assigned to different teams each season, so that they can meet more people and make new friends. Their teammate one season might be their opponent during the next one.

Some of the more traditional soccer rules have been altered to make the league more beginner-friendly. For example, there is no “off sides” rule, no restrictions on throw-ins, and the on-the-fly substitution rule applies so that players can enter and exit the game more easily. In addition, a goalie “safety area” in front of the net protects the goalies by prohibiting the attacking team from touching the ball while in the safety area. The games are family friendly, offering husbands and children a chance to cheer for their favorite players.

The season ends with a Soccer Bowl, which includes all teams in the league. It follows a single elimination format, with a slight twist. The teams in last place are given the advantage, so the best teams are usually eliminated in the beginning. Losing a game in the Soccer Bowl is not such a bad thing, since each eliminated team gets pizza.

Every year, the league forms a Goodwill traveling team with a double mission of creating goodwill and promoting women’s soccer throughout the world. Team members work at the BB&T Center concession stand during Florida Panther hockey games to raise money and build camaraderie before the trip. The team has already been to places like Venezuela, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Argentina, Scotland, France, Sweden, Peru and Spain and more. They have brought shirts, soccer balls, cleats and shin guards to some of the poorer countries.

It has been nearly three years since adult sports were offered at the Weston YMCA Family Center. Due to popular demand, they are coming back. Beginning in the spring, the YMCA will be offering flag football and volleyball for adults.

“We realized that for too long the adult demographic has been neglected when it comes to athletic activities, and we intend to change that culture,” said Nick Rakestraw, Sports Director of the Weston YMCA Family Center. “Flag football and volleyball are the cornerstones of spring sports for the youth demographic, so we will be extending that offering to men and women over the age of 18.”

Both sports will be offered for an eight-week season from January to March. The cost for flag football is $25 for YMCA members/$60 for non-members and covers the $25 city usage fee. Volleyball is free for YMCA members/$50 for non-members.

“Sports in general offers a unique environment for competition and socialization at any level and age,” said Rakestraw. “In conjunction, it also offers several health benefits by getting players out and active. One of the pillars of the YMCA movement is healthy living - what better way than having fun playing sports?”

Located in the Regional Park, the Weston YMCA Family Center is a 42,500 sq. foot family center dedicated to enhancing healthy lifestyles through programs that build mind, body and spirit. The staff and volunteers are committed to helping children and youth deepen positive values, their commitment to service and their motivation to learn. Annually, the Weston Y serves over 2,000 kids in its sports programs and approximately 500 more in camps and clinics.

“The YMCA designs programs to help families build stronger bonds, spend more time together and become more engaged in a community place to be,” said Rakestraw.

In addition to the adult programs, the Weston Y is currently offering a winter flag football season, which runs from January through March. In the spring, it will offer its signature youth indoor basketball league, with help from Cypress Bay High School and Sagemont School to meet space needs for increasing demand, as well as the spring volleyball league, which kicks off at the end of January. There are various other sports that run throughout the year, including two more seasons of basketball (summer/fall), two more seasons of volleyball (summer/fall), and baseball/t-ball (fall).

The Weston Y has numerous other programs that contribute to youth development. It has one of the largest summer camps in the community for both youths and teens, which includes cooking, performing arts, sports, and more. It also offers three different types of aftercare: sports, performing arts, and Kids Club, as well as a swimming program with lessons for infants/beginners all the way up to a nationally competitive swim team.

The not-for-profit organization also provides assistance through its scholarship campaigns. It has piloted a scholarship program in Weston, entitled “One Team, One Child.” The goal is for each team to give enough to sponsor one child who ordinarily would not be able to participate due to financial constraints. As a result, approximately one in every 10 children participating in sports from the Weston community is receiving assistance.

The Weston YMCA Family Center is located at 20201 Saddle Club Road in Weston. For information, call (954) 424-9622.

Many consider baseball to be the all-American pastime. For years, it has brought families together to watch and play. Brian Piccolo Sports Park and Velodrome offers adults a way to continue to play their favorite sport, have fun, stay fit, and socialize. They can participate in softball leagues in the spring, summer and fall. Spring registration begins in February.

“Whether they are former high school ball players or playing for the first time, people are always excited to come to the park and play,” said Juan Orozco, athletic coordinator. “It serves as an escape from their daily routine. It is also a way for them to stay active and experience the camaraderie of team sports. Most play for both fun and competition.”

Orozco says the league participants are very diverse. While most are in the 30-45 range, there are some players as young as 18 and as old as in their 60’s. Experience levels range from former minor league baseball players and national softball tournament players to people that are playing for the first time. Although most live in the area, some travel from far distances to play.

Teams are made up of business employees, church members and other groups. Anyone interested in playing softball as an individual can sign up on the free agent list.

Teams have the option of having up to 20 players on their roster. There are 10 games in a season, which typically lasts 10-weeks. Each division has its own playoff at the conclusion of their

season. The top four seeds qualify for the playoffs, which consist of two semifinal games and a championship game.

Most divisions consist of six teams. The C and D divisions are the most competitive; E and E1 are for intermediate teams; and E2 and E3 are for recreational/new teams. Although the final schedule has not been set, the following divisions will most likely be offered: Sundays (C, D1, D2, E1, E2, E3), Mondays (D, E), Tuesdays (D, E), Wednesdays (D, E1, E2, E3, Corp Coed 1, Corp Coed 2), Thursdays (E1, E2, E3) and Fridays (E1, E2, Church, Coed).

Men’s C, D, & E Divisions play Sunday mornings, as well as on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings; Corporate Coed Divisions (7 men/3 women) play on Wednesdays and Fridays; Coed Divisions 1 & 2 (5 men/5 women) play on Friday evenings; and Church Division plays on Friday evenings. Orozco says he is in the process of researching the possibility of implementing a Senior Division (50 years older) for future leagues.

“No matter your age, it is never too late to get into sports,” said Juan Orozco, athletic coordinator. “Whether it is at our park or anywhere else, I encourage everyone to go out, get involved, and have fun.”

The FUTSOC Bambinos Academy is a soccer program geared towards children ages 5-9 (U6-U10 cutoff date is July 31st of each year), where at various stages different concepts are being introduced to promote a healthy understanding of how the game is played, a significant social interaction, a strong physical development and the pure enjoyment of the game.

The FUTSOC Bambinos Academy is divided into two groupings: the Bambinos Juniors for players ages 5-6 (U6-U7), and the Bambinos Seniors for players ages 7-9 (U8-U10). Each grouping follows a very well developed curriculum of activities, which are age appropriate and follow both U.S. and International guidelines for youth soccer. Over the years FUTSOC has been able to combine the best elements of these guidelines into its own unique program, where FUN is the primary objective. Decades of experience working with youths has demonstrated that the very essence of any sport is the enjoyment and fulfillment that can be derived. At this stage of early childhood development, there is a greater adherence to the enjoyment and less on the result. Children do not care about the score at this age!

Once again, patterned upon the most innovative models of early youth soccer education, FUTSOC has always structured its programs so that the focus

is primarily on FUN...teaching fundamentals, games, exercise, awareness and cooperation in groups. Our child participants WILL experience a flexible, fun-filled program, which emphasizes enjoyable, exciting and memorable activities in which the beautiful game of soccer can be learned. At this early stage of child development, FUN is the operative word.

At FUTSOC, we have always stressed an exclusive environment of FUN, pressure-free activities and structures, which invariably lead to containing and even eliminating the dreaded burnout and quitting! Today, over 70% of children are dropping soccer by the age of 13, due to unnecessary pressure being placed upon the children by coaches, parents and environments ill suited for children.

All clubs are definitely not the same! At FUTSOC we have always prided ourselves on REAL player development, building honest bonds with our players and their parents, and stressing the importance of good sportsmanship and…FUN!!

The statistics are startling – nearly 10,000 people are killed by drunk drivers and another 350,000 are injured in alcohol-related crashes every year. Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving, drugged driving and underage drinking. It offers programs for students, parents, victims and more.

Heather Geronemus understands the effects of drunk driving first hand, as well as how MADD can help. In 2009, her father, Robert Greronemus, was hit and killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street in South Florida. “Nancy, a victim’s advocate for MADD, reached out to me and took care of me when nobody else could,” said Geronemus. “Here was a total stranger who walked into my life to help me and support me through an impossibly difficult time. I wanted more than anything to give back to MADD, but more importantly, I wanted to be part of a world where nobody would need that call from a stranger ever again.”

In 2010, Geronemus was offered the opportunity to chair Walk Like MADD and raise community awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. This will be her 6th year chairing the Ft. Lauderdale event, which has become the largest and fastest growing MADD 5K in the country. In 2015, approximately 2,000 people attended. They raised $187,000 to provide victim services to those affected by this violent crime, as well as prevention programs for underage drinking throughout Broward County. The 2016 walk will be held on April 24th at 7:30am at Huizenga Plaza.

“Every one of us has the power to stop drunk driving,” said Geronemus. “It’s as simple as deciding to make a choice to always include a safe ride home when your plans include drinking and to have the hard discussions with your children, colleagues, and friends. Every year I have the privilege to see the parents, kids, teachers, businesses, government leaders and law enforcement professionals line up at the start line for Walk Like MADD. Each and every person at that starting line makes a choice to be there – a choice to support and protect their community. And in that moment, it is a choice to save a life. I can’t think of anything more important.”

One of the ways that MADD educates teens on the dangers of underage drinking is through the Power of Youth program offered at public/private schools, as well as churches, synagogues, and community events. Students are often shocked at the statistics and surprised to hear the stories of other families who have been affected by a drunk-driving incident.

“This program educates young teens about making poor decisions that could impact their lives or someone else’s permanently,” said David Pinsker, Florida State Executive Director. “Everyone in middle school and high school needs to hear this life saving message. Everyone thinks it can’t happen to them, but the fact is it can and it does.”

Through Power of Parents, MADD educates parents on how to start a discussion with their teen about the dangers of underage drinking and making good choices. The program is presented at schools, PTA meetings, churches, synagogues, and community events. Typically, parents want to know how kids get access to alcohol, if they should let them drink at home, and what the kids can say when pressured by their peers.

“This program helps to start dialogue between parent and child on a very difficult subject to discuss,” said Pinsker. “Parents tend to think this is just the way it is these days. The reality is that most people don’t have these discussions with their kids until something has already happened and caused damage to someone’s life.”

MADD also provides supportive services to drunk or drugged driving victims to help them cope with the devastating impact of substance impaired driving crashes. It offers court accompaniment, supportive literature, advocating for victims’ rights, the opportunity to meet other victims and more. Victims can meet a MADD advocate in a courtroom or any other place a victim or family member feels comfortable meeting.

“This is the heart of what MADD does as an organization,” said Pinsker. “No one expects to be in this position in their lives and we are there to help guide them through the difficult pieces. We help them legally, as well as through the healing process.”

New Year Resolutions...Looking Back Before Leaping Forward

As the new year approaches, there will no doubt be an abundance of advice columns encouraging us to make meaningful New Year Resolutions – those heartfelt promises we make to put our nose to the grindstone and do better in specifi c areas of our lives. The New Year presents an opportunity to reset the clock and step up to the starting gate once again. For many people, resolutions involve things like getting fi t or quitting smoking. For others, its meeting fi nancial or relationship goals.

In their essence, resolutions are a wonderful idea. They represent an aspiration toward good, toward growth and betterment of our circumstances. To want is hardwired into the human brain – we strive, we seek, we desire, it’s what we humans do best!

However, if we’re not careful, these resolutions can quickly become admonitions of all we lack, whether it be things, qualities or states of being. As we refl ect on the passing year, if we refl ect at all, it is often on past resolutions that we did not keep, or ways in which our lives did not meet our expectations. Setting new intentions from a place of scarcity rather than abundance. When our “Want To” becomes a “Should Do,” our resolution can become a heavy weight rather than an inspiration, threatening to dissolve our resolve.

As you set your eyes upon your goals for the New Year, I invite you to let your vision reach back and acknowledge all that has come before. Consider not only those areas of your life that you want to change or improve, but also the areas where you got it right, taking time to recognize all that has led you to this point where you are ready, willing and able to take on a new challenge.

This is in no way meant to diminish the power of resolve or deny the commitment needed to achieve our goals. Rather it is to suggest that in order to fully throw our weight into each step we take forward, we must take a moment to refl ect on and value the ground we have covered. To truly be “all in” we need to bring all of ourselves to the effort; the victories, the losses and the forfeits.

From this rooted place of awareness and gratitude, your resolutions will refl ect:

1. Where you have been2. Where you are now3. Where you are goingBy contemplating the road we have traveled, we draw upon

the vastness of our life experience as we survey the path ahead.

Where have you been?Take a moment to reflect on choices you have made

regarding your relationships, health, career or business. What

capabilities and character traits have you developed as a result

of your experiences? Pat yourself on the back for those that

serve you well and bear witness to those choices you are less

proud of, recognizing that they have contributed to where you

are now, for better or for worse.

Where are you now? Take a look at your life now. Take inventory. Some of the

decisions and choices you made may have paid off well, while

others may have proved disappointing. What goals did you set

for yourself that you have achieved? Celebrate them. Have

any goals been abandoned? If so, why? By seeing where you

are clearly, you are better able determine the next right step.

Where are you going? As they say, happiness in an inside job. What brings you

joy and contentment? In order to reach your most deeply

held goals, you need to defi ne them. This doesn’t mean you

have to know exactly how to get there. Perhaps your goal is

to be more comfortable with uncertainty, with not knowing,

and to let life unfold with more ease.

To borrow a phrase from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Life is a

journey, not a destination.” Taking pause and giving thanks

for the journey of our lives adds richness to the opportunity

each New Year brings. For each and every experience has

brought us to this very moment, where we stand poised and

open to improving our life in some way. By taking the time

to revisit the experiences that brought us to this moment of

choice, we are able to move forward with greater awareness

and embody our lives, with our selves.

Lisa Lerner has always taught her children, Aaron, 16, and Rachel, 14, that is important to help make the world a better place. Nine years ago, she started Kids Helping Kids to encourage other families to teach their children the same valuable lesson. “Children need to understand that one person can make a difference and that it is their responsibility to volunteer and give back to their community,” said Lerner. “If we can instill the importance of this at an early age, they will see how good it feels to give back and it will become a part of who they are. We all live in this world together and we need to make it a better, kinder place - one person at a time.”

Lerner came up with the idea for the group after she brought her children to help her pack food and deliver it to indigent seniors. When she told her friends what they had done, many of them were eager to do something similar. The organization has grown rapidly through word of mouth and now includes scouting troops, camps and other groups in the community. “It is difficult to find places that younger kids can volunteer,” said Lerner. “Kids Helping Kids is very hands-on. The volunteers actually get to see where their items are being donated, so they have a better understanding of the impact of their efforts.”

For the past nine years, Kids Helping Kids has provided Royal Palm Elementary, an underprivileged school in Lauderhill, with backpacks and supplies for their students. Most of the students cannot afford to purchase their own supplies and budget cuts have limited classroom resources. The families from Kids Helping Kids shop for supplies and visit the school to present the teacher with their purchases. The principal, assistant principal and teachers personally thank each of the volunteers. Last year alone, Kids Helping Kids donated over 500 backpacks, as well as basic items like crayons, pencils, composition books, markers, folders, and more.

“The kids are ecstatic when they get to school on the first day and walk into their

classroom to find new backpacks filled with school supplies,” said Lerner. “This means so much to them. They realize that someone truly cares. It is such a positive way for them to start the school year. Our volunteers also feel great, because they have visited the school and truly understand who they are helping.”

Kids Helping Kids has also been working with Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. The group brings Hanukkah gifts and snacks for the children who have to celebrate the holiday in the hospital. The group has teamed up with the Harvest Drive, which provides less fortunate families in Broward County with a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries, as well as personal and household necessities during Thanksgiving season. For the past five years, Lerner’s son has organized a team for the Dan Marino Autism walk. He sells t-shirts to raise more money and all of his friends join him in his efforts.

Karen Nir’s children have participated with Kids Helping Kids since 2007. Tali, 19, and Eli, 16, have collected backpacks and delivered them to Royal Palm Elementary. “Kids Helping Kids creates a bond with the population served and increases social responsibility,” said Karen Nir. “It has helped teach my kids about empathy and gratitude.”

Lerner brought a modified version of Kids Helping Kids to Temple Dor Dorim. As Social Action Chair for the past five years, she has encouraged and arranged a variety of community projects for the congregation, including building homes for Habitat for Humanity, making and delivering sandwiches for the homeless, painting at Children’s Harbor and more. One of her largest annual projects is Mitzvah Day, when over 200 congregants participate in community service projects on the same day both on and off site. In 2013, Lerner was recognized for her efforts when she was awarded the Community Service Star Award from the American Association of University Women.

For all the benefits that can be accomplished with life insurance, great ideas can be undone by sloppy execution. A recurring error is improper designation of the three parties of interest for every life insurance transaction. When these relationships are incorrectly designated, intended benefits can be needlessly diminished, or undone.

Every life insurance policy has three crucial players. The policy owner is the person or entity that pays the premiums and has the authority to make changes to the policy. The insured is the person whose life is covered by the policy. The beneficiary is the person or the entity designated to receive the insurance benefit when the insured dies. Standard insurance practice says two of the three parties of interest should be the same person or entity. Some examples: In a family insurance scenario, the owner and insured will typically be the same; the insured owns the policy on his/her life, and names the spouse as beneficiary. If a business wants to insure a key employee, the business will usually be both owner and beneficiary. However, if three different persons or entities play the roles of policy owner, insured, and beneficiary, adverse tax consequences may be incurred. This condition is often referred to as a “Goodman Triangle,” in reference to a 1946 court case, Goodman vs. Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. The main thrust of the Goodman case was that the owner of the policy was making gifts to non-owner beneficiaries upon the death of the insured. The tax logic behind this determination is convoluted, but some examples are instructive.

Example 1: A father owns a life insurance policy on his adult son (the insured), and the son’s wife is the named beneficiary. If the son dies, his wife will receive the insurance proceeds tax free. But the way the IRS sees it, the wife has received a gift from her husband’s father, the owner of the policy. This triggers a gift tax assessment against the father.

Example 2: Three shareholders in a C-corporation have a buy-sell agreement drafted. The corporation, as owner, purchases three insurance policies, naming the other two shareholders as beneficiaries for each insured’s policy. Since the three parties are different, the owner (the corporation) is deemed to have made a taxable gift to the beneficiaries (the surviving shareholders) upon an insured’s death. Instead of assessing a gift tax against the corporation, the IRS considers the insurance proceeds as a distribution from the business to shareholders, on which the recipients now owe income tax.

Example 3: Even a partially incorrect designation can result in a Goodman Triangle. A man obtains a policy on his life, naming his spouse as beneficiary. As his faculties begin to diminish, a decision is made to make the spouse the owner, giving her authority to make changes. So far, so good. But to assist in managing her affairs, the spouse adds the insured’s eldest son as a co-owner. With the addition of the son as co-owner, the owner (spouse and son) is now different than the beneficiary (spouse only).

There may be occasions when the rule of thumb that two of the three parties in a life insurance transaction should be the same doesn’t appear workable. These instances call for professional input, and sometimes, the establishment of a new entity, like a trust, to serve as either owner and/or beneficiary to satisfy the Goodman Triangle rules. Referencing Example 3, problems can arise also when the passage of time results in ownership or beneficiary changes. A Goodman Triangle assessment should be part of every life insurance review.

Great ideas fail because of faulty execution. Make sure you, and your financial professionals, tend to the details.

Christmas has always been a time of giving for Pat and John Turner of Weston, but this past season they took it to a whole new level. The Turners have been collecting Christmas decorations for the past 40 years. From mid-October to March, their house is filled with over 300 decorated trees, ranging in size from three inches in a 1,000 piece village to 22 feet in the living room, as well as thousands of lights. At the TREE-mendous Holiday Party on December 13, they auctioned off all of their trees and decorations to over 300 guests that enjoyed a night of food, spirits and fun. All of the proceeds benefited Kids in Distress (KID). “KID is so near and dear to my heart,” said Pat Turner. “I have great admiration for the women involved and their unparalleled commitment.”

KID is a community-supported agency dedicated to the care and treatment of abused children, the prevention of child abuse and the preservation of family in South Florida. The organization’s goal is not only to protect these children from abuse and neglect, but also to provide them a safe, caring environment in which they can flourish and grow and, when possible, return them to their birth homes. KID’s many programs offer a continuum of care and essential services to child victims and/or children and families at risk for abuse or neglect.

For 31 years, the KID Auxiliary has been partnering with KID by raising awareness, volunteering, and fundraising to support their programs. Members also volunteer at the Agency campus and participate in monthly outings with the children, such as trips to the movies and miniature golf, cooking classes and more. For the holidays, the Auxiliary collected gifts for families through the Holiday Adopt-A-Family project, provided a special gift to reunified and new families through the Big Step Forward Project, and got their own children involved in volunteering through the Kids Helping KID program.

“Unfortunately, abuse is prevalent in many areas and homes,” said Rachel Gebaide, community outreach coordinator. “It leaves children empty searching for love and attention. KID gives these families what they need. We are very lucky to have this team of devoted employees around. It is a pleasure working with these amazing women, who I am happy to call my friends. They are so genuine and friendly. I love this organization.”

There are approximately 150 members in the Auxiliary and most live in the Weston area. They include both working and non-working moms. Gebaide became a member in 2005 after she was asked to donate food for a fundraiser. She wanted to know where her food was going, so she decided to join and got involved with special activities. Initially, she spent most of her time with the children in the shelter.

“The interaction with the children was very rewarding,” said Gebaide. “Some of these children were in there for many months and they saw us time after time. We would hold them, hug them, laugh with them and allow them to be children, which was something that many missed out on. Rocking the babies was also very special. We were able to give them the love and attention that children need to grow into loving and nurturing adults.”

In her current position as community outreach liaison, Gebaide visits schools, businesses and organizations to spread the word about KID. She says that she always gets a positive response when she speaks about the organization she loves. “There are so many ways people can help out,” said Gebaide. “It takes a village to raise a child!”

KID has several upcoming community events, including: • The 12th Annual KID Hero 5K will be held on January 20, at Vista View Park in

Davie. Participants are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero as they show superhuman support for KID. This family-friendly event includes live entertainment, food, and fun at the finish line.

• The 10th Annual KID Duckfest Derby will be held on April 9 in Ft. Lauderdale. During the family-friendly afternoon, the New River will become a sea of yellow as 30,000 rubber ducks race down the river. The event also includes “quacky” activities in the KID Fun Zone, such as the KID Olympics, face painting, carnival games, delicious food trucks, and more. Community members can buy entries in the race by forming “Duck Teams” or adopting individual ducks for $5 each.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates Superintendent Robert W. Runcie for being selected as Florida’s 2016 Superintendent of the Year by the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS). Superintendent Runcie received the honor Wednesday, December 2, 2015, during a joint meeting of FADSS and the Florida School Boards Association in Tampa.

Runcie was appointed BCPS Superintendent in October 2011, and is now entering his fifth year leading the sixth largest public school system in the nation and the second largest in the state of Florida.

During his tenure as BCPS Superintendent, Runcie was instrumental in spearheading community support for an $800 million General Obligation Bond in November 2014, which passed with 74 percent voter approval. This additional revenue source provides BCPS with needed funding for safety and modernization of schools, as well as updated technology, as part of its SMART (Safety, Music & Art, Athletics, Renovation and Technology) initiative.

Additional BCPS education initiatives under Runcie’s leadership include:• Becoming a national model for rethinking school discipline

through its intervention strategy called PROMISE, which is creating positive outcomes for BCPS students and the community.

• Implementing innovative programs and engaging learning opportunities for all students including scholastic chess for all 2nd and 3rd grade students; the largest debate program in the

nation – in all high schools and expanding in middles schools; computer science courses in all high schools; and expanding dual language programs and investing in music and the arts.

• Continuously improving management of BCPS business operations to deliver significant savings for reinvestment in BCPS students, teachers and schools.“Bob Runcie is an outstanding superintendent with a single

focus and commitment to student success,” states FADSS President and Orange County Superintendent Barbara Jenkins. “His instructional and operational expertise provide purposeful direction to one of the nation’s largest urban school districts. Highly respected by his colleagues, Bob well represents the educational leaders of Florida,” adds Jenkins.

“Bob is not only an exceptional superintendent with a proven track record of success; he is a true servant leader committed to educational excellence,” states FADSS Chief Executive Officer and Florida Senator Bill Montford. “He is an asset to the association and his leadership is valued by his colleagues throughout the state, in large part due to his ability to recognize the significant challenges statewide regardless of district size,” adds Montford.

The process for electing Florida’s Superintendent of the Year was established by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), a national organization of school superintendents and other educational leaders. In February 2016, Runcie will represent all Florida superintendents at the AASA’s National Education Conference in Phoenix, Arizona where he will be recognized and honored for his public education service in Florida.

* Year-Round Schools Follow Different Calendars.

In November of 2014, the school received the most sudden and terrible news that any parent would dread. One of their precious Third Grade students passed away. Manatee Bay Elementary School had the privilege of educating and loving Johnny MacDougall from Kindergarten until Third Grade.

When they went into the class to tell the students who saw and played with him just the Friday before, the students were devastated. The school invited school and District counselors to come out and support in the school grieving process. Throughout the day students had opportunities to express their feelings for Johnny in art. As a school, they saw a deeper picture of what they thought was there. One student drew and wrote how when they were new to the school, Johnny was their fi rst friend and is still their best friend, another shared whenever there was a disagreement, Johnny was the fi rst one to come up with the BEST solution and the accolades went on and on…

As a school, they expressed their love for Johnny by ALL wearing pink on the day of his funeral, as this was his absolute favorite color. Unusual for a boy, but this color typifi ed a student with a heart of gold who earned the love and respect of all through his caring and kindness.

In celebration of Johnny’s life and joyous spirit, the school held a memorial dedication on Thursday, November 5, 2015. Johnny’s family, previous teachers and friends were in attendance and spoke in his honor of the positive impact that he left in everyone’s hearts. The school PTA and PTA President: Shari Perez dedicated a memorial bench to be placed in the main hallway to be viewed by all of the lives he touched. This serves as a reminder to live each day and love those around us. “If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together... there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart... I’ll always be with you in the heart,” Winnie the Pooh.

Poem written and presented by students:

In class John was a joySuch an amazing and sweet boy.

Loving fun and fair,He loved without a care.Maverick and Top Gun,

A brother and a wonderful son.Baseball will never be the same,

It was his favorite game.I miss him with all my heart,I loved him from the start.

Funny voices and great stories to share,His creativity did not end there.

He loved to run and play,Huge hugs ended my school day.

Congratulations to the Lady Falcons Soccer Team! They are the 2015 MSAA Soccer County Champions. They have won the soccer championship 4 out of the past 5 years and 6 Championships in 10 years. The Lady Falcons went undefeated 12-0! The suffocating defense of Morgan Meuleman, Kelly Hastings, Riley Carpenteri (captain), Sydney Hackmeyer, and Goalie Franchesca Ramirez recorded 9 shut out games (including the Semi-Final and Final games). Scoring this year came from a lot of different players. Adriana Rincon scored the goal in the Championship game and Sami Rheingold was named the game’s MVP. Camila Jimenez and Adriana Rincon were a big part of the goal-scoring arsenal this year and when the team really needed a goal, they delivered. Alex Goffi (captain), Kim Cover, Sophia Pieschacon (captain), and Sami Rheingold were fi erce and essential keys to controlling the fi eld and getting the ball to where it needed it to be.

This has been an incredible season for the Lady Falcons. Coach Hoopes said, “This is a special group. They are dedicated, driven, and have a strong work ethic. They sacrifi ce so much of their time, their parents sacrifi ce so much of their time, and we appreciate the commitment they make to each other and to representing their school. People think it’s easy to win because they already play soccer. It’s never easy to win; we always play in a diffi cult division with strong teams. Everyone wants to beat us and in 10 years there are only 4 schools that have ever done that. It takes a special kind of person and player to make it to a championship. We try to put them in the best possible position to win, but in the end, it’s all up to them. I’m so happy that they were able to win together and I’m so proud of them.”

Before the Championship game, the Lady Falcons participated in the Making Strides American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Walk together with Coach Hoopes, Coach Stupp, and some of their parents. Coach Hoopes stated, “I wanted them to participate in this because our soccer girls are a family. Being involved in this event helps them appreciate each other and value one another. I try to help them understand the importance of serving others. If

they can understand we are all here to help each other, maybe when they are adults they can impart that compassion into their lives. Volunteering your time to help others always has a great benefi t to building a strong team. They realize they can do anything as long as they are together. These experiences help create memories and bond them forever. As a female, it’s important for young girls to know about this cause; important for them to know people are trying to make a difference by fi nding a cure; important for them to know that whatever they choose to do or support, they can truly make a difference in this world.”

Coach Stupp said, “The Lady Falcon Soccer Team had such a successful season this year because of the dedication and heart displayed by each member. Additionally, the girls had so much fun playing together, that each day created special moments that they will never forget. Winning is wonderful, but watching the sportsmanship, integrity, and selfl essness displayed every day is what makes this a true winning team.”

Students at Gator Run Elementary are celebrating a champion fund raising campaign. Children across the grades ran to victory after taking part in a two-week event that ended in a 30-lap fun run and raised more than $35,000 to fund new shades for the outside play areas.

Gator Run is a school that enjoys supporting the health and fitness of all its students and the PTA chose the Boosterthon Fun Run program with this in mind. The event focuses on building character through sports. Each year the Boosterthon program has a different theme; this year it was the “Big World Recess.” Students watched documentary style videos each day of real kid athletes from around the world sharing their stories and advice. Children were shown examples of “how to win with teamwork, play with humility, live with curiosity, ride with confidence, score with practice and run with endurance.” The stories reached far and wide from a female basketball player in America to the captain of the Tokyo baseball team in Japan. Second grader Anthony Michaelides said, “I liked the Boosterthon. The videos taught me about character and I liked running and raising money for my school.”

PTA President Jessica Sullivan said, “The students loved it because it connects everyone through sport and fitness. More importantly than the money we raise, Boosterthon provides our students with fantastic character-building lessons that really seem to resonate with kids while getting them excited to raise funds for our school.”

Not only did the school more than exceed its fund raising targets, it received donations from 42 states and 24 countries, which was one of the biggest groups of countries in Boosterthon history. Michele Lancelot, PTA Vice President, said, “This event shows the incredible support and teamwork we have at Gator Run from the entire community – from our students, teachers, administration, families and friends, not only here in Weston, but reaching across the world.”

The PTA chose the Boosterthon Fun Run event as their main moneymaker for the third year running and they couldn’t be more pleased with its success. “We want to thank all who donated. We continued to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our Gator Run Family,” said Lancelot.

Principal, Keith Peters, believes “The success of the Fun Run can be attributed to a school community who always want to provide the best for their children, in this case a needed a shade structure.” As a bonus, the students were also awarded special privileges for their fundraising efforts, such as extra recess and PJ parties, with one lucky class given the honor of spraying their Principal Peters and the organizing team with silly string after the fun run. This event shows the importance of good sporting fun and the bonus of a much needed cash boost.

CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL: A SCHOOL OF MANY PRIDES AND TRADITIONS By Jake Fuhrman

Over the past few years, a new tradition has arisen. The varsity girls’ tennis team has developed this tradition of constantly winning. In 2013, a group of freshmen girls made up the core of the team, and lost in the state finals by one point. Since then, the girls have been on a mission, and the mission is almost complete. They have won back-to-back state championships in 2014 and 2015, and are projected favorites to “three-peat” in 2016.

Senior Michelle Eisenberg is one of the original girls from the group in 2013, and she said that the team really has had a desire to win ever since they have tasted defeat. “We wanted to win so badly. We knew every match was going to count,” Eisenberg said. “We were just really determined to get that first place trophy and that is exactly what we did.”

Senior Shene Disbergen has been a crucial part of the recent success that the squad has had and she believes that the team chemistry has played a huge role in the triumphs. “Our team effort and support for each other has helped us become successful over the past couple of years,” Disbergen said.

Aside from Disbergen and Eisenberg, seniors Samara Eisenberg (Michelle’s twin

sister), Pierina Imparato, and Sibel Can are all returning from last year’s state-winning team. All of the experience from the girls has resulted in a load of confidence. “Our expectation for this year is to win states for a third year in a row,” Disbegen said. Eisenberg shares the same enthusiasm and conviction that Disbergen has. “This year I am really hoping for us to win another state championship. It would really be something if we could win for a third year in a row.”

High school tennis season does not start until the spring, so during the offseason, each team member trains on their own. “The team has been training individually to prepare for this upcoming year,” Disbergen said. “We all train at different academies and when the season begins, we all come together and train as a unit.”

Excitement is building in the air around Cypress Bay as tennis season inches closer and closer, especially for the girls who have been on the team from the get-go. “We’ve been training hard and I hope that we’ll have an amazing season,” Eisenberg said.

The entire school is proud of all that the team has accomplished and wishing them the best for the upcoming season and to continue the winning tradition!!!

Reading comprehension is one of the most important aptitudes a student needs to succeed. Put simply, this skill allows your child to understand what he or she reads and analyze its meaning. This active process doesn’t

always come naturally—comprehension instruction at home and in the classroom can

help significantly. Here are few tips to help your child hone this skill and become a better student:

Encourage your child to set a goal before beginning. Previewing a text before reading helps readers develop goals for their reading session. For example, if your child needs to answer a series of questions about a passage or textbook chapter, encourage him or her to look at its organization to note where the most relevant information might be based on what he or she needs or wants to learn. Because textbooks are dense with information, this process will help your child navigate content more effectively and retain what he or she reads in class and as homework.

“Check in” after every page. Self-monitoring is essential to comprehension, so encourage your child to pause after each page (or more frequently if needed) to make sure he or she understood what it says. It can be helpful to jot down important notes on notecards (or sticky notes to place within the book’s pages). If reading together, ask your child periodically what a passage said and if it made sense.

Use the text to answer questions. Part of effective comprehension

monitoring is knowing when to seek further information. If a text references an unfamiliar topic, encourage your child to flip through the chapter to see if it will be discussed later.

Take notes or map it out. Visual aids can be very helpful as students attempt to follow a plot of a story, organize ideas and make connections. Talk with your child’s teacher about visual tools that might aid your child’s comprehension as he or she reads. Also, remind your child not to gloss over graphics within a textbook. These are meant to summarize information and make complicated information more digestible.

Summarize at the end of a section. After each section, encourage your child to take a moment to confirm his or her understanding of the main takeaway, supporting information, extraneous information and anything unexpected that he or she learned.

Take time to reflect. After reading a textbook chapter, your child should refer back to the notecards or sticky notes where he or she wrote important points. Also, encourage your child to consider doing additional research on lingering questions.

If your continued efforts to build your child’s reading comprehension do not seem to yield positive results, there might be something else going on. If your child is struggling with reading in general, call Huntington. We can help get to the root of the problem and help your child become a more capable, confident reader.

Huntington Learning Center offers these tips based on its experience with reading instruction and also drew from suggestions provided by Reading Rockets, a national organization that offers research-based strategies and resources for raising strong readers.

Teaching a Child to Read for Maximum ComprehensionBy Dr. Raymond J. Huntington
