WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER
VOLUME 50, ISSUE 10
November
2018
Worship Joyfully, Serve Faithfully, Give Generously
Senior Adult Ministries, Montreat October 2018
From the Pastor:
The 10:27 Challenge
Dear Westminster Members and Friends,
On October 14th, more than 200 of you took on the 10:27 Challenge. You received an
envelope with $10.27 in it and the simple instructions to use the money to love God and
love your neighbor. (Just like Luke 10:27 says.)
I have been so blessed by the stories you’ve shared, stories that are now being posted
around the church. Here’s one of my favorites:
I was telling my 5 year old granddaughter about Luke 10:27. There is a homeless
man that she sees often outside of Harris Teeter. She was so excited to give him the
envelope, she said "God told my Nana's church for me to give this to you.” He held
the envelope to his heart and said thank you.
During November, we’re continuing to think about Luke 10:27 as it applies to church
stewardship: how the resources you share with the church can be used to love God and love
our neighbors. Our goal in budget planning is that EVERY dollar is used for that purpose.
We’re also thinking about stewardship on a personal level. For many of you, having that
$10.27 created some good anxiety about how you would use it. After all, it is special
money- money to be used with a purpose! Well, if we understand that all we have is a gift
from the Lord, then isn’t it true that EVERY gift we receive is to be used for that purpose?
Every dollar to love God and love our neighbor. Every resource used to love God and love
our neighbor.
That’s challenging, right?
As a community, we pray together and think together about the ways God is calling us to
share those resources in love. Come, hear the stories, be inspired, and join the mission!
Yours in LOVE,
Pastor Daniel

News from the Preschool
It finally feels like Fall is in the air but to look at the Preschool Walls you would think it has been around for a month. October was a busy month filled with a Field Trip to the Farm, a Fairy Tale Ball, Fall Festival and Halloween with all its fun. The Children have settled into the routine after not one, but two, Hurricane scares. Plans have been made to make up all but one of the days missed.
The playground is getting a lot of attention this year, starting with the hard top which was resurfaced in October. It looks nice and the smooth surface makes it safer for the children. Last year the playground lost one of the two large shade trees on the playground and during the recent hot weather it really took its toll on the children. With donations from parents and grandparents of currently enrolled children and grand children as well as Alumni, a 12 x 12 Shade Structure has been ordered for the Playground. This will provide shade for the children. In addition to the Shade Structure a Shade tree has been ordered to replace the tree that was lost. The Preschool is looking forward to these Playground updates.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving the children of the Preschool will participate in the Thornwell Turkey donation and fill bags of groceries for the Church food pantry. In doing so the children will learn to be good stewards.
On behalf of the Preschool Teachers and Staff we would like to wish everyone a Blessed Thanksgiving.
Happy Fall Ya’ll! The Preschool

whole Bible: The Song of Solomon. All are welcome!
Dear Westminster Church Family, There are no words to adequately express our gratitude for your many kindnesses and support that you have shown to our family during this time as we are experiencing the loss of our beloved son, Jerry. Your many cards, calls, love, and prayers have been such a comfort to us. We are so blessed to be a part of such a loving and caring Church. We are grateful to our God for your presence in our lives, and your friendship is a blessing that God has given to our family. Thank you. With love and gratitude, Shirley Seay

Ways to Give to Westminster
Because November is Stewardship Month at
Westminster, the Finance Committee would like to
remind you of the various ways to give your offering.
1. Cash - please place in pew envelope with your
name if you would like to receive credit for the
contribution on your annual contribution
statement.
2. Checks – placed in offering plates or mailed to
the church - the most common way of
contributing.
3. Bill Pay through your bank – you can have a
weekly or monthly check mailed automatically
to the church from your bank account.
4. On-line payments – you can give using a credit
or debit card by clicking on the “Give Now”
button on the church’s website
www.westminstercharleston.org. Secure
payments are made through Vanco Payment
Solutions which is a resource associated with
Presbyterian Foundation.
5. Use your Smart phone and the church’s QR
Code to make a secure gift (also through Vanco
Payment Solutions) to the church by scanning
the unique 2D barcode to send funds directly
from your account to the church. Here is the
QR code:
6. Appreciated stock gifts – if you have an
investment in a publicly traded stock that has
appreciated, you can make a gift to the church
by transferring the shares directly into the
church’s account at TD Ameritrade. You will
not pay any tax on the appreciation in value,
and you will get a tax deduction for the value
of the stock at the time of the transfer. Ask
your tax advisor for more information. Ask
Anne Camburn for the account number at TD
Ameritrade if you intend to make a stock
transfer.
7. Give part of your minimum required
distribution as a “qualified charitable donation”
directly from your Individual Retirement
Account IF you are 70 ½ and would like a tax
benefit by being able to exclude the IRA
income from your income tax return. Please
confer with your tax advisor.
Thank you for being faithful in giving to
Westminster.

HIGGS PIGGS The Higgs Piggs smoker (behind the church by the Scout Hut) will be fired up on Wednesday, November 21. A crew of Westminster’s best cooks will be ready and waiting to smoke a meat of your choice. The coals will be ready to begin about 8:00 am so bring your Turkey, Brisket, Ribs, Salmon, Sausage, Ham, whatever, and let Tom and his crew help you with your Thanksgiving feast. The cost is a donation of your choice which will go toward funding one of Westminster ‘s Mission Projects. You can also use this occasion to come for lunch with something to smoke. Tall tales are encouraged. Believe it or not, there are problems out there to be solved.

The Westminster Presbyterian Church
Endowment Fund
Westminster’s Endowment Fund for ministry was established in 1995 through the recommendations of the Session and approval of the Congregation. The purpose of the Endowment Fund is to provide the members and friends of our Congregation with the opportunity to practice faithful stewardship of accumulated resources and to insure the funding of ministries of our Congregation and the larger Church. The following funds make up the Westminster Endowment, and may be added to by gifts or bequests. Additional funds for designated purposes may be established upon recommendation of the Committee, and action of the Session.
A. General Purpose Fund
B. Christian Education, Youth Ministry and Preschool Fund. (Provides support and
funding for Christian Education , youth ministries and the preschool)
C. Mabel Rheney Scholarship Fund (Provides need based scholarships for church
sponsored events)
D. General Mission Fund (Supports the mission efforts of the church)
E. Friar Shuler Worship and Music Fund (Supports the music and worship ministry)
F. Whitsit Capital Improvement Fund (Funds any capital improvement)
G. Stewart/Warner Senior Adult Ministry Fund (Supports Senior Adult Ministries)
H. Shepard Family Fund (To be used at discretion of Endowment Committee)
I. Corrine Rowe Christian Scholarship Fund (Provides no interest loans and support
for church members preparing for full time Christian service)
While financial gifts have been made to the various funds in the Endowment, limited proceeds have been distributed for the Church’s ministries because it has been the intent to allow the Endowment Fund’s assets to grow for several years before beginning to significantly withdraw income from the Endowment. To that end, the Endowment Fund has provided small gifts to the Hands of Christ Ministry, the Church Hand Bells, the Church Bus, an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the emergency care of our Church family, support for Montreat, and most recently, the improvement of the Church playground. From a small beginning in 1995 of $76,000 our Endowment has grown to over $681,000 in September 2018. The Endowment continues to grow through the contributions of members of our church family, the gifts of friends, and the management of the Endowment Fund by the Presbyterian Foundation. We give thanks to God for the “grace of liberality” which he has placed within the hearts of the people of our Congregation. We are grateful to all those who have contributed to this ministry since its inception and thank God for those saints who in their love for the Church and commitment to Jesus Christ remembered the ministry of Westminster in their wills. Would you like to learn more about the Westminster Endowment Fund and opportunities to leave a lasting financial legacy to Westminster? You may contact one of our Pastors, Daniel Smoak or Lissa Long or one of the Endowment Committee members: Jim Seay, Dick Patrick, Bob Shepard, Doug Earnst or Norman Hook.
