Westminster Health TrainersDid you know that walking a mile in 15 to 20 minutes uses the same amount of energy as running that mile in 8 to 10 minutes? These are the kind of goals that you can set for yourself with help from a Westminster Health Trainer.

Health Trainers have been specially trained to support and motivate you to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Three reasons to book a Health Trainer:

Westminster Health Trainer Diana Pedersson’s advice on keeping fit this summer:• There are so many great parks in Westminster –

make the most of them and keep fit outdoors. • Walking is the best form of exercise, as are classes like yoga

and pilates that strengthen your back and core muscles. Get an ActiveWestminster guide to find out about activities.

• When exercising in the heat, don’t forget to drink lots of water.

For more information and to book your one-to-one sessions with a Health Trainer, call 020 8964 2727 or visit www.westminsterhealthtrainers.com.

Tai Chi in the gardenEvery Tuesday and Thursday at 10am the Tai Chi group meet at 60 Penfold Street. As soon as the weather gets warmer the class moves outside into the garden.Surrounded by tulips, mint and hydrangea blossoms, the class follows a series of gentle movements to help you relax and stretch. Linda Chan, 66, who is a regular at the class, says: “I have been coming to Tai Chi for two years now and I love it. It’s a very gentle form of exercise that helps you balance and keep calm. With Tai Chi you can exercise your whole body and it can help with concentration too. It’s especially nice in the fresh air and sunshine!” For more information about Tai chi, gardening and lots of other activities, including a programme of summer outings to the seaside and beyond, contact Denis Kane at 60 Penfold Street, NW8 8PJ or call 020 8762 3082.

HIDDEN gems Find out interesting facts about some of Westminster’s smaller and lesser known open spaces.

What the Dickens?Cavendish Square Gardens was first developed in 1717 by the 2nd Earl of Oxford for his wife Henrietta Cavendish-Hollace. It became popularised by references to it in books by Charles Dickens; including Nicholas Nickleby, Little Dorrit and Barnaby Rudge. The garden was originally a circle of grass where sheep grazed but is now home to an ornamental garden with shrubs, lawns and flower beds.

Wild thingsA wildlife area has been created at Queen’s Park Gardens – a haven for birds, butterflies, bats, beetles and more. The habitat here is particularly important for the survival of the House Sparrow – once a common bird in London but now in dramatic decline. The gardens support one of only four known colonies of House Sparrow in Westminster.

Let’s Go Let’s GrowMike Wohl, 60, has spent the last few years building up projects that have seen the Church Street area transform from an anti-social problem area to spaces for vegetables and fruit trees.

Mike says: “It all started when my doctor warned me about my weight and the dangers of getting diabetes. I saw some seeds in a shop and realised how cheap and easy it would be to grow my own healthy food. So I got some compost and Chinese takeaway containers and started planting.”

He was astonished by what grew: “With no garden my balcony became choc-a-bloc with plants. I started to take seedling plants to the food co-op to encourage other people to do the same thing.”

The next year Mike started the Let’s Go Let’s Grow project for local people to get involved and after five months of hard work, a group of 30 residents revamped a disused 300sq metre space and filled it with more than 40 varieties of vegetables and herbs.

The project has now expanded to other areas, and a balcony box scheme has been set up with council funding. On future plans he says: “We are looking to set up bee hives for residents, in Church Street and Queen’s Park and in a few years’ time, we hope to be selling the honey and jam we make on the local markets for everyone to enjoy.”

To find out more about various Let’s Go Let’s Grow projects and how to get involved, call 07971 550 638 or email [email protected].

The area has six pieces of exercise equipment specially designed for older people to enjoy, to aid core strength, flexibility and balance.Winston Fletcher, local resident and chairman of the Knightsbridge Association said: “There are lots of facilities in the park for children but none for older people – this is now really going to benefit us.”He continued: “It’s great because you don’t need to be

wearing lycra or special gear – people who are walking past can just pop straight on.”Couple Don and Rachel Stearns live nearby and were trying the equipment out for the first time. Don said: “I’ll definitely use it again. It’s great to be outside in the fresh air.” Rachael added: “I’m sure this will be a great place to come and meet new people – it’s very sociable around here already and this will make it even more so.”

Meet new people, join a club, play games or have a meal with friends. Go along to one of Age UK’s community hubs. Have you ever watched Bollywood dancing and wanted to have a go yourself? That’s exactly what a group of Westminster residents do every Wednesday at the Covent Garden Community Hub.

Westminster has two community hubs run by Age UK (formerly Age Concern), in Covent Garden and Maida Vale. And Bollywood dancing is just one of the many activities there; you also can play bridge, sing in a choir, watch films or even learn Tai Chi.

Many visitors just pop in for a cup of tea and a chat or even a hot lunch, served every day at 12.30pm. Be warned though, you might find yourself signing up for a Bollywood class much sooner than you think!
