Club News

Night Classes

Grille Badges The club has ordered a quantity of WVVMC Grille badges which will be available for members to buy (at cost), hopefully in time for the West Run. They will be Blue and White on a Silver background. We don’t have an exact price yet but it is estimated to be between €7 and €10. If you require one please contact a committee member over the next few weeks. They will be on a first come, first served basis.

Last autumn the we organised night classes in Car Maintenance at GMIT but the timing did not allow for it to be featured in the newsletter, hence people missed out. This year we have organised another Car Maintenance Course which will start in September and run one night per week for 10 weeks. The course tutors will customise the course to suit the requirements of the club members attending and will be geared towards classic cars rather than modern ones. The fee will depend on the number attending but it is estimated to be in the region of €200. If you are interested please contact Tom Fahy on 091 524807 In addition, we have organised a course in Bodywork Restoration at GMIT which will run in January. This will also be one evening per week for 10 weeks. Please contact David Fennell (087) 2273747 or 091 757208 for more details. Participant numbers are extremely limited and will be on a first come first served basis.

Last year we had some very nice shirts, Jumpers and waterproof jackets with the WVVMC logo embroidered on them for sale. Due to differing sizes we can only have these made to order and an order can only be placed if there is sufficient quantities required by members. If you are interested, please contact Larry Murphy on 091 794639

Car Museums Abroad By Michael Spellman

Porsche Museum, Stuttgart, Germany

In the last newsletter I recounted the visit I had with my family to the Mercedes Museum. Stuttgart itself is a great city to visit, in that Porsche are headquartered there as well. In February last, a new Porsche Museum opened and we were able to get to visit it in the same weekend. Porsche’s history is more condensed when compared to Mercedes as they stuck to the manufacture of sports cars and only from 1949 onwards. But Dr. Ferdinand Porsche had been involved in car development since the early 1900s. He had in turn worked for Mercedes, Austro Daimler and Auto Union (the forerunner to Audi) and designed the Volkswagen Beetle during the 1930’s. The first part covers his involvement in these companies and it includes a 1940’s Volkswagen.

The next part covers the first cars that carried the Porsche name. This showed the 356 model and all it’s derivatives – roadsters and speeders, including the 550 spyder like the one film actor James Dean had. Porsche started with the designs of the Volkswagen and the first Porsche was very much a slick sporty body on a Beetle chassis. The engine followed the design set for the Beetle. As the car

evolved, the engine was made more powerful and reliable. The 3rd section showed the company’s involvement in motorsport. This included cars that took part in Le Mans from the sixties onwards, and rally cars that took part in the most famous rallies around the world – East African, Targa Florino etc. The final section showed the evolution of the 911 and the present range of cars. The 911 itself was launched in 1964 and though it was developed continuously since that time until 1993, the bodyshell did not change (except for it to be stretched in 1967 to allow it to be less tail

Page 6: Western Veteran and Vintage Motor Club, Ltd.wvvmc.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/June_2009.pdf · Dublin the Karlshrue Baden airport. This is sixty miles from Stuttgart and we hired

6

except for it to be stretched in 1967 to allow it to be less tail happy. In that time the engine capacity had increased from a basic 2 litre (6 cylinder) up to 3.2 litres. Versions of the 911 introduced from 1993 onwards did contain some amount of body work change and the 911 is still being produced today though it has changed a bit since the original. Aircooled engines were available until 1996 when it was replaced with a water cooled engine, though it remains in the same place – in the back. Getting to Stuttgart; We flew with Ryanair, from Dublin the Karlshrue Baden airport. This is sixty miles from Stuttgart and we hired a car for this part of the journey. Depending on how many are in your party, you could either hire a mini bus or limo service. You can also use the train network from Karlshrue town to Stuttgart.

Restoration Service A car restoration service has recently been started by John Daly based just outside Carrick on Shannon Co.Leitrim. It differs from other businesses in that he will get the car shells dipped into an acid based chemical to remove paint, under-seal and rust. The shell is then dipped into a tank which applies a zinc (anti rust) coating then an e-coat. The advantages of this are: • Rust is removed from inside box sections and in-accessible areas. • 100% of rust is removed. • The steel retains its original strength • The Shell is Zinc coated

John will also do small restoration jobs and touch ups. Contact Details: John Daly, Moheraven, Auahamore, Carrick on Shannon Co. Leitrim. Phone (085) 766 2398

Event Report. Cultural & Heritage Run Text by Frank Mullan

On Sunday 10th May in brilliant sunshine 42 members set off from Oranmore Community Centre for Bunratty Folk Park in 24 classic cars. In the best traditions of these things, the afternoon

at Bunratty kicked off with an excellent four course lunch. After lunch, some of us

undertook a guided tour of Bunratty Castle, while others just toured the various houses and farms in the Folk Park and sampled the delights of the 19th century village pub. It was a very enjoyable day, the weather was fantastic and the food and service at Bunratty was second to none.

LATE NEWS TREASURE HUNT By Ian Doherty

Just Prior to this Newsletter going to print we can bring you news of the Charity Car Treasure Hunt which was held on Sunday 28th June. Originally it was to be on 21st June but was postponed as it was felt it would clash with the Eyrecourt Show which was being attended by many members. As the details would not appear in the Newsletter, Sergio Magnetti took it upon himself to send out 160 flyers to members to advertise the charity event. The Route and clues had been designed by John Folan and 100 copies printed, although about 30 cars were expected in reality. Out of the 160 members who received flyers a grand total of 5 (yes Five) cars entered for the event. Enough said!

In the last edition we featured an article on a Kerry Tourer restoration project by Phil Denson. Phil contacted me recently to say that he is still waiting on parts and other people so not much progress since. He expects that it will be ready and here for next years WestRun (2010)

From the editor.. Dear Members, As I type this I am touching a piece of wood, hoping that the weather we have been having will continue. Since the last edition we have had quite a few good runs; the Meals After Wheels Run to Coole Park and Paddy Burkes in Clarinbridge, the Heritage Run to Bunratty and a disappointingly attended Charity Treasure Hunt. Members have also been out and about supporting other clubs and shows. Some members attended the West Cork Summer Run in mid May and this, by all accounts was an excellent weekend. Closer to home, many attended the Shrule Vintage Show, held at Castlehacket near Tuam. Considering it was their first show, it can only be described as having been excellent, with the beautiful weather a contributing factor. The following Sunday, many went to Eyrecourt, another big show with many fine exhibits. You may notice that this month I have omitted the crossword puzzle. This is due to my supply of suitable clues drying up. If anyone can help by submitting some it would be great as I believe (well, hope) that the crosswords are enjoyed. I am also looking for items to print such as vintage motoring newspaper cuttings, ads and maybe old photographs, particularly local street scenes or old photos of the cars of the day. I am conscious that since the newsletter is only published every quarter, some events are not advertised in the Events Diary. A good example of this is the Castlehacket show. There was no mention of this last march when we produced the newsletter so many members did not know it was taking place. Obviously the club cannot send flyers out for every non-WVVMC event that’s going on around the country. We could of course put information on the website, or use email but not everyone has web access. However, Most People at this stage have a mobile phone and can read an incoming text (even if they can’t send them). So the club is hoping to generate a database of members mobile numbers. Members, when they joined supplied the club with their landline number but not their mobile. The idea is that when we have everybody, we can set up to send a text from the web which will reach everyone’s phone. It is NOT intended to take the place of the newsletter but just to supplement it by giving up to the minute information such as an impromptu run or a change of time date or venue to a previously advertised run. Your mobile number will not be published in the Newsletter nor will it be disclosed to any other parties. We are asking all members to text their name to Michael Spellman 086-8210679 and he will then have your number. If you prefer not to send text you can of course give him a call!! Many thanks to everyone who submitted items for this newsletter, Ian

1970 Triumph Herald 13/60 Text by Ian Doherty

1

In 1959 (50 years ago) Triumph launched the Herald which was to replace the Standard 8 and 10. It was however somewhat overshadowed by the mould breaking Mini and Fords all-new Anglia, released that same year. The Herald used the Standard 948cc OHV engine and the body was built onto a separate chassis, unusual for that time. From a production point of view this

was a positive move as it made it easier for Triumph to offer a range of body styles. The main tub was bolted to the chassis and every

panel could be unbolted and removed. Within two years of release the car was available as a Saloon, a coupe, a convertible, an estate and a courier van. In addition, the Herald became a base for many other cars, the Spitfire, GT6, the 6 Cylinder Vitesse and indeed many Kit cars. Another upside of the separate chassis construction was the huge bonnet which does a wide-mouth frog impersonation giving brilliant access to the engine, electrics and suspension. Even the gearbox is quite accessible via removable panels in the floor. In 1961 following a Leyland takeover of Triumph a 1147cc engine was offered alongside the original 948cc. This engine produced 48bhp which was a considerable improvement on the 34.5bhp of the original. These larger engined Heralds received a wood veneer dash and the previously optional white rubber bumpers. In 1963 the 12/50 model arrived which featured a slightly tweaked version of the 1147cc engine, now producing 51bhp and having front disc brakes. This new number designation, 12/50 meaning 12 for 1200cc and 50 being the bhp (give or take!) The 13/60 arrived in 1967. Fitted with a 1296cc unit and producing a heady 61bhp the 13/60 was instantly recognisable thanks to a different headlamp treatment, a slant-eyed bonnet similar to the vitesse and a new horizontal grille. Inside, passengers sat on more comfortable seats while they gazed at the revised dash layout. The 13/60 was the final development of the Herald although the 12/50 continued along side it until 1970. In early 1971 the 13/60 was finally displaced by the

Coupé

Toledo , a cheapened version of the Triumph 1300. While researching this article I dropped in to WVVMC member Larry Murphy for a look at his 1970 13/60 convertible. Originally white, this

car has been extensively restored and looks beautiful in its new yellow colour. The interior, although restored is pretty much authentic with the exception of the aftermarket Mountney steering wheel but in my opinion this enhances the car’s good

looks and gives it a sporty feel. The herald was a good car. In many ways, it was the BMW 3 series of its day, being perceived as more upmarket than your average Viva or Anglia.

We could also see it as doing what was done by BMW years later; offering different body styles, Saloon, coupé and convertible all derived from the same

basic car. Due to its separate chassis and bolted on panels, the Herald was prone to rattles. Panel fit was not a strong point at the Triumph assembly plant. I remember reading somewhere in a buyers guide “...don't worry

too much about panel fit, Triumph didn’t!” Inside, there is room for 4 adults (even in the convertible) and decent luggage space in the

boot. The Triumph Herald will also be remembered for it’s amazing 25 foot turning circle! Much thanks to Larry Murphy for his help with this article.
