Following the learning path the students would experience, workshop participants will solve a progression of increasingly complex word problems in order to understand how proficiency in the tape diagram method can be developed in students and colleagues. During this session, participants will experience the part-whole and comparison models of tape diagrams and will develop an instinct for which is best suited to a particular word problem. Participants will learn through experience how to help their students to develop the habits of mind that support successful use of the tape diagram. This workshop is appropriate for teachers of grades K-8 who are interested in furthering their understanding of this instructional model while sharpening their own mathematical habits. As a result, teachers will be better prepared to support their students’ journey to proficiency with the mathematical practices.
