WRESTLING

The new $30 million Mountaineer Field House was opened in the spring of 2014.

Western State Colorado University, the highest four-year institution of higher learning in the United States at 7,703 feet above sea level, opened its doors to students 103 years ago this fall and celebrated a century of educating educators three academic years ago.

Western is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, with academic programs that take advantage of the natural laboratory that surrounds campus. The college has the only college-based Mountain Rescue Team in the nation and is consistently ranked by National Geographic and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine as one of the top colleges for students to experience outdoor recreation.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain are both within an hour drive of campus for winter sports, and Hartman Rocks features a range of activites in the summer. The City of Gunnison hosted the start of the “Queen’s Stage” of the USA Pro Cycling Tour, which several international cycling experts called one of the toughest stages to receive certifi cation.

The Mountaineers have maintained one of the top small college athletic programs in the nation, with the fourth-highest average in the history of the Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup. With 90 RMAC championships, 107 individual national championships and 15 national team championships, the Mountaineers have been building “Champions Out of Thin Air” since the college opened in 1911. The programs have maintained one of the top graduation rates in Division II when compared to the student body, with several programs outpacing the national average many times over.

WRESTLINGPAUL WRIGHT GYMBuilt in 1951 and renovated several times since, Paul Wright Gym boasts a capacity of 1,800 spectators. At 7,728 feet above sea level, the facility is the highest collegiate gym in the world.

The Mountaineer wrestling teamhas won more than 80 percent of its home duals over the last 11 seasons, and have won 10 of their last 12 duals coming into the 25th Annual Tracy Borah Duals. Western has posted a winning record at home in 10 of the last 11 seasons.

In 1960, the current swimming pool was added to thefacility. In 1965, the wrestling room was added on theeast side to help support the back-to-back college division national championship teams of 1963 and 1964.

In 1998, a major 40,000 square foot renovation wascompleted that added a 2,500 square foot weight roomand a locker facility for visiting teams and the WesternState student body. Along with the south addition, sixclassrooms were included that allowed the Recreationand Exercise Science Department to conduct all itsclasses in one building.

After the 1998 renovation, the Mountaineer SportsHall of Fame Room was completed with meetingfacilities and trophy cases in 1999.

In 2008, a new gym fl oor and retractable baskets wereinstalled. New bleachers were installed in 2005.

The facility recently underwent major renovations with the new Mountaineer Field House being added to the southwest portion of the building. The facility features a regular 200-meter track for collegiate and high school meets, expanded offi ce areas for the Mountaineer Athletic Department, a new weight training facility, an additional training room, a new

High Altitude Performance Lab and a student recreation facility on the south end of the building. The project was completed in early 2014.

The building is named after Paul W. Wright, who spent 38 years as a professor, coach and administrator at Western State. He also served as judge and mayor in Gunnison and was instrumental in establishing skiing as an NCAA sport.

Miles Van Hee is in his 18th season as head wrestling coach of the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers in 2013. He was the assistant coach at Western from 1993-1997. Last season, Van Hee’s team was crowned the RMAC Dual Champions and the Region IV / RMAC Champions. The team also fi nished as the second ranked NWCA All-Academic team for the second consecutive season.

In 2004, Van Hee was named the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year and has been cited by National Wrestling Hall of Fame – Colorado Chapter as “Colorado College Coach of the Year” on fi ve occasions (2001, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011), more than any other collegiate coach in Colorado. He’s a four-time RMAC Coach of the Year (2005, 2009, 2010, 2014). In 1995, Van Hee was named the Assistant Collegiate Wrestling Coach of the Year for all levels by Wrestling USA Magazine.

Van Hee has coached six NCAA Division II National Champions - Shane Carwin (1999), Dave Vondy (2001), Jared Haberman (2004), Adrian Jiron (2004) and Donovan McMahill (2010 and 2011) – 14 NCAA Division II National Finalists, 48 NCAA Division II All-Americans, and 57 NWCA All-Academic wrestlers.

Van Hee’s dual record for Western Wrestling is 154-83-5 and his teams have fi nished in the Top 25 every year and in the top 10 eight times. In 2004, the Mountaineers fi nished fourth at the NCAA Division II Championships, and fi fth at the 2011 championships. The Mountaineers won 16 straight home duals from 2008-09 through the 2010-11 season.

Van Hee wrestled for the Mountaineers from 1990-93. He was a two-time All-American and RMAC champion, and a NCAA Division II West Regional champion. In 1992, he was selected as a member of the USA-Collegiate Cultural Exchange Team that toured Poland and Germany.

Originally from Fowler, Colorado, Van Hee also was three-time high school state champion at Fowler High School and an Asics Junior National All-American and Cadet All-American. He holds a bachelor’s degree in technology from Western State (1994) and earned his master’s degree in sports management from the University of Northern Colorado in 1997.

Van Hee is also the Director of the Rocky Mountain Wrestling Camp – which is the longest running and one of the most successful wrestling camps in America. The late

legendary Western State wrestling coach, Tracy Borah, started the Rocky Mountain Wrestling Camp in 1963. Last summer, Van Hee and his camp staff brought in over 1,000 wrestlers and coaches from over 70 high schools and 14 states to the Rocky Mountains for four sessions that included an individual camp, an intensive camp and two team camps.

He and his wife, Tonya - who is the Director of Alumni Relations for Western – have two boys, Bryson and Jared.

ASSISTANT COACHES

JESSE CRUZ

Cruz is in his fourth season as an assistant wrestling coach for the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers in 2014.

A Western graduate of the 2011 class, Cruz was a three-time NCAA II National Qualifi er and an NCAA II All-American in 2011 at 133lbs for the Mountaineers. Cruz was also a four-time NCAA II Super 4/RMAC placer and a runner-up.

Originally from Colorado Springs, Cruz was a High School State Champ for Wasson High School and was recruited to Western State in 2006. Cruz fell in love with the beauty of Gunnison immediately and graduated with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and a minor in Business Administration.

Jesse currently works for the Western Alumni offi ce and enjoys being outside in the Gunnison valley as much as possible.

DONOVAN MCMAHILL

Donovan McMahill, a two-time national champion at Western State, returned to Gunnison as an assistant coach in 2014.

McMahill spent the last three years as an assistant coach for the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars wrestling program.

McMahill was the 2011 NCAA Division II National Tournament Outstanding Wrestler and Wrestler of the Year for Western State. He went undefeated at the 197-pound weight class his senior season and completed his career with a 51-match winning streak.

A three-time All-American, McMahill earned numerous awards at Western State including Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Year in 2009. He also was the Freshman Wrestler of the Year in the RMAC in 2008. He completed his career with a record of 137-20 that included wins over several NCAA Division I competitors.

McMahill graduated from Western State in 2011 with a bachelor’s in psychology as well as exercise and sports science.

CHARLIE PIPHER

Pipher is beginning his fourth season as an assistant wrestling coach for the Mountaineers in 2014.

An almuni of Western State Colorado University, Pipher had a tremendous wrestling career from 2004-2011. As a Mountaineer he was a three-time All-American and a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion at 184 pounds. In 2011, Pipher fi nished second at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Pipher graduated from Western State College in 2011 with a degree in Business and Exercise and Sport Psy-chology in 2011.

CRAIG OTTO

Craig Otto is in his 16th season as assistant coach for the Western State Colorado University wrestling program in 2014.

A native of Forest Grove, Oregon, Otto wrestled for the Mountaineers from 1996-98 and was a three-time All-American. He was the 1997 Colorado Collegiate champion and was a part of the American wrestling teams that toured Bulgaria and Colombia.

Otto graduated from Western State College with a degree in kinesiology.

WRESTLING

Leroy (Tracy) Borah graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1943. From there, he began his journey to become one of the most well respected and infl uential wrestling coaches in the history of small college athletics and specifi cally, the state of Colorado. Borah received his B.S. from Colorado State University in 1950 where he was a double threat on the wrestling mat and the football fi eld. He then came to Western State College to obtain his M.A., and later completed advanced studies at Arizona State

University. Not only was he a pioneer in Colorado collegiate athletics, but Borah excelled in other areas of life. Tracy served as a paratrooper during World War II fi ghting for the U.S. Armed Forces while also playing professionally in jazz big bands.

He began his coaching career at the prep level instructing teenagers at Sedgwick (Colo.) High School in football, basketball, and track & fi eld in 1950. This is also where he began to enhance young minds through teaching social studies and biology. Borah then spent three years at Haxton (Colo.) High School where he coached the same three sports and again taught social studies and biology.

Borah moved up to the collegiate ranks and began his illustrious coaching career in the sport of wrestling in July of 1954. His fi rst experience instructing grapplers was at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. He coached football, wrestling, track & fi eld, and taught biology at Northeastern, all of which were familiar tasks to Borah. He also took on the responsibility of building the track, a strenuous activity, which took dedication and resilience.

From Northeastern Junior College, Borah moved back to Western State College where his legacy would reach its pinnacle. The success of athletics at Western State College can be attributed to the hard work of Borah. He arrived at WSC in 1956 where he served as athletic director, head wrestling coach and assistant coach for both football and track upon his retirement in 1985.

As head wrestling coach, Borah guided 45 individual Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions, 30 All-Americans, seven national champions and back-to-back national championship teams in 1963 and 1964. The latter national championship squad was inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2004. He also served on the National Wrestling Rules Committee and was the founder and director of the Rocky

Mountain Wrestling Camp. Borah ran the camp for 22 years, which today is the longest running wrestling camp in the United States. He also started the Colorado Collegiate Wrestling Championships and was president of the Mountain Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, which he incepted with three other wrestling colleagues. The MIWA was considered to be tougher than the NAIA national championships to many because not only were there several high quality NCAA College Division teams, but the tournament also featured nationally ranked University Division teams.

During Borah’s 18 years as athletic director, Western State experienced one of the most successful football eras in the history of the RMAC. During this time, Bill Noxon coached the gridiron Mountaineers to eight RMAC titles in nine seasons. Borah was also responsible for starting Western’s fi rst athletic booster organization - the Century Club.

Some of Borah’s crowning achievements are as follows: inducted into the Colorado High School Coaches Hall of Fame (1989), Western State Colorado University Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame (1995), NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame (1996), Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (1998), National Wrestling Hall of Fame Colorado Chapter (2000), RMAC Hall of Fame (2005) and RMAC All-Century Team Coach (2009). He was also awarded the Coach of the Year by the Colorado Wrestling Coaches Association and the College Educator of the Year in 1979. Tracy Borah Day was designated in Gunnison, Colo. on Feb., 14, 1985, celebrating the accomplishments of which many individuals hold in high regard with respect to Borah. The Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Room is dedicated in his honor.

In 1991, the Tracy Borah Invitational was born. The format changed to a dual event in 2007.

MOUNTAINEERS - A poem by John Nelson

John Nelson is an accomplished professional cowboy poet with many published pieces of work. John Nelson wrote “Mountaineers” in honor of the 50-year anniversary of the Mountaineer Athletic Association.

A Western State student-athlete from 1966-1970, John was a two-sport athlete, participating in football and wrestling. John Nelson is also the owner of Gunnison Country Guide and Outfi tting, a long-time Mountaineer Athletic Association Corporate Partner.

Recruiting GuidelinesA Booster may:• contact a prospect as long as the booster had an establishedrelationship prior to the student becoming a prospect and as longas there is no attempt to recruit the prospect for Western;• watch a prospect’s athletic contest (but not have contact withthat prospect or the prospect’s parents); and• provide names, statistics, newspaper articles, etc. of outstandingprospects from the booster’s local area to Western coaches andstaff (but not contact that prospect’s coach or school offi cials inorder to gather materials pertaining to the prospect’s athletic oracademicabilities).

A Booster may not:• contact (telephone or in writing/e-mail) a prospect or his/herparents in person, for the purposes of recruiting the prospect;• make contact with a prospect or his/her parents on or off theWestern campus for the purposes of recruiting his/her to Western;• mail anything to a prospect, including press releases, mediaguides, posters, schedule cards, etc.;• approach a Western coach who is with a prospect either on oroff the Western campus;• contact or request anything (transcript,videotape) from a prospect’s counselor or coach in order to evalu-ate the athletic or academic ability of a prospect; and• provide any extra benefi t to a prospect or his/her family orfriends.

Rules Regarding current Western Student-AthletesA Booster may:• provide an occasional family home meal to a student-athlete oran entire team. Such meal must take place in the home, not in arestaurant. The meal may be catered.• provide employment under certain circumstances to currentstudentathletes. Student-athletes must be paid the established rate(in the area for similar services) for work actually performed.

A Booster may not:• provide extra benefi ts to any student-athlete andhis/her family;• use the name or picture of a student-athlete to directly or indi-rectly promote the sale or use of a commercial product or service;• provide free or reduced rate housing for a studentathlete or his/

her family;• hire a studentathlete to house-sit;• provide an honorarium to a student-athlete who has been ap-proved for a speaking engagement. Student-athletes may receive only actual and necessary travel expenses to pre-approved speak-ing engagements; and• provide any extra benefi t to a current student-athlete.

Student-Athlete EmploymentA student-athlete may be employed during or outside theacademic year, provided:• The student-athlete’s compensation does not include anyremuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may havefor the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame orpersonal followingthat he or she has obtained because of athletics ability;• The student-athlete is compensated only for work actuallyperformed;• The student-athlete is compensated at a rate commensurate withthe going rate in that locality for similar services; and

Employer “Do’s” and “Don’ts”• The athletic department may arrange employment for prospectsin the summer prior to their enrollment as freshmen and forenrolled studentathletes during all offi cial vacation periods (sum-mer, winter, spring) during the academic year.• Do not provide free transportation to and from jobs for studen-tathletes,unless such transportation is provided to all employees.• Do provide employment for prospective and currently enrolledstudentathletes during permissible time periods and at regular payrates for similarly qualifi ed non-athlete employees.
