Shop workers and business owners in Church Corner are furious about parking changes being made to the area.

Following high demand for on-street parking the city council is placing parking restrictions on Brake, Bowen and Leslie Sts in Up-per Riccarton.

The changes will provide staggered P120 parking restric-tions on the streets, freeing up parking spaces for residents, their visitors and other short-term users.

This would mean less space for all day parking users such as shop

workers and busi-ness owners.

In a report to the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board city council traffic

engineer Ryan Rolston said con-sultation with businesses had been undertaken.

He said out of the 20 submissions received, 90 per cent had supported

the proposal. One woman who worked in the

area and declined to be named said during the week it was already “diabolical.”

“It’s so frustrating - the other day I went round and round the streets looking for a car park. Where are the workers going to go?” she said.

Jellie Park has celebrated its 50th birthday.

Due to a poor weather forecast the event was post-poned 24 hours until Sunday, December 14.

About 1000 people turned up for the summer event last weekend.

City council recreation and sports unit manager John Filsell said Jellie Park had been a favourite for generations of Christchurch families.

In 1964 the £87,000 project was developed incorporating a 50m long pool, an 11m diving pool and a concrete beach area.

It was the year The Beatles toured New Zealand, with Bill-board Top 100 hits from Man-fred Mann and Roy Orbison, and ice cream favourites such as Eskimo Pie and Strawberry Toppa.

The pools were officially opened by the Minister of In-ternal Affairs, David Seath, on December 5 with nearly 2000 people in attendance.

In 1983 a plan was developed to include two hydro-slides, a special swimming pool and sauna for the handicapped,

mini golf and bumper boats.New Aquajet slides unique

to New Zealand were also included.

In 1987 recreation manage-ment services David Hender-son was engaged to further develop and manage the $2.2 million complex.

The complex was upgraded to an indoor swimming complex, consisting of a 25m multi-purpose pool, a 17m learners pool, fitness centre, aerobics studio, creche and a restaurant.

On April 5, 2007 Jellie Park closed its doors for a further re-development.

The outdoor learners and toddlers pools were removed to make way for further indoor facilities and the refurbish-ment of the existing indoor pools.

The new complex was of-ficially opened on August 3, 2008 by former mayor Sir Bob Parker.

It was re-named Jellie Park Recreation & Sports Centre and housed the existing 25m recreation pool and 17m teaching pool.

Repairs owner Leigh Archbold said it would affect his business.

“Customers already have no where to park because of restau-rant goers,” he said.

“The city council still haven’t solved the issue of parking – they’ve just moved it,” said Mr Archbold.

One staff member at Church Corner Natural Foods, who also declined to be named, said she was often forced to park on the residential streets and would now have to move her car on her breaks.

“For me it’s not convenient,” she said.

Community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said parking changes for the area were long overdue.

The search for a catchy name for Halswell’s new library and com-munity facility is on, and Halswell residents can have their say.

The facility’s completion date is not until November next year, but plans and construction are well under way and its name is the only missing element.

City council facilities and infra-structure rebuild director David Adamson said the team had been trying to come up with catchy names but none had the “wow factor”.

He said the wider community could add better dimensions, and called for absolutely anything.

Name suggestions could be re-lated to Halswell’s history, people or could be something quirky, he said.

“We’re looking for something that rolls off the tongue.”

He said the construction of the new facility was coming along well, and was on track for opening in November.

Halswell resident Lynda Downes said the new name needed to be something quirky and could in-corporate the swimming pool.

“It’s going to be quite a nice complex.”

Lettecia Kerr spent a lot of time in Halswell and thought the facility needed an interesting name.

“The community centre sounds boring, having said that we haven’t got an alternative.”

Lachlan Davidson, of Halswell,

said he would probably name it after his favourite sports team, but did not have any ideas.

The $22.9 million facility would include a library, indoor play area, cafe, outdoor activity area and a large multi-purpose space which could fit up to 300 people.

The existing Halswell Aquatic Centre, which is next to the new

3000 sq m building, would also be incorporated into the facility.

It was still operating during construction.

The competition began last week and would run until January 18. People can enter their submissions on the city council website.

The best suggestions would be

voted on by the public and the winner would be announced in March.

“Making a permanent contribu-tion to the city like that – going down in Christchurch history – is quite the reward in itself, but there will also be a family pass to any city council pool for the winning entry,” Mr Adamson said.

Search on for facility name

WORK IN PROGRESS: Construction takes place on the new Halswell library and community facility.

▌▌ IN BRIEF

Affordable homesThe Government has signed a de-velopment agreement for the con-struction of 237 homes as part of its affordable housing project. The site on the 11.5ha Awatea Hous-ing Development on Awatea Rd will have 89 homes at a purchase price of less than $400,000. The first homes at the development ex-pected to be completed in the first half of 2015.

Insurance claimsCanterbury University has agreed to settle its insurance claims un-der the Universities NZ collective insurance policy arising out of the earthquakes.  All of the sums re-ceived will be expended over the next few years in the replacement and remediation of the university’s buildings and facilities. The total settlement offer is $550 million of which $303 million has already been paid or had already been agreed to be paid. Payment is ex-pected to be made in full by 2015 on January 28.

Fire banThe city council is banning the lighting of fires in urban Christchurch from Sunday, December 21. A restricted fire season will also be in place in rural parts of the city meaning people who want to light outdoor fires will need a permit. Applications for a rural fire permit would be available from the city council. Exceptions were made for barbecues, pizza ovens and hangi as long as the property was serviced by a domestic water supply.

Children suf-fering from cancer had something to smile about when they attended their annual Christmas party.

The event, which was organised and funded by the Smulders Family Chari-table Trust, saw more than 200 people gather at Selwyn House school for three hours of carni-val-themed fun.

Charlotte and Pier Smulders are the owners of The Christch-urch Star Company.

Some of the fun included a merry-go-round, a bouncy castle, face painting, a visit from Santa and a number of different activi-ties.

Santa arrived on a YikeBike and gave presents to all of the children who attended.

It was the fourth year Mrs Smulders had organised the event after she took over from the late Diana and Robbie Robinson who had run the parties for more than 20 years.

Mrs Smulders said it was another fantastic and meaning-ful day for the children and their families.

The best part about organising the Christmas party was seeing

the children smile and the enjoyment on their faces, she said.

“It’s an escape for them.”She said the Christmas party

would continue to run in years to come.

Selwyn House assistant prin-cipal Juliana Rae said the event had run very well and the school would be more than happy to host it again.

“We provided the venue which we were delighted to be able to do.”

The organisers wished to thank Selwyn House, Marcel Gray from Pak ’N Save Wainoni, Jo Grams from Moda Fotografica, Frucor and Traiteur of Merivale. HAPPY: Maia Humphreys dressed

up for the day.

After a four-year wait trees causing problems for Halswell residents are set to be removed.

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has approved a request from a resident to remove 14 trees in Halswell Domain.

Well-known Halswell property owner Graeme Nicholl of Going Properties Ltd has offered to pay the $15,000 needed for their removal and replacement.

He said the trees were shading the boundary of Halswell Do-main and his adjoining subdivi-sion currently being developed off Halswell Rd.

Eight of the trees were silver birches, while the other six were deodar cedar.

Discussions were held with Mr Nicholl in 2010 for the removal of the trees, but were put off after the earthquakes.

The Halswell Residents’ As-sociation had also sought the removal of the trees due to their potential health hazards.

Scientists have linked silver birch trees to having many health issues such as nausea,

vomiting and lip swelling.Halswell United A.F.C had

said it would only support the removal if some trees were to remain.

But the club’s general manager Jenn Halliday said they had accepted the decision to remove all of the trees.

“It’s just the wind that blows across the domain. We just wanted to have our say and make them aware,” she said.

Community board chairman Mike Mora said the trees would be replanted with a better spe-cies.

“It will be an advantage to remove them as far as the layout of the domain is concerned with the addition of the new library in the area,” he said.

Christchurch has more than 4800 silver birch trees on public land.

The city council was consider-ing a working party be set up to draft a city-wide tree policy for it to meet the full costs of remov-ing and replacing the trees.

Removing and replacing all silver birches owned by the city council would cost about $6 million.

Accredited practising dietitian Duncan Hunter (independent advisor to Atkins Nutritionals) says that needn’t be the case if

we take a few simple steps to avoid the silly season spread.• Never go to a party hungry. Ever. Eat

dinner beforehand and avoid the buffet bar completely or have a light snack, such as an Atkins Chocolate Hazelnut Crisp Bar, and then only have a few healthy nibbles when you get there. Remember though, highly processed/high carb crackers and dips are not a healthy snack!

• Unless you have thewill power of steel, aiming to lose weight over Christmas is

Tips to avoid piling on

the party season pounds

With Christmas and the party season well and truly upon us, slipping into that New Year’s number may be beginning to look a little daunting, especially since research has shown most adults put on

between half and one-and-a-half kilos over Christmas, but don’t lose it afterwards.

probably unrealistic. So don’t. Just plan to maintain your pre-Christmas weight and work hard to do it. If you set unachievable goals, it will be way too easy to fail and then to jump off the wagon altogether.

• Sizeiseverything.Useasmallplateratherthan a dinner plate and dish up half of what you think you’ll want to make sure you don’t overeat.

• Trade low-fat for low-carb. There’s agrowing body of evidence showing that restricting carbohydrates is a more successful strategy for long-term weight loss than opting for low-fat products that are often laden with added sugars instead. The New Atkins programme advocates

limiting “bad” refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, pasta and processed foods, instead choosing “good” carbohydrates, from fresh fruit, vegetable, dairy as well as sources of lean protein.

• Whatever you do, steer clear of creamydips, pastries, chips and cakes.

• Hunteradvisesbringingyourownplateoflow-carb snacks to share to ensure there’s something at the party you know you can eat, such as veggie sticks with homemade hummus or beetroot dip, sashimi, meat and vegetable kebabs or fruit salad.

• Too much alcohol will show up on thescales, plain and simple. Of course the best weight loss strategy is to avoid

alcohol altogether, but if that’s not going to happen then go for small glasses, hide from diligent staff topping up drinks all night (finish one at a time) and for every glass of wine have a water as well.

• Try to find time to exercise. Take thekids for a bike ride. Ask for gym gear or personal training sessions as Christmas presents. Go for a long walk in the soft sand on holidays. Every bit you movemakes a difference.

A side supporting a teammate di-agnosed with cancer came out on top in this year’s summer league netball.

The Pink Ladies won the fast five women’s section courtesy of a bonus point they picked up in their only loss of the competition.

The Pink Ladies is a combina-tion of players from the Halswell A and B teams.

They decided on the name ‘Pink Ladies’ as one of the players in this year’s Halswell A team was diagnosed with breast cancer in October and were playing sup-port of her.

This season attracted 62 teams across six competition sections. Teams competed in fast five, women’s, under-17, under-13 and under-11 and mixed competition.

The mixed competition attract-ed the most teams, an indication that mixed social netball is alive and well in Christchurch.

Shooting Stars were unbeaten in the mixed competition, a team consisting of work mates and friends from high school who have been together for seven years.

Four teams went unbeaten: Kinetic Energy (women’s Sec-tion 2), Shooting Stars (mixed),

Charming Chicks (under-17) and Rockhard Rockets (under-11).

Entries are now open for a new competition in February and March. Entries are invited for traditional 7-a-side competition in women’s, mixed and under-17.

Competition dates for 2015 premier and winter competition have also been announced.

Premier competition starts on April 21, with senior grades in the afternoon of Anzac Day. Age group competition and second and third grades commence May 2.

Dates have been set taking into account the World Netball Championships in Sydney on August 7-16.

Wharenui School pupils have de-signed two new bus-back displays to give Christchurch residents a visible reminder of the need to protect and help restore local wa-terways.

Each design comes with a key messages about rivers and streams.

The two slogans chosen by the school pupils read “use your brains and not the drain” and “pick up rubbish – drains lead to rivers”.

All the pupils involved saw the finished designs when the buses made a visit to the school on Mon-day, December 15.

Pupils have been learning about Christchurch’s storm water system and how gutters and drains lead straight to local waterways.

They were then given the op-portunity to draw their own bus-back design – putting what they had learnt and what they felt was important about local waterways into the message.

FANTASTIC: Wharenui School pupil Amelia Woods stands beside one of the winning bus back designs.

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

It’s time to look back on another year in the city and to look ahead to 2015.

The fact that we have had two fatal fires and a continuation of the arson attacks on empty homes means we can’t really call it a success-ful year.

People continue to leave cooking unat-tended and any one of about a dozen of these incidents could have had tragic results.

The kitchen accounts for one third of all house fires.

Sadly I’m resigned to the fact we’ll have more of them next year.

The arson fires are another ongoing prob-lem that is unique to Christchurch.

Where people in other towns burn grass and the occasional rubbish bin in our city they seem to quickly graduate to empty struc-tures.

What doesn’t seem to get through to them is the gravity of the crime they commit.
