West Wyalong High School Newsletter SINCERITY MONDAY 21 MAY, 2018 TERM 2 WEEK 4 30 Dumaresq Street West Wyalong NSW 2671 T 02 69722700 F 02 69722236 E [email protected] Congratulations to our Years 7 and 9 students who participated in online NAPLAN testing during weeks 3 and 4. Students were tested in language conventions, writing, reading and numeracy. The online system will speed up the process of providing results to our teachers in relation to student growth in each of these areas. The feedback from our supervising teachers seemed to be quite positive in relation to student attitude and engagement with the online tests. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Ms Momot and Ms Dwyer for their role in co-ordinating the resources and the scheduling of the tests. The process seemed to run quite smoothly. School to work and further education continues to be a priority within our school plan and milestones. We are always seeking opportunities to expose our students to further information and opportunities related to careers. We would like to thank our community volunteers who will be speaking to our Year 9 and 10 students about their experiences. This will be part of their Futures lessons and we continue to seek the support from our community to engage with our students about possible career opportunities. Last week, Mr Pokoney and I were able to have a positive meeting with representatives from Evolution Mining in relation to student career choices and possible work experiences. If students are seeking to gain some work experience, please talk to Mr Pokoney. Hopefully there may be some opportunities to link in with some Evolution school based traineeships. Congratulations to Mackenzie Parkes and Catherine Hood who are representing Western at the CHS basketball championships in Port Macquarie. Chaz Bishop has also been rewarded for his outstanding efforts for Western basketball and has been selected in the NSW CHS side. We continue to see some remarkable sporting achievements from our school and we look forward to further achievements throughout the year. CWA STATE CONFERENCE LAND COOKERY COMPETITION The Bellarwi CWA would like to express how proud they are of Charlotte Whiley who entered the CWA State Conference Land Cookery Competition. Charlotte won both at branch and group level. While Charlotte didn’t win a prize her entry was very good. There were 30 entries at State Level. A wonderful effort. They would like to encourage all the High School children to enter again this year. The Land Cookery officer Julie Crerar will be in touch with the school and this year 18 years and under will be cooking a Cinnamon Tea Cake, cooked in a 20cm tin, cinnamon topping as per recipe that will be in the June 2018 Journal. Land Cookery is open to both female and male and you don’t have to be a member to enter. Bellarwi CWA pays the entry fee for the students.

SYDNEY WRITERS FESTIVAL On Thursday on the 3rd of May, myself, Bronte and 18 other students from Year 8 and 9 went on an excursion to Sydney to attend the Sydney Writer's Festival and experience Mamma Mia the musical. At midday we got on the bus to begin our long 7-hour trip to Sydney. We stopped at Yass for lunch where we got to choose between KFC and Macca's. We travelled for another 5 and a half hours (Including a few toilet breaks) until we finally arrived in Sydney.

Our first stop before we went to our motel was to have dinner at the mall where we had a choice between fast food and healthy food (we chose fast food). After that we had just enough time to check out our rooms before Mr. Pokoney dragged us back outside to go for a walk, this was okay though, as it was just a small trip to Woolworths where we were able to choose a snack to share (or not). We then walked all the way back to rest up for the busy day ahead of us. On Friday we woke up at 6:30 to have breakfast at 7, the breakfast was provided by the motel. We went back to our rooms to get ready for a big day out at the Sydney Writer's Festival. With the skilful driving of Mr. Pokoney, we finally made it into Parramatta where we found the Riverside Theatre. After waiting patiently outside the doors, we were finally lead into the theatre where we were lucky enough to get some of the best seats to see the authors Jesse Anderson, Patrick Ness, Alison Cogger and Kirsty Eagar. They

all talked about their books and what inspired them to become an author. After each talk -the students inside the theater were given time to ask the authors questions. Afterwards we were given the opportunity to buy some of their books and get them signed and get a photo with the author. After all this excitement we had just enough time to have a quick lunch near the motel, we hurried back to our rooms to clean ourselves up and head on our way to Paddy's Markets where we had the opportunity to have dinner and browse in some of the shops. We headed for the train station where we took two trains into Central. Before we knew it, we found ourselves inside the Sydney Capitol Theatre. The show was amazing! I don't think there was a single person in the theatre that wasn't singing or dancing in the end. It was midnight when we made it back to the motel. We woke up early the next morning to have a quick breakfast and head on the road again back to West Wyalong. Thank you to Mr Meredith for organising the trip, Miss Raine Turner for putting up with us and to Mr Pokoney who (despite a few hiccups) got us safely to Sydney and home again. TOM KEMP SHEILD RUGBY LEAGUE – U16’S On Thursday the 10th May 2018, West Wyalong High School hosted Forbes High School at Ron Crowe Oval in Round 2 of the Tom Kemp Shield Rugby League competition. In a very tough game of football, West Wyalong came away winners 18 points to 4 points. The West Wyalong boys should be very proud of their efforts. They were outstanding in defence throughout the game and ran hard and straight into holes in attack. It was a fantastic team

OPEN GIRLS LEAGUE TAG West Wyalong High School entered two teams into the NRL South West Open Girls League Tag Championships in Leeton on 18/5/18. Both teams played some entertaining football and improved throughout the day. The senior team won 2/3 games, losing in a close game to eventual winners St Frances. Our junior team were unlucky not to win any of their three games, but it was impressive how they rose to the challenge of playing faster football. Congratulations to all students who displayed fantastic sportsmanship and effort all day! Big thank you to Miss Bergan and Mr Lees for coaching, driving the bus and organising the excursion.
