A NEW ERAWVU Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President Shane Lyons named coach Tim Flynn the school’s ninth wrestling coach in April 2018. Flynn came to West Virginia from Edinboro, where he spent the past 21 years building the Fighting Scots into a wrestling powerhouse. He compiled a 223-95-5 career record at Edinboro to become the school's all-time winningest coach and a member of its Hall of Fame. His accomplishments at Edinboro totaled 150 national qualifiers, 38 All-Americans, 64 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions and 97 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champions. He led the Fighting Scots to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, 14 top-20 finishes and 18 top-25 finishes.

SERIES VS. IOWA STATESunday’s match is the 20th all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and the Cyclones. Though not the most prolific, it is one of the longest-running series in WVU program history, with both teams going head-to-head for the first time in 1922. ISU leads the all-time series, 17-2, with both programs joining the Big 12 Conference in the summer of 2012.

KEY NOTES IN THE SERIESLast season, West Virginia dropped a heartbreaking match to Iowa State, 25-17, at the Hilton Coliseum, in Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 21. However, the Mountaineers earned their first-ever Big 12 win against the Cyclones in 2017, as now-junior heavyweight Brandon Ngati pinned Joe Scanlan in the final bout of the day to claim a thrilling comeback win over ISU, 22-20, on Feb. 12, inside the WVU Coliseum. The 2017 victory marked WVU’s first win over Iowa State in 14 years.

SCOUTING THE CYCLONESISU is fresh off a 29-17 victory at Rider on Thursday night. In the dual, five of the Cyclones seven wins came by bonus-point margin. Individually, Iowa State has five wrestlers nationally ranked by Intermat in Sunday’s probable lineup. 197-pounder Willie Miklus is the squad’s highest-ranked Cyclone at No. 6, followed by 133-pounder Austin Gomez at No. 7. Of note, Gomez leads the team in nearfall points having already scored 26 on the season.

LAST TIMEOUTWest Virginia is coming off a tough loss to No. 3 Oklahoma State on Friday, dropping a 40-3 contest to the Cowboys at the WVU Coliseum. Sophomore Nick Kiussis, who is ranked at No. 20 via Intermat, picked up the Mountaineers lone victory of the evening, claiming a 6-4 decision in sudden victory over No. 19 Andrew Shomers at 165 pounds. With the win, Kiussis topped his third ranked opponent of the season, moving to 15-5 on the year. Of note redshirt senior Christian Monserrat’s win streak in dual action came to an end on Friday, as he dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 5 Kaden Gfeller at 149 pounds. Despite the loss, Monserrat continues to lead the team with 38 match points and 20 takedowns on the year.

LOOKING AHEADWVU will hit the road for the next three matches to close out the month of January. The team will start the road swing in Orem, Utah, as WVU faces CSU Bakersfield in a neutral-site matchup on Jan. 25, at 5 p.m., followed by a dual against Big 12 affiliate Utah Valley at 9 p.m. The Roadrunners own a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, with the last meeting taking place in 2017. West Virginia met Utah Valley for the first time in program history last season, as the Wolverines walked away with the 24-9 neutral-site victory. From there, the Mountaineers will trek to Laramie, Wyoming, to square off with Wyoming, the squad's second Big 12 match of the weekend, on Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. Wyoming holds a 1-0 all-time series advantage, though the squads have not faced each other head-to-head since 2009.

TOUGH SLATEWest Virginia has faced eight teams ranked inside the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Top-25 Poll this season, and Iowa State is WVU's sixth opponent ranked in the top 16. Of note, the Mountaineers upset No. 20 North Dakota State earlier this season for their first win over a top-25 program. This year, WVU will face seven opponents that finished in the top 25 at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

LEADING THE PACKRedshirt freshman Noah Adams, redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt and Monserrat were appointed as this year's captains, with each wrestler bringing a different leadership trait to the team room this season. Monserrat is one of two seniors on the 2018-19 roster, donning the most experience over Schmitt and Adams in a Mountaineer singlet. However, Schmitt is the only Mountaineer to return to the mat this season as an NCAA Qualifier. Adams, a native of Coal City, West Virginia, gained valuable experience wrestling unattached in several tournaments last season.

A TRIO OF MOUNTAINEERS RANK INSIDE THE TOP 20

A trio of Mountaineers enter the week national ranked by Intermat. Schmitt is the highest-ranked Mountaineer, moving up one spot from last week to No. 15 at 133 pounds. Monserrat checks into the rankings for the first time in his career at No. 16 at 149 pounds, following a 3-1 upset victory over then-No. 4 Justin Oliver of NC State on Jan. 13. Kiussis sits at No. 20, despite a 9-5 loss to Thomas Bullard of NC State, who was ranked at No. 15 by The Open Mat.

MONSERRAT MAKING MOVESMonserrat is putting together quite the story in his final season as a Mountaineer. A 3-1 win over Oliver (NC State) last Sunday ran Monserrat’s 2018-19 dual record to a perfect 11-0 before Friday night's loss to Gfeller (Oklahoma State). For the year, Monserrat has only lost four matches, one of which came to Oliver by technical fall, 18-3, at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic in November. During that period, he has wins over three previous NCAA qualifiers (Oliver, Davion Jeffries of Oklahoma and Ryan Blees of Virginia Tech). Of note, Monserrat competed at 141 pounds as a redshirt junior, recording an 18-16 overall mark, with five major decisions, two tech. falls and one pin.

MONSERRAT'S UPSET WINIn the sixth bout of the day vs. NC State, Monserrat and Oliver remained scoreless entering the second period. Oliver deferred his choice, as Monserrat chose to start on his feet, earning a takedown for the 2-1 lead into the final frame. Oliver then elected to start the third on the bottom, but he could not escape, as Monserrat rode him through the period to add on the riding time point at the end of regulation for the 3-1 victory.

REA RETURNS TO THE MAT AT 141The 141-pound weight class has been a back-and-forth battle since redshirt senior Joe Wheeling suffered a season ending injury in early November. Freshman Caleb Rea most recently topped classmate Luke Martin in a wrestle-off, sliding into this week's starting slot. The Weirton, West Virginia, native holds a 13-6 overall record on the year and a 1-3 mark in dual action. He was a four-time Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) placer, capturing an OVAC title his senior year at 132 pounds.

NGATI COMES IN HOTNgati returned to the starting lineup in mid-December, dropping back-to-back matches against ranked foes (No. 13 Demetrius Thomas of Pitt and No. 7 Billy Miller of Virginia Tech) before re-entering the win column for the 2018-19 season. However, Ngati's five-match win streak quickly came to an end of Friday, as No. 2 Derek White of Oklahoma State pinned Ngati in 2 minutes, 23 seconds. Despite the loss, Ngati still holds a winning record on the year, sitting at 9-7. The Gaithersburg, Maryland, native earned the starting role for WVU the past two seasons, though redshirt junior David Smith went 2-0 at wrestle-offs in late October to win the starting spot over Ngati at the beginning of the season.

FRESH FACESTrue freshman James Wujek is listed as a probable starter for the fourth time this season. The Prosper, Texas, native donned a Mountaineer singlet for the first time in his career on Jan. 4, falling to Anthony Mantanona of Oklahoma in 1:27 at 174 pounds. Wujek finished with a 137-39 record at Prosper High and was a three-time state qualifier, finishing as the runner-up his senior year.

JOURNEYMEN COLLEGIATE CLASSICFive Mountaineers took first place in their respective pools, as West Virginia collected 217 points for a seventh-place finish at the 2018 Journeymen MyHouse Collegiate Classic on Nov. 11, in Schenectady, New York. The tournament field featured competition from 17 universities, including six teams ranked inside the College NWCA/USA Today Top-25 Poll. Redshirt freshman Joey Thomas (125), Monserrat (149), Kiussis (165), Adams (197) and Smith (HWT) each earned a first-place finish in their respective pools.
