SERIES VS. ARMYFriday's match marks the third meeting between the Mountaineers and Black Knights, though the two squads have not faced each other head-to-head since 1993. The all-time series is knotted at one win apiece, as West Virginia picked up an 18-8 victory over Army in its first-ever meeting in 1932.

SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTSArmy, who is receiving votes in this week's USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Top-25 Poll, is currently on a three-match win streak. The Black Knights most recently claimed a 28-10 conference win over Penn on Jan. 20, at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Individually, the Black Knights have seven wrestlers ranked inside the top 33 of the first coaches' panel rankings released on Jan. 24. 197-pounder Rocco Caywood is the squad's highest-ranked Black Knight at No. 4, followed by 174-pounder Ben Harvey at No. 19. Harvey leads the team with 21 wins, followed by Caywood with 20. Of note, both grapplers have a total of six dual wins on the year.

LAST TIMEOUTWVU won two-of-three matches on the road last week, picking up a pair of wins in Orem, Utah, on Jan. 25. West Virginia captured a 21-16 victory over CSU Bakersfield, followed by a 26-13 win over Big 12 foe Utah Valley. Redshirt senior Christian Monserrat (149), sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) and redshirt freshmen Joey Thomas (125) and Noah Adams (197) each posted a 2-0 record on the evening. The two-match win streak was snapped on Jan. 27, as WVU dropped a 33-15 match to No. 11 Wyoming at the UniWyo Sports Complex, in Laramie, Wyoming. Adams earned a pin at 197 pounds, while Monserrat claimed an 8-4 decision at 149 to cap the dual.

KEY MATCH-UPThe most anticipated match of the weekend will be Adams and Caywood at 197 pounds. Adams ranks inside FloWrestling's Top-20 Poll for the first time in his career, sitting at No. 19 in his respective weight class. A Coal City, West Virginia, native, Adams was named WVU's Student-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 28 for his efforts put forth on the road last week, most notably winning by fall over a top-20 opponent in Wyoming's Cale Davidson on Jan. 27. Adams averaged six points per match last week, while scoring a total of five takedowns and three reversals in his three matches. Caywood, who is ranked at No. 4 by a trio of media outlets, marks Adams' highest-ranked opponent of the season. Adams is now 13-10 on the season and has two victories over ranked foes. He also is 4-4 in Big 12 action.

SENIOR NIGHT: JOE WHEELINGJoe Wheeling is a five-year member of the Mountaineer wrestling team, who spent one season as a starter at 141 pounds. He placed fifth at the 2017 Big 12 Wrestling Championship, earning the starting spot in mid-November to post 11 wins on the year. Wheeling boasts more than 20 career wins and nine bonus-point victories. Double-majoring in geology and civil engineering, he has earned mention on the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He also landed on the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 First Team. From Waterford, Pennsylvania, Wheeling is joined tonight by his parents, Mike and Theresa.

SENIOR NIGHT: CHRISTIAN MONSERRATMonserrat is a five-year member of the WVU wrestling team, who has seen action at both 141 and 149 pounds. This season, Monserrat moved up to the 149-pound slot and is putting together quite the story in his final season as a Mountaineer. Monserrat ranks inside the top 20 of several wrestling publications and has a team-leading 18 wins on the year. A 3-1 win over No. 4 Justin Oliver of NC State on Jan. 13 marked Monserrat’s highest-ranked win of his career. Monserrat will finish four active seasons with more than 65 wins, as he looks to make his

first NCAA Tournament appearance in March. The Methuen, Massachusetts, native is currently pursing a degree in sport management and is interning with WVU’s Athletic Marketing Office. He is accompanied tonight by his father Roberto, his sister Karisah and his girlfriend Johnna Karolcik.

TOUGH SLATEWest Virginia has faced 10 teams ranked inside the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Top-25 Poll this season. Of note, the Mountaineers upset No. 20 North Dakota State earlier this season for their first win over a top-25 program.

LOOKING AHEADFollowing a three-week hiatus, the regular season will come to a close on Sunday, Feb. 24, in Brookings, South Dakota, where the Mountaineers and Jackrabbits square off in a 7 p.m. ET match. South Dakota State, who finished 12th at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series.

LEADING THE PACKRedshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt, Monserrat and Adams were appointed as this year's captains, with each wrestler bringing a different leadership trait to the team room this season. Monserrat is one of two seniors on the 2018-19 roster, donning the most experience over Schmitt and Adams in a Mountaineer singlet. However, Schmitt is the only Mountaineer to return to the mat this season as an NCAA Qualifier. Adams gained valuable experience wrestling unattached in several tournaments last season.

FIRST NCAA COACHES' PANEL RANKINGS RELEASED

The first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2018-19 season was released on Jan. 24, with five Mountaineer wrestlers appearing in the top 33 of their respective weight classes. The final rankings will be used in determining qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Schmitt ranks 14th at 133 pounds, while Monserrat sits in 20th in his respective pool of 149 pounds. Kiussis, who shares the team lead in wins (18) with Monserrat, ranks 18th at 165 pounds. Additionally, junior Brandon Ngati (HWT) and Adams (197) each enter the coaches' panel rankings for the first time in their careers at No. 32 in their respective weight classes. Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn allocation spots for their qualifying tournaments for the championships.

MONSERRAT MAKING MOVESA 3-1 win over No. 4 Justin Oliver of NC State (Jan. 13) ran Monserrat’s 2018-19 dual record to a perfect 11-0 before suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 5 Kaden Gfeller of Oklahoma State on Jan. 18. For the year, Monserrat has only lost five matches, one of which came to Oliver by technical fall, 18-3, at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic in November. During that period, he has wins over four previous NCAA qualifiers (Oliver, Davion Jeffries of Oklahoma, Ryan Blees of Virginia Tech and Russell Rohlfing of CSU Bakersfield). Of note, Monserrat competed at 141 pounds as a redshirt junior, recording an 18-16 overall mark, with five major decisions, two tech. falls and one pin.

MONSERRAT'S UPSET WINIn the sixth bout of the day vs. NC State, Monserrat and Oliver remained scoreless entering the second period. Oliver deferred his choice, as Monserrat chose to start on his feet, earning a takedown for the 2-1 lead into the final frame. Oliver then elected to start the third on bottom, but he could not escape, as Monserrat rode him through the period to add on the riding time point at the end of regulation for the 3-1 victory.

141-POUND BATTLESThe 141-pound weight class has been a back-and-forth battle since Wheeling suffered a season-ending injury in early November. Freshman Caleb Rea and teammate Luke Martin were both listed as probable starters last week, with Martin earning the nod in two-of-three matches. Martin is 9-10 on the year and 3-7 in dual action, while Rea is 13-8 on the year and 1-5 in dual action.

NGATI COMES IN HOTNgati returned to the starting lineup in mid-December, dropping back-to-back matches against ranked foes (No. 13 Demetrius Thomas of Pitt and No. 7 Billy Miller of Virginia Tech) before re-entering the win column on Dec. 29 at the South Beach Duals. The 285-pound grappler recorded a 3-0 mark at the two-day event and rode a five-match win streak into the new year before No. 2 Derek White of Oklahoma State snapped his win streak with a first-period pin on Jan. 18. The Gaithersburg, Maryland, native earned the starting role for WVU the past two seasons, though redshirt junior David Smith wrestled in four duals at the beginning of the season.

JOURNEYMEN COLLEGIATE CLASSICFive Mountaineers took first place in their respective pools, as West Virginia collected 217 points for a seventh-place finish at the 2018 Journeymen MyHouse Collegiate Classic on Nov. 11, in Schenectady, New York. The tournament field featured competition from 17 universities, including six teams ranked inside the College NWCA/USA Today Top-25 Poll. Thomas (125), Monserrat (149), Kiussis (165), Adams (197) and Smith (HWT) each earned a first-place finish in their respective pools.

HOKIE OPENWest Virginia sent 16 wrestlers to compete in the 2018 Hokie Open, at Berglund Arena, in Roanoke, Virginia, on Nov. 4. Ten Mountaineers finished in the top five of their respective weight classes, with Schmitt (133) and Adams (197) winning division titles. Schmitt went 5-0 in the 133-pound open division to claim his first tournament win of his career. Adams also recorded a perfect 4-0 mark to capture the 197-pound freshman/sophomore division title. Additionally, Moore (157) and Kiussis (165) each earned third-place finishes in the open division, while Smith placed fifth in the heavyweight open

division. Five Mountaineers also joined Adams on the podium in the freshman/sophomore division. Freshman Josh Ramirez (174) and redshirt freshman KJ Fenstermacher (125) each collected third-place finishes, while sophomore Hunter DeLong placed fourth at 184 pounds. Additionally, redshirt freshman Sean Mullican and Thomas each claimed a fifth-place finish in the 285-pound and 125-pound pool, respectively.

A NEW ERAWVU Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President Shane Lyons named coach Tim Flynn the school’s ninth wrestling coach in April 2018. Flynn came to West Virginia from Edinboro, where he spent the past 21 years building the Fighting Scots into a wrestling powerhouse. He compiled a 223-95-5 career record at Edinboro to become the school's all-time winningest coach and a member of its Hall of Fame. His accomplishments at Edinboro totaled 150 national qualifiers, 38 All-Americans, 64 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions and 97 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champions. He led the Fighting Scots to five top-10 finishes at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, 14 top-20 finishes and 18 top-25 finishes.

BIG 12 ADDS AFFILIATE MEMBERSThe Big 12 Conference added Fresno State and Northern Iowa in July of 2017 as affiliate members to give the league a 12-team field. The new additions joined Air Force, Iowa State, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley, West Virginia and Wyoming.

BIG 12 WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCED

The 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championship will be held at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from March 9-10, for the third year in a row. Tickets are on sale now. Conference instiutions hosted the wrestling championships on campus from 1997-2015. The 2016 event was held in Kansas City's Sprint Center.
