After all why did you join Ulysses? To be Loyal. e.g. National Rally - Loyal Members must be aware of deadlines and closing date being 5th March 2017. Members should timorously report to the Chapter of their intention of attending or not. Not to wait until the 4th or 5th March to let the chap- ter know. Time: e.g. Loyal Members are time conscience and will be on time for scheduled rides etc. Unacceptable that members arrive late and hold up those that were on time. Frustrating for member Sixty and over when members are not on time. Regalia: A loyal Ulysses member should be always be proud to wear his/her jacket with the colours displayed. No plain black Jackets as that not a sign of a Loyal Ulysses Chapter Member. Yes but a Black Jacket with a Ulysses Patch is acceptable. Social: When social are announced members should voluntary offer assistance e.g. making and/or supply of salads, snacks etc so that the load or burden is spread amongst the members. Wear regalia to all socials with proud. Divorce: not the one between a man & a woman but that from the Chapter. If a member gets feed up and disillusioned in a chapter and Ulysses can satisfy a person then he/she should have the courtesy to send a short letter (or email) to the President stating his/her resigning and on leaving and saying goodbye hand back both the large and the small front being the property of Ulysses SA. Back to discipline, it should not be required that a President come knocking on your door to collect them. Good Manners: Yes, there is a Ulysses Constitution (Hannes showed all the copy in his hand) but at the end of the day if a member just has good manners and respects others then it won’t be necessary to open up the constitution for enforcement. Saturday’s Social with NatCom

18 February 2017 - 14h00

A Social braai had been scheduled so as to coincide with the Ulysses SA National Committee’s visit to the West Rand Chapter. The NatCom

members namely Hannes Wentzel : President, Vernon de la Rey : Vice President, Leon Roux : Treasurer, Julian Middleton : Secretary &

Administrator.

After introductions complete, the chin wagging got going over some drinks and snacks. Many settling for cold drinks as they were responsible

road users. However, those that were Uber-ed enjoyed a pint or two or was it six - so who was counting anyway? Then at approx 15h00

Daniel gathered all together and handed over to Hannes who wanted to say a few words. Hannes thanked the Chapter for the invite and stated

that it was only a pleasure to accept the invite and to join in with the Chapter Social. In Hannes’s brief statement some of the salient points

stood out all regarding “Loyalty”.

Ulysses Member and Loyalty:

Due Dates: e.g. Loyal Member’s Chapter and National subs need to be paid on time. After all why did you join Ulysses? To be Loyal.

e.g. National Rally - Loyal Members must be aware of deadlines and closing date being 5th March 2017. Members should

timorously report to the Chapter of their intention of attending or not. Not to wait until the 4th or 5th March to let the chap-

ter know.

Time: e.g. Loyal Members are time conscience and will be on time for scheduled rides etc. Unacceptable that members arrive late

and hold up those that were on time. Frustrating for member Sixty and over when members are not on time.

Regalia: A loyal Ulysses member should be always be proud to wear his/her jacket with the colours displayed. No plain black

Jackets as that not a sign of a Loyal Ulysses Chapter Member. Yes but a Black Jacket with a Ulysses Patch is acceptable.

Social: When social are announced members should voluntary offer assistance e.g. making and/or supply of salads, snacks etc so

that the load or burden is spread amongst the members. Wear regalia to all socials with proud.

Divorce: not the one between a man & a woman but that from the Chapter. If a member gets feed up and disillusioned in a chapter

and Ulysses can satisfy a person then he/she should have the courtesy to send a short letter (or email) to the President stating

his/her resigning and on leaving and saying goodbye hand back both the large and the small front being the property of

Ulysses SA. Back to discipline, it should not be required that a President come knocking on your door to collect them.

Good Manners: Yes, there is a Ulysses Constitution (Hannes showed all the copy in his hand) but at the end of the day if a member just

has good manners and respects others then it won’t be necessary to open up the constitution for enforcement.

Word of Thanks: Hannes thanked to all the Chapter members that attended the social function today.

Chapter Social with NatCom (Continued from Page 1)

Saturday 18 February 2017

In Closing: Hannes read out:-

May the sun always rise in front of you

May the rain fail behind you

May the wind follow you

May the Angels guard your travel

May you be safe through rolling hills

May the eagles guide you to your destination

May the moon light guide you in the night if you are driving in the night

Special Word of Thanks: Hannes thanked Kathy as Hostess and for opening up her home for the social

function & handed over a small token in appreciation.

Bikers “Air Bag” Jacket.

Julian showed the members a special imported Biker’s

Jacket which on detection that the biker has left his/her

bike during an accident sets off a gas canister which in-

flates the Jacket’s Compartments and in doing so assists

by possibly reducing the level or seriousness of injures

by creating a large air buffer. The jacket can be reused

after its activation by sourcing local cartridges refilling.

Julian stated that his last serious accident and his sur-

vival thereafter was for the fact he had been wearing

such a safety jacket and it had activated correctly and

thus saving him from possible even greater trauma.

If any person is interested in sourcing such a safety

jacket they are welcome to contact Julian directly.

With all the formalities complete the members

started to braai, wet the throats a bit and chin wag.

Stop - Rewind - Rephrase - The Chapter’s Ap-

pointed Highly Skilled Braaier, Kurt started to

braai the meat whilst under the guidance and micro

management of Grant who has intimate knowledge of the workings of the braai he had built in.

And after all Grant didn’t want the Honourable Guests to be served with burnt or cremated meat.

Chapter Social with NatCom (Continued from Page 2)

Saturday 18 February 2017

As the Chapter President Daniel has said that it was a honour for the Chapter to Host the National Committee at our Chapter so that we

can all get to know and understand one another better. Thanking the 9 Chapter members who made an effort to attend the Joint Social.

General Observations & Comment:

The main theme carried through the NatCom visit being Loyalty - Loyalty as a Chapter

Member to the Chapter and to Ulysses SA and to wear the Ugly Bugger Back Patch at all

outings and socials with pride. No plain jackets acceptable. Chapter Members are also en-

couraged to ride at least once a month at least. Also to be on time. Or else your bike could

face the same fate as the bike (right in the photo) which tells a story of disinterest in riding

thus total lack of loyalty to the chapter for some length of time.

The Sgt At Arms is busy drafting a matrix sheet so as to identify the active vs the non-active

members. A Loyal Ulysses Chapter Member partakes in Rides, Socials, Day Jols, Rallies

on a regular basis. Once or twice a year participation is just not good enough. So look deep

and if the glove fits give it some serious thought and start riding again to prove your loyalty to your Chapter. Hoping to see more of you at Pinehaven soon.

Road Captain

Hannes presented Hercules with his Chapter Road Captain Scroll. The scroll had been on a back order and had arrived in time for the

Social. Congratulations Hercules.

Ulysses SA National Committee President Hannes handing

over the Road Captain Scroll to Hercules No place for the salads and pap & sous on that plate.

Pensioners, remember, get paid the 15th of the month and

not the end of the month.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST RUN 19th February 2017

Only the 3 real bikers pitched on Sunday at Pinehaven with the

weather looking like it would rain at any moment. Jackie, Mike

& Allan.

Allan had posted on the UlyChat proposing Amanzingwe Lodge

for the Breakfast run.

Jackie and Mike agreed to this venue and Jackie said it would

suit her as from there she could go the Xkulcha shop in Harties.

Mike took the lead and Allan the sweeper. Jackie wedged in be-

tween the men. Route via the satellite road was taken to Broederstroom and where Jackie broke out and played a bit.

The Amanzingwe Lodge welcomed us in and the Buffett Breakfast set at R95 per

head is just so reasonable and yet so very tasty. After the chin wag and meal was

finished we said our goodbyes and Jackie was riding to Chameleon Village whist

Allan followed Mike to where Mike turned into his farm where after Allan trav-

elled back home alone.

Great morning ride and meal. Cloudy but no rain at all. Great riding weather it was.

All reported safe at home via Ulychat.

SWEEPER.

What is a Sweeper?

A brief note of just some of the functions:

He/She is usually an experienced Road Captain who is then positioned at the

rear of the group that would help fellow riders should they go down, binned

it, or if an rider has mechanical issues. During a group ride the Road Captain would take the position to delicately discourage cagers from slingshotting

and overtaking some of the group as two lanes are going to merge into one to

prevent the car being caught up in the middle of the group of bikers. Also

should a Cager be caught up side by side with a group of bikes with no place

to go it would cause panic for both cager and bikers and a potentially danger-

ous situation that needs be avoided. The Road Captain in lead will slow the

group down and the “Slingshot” driver can get by as he is waved on to pass the group before the group runs out of lane. In other cases the

lead Road Captain can call single file and move over to create more space for the cage to manoeuvre. All of these actions are more easily

handled by a lead and sweep team combination.
