In this weekly feature written by

Mrs. Ashaba’s fourth grade class,

students showcase events happen-

ing at the school, as well as other

important information. This

week, students discuss TerraCy-

cling.

What is TerraCycling? This

year, WOLCS is involved in

with Terracycle. Through

this program, things that

usually thrown away will be

recycled here at the school.

The more we TerraCycle, the

more money we get for our

school!

WOLCS already currently

recycling paper, metal, and

plastics with Waste Manage-

ment. TerraCycling is differ-

ent. With TerraCycling, we

can recycle additional items

AND get money for our

school. Here are some things

that can be TerraCycled:

Used markers, pens, high-

lighters, and mechanical

pencils

- Elmer’s brand gluesticks

and bottles

- Tape dispensers or rolls

- Silver juice pouches (no

straws please!)

- Chip bags & empty Ziplock

baggies

- Candy Wrappers (Mars/

Wrigley/Cadbury only!)

- Plastic paper towel wrap-

pers and diaper wrappers

- Lunchables containers

- Lip gloss tubes

items into a special bin in

the main office. In the

lunchroom, students are al-

ready able to TerraCycle

their lunch items.

With your help, our school

can get money just from

TerraCycling. In past years,

we have raised up to $173.00

with this program. This

year, we want more students

and parents to be involved.

Our Voices - PARENTS SPEAK!

Last night, under the

leadership of the Litera-

cy Department, West

Oak Lane Charter

School was transformed

into a Winter Wonder-

land as students, fami-

lies, and staff celebrated

the Winter Carnival.

The evening began with

Page 2 PARENT ALERT

In this weekly feature, we want to hear from you -

the parents and families

who make WOLCS thrive. Let us know your thoughts

and comments on the question posed.

This week’s question: “Nominate a teacher

who has gone above the call of duty. Tell us

why.”

We will accept opinion arti-

cles on the topic listed. The

suggested length is 100 words or less. Submissions

may be sent in any of these ways:

By e-mail to: [email protected]

Or via the main office to the attention of:

P. Saintil-Middleton, Sub-ject: “Parents Speak.”

While we will read all sub-missions, we reserve the

right to select articles for

publishing.

Here are some of your re-

sponses to last week’s question:

“Tell about some of your positive experi-

ences with WOLCS

staff.”

“I like the way the teach-ers stay in communication

with the parents and keep

us informed.”

“I like the ability to com-

municate with my child’s teacher at any time and

the varied activities for parents to be involved .”

The staff is very personal with the students.”

inspired performances

by WOLCS’ own cheer-

leading team followed

by IllStyle and Peace, a

performing group that

showcased the history

of hip hop. As families

placed votes on their

smart phones in the

Best Winter Door con-

test, students joined

staff members in making

hands-on winter crafts.

On the second floor, visi-

tors experienced first-

hand how scientists see

and investigate the world

with demonstrations by

The Franklin Institute.

The event was a wonder-

ful beginning the holiday

season.

FOCUS ON MATH

Page 3 Volume I, Issue 11

Math Office on Monday,

December 10, 2012.

Congratulations!

Finding the mean game

Each player finds the total value of the digits on their cards, then divides the total by the number in the set to find the mean. Example: Cards Ace (1), 2, 4, 6, 8, 8, 9. Sum = 38 Divide by 7 (round to the nearest whole number). Mean = 5 so Score = 5 Finding the median game

Each player finds the median card in their hand and that number is their point value for that round. Using the hand above, the median = 6 since it’s the value of the middle card. Score = 6

Finding the mode game

Each player finds the mode which rep-resents their points for that round.

No mode = 0 points

Two or more combine points for score.

Finding the range game

Each player calculates the range of his or her set of data and that number is their point value for that round. Using the hand above, the range would be

9-2= 7 Score = 7. First to score deter-mined amount wins!

Have Fun!

Winter is in the air, the holi-day season has just begun,

but before you know it Spring will have

sprung and it will be PSSA time again.

Every month, the Math department will provide parents with helpful tips on how to make students feel prepared and confident during PSSA testing.

The focus this month will be on

Mean, Median, Mode, Range!

Card games that will help your child re-member these terms and also practice the meaning of them in a fun way.

What You’ll Need: deck of cards (Ace=1) etc., pencil and paper

Deal out 7 cards to each player. (Be sure there are a maximum of 4 play-ers!) Ask each player to arrange their cards in sequential order. Then, de-pending upon which game you want to play, follow the directions below.

Congratulations Ms. Fean’s

third grade class. They were

the Study Island Blue Rib-

bon winners for the month

of November, earning 20%

of their total ribbons in No-

vember alone!

Congratulations to Mrs. Stan-

ton’s sixth grade class. They

were the First In Math Stickers

winners, earning and average of

233 stickers per student!

The winning classes will enjoy a

pizza party on behalf of the
