He was nervousas he walkedthrough the star-lit park, his feetcrunching on thecinder-coveredsidewalk underflickering gaslamps.

Although it was1966, Eric alwaysfelt that he wasreturning to theVictorian era whenhe entered thegloomy byways.

The house was cer-tainly not Victorian. The flat-roofed bun-galow had walls dec-orated with strangeabstract designsmore suited to theJohn MooresExhibition.

Eric paused at thegate and put on hismask. Should he con-tinue? The invitationhad come through thesixth-form – friendsof friends who hadthe house to them-selves for theevening.

Cathedral came cas-cading out of theunusual dwelling. Hecould not understandwhy he’d nevernoticed the housebefore while walkingin Sandfield Park.

Young peoplefilled the rooms, some attemptingconversation andothers in quiet rever-ie. All were wearingmasks ranging fromthe grotesque to thestylish.

Eric felt slightlyunder-dressed in hisplain, Lone Ranger-type creation. Hescanned the gather-ing trying to recog-

nise people beneaththeir disguises.

Was that Murphfrom 6L? Could thatbe Mabel from 6U?He could not tellfrom their voicesbecause the musicwas so loud.

The girls woreminiskirts, the boyscolourful hipstertrousers. All weredeathly pale in thesubdued light.

He first becameaware of her throughthe corner of his eye.She was looking athim intently, her facedominated by a sim-ple black cat mask.He realised they

were the only twowearing blackmasks.

They sat togetherin the garden enjoy-ing the warm sum-mer air. This was herhome, she told him,her green eyes star-ing intently frombehind the mask.

They danced to theintoxicating slowdrone of Set Me Freeplayed over and overagain on the radi-ogram.

At midnight theykissed long and deep, the softness andsweetness of her lipssending his headspinning.

“Come this Friday. We will wear themasks,” she told Ericas he joined thosedrifting away into thesultry night.

Friday came andhis heart thumped inanticipation. Againhe paused at the gate, carefully putting onhis mask.

He walked awk-wardly up the longdrive. Female voicesseemed to be whis-pering in the shrub-bery. Bats wheeledoverhead and an owlscreeched.

This time thehouse was silentapart from the muf-

fled purr of Set MeFree. Eric rang thebell.

The door seemedto open by itself. Then she was uponhim like a wildcat. Atfirst he thought it wasa game until he sawher snarling mouthbeneath the mask andfelt her nails digginginto his neck.

There was no softkiss just a crazydance with painfulbiting. He struggledfree, disorientatedand afraid.

He fled awaythrough the shrub-bery, flinging hismask aside.

PETER COYNE.

um, Moira is second left

with servants beingallowed home to visittheir mothers, and even aspecial cake baked tomark the day.

An American woman,Anna Jarvis, campaignedfor a special day to hon-our mothers in memory ofher own mother’s goodworks in the community.Presidents Taft andRoosevelt supportedAnna’s campaign and in1914 President WoodrowWilson proclaimed thatMay 2nd was a nationalholiday - “Mother’s Day”.Sadly, the growing com-mercialisation ofMother’s Day was deeply

distressing to Anna, who admitted beforeher death in 1948that she regrettedstarting the tradition.

Mother’s Day con-tinues to flourisharound the globe,

albeit on differentdates. Here in Britainwe keep to theSpring time tradition, with florists and cardshops doing a roaringtrade and restaurantsfull as families show

their appreciation forthat person we alltake for granted therest of the year -good old mum!

Happy Mother’sDay from all at the

This game, playedat the request ofthe LiverpoolCounty FA attheir ground atWalton HallPark, provided acontrast betweenfast entertainingfootball, crisppassing and somewoeful defending.

Unfortunately forStoneycroft theirdefensive errors werepunished by a gleefulLiverpool North for-ward line who couldhardly believe theirluck.

The scoring com-menced within 7minutes of the kickoff. Although theystarted brightlyenough a loose ballfrom the Stoneycroftdefence was seizedon by the LiverpoolNorth midfield andthey were allowed toslot the ball throughand set free theexcellent Hartleywho lobbed the ballexpertly over theadvancing Donohueto put his side ahead.

The deficitprompted a livelyresponse from thehome side with wingback Williams show-ing his pace in fre-quent maraudingsdown the right flankand the Stoneycroftbench were incensedwhen the refereefailed to award apenalty whenWilliams was seem-ingly upended. Thegame then developedinto an end to endtussle with both sidescreating chances butfailing to convert.McGann was deniedby an excellent saveby the LiverpoolNorth keeper andwent close with twoother efforts. Hartleyon the other handcontinued to pose athreat. Just as the‘Croft were begin-ning to despair ofever finding the netKinney popped up toslot home from closerange to level thescore on 38 minutes.

Shortly after therestart the visitorsfound themselves

ahead once again.Indecisive defendingenabled the Northforwards to getbehind the Croftback four and a neatback heel by a Northforward put the ballinto the path of anunmarked colleaguewho put it into theempty net. Croft’smisery was com-pounded whenDonohue collected aball from Curriewhich the ref ruled asa back pass and theresultant free kickwas converted.

Debutant JohnMurphy, who hadbeen introduced toreplace the injuredKev Moss, addedanother dimension tothe Croft attack andwhen he was broughtdown in the areaMike Kinney dou-bled his accountfrom the spot. TheCroft were now driv-ing forward and therewas an air ofinevitability aboutthe equaliser when itcame, withCarruthers pokingthe ball home after agoalmouth scramble.

Most observersnow felt that theCroft would go on towin but were leftaghast when threeLiverpool Northattackers were leftunmarked for one ofthem to calmly headin at the far post froma corner with min-utes to go. The dramahad not finished, however, and theCroft camp werefurious in the closingseconds when whatlooked like a push inthe back in the Northarea was notpenalised and in thehail of protests thatfollowed Carrutherswas sent off for dis-sent.

With the sun shin-ing on beautifulwinter’s day thismuch postponed IZingari Cup tiefinally got under-way.

The game devel-

oped into hard foughtencounter with bothsides missinggoalscoring opportuni-ties. Stoneycroft start-ed the brighter andimpressed with someslick passing andmovement. One partic-

ular move involvedfive or six playersswitching the ballfrom one flank to theother ending in the ballbeing pulled wide byPeers after it had beenturned back from thegoal line. Murphy, onthe left flank and in hisfirst full start for theclub, was a constantthorn in the APH side.

Because of the fail-ure to take chances theteams went in level athalf-time. The restartsaw Eddie Baker onfor Flanagan who had

sustained an injury inthe first half. Not longinto the half two min-utes of defensive mad-ness struck the Croftagain in almost a car-bon copy of the previ-ous week when directfrom a corner the APHforward found himselfcompletely unmarkedand gratefully noddedhis side in front. Lessthan two minutes laterpoor marking from across saw APH doubletheir lead with an easyheader at the far post.

The visitors fought

back heroically andwere doing all theycould to get back inthe game but APHwere looking solid.Almost out of the bluethe Croft skipper,Finnegan, forced theball home after ascramble following acorner making for anexciting climax. Croftthrew the kitchen sinkat the home defencebut could not get anequaliser. McGannblasted a late free-kickover the bar the tie waslost and the Croft’s

exit from this cup wassealed. By a twist offate the two teams willmeet again in the nextround of the GeorgeMahon Cup andStoneycroft will behoping for better for-tune then.
