THIS WEEK: USF opens the 2010-11 Zappos.com West Coast Conference Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The Dons earned the eight seed into the tourna-ment and will face the fifth seed, Santa Clara, at Noon on Friday.

LAST OUTING: Katy Keating sunk five three’s and scored 17 points Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the University of San Francisco women’s basketball capped the 2010-11 regular season with an 87-60 loss to host Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. Keating headline a trio of Dons with double-digit scoring efforts.

LOOKING AHEAD: The winner of Friday’s contest between the Dons and Broncos will move on to face No. 4 seed Portland Saturday at the Orleans Arena.

WATCH THE DONS THIS WEEKEND: Friday’s and Saturday’s women’s game at the Zappos.com WCC Tournament will be aired live on ESPN3.com. The West Coast Conference announced today that the first two rounds of both the 2011 Zappos.com West Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will be produced and televised live by BYUtv on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5. In addition, all eight of these early round games will be simulcast on both ESPN3.com and/or ESPN Full Court. BYUtv is currently in 55 million homes nationwide in the basic tiers of DirecTV and Dish Network and approximately 500 other cable systems in the United States. BYUtv is also seen in over 140 countries across the globe. The early round championships coverage is in addition to ESPN’s continuing WCC Basketball Championships coverage of the men’s semifinals and final and women’s final on Sunday, March 6 and Monday, March 7.

KELLY JO MULLANEY EARNS ALL-WCC ACCOLADES: Senior guard Kelly Jo Mullaney, of the USF women’s basketball team, has earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention accolades, as announced by the conference office Tuesday. The league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team, voted on all of the annual honors. Mullaney transferred to the Hilltop for her senior season, after stints at Colorado and Colorado State. The native of Minneapolis, Minn. paced the Dons’ during conference play with 7.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. A 5-7 guard, Mullaney dished out 27 assists with 17 steals and three blocks. Mullaney posted four games during league play with 10-plus points, including a double-double performance in a win over Pepperdine. For the season, Mullaney averaged 9.3 points with 3.4 rebounds per outing. She also posted 49 assists, 32 assists and five blocks, while leading the squad with a .437 shooting percentage. On two occasions, the senior tallied 20-plus points. Mullaney’s honor marks the first of her career and the first All-WCC honor for the Dons under the guidance of first-year head coach Jennifer Azzi. The selection is the 18th honorable mention honor in program history. In total, the Dons have earned 48 All-WCC honors.

STAY UP TO DATE ON LAS VEGAS EVENTS: Just like last season, USF Athletics is proud to announce the second annual edition of Dons Daily. Dons Daily is a daily newletter for USF fans in Las Vegas, to stay abridged on all of the events surrounding the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Tournament. The newsletter will be avail-able each day that USF is still participating in the event, at the front desk of the Orleans Hotel. It will also be availble to view at www.USFDons.com. STILL GETTING IT RIGHT: USF has utilized 18 different starting line-ups this year. The 18 sets of five are the most starting line-ups used in Division I women’s basket-ball this season. Lafayette College has also used 17. The Dons have only used one line-up more than three different times. That line-up of Kelly Jo Mullaney, Rheina Ale, Vania Singleterry, Ashley Boggs and Whitney Daniels has been used six times. Only one line-up, Ale, Mullaney, Heidi Anton, Katy Keating and Bailey Barbour, is undefeated this season.

SCORING RUNS DEEP FOR DONS: San Francisco’s scoring threats run much deeper than the starting five this season. USF, consistently, on any day, has a scoring threat come off of the bench for the Dons. This season, USF has outscored its’ opponents benches by 205 points. The Dons’ bench has posted 742 points this season, accounting for 44 percent of the scoring for the Green and Gold this year. In the 28 games, a reserve for the Dons has scored 10-plus points on 18 occasions, including three games with two or more reserves and two games with three or more members of the bench scoring double-digits.

ALE GOES 10-FOR-10: Against Pepperdine (1/29), Rheina Ale went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The perfect showing from the stripe marked the 15th time in program history a Don has shot 1.000 from the stripe, with a minimum of eight attempts. Ale became the fourth member of USF history to be a perfect 10-for-10. The last time a Don went 10-for-10, or better, at the line was in 2003 when Carey Sauer went 10-for-10 against San Diego on March 7.

IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME: USF finished the season ranked second in the league for all games this season. This year, the Dons welcomed over 8,000 fans to War Memorial Gym this season, averaging 639 per game. Overall, USF averaged 1,183 fans at contests regardless of location. The attendance included over 3,440 fans that came to see San Francisco take on Stanford, December 22.

KUSF PROGRAMMING NOTE: KUSF, the official radio home of USF women’s basketball since the 1996-97 season is no longer transmitting on the FM dial at 90.3 and will be shifting to an online-only format, effective as of Tuesday, January 18, 2011. While USF women’s basketball loses its presence over the airwaves, all contests throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 season and beyond will be available online on the official website of USF Athletics, www.usfdons.com, courtesy of Yahoo Broadcast. USF Athletics and Dons Basketball greatly appreciates the longtime support by KUSF.

THREE’S COMPANY, ALMOST: The Dons put on a show from deep against Mount St. Mary’s on New Years Eve, draining a dozen 3-point baskets – eight of which came in the first half. The 12 baskets from beyond the arc fell one short of the single-game program record. The record of 13 baskets was set on Dec. 7, 2008 against Cal Poly. USF has hit 12 baskets on two previous occasions, Mar. 1, 2008 against Pepperdine and Dec. 1 against Massachusetts. Against The Mount, Kelly Jo Mullaney paced USF with five three’s and Katy Keating with four – all of which came in the first half.

PACK THE HOUSE VS. THE CARDINAL: Wednesday, Dec. 22, USF hosted No. 8/8 Stanford in the annual “Pack The House Challenge”. That night, WMG hosted 3,441 fans as the Dons fell to the Cardinal, handing head coach Tara VanDerveer her 800th win. The crowd marks a decade long program-high for the USF women’s program, while marking the third time in a dozen years USF women’s basketball has hosted a crowd of over 3,000 for a home game. Last season, USF faced Tennessee on the Hilltop as 3,255 watched on. In the 1999-2000 season opener, USF played Stanford at War Memorial Gym in front of 3,212.

OFFENSE HEATS UP: San Francisco and its opponents scored a combined 175 points in the games with Rhode Island and Sacramento State. That’s just 47 more points than what the Dons scored in the first four games of the season. USF put up 87 points against Rhode Island November 27 as part of the Holiday-Inn Express Midtown Tournament in Albuquerque, just to be bettered by 88 points December 1 at Sacramento State. The 88 points is the most points for USF since the Dons defeated Santa Clara 88-73, Feb. 23, 2008. The program record for points in a game is 105, 101 when playing on the road.

JENNIFER AZZI ERA: This season marks the beginning of a new era on the Hilltop, as women’s basketball legend Jennifer Azzi begins her appointment as head coach. Azzi, who was named to the helm of the program in April, brings an unprecedented wealth of basketball experience to the program. The 2009 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee played five seasons in the WNBA, was a founding member of the American Basketball League (ABL), played overseas and enjoyed an All-American collegiate career at Stanford. Internationally, Azzi was a member of the USA Basketball Senior National Team from 1990-91 and 1993-98. A key member of the United States gold medal-winning 1996 Olympic Team that concluded a perfect 60-0 season with an 8-0 record during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Azzi played on 13 USA National Teams, compiling a mark of 114-14. She also medaled three times at the World Championships, claiming gold in 1998 and 1990, while earning a bronze in 1994.

DENIED!: Dec. 29, against the Knights, USF recorded nine blocks. The nine blocks marks the highest single-game total for San Francisco since the Dons recorded 10 in a 72-52 win at Gonzaga, Jan. 11, 2001. Against Academy of Art, two blocks paced USF from both Donnisha Taylor and Katy Keating. Rheina Ale, Kelly Jo Mullaney, Vania Singleterry, Bailey Barbour and Whitney Daniels each added one. So far this season, Barbour, who has posted 22 blocks, paces USF’s block brigade. Last season, no member of the USF roster recorded more than 11 blocks, while in 2008-09, Katy Keating posted 14. Barbour leads the Dons this season with 29 blocks, averaging 1.2 blocks per game. Barbour is the first Don to post more than 20 blocks in a season since Lisa Olden posted 28 during the 2007-08 season.

(San Francisco) - The University of San Francisco women’s basketball team opened the 2011 West Coast Conference season Saturday, dropping a 69-50 decision to visiting Santa Clara at War Memorial Gym.

San Francisco (3-12 overall, 0-1 WCC) struggled in the first half as Santa Clara (5-10 overall, 1-0 WCC) held the Dons scoreless for nearly five minutes. Down by just two, 15-13, the Broncos opened a 7-0 run to go up by nine, 22-13 at 9:35. Santa Clara would go up by as many as 11 in the first half, taking a 36-25 lead with 1:36 left, but two free throws by Mel Khlok down the stretch brought the Dons within nine, 36-27 at the half.

The Dons’ defense was out labored down low in the opening 20 minutes, allowing 16 points in the paint. On the flip side, San Francisco managed just two points in the paint, missing six lay-ups in the half. Santa Clara finished the game with 32 points in the paint, while USF tallied 10.

Santa Clara took control after halftime, going up by as many as 20 midway through the half. USF rallied to come within 10, holding the Broncos scoreless for over six minutes, but were unable to over come the double-digit deficit down the stretch.

Kelly Jo Mullaney paced the USF scoring efforts with 10 points. The game marked the fifth straight game that the senior has led the Dons in scoring and the fourth consecutive contest with 10-plus points.

Bailey Barbur added nine for the Dons, while Rheina Ale posted eight points.Mullaney also led the defensive efforts, falling one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards. The native of Minneapolis also dished out two assists while grabbing two steals.

Lena Gipson’s 17 points paced the Broncos. Gipson, who averages a double-double, added seven rebounds.

DONS NIP AT BRONCOS’ HEELS BUT FALL SHORT

(Santa Clara, Calif.) - The University of San Francisco women’s basketball team mounted a strong comeback Saturday afternoon, but in the end it wasn’t enough as the Dons dropped a tight 70-62 decision to Santa Clara at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara. Down by 16 midway through the second half, USF pulled within four in the final minutes.

San Francisco (4-18 overall, 1-7 West Coast Conference) leaned mainly on a strong bench performance, which include three double-digit performances from reserves. In total, the Dons’ bench accounted for 41 points.

In the end, poor free throw shooting proved to be the costly difference between the Dons and Broncos (8-14 overall, 4-4 WCC). USF shot just 33.3 percent from the charity stripe in the first half, improving to 71.4 percent in the second, but finished the contest going 12-for-20 from the line.

Down by 16 at 12:02 in the second half, USF went on a monster 12-0 run over the next five minutes to pull within four. Donnisha Taylor played a major role in the run, scoring nine of the dozen points.

San Francisco continued to threat throughout the remainder of the game but Santa Clara remained on step ahead, capitalizing on 11-of-13 free throws over the final minutes of the game. SCU hit its last field goal of the contest with 3:50 remaining.

USF improved it’s ball handling from recent outings, committing just six turnovers and forcing 13. San Francisco scored 14 points off of SCU’s miscues.
