Road Widening, Passing Lane Additions Highlight Projectmilepost 7.83 to 14.47, is the last of the five segments to becompleted. Work on Rosie’s Ridge began in May 2011 andwill be finished by July 2013.This scenic stretch of roadway in Teton County lies

between the cities of Dubois and Jackson. On either side, thehighway is surrounded by forests — the Teton NationalForest to the north, and the Gros Ventre Wilderness to thesouth. Yellowstone National Park is located about 28 mi.(45.1 km) northwest of the project.Oftedal Construction Inc. is heading up the project out of

its Casper, Wy., office. The work includes road widening, construction of additional passing lanes and parking areas, abridge replacement and the construction of an arch culvert.Oftedal specializes in highway and road construction, site

preparation, mine reclamation, and dam and dike construc-tion. The company was founded in 1964 by E.H. (“Ed”)Oftedal and his son, Bill, in Miles City, Mont. It now servesmultiple states and employs more than 250 people.Oftedal and a crew of about 100 employees are perform-

ing excavation and slide stabilizations. The crew has beenstaying in the Dubois area since the start of the job, boostingthe local economy.“This segment of the project requires four major slide

remediations,” explained Kaia Tharp, WYDOT project engi-neer. “A large portion of the project was dedicated to theslide areas, and because of the challenge that they pose,WYDOT chose this section to be completed last.”A total of 1,014,170 cu. yds. (775,434.4 cu m) of earth

was excavated. All excess material is being moved onto twotoe berms in conjunction with the slide remediations, alongwith 95,200 cu. yds. (72,790 cu m) of graded 1 to 6 in. rock. The Black Rock Creek Bridge, a two-lane, 138-ft. (42.1

m) structure was replaced under subcontractor CannonBuilders Inc. of Blackfoot, Idaho. Cannon also replaced a24-in. (61 cm) pipe with a 42 by 23-ft. (12.8 by 7 m) archculvert to accommodate the crossing of large local wildlife, including elk, moose, bears and deer in this wilderness area. The project calls for 296 cu. yds. (226.3 cu m) of concrete,

and 42,000 tons (38,094 t) of asphalt.

Additionally, WYDOT worked with The Army Corps ofEngineers for the replacement of 2.19 acres of wetlands thatare part of the construction area.HK Contractors Inc. of Idaho Falls, Idaho, is in charge of

paving the roadway, including the new passing lanes andparking areas. The passing lanes have been placed intermit-tently along the 6 mi. to relieve traffic congestion. To make way for the road widening, Wilcox Logging Inc.,

based in Rexburg, Idaho, was hired to cut trees along U.S.26/287. Traffic control is in the hands of S&L Industrial ofCowly, Wyo.U.S. 26/287 also is the home to a section of the

TransAmerica Trail, a well-known bike trail stretching 4,254mi. from Astoria, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. The TransAmericaTrail was established for Adventure Cycling’s celebration ofthe U.S. bicentennial in 1976. At that time, the organizationwas called Bikecentennial, a name many old-timers stillassociate with the TransAm Trail. To accommodate the bike trail, 8-ft. (2.4 m) shoulders are

being installed along Rosie’s Ridge. (www.adventurecy-cling.org)

Geo-Boy Brush Cutter Excelsin Variety of Conditions

Breaker Technology (BTI) DebutsHydraulic Breaker ‘Powerhouse’

The BXR150 at 15,000 ft.-lbs., isdesigned for rugged, continuous duty for usein demanding breaking applications. It offersan extra long stroke design, which improvesthe power-to-weight ratio of the breaker, pro-viding a wide carrier range (120,000 to220,000 lbs. [54,431 to 99,790 kg]) andpower available. Precise tolerances betweenthe piston and cylinder provide high effi-ciency, blow rate and power, according tothe manufacturer.

Large cross section upper and lowershock absorbing isolators reduce vibrationfeedback to the carrier. BTI’s front headrestraint system tightly guides the front headwithin the housing, reducing loading to the

tie rods and the upper portion of the breaker.A narrow box housing design is well suitedto tight trenching conditions.

The BXR150 has a working weight of12,000 lbs. (5,443 kg), which may varydepending on bracket. Tool diameter is 8 in.(20 cm), flow range is 85 to 120 gpm (321 to454 L) and operating pressure is 2,030 to2,755 psi.

The frequency range is 260 to 425 bpm inlong stroke mode (high impact), 340 to 530in short stroke mode (high frequency) —manually controlled via hydraulic pilotedstroke control.

Case Donates Skid Steer toNorthwest Iowa College

Case Construction Equipment recentlydonated a cutaway training model of a Caseskid steer loader to the heavy equipmentoperation and maintenance program atNorthwest Iowa Community College inSheldon, Iowa.Roger Solberg, heavy equipment opera-

tions and maintenance instructor at NWICC,said the program’s 25 students will beginusing the machine during the upcomingsemester’s studies, including breaking down,re-assembling and re-installing the engine. “We’ll have a new shop next year, and

we’re setting up a special area just for theCase machine,” Solberg said. Case had been using the machine for

training at its Tomahawk Customer Center inTomahawk, Wis. Solberg arranged the dona-tion during a three-day visit with his studentsto the Tomahawk facility earlier this year. “We appreciate the support Case provides

to our program. We’re especially grateful toRuss Wadzinski, the general manager atTomahawk, who offered us the skid steercutaway. Russ and his team gave us goodadvice and ideas to incorporate into our facil-ities and classes. Case provides a greatexample to our students of how the industrycan help prepare the next generation ofequipment operators and mechanics,”Solberg said. The Case skid steer is the latest addition to

the 30-piece equipment fleet used in the

NWICC heavy equipment program.Solberg, who has directed the program for12 years, said students learn to operate andmaintain construction, agricultural and on-highway equipment, and each graduate ofthe 18-month program also passes the com-mercial driver’s license test.“We have a strong record of placing our

graduates with big contractors, dealershipsand companies with large truck fleets,”Solberg said. “It’s one of the most compre-hensive programs available, and we drawstudents from all over the country, not justIowa.” Solberg, himself a graduate of the NICC

heavy equipment program, also creditedDean Shaw of Titan Machinery, Sioux City,Iowa, for nurturing the relationship betweenNICC and Case. Titan is a Case dealer withlocations in seven midwest and plains states. “We’re happy to do whatever we can to

help the NICC program,” Shaw said. “Rogerand his staff are helping keep the industry ontrack for the future.”Wadzinski also commented on the impor-

tance of supporting technical training pro-grams such as NICC’s. “It’s important to help develop young

mechanics and operators. The graduates ofthese programs may someday work for Caseor our customers,” he said. For more information, call 866/54CASE6

Gilbane Building Company has published the Winter2011 edition of Construction Economics — MarketConditions in Construction. Based on an array of economicdata, construction starts and material cost trends, this freereport projects that the recovery of the construction marketwill lag behind the overall economic recovery and will takemuch longer due to the severity of current conditions.Nevertheless, some critical indicators are illustrating a posi-tive trend.“New construction starts have been strong four of the last

five months, construction spending has improved through-out the year and industrial production related to constructionmaterials is up five months in a row,” said Ed Zarenski, thereport’s author and a 40-year veteran of the constructionindustry. “However, we haven’t seen appreciable job growthin six years. In 2011, construction increased by only 50,000jobs when we need to see job growth of 30,000 per monthto get back to previous levels, which will require significantincreases in construction spending and overall project vol-ume.”Commenting on the necessity for a realistic assessment of

the state of the industry, William Gilbane Jr., president andchief operating officer of Gilbane Building Company said,

“Making good decisions in the construction industryrequires the best possible information, especially when fac-ing such a wide range of economic challenges.Construction Economics offers a detailed look at the key

market drivers that are influencing our industry. Whetheryou are a facility owner, a general contractor, a constructionmanagement firm or an industry observer, understandingthese factors is critical to everyone’s success in an increas-ingly challenging but exciting industry. We drew on not onlythe most current market data available but also on our under-standing of and experience within the construction industrygained during our almost 140-year history.”Among the topics covered in this comprehensive report

are:• Construction Starts, Spending, and Costs• Material Price Movement• Trends and Costs for Structural Steel, Recycling Steel

and Copper• Architectural Billings Index• Current Inflation Forecast• ENR Index — BCI HistoryFor more information, visit www.gilbaneco.com/con-

$570M Crosstown Expressway ProjectWill Handle 173,000 Vehicles Per Dayclimate for trade, business growth andjob creation.” Eastbound traffic was diverted onto

the new stretch of highway shortly afternoon Jan. 5. Westbound traffic contin-ued on the old I-40 bridge about fiveblocks to the north. At 2 mi. (3.2 km) long, the old I-

40 crosstown is the longest bridge inthe state. Built in 1966 to accommo-date about 76,000 vehicles each day,it currently carries as many as125,000 vehicles each day and hasbeen crumbling for years. A crackwas discovered in one of its pierbeams in 1989, prompting closure ofthe major thoroughfare for emer-gency construction. “Our biggest headache has been the

bridge deck,” said David Streb, theOklahoma Department ofTransportation’s director of engineer-ing. “More than half the bridge is patch. The deck is just in shambles.” The new crosstown is designed to

carry 173,000 vehicles each day,

ODOT officials said. Constructionbegan on the project in 2005. Steel beams between 50 and 80 ft.

(15 to 24 m) long that were used in theold I-40 bridge will be inspected afterthey are removed and made available

for counties to use in bridge construc-tion, Streb said. Approximately $570 million has

been spent so far on the new crosstown, which opened more than six monthsahead of schedule. More than $100million will be spent tearing down theold I-40 bridge and constructing a new

boulevard in its place. “We’re very fortunate to be able to

design a brand-new street to go rightthrough the heart of downtown, and weintend to make the most of it,” saidOklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett.“We intend to make it the grandeststreet this generation has ever seen.” A new convention center and city

park — both part of a 10-year con-struction project approved byOklahoma City voters in 2009 —will be built along the boulevard. Cornett also touted the Skydance

Pedestrian Bridge over the newcrosstown, an iconic structure withtwo massive steel “wings” on oneside designed in the shape of thestate bird — the scissortail flycatch-

er. “I’ve traveled I-40 as much as any-

one, and I think this is going to be themost iconic structure along Interstate40, coast to coast,” Cornett said.“People are going to remember theywere in Oklahoma City when they seethat beautiful art.”

Raptor XL300 and XL400 cone crushers byFLSmidth Pekin LLC are designed not only tomeet producers’ stationary crushing needs, butalso are fully engineered to enter the portableplant markets, according to the manufacturer.

Working with preferred chassis and screenmanufacturers, FLSmidth’s engineers can cus-tom-design a portable wheel-mounted plant, based on customers’ unique applications.FLSmidth builds rear-discharge XL300 andXL400 wheeled plant models as stock avail-able for immediate purchase.

Wheel-mounted plant options include reardischarge and rear feed-side discharge for boththe XL300 and XL400. When combined witha horizontal 6 by 20-ft. (1.8 by 6 m) two- orthree-deck screen, the XL300 can be config-ured into a closed-circuit crushing and screen-ing plant.

The XL300 and XL400 cone crushers canboth be configured with two- or three-deckhorizontal screens that are 6, 7 or 8 ft. by 20 ft.(1.8, 2 or 2.4 m by 6 m), to provide open-cir-cuit crushing and screening plants. Hydraulicrun-on jacks also are available as an option toquickly level the plant into operating positionafter pulling onsite. This option eliminates thetime consumption and safety issues created by

leveling plants with cribbing timbers, accord-ing to the manufacturer.

The XL300 and XL400 cone crushers fea-ture a high pivot point and large crushingstroke that offers crushing action throughoutthe crushing chamber. An active feed openingcreates better end product shape for high pro-duction of salable material. The crusher linealso employs “fail safe” hydraulics through aninternal relief valve within the dual-actingtramp release cylinders, which ensures themachines stay protected from mechanicaloverload should an accumulator bladder fail.

Advanced overload sensing technologydetects crushing force overload. A simplealarm is activated, or the system can be auto-mated to take corrective action. This sameadvanced automation system can be used tooptimize crusher performance, feed control, setting adjustment and monitoring of all criti-cal lubrication and hydraulic parameters.

An additional safety feature standard on allRaptor models is the counterclockwise rota-tion crushing action that protects the machineif adjustment ring movement is excessive or ifthe ring gear brake fails.

For more information, call 801/871-7000 orvisit www.FLSmidth.com/Raptor.

The XL300 and XL400 cone crush-ers can both be configured withtwo- or three-deck horizontalscreens that are 6, 7 or 8 ft. by 20 ft. (1.8, 2 or 2.4 m by 6 m), toprovide open-circuit crushingand screening plants.

Komatsu America Launches HM400-3 Articulated Truck

Komatsu America Corp.’s HM400-3articulated truck is powered by a KomatsuSAA6D140E-6 engine with a net horsepow-er of 469 hp (350 kW) and is EPA Tier IVInterim and EU Stage 3B emissions certi-fied. Komatsu leveraged its leadership in tech-

nology and innovation — building on itsTier III engine platform — to design a moreenvironmentally friendly engine thatincreases power while decreasing fuel con-sumption, according to the manufacturer. With the introduction of the Komatsu

CARE Program, every Komatsu Tier IVInterim construction machine comes stan-dard with complimentary factory scheduledmaintenance for 2,000 hours or the first threeyears (whichever occurs first), and includestwo complimentary Komatsu diesel particu-late filter (KDPF) exchanges within the firstfive years. The Komatsu CARE programcovers all new Komatsu Tier IV Interimequipment, whether rented, leased or pur-

chased.The HM400-3 features a maximum gross

vehicle weight (GVW) of 162,569 lbs.(73,740 kg), hauling up to a 44.1 ton (40 t)payload at its maximum ground speed of34.7 mph (55.9 kph). Improved operatingperformance, lower fuel consumption, improved operator comfort and enhancedserviceability are features of the HM400-3that provide increased productivity andlower operating costs. The HM400-3 is equipped with the latest

KOMTRAX technology, which sendsmachine operating information to a secureWeb site utilizing wireless technology. Datasuch as daily fuel consumption, machine uti-lization, operating hours, location, cautionsand maintenance alerts are relayed to theweb application for analysis. The KOM-TRAX fleet monitoring system increasesmachine availability, reduces the risk ofmachine theft, allows for remote diagnosisby the distributor, and provides a wealth of

other information to drive business efficien-cy and productivity.

EPA Tier IV Interim and EU Stage3B Emissions Certified EngineBuilt upon Tier III technology, the

SAA6D140E-6 engine provides increasedhorsepower while lowering fuel consump-tion. The Komatsu Tier IV Interim engineuses an advanced electronic control systemto manage airflow rate, fuel injection, com-bustion parameters and after-treatment func-tions to enhance performance, reduce emis-sions and provide advanced diagnostic capa-bility.Komatsu also has developed a hydrauli-

cally actuated variable geometry turbocharg-er (KVGT) and exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) valve, resulting in better precisionand air management as well as longer com-ponent life. The KDPF filter and regenera-tion system are integrated so as to not inter-fere with daily operation but keep the opera-

tor aware of its status.

Improved OperationThe HM400-3 features the new Komatsu

traction control system (K-TCS). The K-TCS system automatically provides opti-mum traction when operating in soft groundconditions. As ground conditions worsen, speed sensors located on four wheels detecttire slippage and automatic application of theinter-axle differential lock occurs. If tire slip-page continues to be detected, four inde-pendent brakes can be applied to slippingwheels to regain traction. The HM400-3 is enhanced with Komatsu

advanced transmission with optimum modu-lation control system (K-ATOMiCS). K-ATOMiCS offers a six-speed, fully automat-ic transmission that uses an advanced elec-tronic system to eliminate shift shock andtorque cutoff to aid operator in operating the

engine in the most efficient range. Theelectronic system automatically selectsthe gear based on vehicle speed, enginespeed and the shift position selected, resulting in powerful acceleration, smooth down shifting and synchro-nized engine speed when climbingslopes. K-ATOMiCS works to mini-mize operator fatigue and load spillagefrom the body, thus increasing produc-tivity.

A large automatic retarder allows theoperator to select the optimum operat-ing speed on downhill travel and fullyloaded hauls, thus eliminating effectsby inertial acceleration.

Increased PayloadsThrough body design optimization

the HM400-3 features increased bodycapacity and payload. The low 10 ft. 5in. (3.2 m) loading height easily match-es with 40 to 60 ton (36 to 54 t)hydraulic excavators or 5.5 to 7.5 cu.yd. (4.2 to 5.7 cu m) wheel loaders. Inaddition, the two single-staged body liftcylinders provide a 70-degree dumpangle.

Enhanced Operator Environment

The new cab design provides a morecomfortable and quieter work environ-ment. The ROPS/FOPS Level 2 certi-fied cab features a newly designedrounded front dash panel with easy-to-reach switches. The dashboard hasbeen redesigned and the high back, heated air ride seat with three-point seatbelt has been relocated to improve vis-ibility. An auxiliary input also has beenadded to connect an MP3 player orother device along with two 12-voltports that have been incorporated intothe cab.

A new high resolution 7 in. LCDmonitor features enhanced capabilitiesand displays information in 25 lan-guages for global support. Using themonitor, the operator can easily modifysettings for items such as the auto idleshutdown or the auto-reversing fan;check operational records, such as driv-ing history or fuel consumption; moni-tor the KDPF or check for when thenext maintenance interval is required.

The monitor also offers the operatorthe option of using the ECO guidancefunction, which provides operational

tips to reduce fuel consumption. A rearview monitor system with a separate 7in. LCD monitor is standard with everymachine and is mounted on the righthand side of the console for operatorconvenience.

Maintenance and Serviceability

To reduce costly downtime, theHM400-3 provides easy service access. The new model features a newlydesigned engine hood for easy accessand two standard hydraulically drivenauto-reversing fans to help keep theradiator and charge air cooler clean.

The truck is equipped with theKomatsu equipment managementmonitoring system (EMMS) that hasenhanced diagnostic features that givethe operator and technicians greatermonitoring and troubleshooting capa-bilities. EMMS continually monitorsall critical systems, preventive mainte-nance schedule, and provides trou-bleshooting assistance to minimizediagnosis and repair time.
