The schoolhouse has long been

the factory of the future. It's been

the place where businessmen, firefighters,

actors, engineers and even politicians

have been molded and shaped at their

earliest stages. Teachers push

button~turnknobsandlowerand

raise levers all with only one purpose:

to prepare a bunch of teenagers who

are eager to swallow the world to be a

part of it. WHS prides itself in having

state-of-the-art, class A teachers, who

love what they do, working for its

kids.

e Rainbow Another year has flown by. We now look

back through our yearbook, at the times

that we have shared together and the

memories we wi 11 remember forever.

Whether you're a freshman or a senior, you

wi 11 never forget this year. Freshman

remember hanging out in the cafeteria eating

lunch with all their new friends talking about

everything at once."

My best memory of my freshman year;

was hanging out with allmy new friends,"

freshman Lemma Salazar said

Sophomores remember studying fortheit

fmal exams dw-ing lunchbreaks,and hanging

out at the social events. "This year I went to

all the football games, and had a lot more

fun than I did

Seni r Skit Raises Issues

At the Red kin vs. P thers spirited and loud pep rally, a v ry int r ting skit was directed toward tl1 semors, but many teachers, student , and administrators took issue to this skit and were deeply affected by its meaning.

A very tangible argument started after Mr. Robb Peter on e-mailed the WHS staff. The e-mail stated. "Thoughts for the day-Charlotte's death in the skit was worth 10 seconds of silence, while every bar and party mentioned was worth loud cheers and applause," said Peterson. Educators flooded the e-mail systems wtth thoughts and _hUons of their own.

English teacher Mrs. ilbaugb sided with Mr. Peterson, "I strongly agree with you Robb. I am D so naive to think the students are ana , but where do they get the idea that ublic forum like a pep assembly i the place to celebrate their extracurricular acti vities," said Mrs. Silbaugh.

Not only did the teachers think the skit was inappropriate, but some students thought so as well. "I expected more from the kit, the juniors made it more about

I drinking and partying than taking the time to help us remember the times that didn't include illegal drinking," said senior Diana Castillo.

Not only were some offended, but

thankful that the j uniors took the time to shine light on the events throughout the past. " I ap reciated the skit because it made us laugh, cry, and it showed b().'W well we got to know the underclassmen, and the way they look up to us," said senior Bi Solis.

The senior sk it is meant to emphasize the hard times they had and all the not so hard times that the liv th ughout their schoo' y . t was an awesome performance b cause the memories they brought up reall y touched me and made me remember all the times thro ughout high school," said senior Domin ic De Leon.

There were many other seniors who thought that over a ll the kit was great and had no problem with the way it was presented to them. " I thought that overall the skit was okay, I admit it had high and low points, but J couldn't say 1 didn't like it becausc I enjoyed it very mu " said senior Linda Alvarado.

many thought it was disrespectful. "I .'·"'~"""'i"-

thought the skit was disrespectful because the skit contained mainly bar hopping, clubbing, drinking and dirty danein,. They had so much time to show us their out of school activities, but yet they only pent a couple of minute to show the los of Charlotte," said enior Erika Perez.

Which brings many of us to question, have we tudents failed to live up to our expectations and roles in life?

Many students believe not because after all, every conflict holds two oppo ing sides and many of which belonged to students who saw nothing wrong or shameful with the senior skit. "I enjoyed the skit because the whole aspect of it was relatively clo e to the events that happened to us throughout high school," said senior Becky Flores, Many students saw this skit as a nice gesture, and were

have gtven up on any "P~,CI''''''' and chosen not to care about being the assets to our society. while others see nothing wrong, or feel inditferent. It's interesting to juxta pose this story with mail sent by Mrs. Jeanne Cleckler, which included the following quote by a Greek poet in the 8th century before Christ. "I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise and impatient of restraint. "

As the year began , our days were

filled with wonder and amazement . High

School would be the beginning of a new

chapter in our lives . Being fresh out

of Middle School , the opportunities and

options that we have are endless . It was

a drastic change and nothing prepared us

for the changes that we went through

here in high school . " I remember my

fist day , and I can ' t believe how

different things were in comparison to

my years in Middle school ," Jacob

Arroyo , Freshmen said .

Surviving our first year here has

been our greatest achievement so far ,

and now we look forward , proudly , to the

future that lays before us here at WHS .

" I am looking forward to one day being a

senior here , but I will never forget my

freshman year ," Freddy Azoca , Freshmen

said .

After surviving our second year

here at Weslaco High School, we now

look forward to receiving our long

awaited title of "Upper Classmen".

This coming year, we will have the

honor and privilege to initiate the

incoming freshmen. "I have always

seen sophomores as the next link of

the chain," Ashley Wipf, Sophomore

said.

As we progress to the next

level, we will always remember we

were once under classmen, and try to

be good role models for the younger

generations just as we once had. "I

really loved my sophomore year, and I

can't wait to be an upper classmen,

but I will miss my senior friends a

lot, it won't be the same without

them," Cody Russell, Sophomore said.

D [] I t SPOliS are seen by many as an opportunity

to excel and experience different levels of

competition. Not only are we doing the things we

love, but it also helps us stay in shape, and out of

trouble. Our coaches are always there to push us

into getting good grades and go over and beyond

of what is expected from us. Athletic activities are

a great way to meet new people and to make

lifelong friends.

"Cheerleading requires a vigorous work out

and we get as many injuries as football or basket

ball players, who ever says cheerleading is not a

sport obviously doesn't know what they are

talking about," said Erica Cavazos, varsity senior

cheerleader. Of cour e there is more to sports than

winning, or injuries. Our athletes know that good

sportsmanship is what really counts. "Even though

we might not always win, it's being able to

compete that really counts," said Brenda Reyna,

semor.

"I sta'1 in on m'1 Frida'1 ni9hts beGause I have to rest for the traGK meets, so I reall'1 have to saGrifiGe a lot of m'1 free time. Aside from havin9 to 9ive up her o\Oln leisure time for meets and praGtiGes, there is one thin9 that drives C.uellar to Gontinue.

This '1ear the traGK team has had to 90 throu9h ri9orous and Ghallen9in9 praGtiGes b'1 pushin9 themselves to the pinnade of their Gapabilit'1 ' Albert I4>jas, another one of our sUGGessful freshmen runners, GOuld be seen praGtiGin9 endlessl'1 after SGhool. I had to 90 throu9h man'1 obstades and frustrations to get to the runnin9 level I'm at no\Ol, but that's \OIhen '10u realiz.e that traGK onl'1 helps '1ou," I4>jas said.

Th WHS Wr stling team has once again earned the title "District Champions" for th fourth consecutive year. This six y ar old program has proven to be best in th "Valley". This year the program has omething that is fa irly new to the school and th valley. In its se ond year, girls wr sUing has b come part of Coach Glapa's wrestling program.

Panth I' Wrestling is one of the hardest and toughest ports to compete in.

" I think you need tough kids who are extremely ompetitive, dedicated to the sport of wre tling and who are wil ling to make sa rifice for the good of the team, and you must be dis iplined to work hard not on ly on th wrestling mat, but also in the cia sroom," sa id Coach Glapa.

Th I' are many WI' ti l's on th team who stand out from th t am, and truly fit Glapa' description of a wrestler. One of th m is wrestler David Hernandez, who has 10 pins this y ar.

"Wrestling is an ex tr m Iy tough port. You have to be able to give it all

you got day in and day ou t. There is no in b twe n o therwi e you' ll g t beat", said H rnandez.

The eniors this year in lude: Victor Olvera, David Hernand z, Mo s

havez, Lionel Lucio, Benton England, je se ru z, hris Torres, Dina Villar al and Janin Misensky. They can proudly say that they won four di trict hampionships.

" I will certainly miss them I nior wrestle rsl, not only are they good wrestl rs, but they are good kids with great chara tel'," said Glapa. " I ju t hope that the I ssons of hard work, d di alion,

desir , teamwork, di ipline, and sacrifi e will hopefully h Ip mold th minto becoming produ tive itizens in today's society."

Coach Glapa, the wrestlers, and the school anli ipate having a successful eason, and exp ct th tradition and the

success th y've had in the past four years to continue making th m su cessfu l in th future.

" I feel that next year, they will be able to continu th legacy. They have w hat it takes to b hampions," said Victor

Olvera. We I ave off with the philosophy

of Coach Glapa and th Panther wrestlers, "When you fail to pI' pare, you prepare for

failure."

Moi es Chavez, Victor Olvera, Lionel Lucio, David Hernandez, Jesse ruz, and Benton England

Nothing butth be t i expected during such an important match. Of course the panther wr tiers perform wonderfully in every match they participate in.

Moi es Chav z is an xcellent wrestler and athelete. Hi hard work definitely shows during th tournaments.

Giving back to the environment i one thing that JROTC showed to believe very strongly in. Thi year the member of JROTC along with their group leaders got together and volunteered their pare tim to create a beach clean up day.

Early Saturday morning, JROTC member tumbled out of bed d dicated to cleaning up South Padre Island. Although many found it tough to give up their Saturday morning they knew that what they were doing wa the right thing. "Giving up a day off of school to where I could have be n resting instead of cleaning was tough and r wasn't too happy about it, but I knew it was no longer a choice, but the only right thing to do, plus the up ide of it wa that I had fun making a lot of

new friends," said Jessica Rodriguez a Sf'd year member of JROTC.

Cleaning may have been fun for Jes ica and other members yet some agree that there were hard points to the day. "Cleaning up the beach was somewhat annoying at point becau e of all the walking we had to do. ~I here was more tra h to clean than you'd think and I had to give up pending a traditional morning with my family," said Heather Humphrey a first year to JROTC.

After the fun and the hard work JROTC accomplished their goal and helped clean the beach.

And The Beat Goes On ... Written By: Monica Sifuentes

The Panther Corp continues to prove that they are the best with 25 consecutive ones under their bell. The band members put in a great deal of hours into perfecting their half time show, but half time is only the be8inning for these dedicated musicians. As summer winded down the students prepared themselves for the lon8 haul ahead. "For three long months we prepared for Pigskin. From August to October, we practiced long hours after school in the heat and worked hard to be perfect for seven and a half minutes," senior and head Drum Majo/~ Lily Rios said.

The Corp's daily routine was compiled up of drills that extended from morning to late evening. It consisted of 600 hours at school practicing and an additional 350 hours of independent practice the WPC was unstoppable, and the unity that seeped from them was uncanny. Headband director, Mrs. Donalson, witnessed the Corp in just one of their many finest hours as they

rallied together and formed the letters, WPC in the Donna stands as they awaited their rating. "At Pre-Pigskin watching all of you transform into a team before my eyes was beyond words," Donalson said.

The band has been recognized Valley wide and is well known for its continuous success. Aside from committing themselves entirely to producing straight ones year after year, the members have each gained something more than a plaque from this one to four year experience that will last what can only be described as a lifetime of memories. "Being in band has definitely made me more responsible and knowledgeable about how hard and how rewarding it can be to lead a group of individuals to a goal. Dedication is an important factor if you want to excel, and by being a member of the Panther Corp, I have acquired it and now push myself to do my best in all that I do," senior and Tuba Office/~ Adriana Manciallas said.

For senior baritone player, joey Alaniz, the show that hi8hlighted his and many of the other band member's

marching careers was Zorro. It was the last show that was performed by the one and only Panther Corp before the splitting of the schools. "When we performed Zorro my sophomore year there was so much intensity and pride poured into the performance that it became a legend in the hearts of all those who performed that night. "

When a group of individuals can come together and produce something as memorable as a halftime show, the markings that are left behind are glimpses into a winning family. They work together, push each other until the last waking moment, and stand beside each other through the good and bad times from the splitting of schools to area competition they are and still remain untouchable.

'For CLaat This year has been a memory within a dream; from our pep

rallies to graduation. The days we have spent being one class, is

something we will never forget. As our senior year began, I could

only imagine what was in store for us.

Senior year is suppose to be the best year; after going

through two different high schools, and the splitting of our classes; we

the class of2004 fmally made it. "It is not only about graduation and

getting out of here it is about moving on and taking a step towards

new horizons,"Juan de Leon, senior said.

We have enjoyed the time we spent together, even though at

our pep rallies we not only cheered on the mighty panthers; but

proudly cheered our senior class in a friendly rivalry. It doesn't

matter because we are all still friends where it counts, on the inside.

"I have learned that life can be hard sometimes, but it is up to you to

make it work. This is when we realize that we are becoming adults,

and we need to be ready to face a whole new world on our own,"

Amanda Arevalo, Senior said.

The wind from one door closing opens the door to a million

possibilities. Graduation is not the end it is only the beginning to our

dreams. So class of2004, keep your dreams alive.
