THE DIGITAL WORKSHOP –

INNOVATIVE 3D LEARNING TOOLS

The Digital Workshop developed by SMS - utilizedsince 2006 for hundreds of customers - uses modernIT solutions such as virtual reality to support interdis-ciplinary communication and cooperation with you.

It applies innovative virtual engineering and powerful3D visualization in a specially equipped projectionroom to create vivid digital models of plants, compo-nents, or production processes in real time.

Just two examples of virtual reality in TECademyseminars are simulations that allow us to “walkthrough” plants in real time, and a virtual plant portal that simulates entire process chains includingdynamic demonstrations of production processes.

A PICTURE SAYS MORE

THAN A THOUSAND WORDS

Visualization is a great way to help course partici-pants gain a true-to-life picture and a profound under-standing of plants and processes.

As a result, we guarantee sustained learning successbecause a picture says more than a thousand words. And the “Digital Workshop” is worth a thousand pic-tures.

So you don’t need to suspend operation just toexamine your plant closely, try out modifications ofcertain production steps, or run through maintenancemethods. All this is possible using 3D models in ourDigital Workshop. That makes the facility ideal fortraining employees. Production continues undisrupt-ed, guaranteeing an optimal value adding process.

We use our Digital Workshop for courses in all threeof our TECademy Specialist fields:

TECHNOLOGY

Focusing on complete plants, production sequences, and production processes

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING

Focusing on components that require maintenance

PLANT TECHNOLOGY

Focusing on integration tests of the entire processautomation

CUSTOMIZED COURSES

7

Different plants and processes require specific know-how. This can vary widely from company tocompany. That’s why we respond to your needs flexibly, identifying the potentials of your own particular plants so you can use them optimally.

SMS Siemag draws on long years of experience as a leading player in the metallurgy and rolling millindustry as well as extensive knowledge about theplants and the entire process chains involved. Thatgives us the necessary flexibility and expertise todesign customized training programs.

FLEXIBLE PLANNING

AND OPTIMAL ADAPTATION

Simply ask us and we will get together with you todraw up training schemes tailored to your require-ments and learning goals. Then we devise contentsand learning sequences, adapting them to your wish-es. Our experienced trainers ensure optimal learningsuccess and maximal applicability by conveying prac-tical know-how integrated in the learning units.

On request, we conduct these seminars on-site atyour facility, working directly on your plant.

Customized training courses – worldwide.

Our wide-ranging program for 2014 covers seminarson the following subject fields:

TECHNOLOGY

This is about giving youremployees an in-depth under-

standing of the connectionsbetween the different stages from steelmakingthrough to processed strip for a truly holistic perspective. You profit because your staff will benewly qualified to identify existing potentials and to develop plans for more efficient use of this extrascope.

OPERATION,

MAINTENANCE,

SERVICING

Central to this seminar is in-depthunderstanding about the key parameters of all plantsand components. This knowledge is then applied tosecure uniformly high product quality. Crucial objec-tives here are learning how to prevent and quicklyremedy malfunctions.

PLANT TECHNOLOGY

Courses in this specialist fieldintensify plant operators’ know-

how, conveying a solid under -standing of the interconnected aspects of controltechnology. That supports the high-powered yet cost-effective continuous running of plants. This ishow we teach operators to achieve high levels ofplant efficiency. You can also ask our experts to helpimplement solutions in the form of concrete mea-sures for your plants.

All seminars are available in German and English, andare conducted at the German SMS Siemag locationsin Hilchenbach and Düsseldorf.

Invaluable here is that our trainers teach not only thebasic theory, but also advanced know-how for a pro-found understanding of the various topics.

All this is designed to ensure that, at the end of eachseminar, the participants understand complex techni-cal and technological structures relating to a certainfield and can apply this know-how at work.

BASICS OF MANUFACTURING MODERN STEELS –TRENDS IN MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY

It is a fact that steel – despite the increasing use of lighter-weight metals such as aluminum and mag-nesium – remains the commonest structural material of our time. There is exciting scope for combin-ing the different chemical compositions of various steel types with new processing technologies tocreate more effective grades all the time. Driving this demand is especially the “changeover in energypolicy” that calls for not only lightweight construction steels, but also new methods of power genera-tion. That’s because steel will be a key factor here.

The basic seminar “Manufacturing modern steels – trends in materials technology” invites all employ-ees working in R & D, technology specialists in the steel processing industry, and steel purchasingstaff to learn more about current trends in materials technology relating to steels.

What they can expect is in-depth know-how about the basics of materials technology for manufactur-ing innovative steels as well as about the various manufacturing processes themselves. Furthermore, participants learn how to compare European standards with other standards systems and what partic-ularities to look out for.

THE STUDY UNITS OF THIS COURSE:

Manufacturing processes

- Basics of material properties of steel (solidification, conversion)

- Ways of achieving the required properties

- New approaches in the simulation of property changes

- Introduction to the specifics of practical implementation in hot rolling

- Modern plate materials

- Manufacturing high-strength automotive grades

SAFE MACHINERY AND PLANTSSAFETY STRATEGIES – LEARNING WITH A MODEL

Here is a model-based course from SMS Siemag AG that offers you the ideal way to find out moreabout the theory and practice of machine safety.

DIN EN ISO 12100 or DIN EN ISO 13849-1 are just two key standards that crop up again and againwhen it comes to machine and plant safety. That’s why our seminar teaches you the requirementsthey specify and what that does or doesn’t mean in practice.

To bring the subject to life, we show you real situations that occur during operation, troubleshooting,or repairs. You experience how access is restricted by safety technologies. There are for instance lightbarriers that switch off dangerous movements if they are crossed. Yet it’s not just about theory. The“model” makes it possible for participants to try out the various safety functions and put what theyhave learned directly into practice.

You benefit from a compact, practical seminar that provides hands-on experience of the requirementsunder Machine Directive 2006/42/EC for machinery and plants in the European Union and their imple-mentation in the workplace.

THE STUDY UNITS OF THIS COURSE:

Depending on the target group, the following learning contents on product safety are conveyed at different levels of complexity:

Theory

- European safety requirements for machinery and plants

- Documentation requirements

- Selection of protective measures

Practice

- Practical operation of equipment, e.g. access procedures

- Safety precautions for servicing/maintenance

- Requirements for a complete machine group (linked plants) in practice
