We have noticed that a number of children have been dropped at school earlier than 8:45am throughout the past two weeks and we would remind parents that children can be booked into before school care if work commitments impede on the supervision times. Any student that arrives at school earlier than 8:45 is to be accompanied by an adult. This is around a duty of care to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students. Students walking home from school without parental supervision must leave the grounds prior to the 3:30pm bell, this is to ensure they are departing with the maximum number of other families and therefore not on their own.  Italian Classes (after school) Students will be taught the basic Italian requirements of proficiency in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, depending on the child’s year level by a fully qualified LOTE teacher with more than 20 years experience. Time:  3:30 – 4:30 pm (Prep – Grade 3)

4:30 – 5:30 pm (Grade 4 – Grade 6) Cost: $15 per lesson Please bring cash payment to the first lesson (alternate arrangements can also be made, just email or speak to Nellie) When:  Monday 24th February – 23rd March 2020  Where:  BER Building, Room 26. If you would like to enrol your child/children for the above classes, please email Nellie Barbuto: [email protected]    Sun Smart Wembley Primary School is a SunSmart school and students are required to wear a broad brimmed school hat at all times whilst in the playground – this includes during recess and lunch time, as well as physical education, sports sessions and whilst on excursions. Please ensure that your child has applied sunscreen prior to coming to school.

Page 4: Wembley Primary School · no campaign literature supporting candidates or groups of candidates distributed or posted in the school. Ballot papers will be distributed via the eldest

Children without a hat will be asked to spend their recess and lunch breaks in the shaded area near the canteen. Hats can be purchased from the office at a cost of $14. All hats should be clearly labelled with the child’s name and room number so they can be easily returned, if misplaced.  Student Free Days (Curriculum Days) for 2020 Each year schools receive four student free days (when student instruction does not occur) for professional development, school planning and administration, curriculum development and student assessment and reporting. School Council has approved the following three student free days:

All Prep parents who are eligible you will also need to complete a (CSEF).  Please note: the program for 2020 closes on Friday 26 June 2020.  Buddy Program – Persuasive Writing Each year all students across the school are allocated a buddy. The purpose of our Buddy Program is not only to support a smooth transition for children starting school, but to develop relationships between younger and older children, enhancing the sense of a friendly and supportive school community.  The Buddy Program enables younger children to feel safe and cared for, while older children feel valued and respected, and can develop responsibility and leadership skills. This role has very special responsibilities and means a great deal to our students. Often the buddy grades are preps and year sixes, whilst year one to year five classes are allocated a class each between the year levels, such as year five classes with year one classes, etc. Sabrina (one of our Year six students) wrote a persuasive letter to us asking if she could be allocated a prep buddy, as there were considerations made around the possibility of partnering our prep students with a year five buddy for this year, due to the Year 6 camping, filming, sporting and farewell commitments, and the possibility of not having adequate time to dedicate and mentor our prep students. Following conversations with the year prep, five, six and leadership team, together with Sabrina’s persuasive email demonstrating the power of student voice, we made the decision that prep students would in fact be partnered up with Year six students.   See Sabrina’s email below and a photo taken of Sabrina together with her Prep buddy Isabella! A beautiful story.   Dear Terry and Vassie,   I heard some news that there's a chance that grade 6 will not be given the chance to be a buddy to the new prep students.   This news is very sad and disappointing to me.   A lot of people in Grade 6 agree with me and they all felt down like me.

Page 6: Wembley Primary School · no campaign literature supporting candidates or groups of candidates distributed or posted in the school. Ballot papers will be distributed via the eldest

I would love to be that bright light to a special prep just like my buddy, Abbey, was to me when I was in prep. I still have fond memories of Abbey and ever since I got out of prep I wanted to be a Grade 6 and be just as important a person in a new student's life. That year has come I would hate to miss out. It seems that this chance is being taken away.   I think everyone in Grade 6 would love to have that chance to be a buddy to a prep. Although we are not officially their buddies we normally visit them at least once a week in the prep playground making them feel welcomed and making new friends. I see lots of people making these new preps feel welcome at Wembley.     We didn’t get the chance in Grade 5 and we all would hate to miss out in Grade 6. Please don’t change to grade 5’s until next year. You can do what you did last year the Grade 6’s got preps and one Grade 5 class.    I am hoping that you will reconsider and give us the opportunity to have the same impact on a prep that I experienced.    Thank you Sabrina M 6A

Instrumental Music Program We wish to inform the Wembley community that the Instrumental Music Program will continue in 2020.  In late 2019, conversations were had with the Instrumental Music Teacher around a review of the Instrumental Music Program and a possible shift in the instructional times. A decision was made to continue with the status quo for 2020. As such, the program will continue in 2020 in the same structure that was provided in 2019.  Violin lessons began this week and all other instruments will begin next week. We have been in contact with the Instrumental Music Teachers Laura S (violin), Elisa (violin), Laura O (keyboard), Valerie (keyboard), Phil (drums) and Tom (guitar).  Each respective teacher has been in contact with families of children that participated in the Instrumental Music Program in 2019, with information regarding lesson days/times and fees.  Moving forward, throughout 2020 we will be working together with our Instrumental Music Teachers, students, parents and classroom teachers, to engage in a review of our Instrumental Music Program to enhance the program for 2021.  We will be reflecting upon and acknowledging the great value that it brings to our students’ education and identity, and will be seeking input around the holistic approach to the programs, the structure of lessons across the week, and the balance between classroom instruction and instrumental instruction, to ensure we’re maximising all learning opportunities within and beyond the classroom.  We apologise for any inconvenience or confusion that might have been caused and look forward to working together as a community to build upon our valued Instrumental Music Program.
