From the Auxiliary President
Dear Volunteers,
As my second year as your Auxiliary President draws to a close, I
would like to say a big "Thank You" to all the members who served
on the Board, worked on committees and volunteered. Without each
and every one of you, we could not have had the successful year we
did. The dedication of your time and talents to WellStar Cobb
Hospital is a valuable gift which each of you gives so freely.
I would also like to thank Lori for the great working relationship we
have had for the past two years. In addition, a great a big "Thanks"
to Kandace, Crystal and Jestine, and to the President of WellStar
Cobb Hospital, Kem Mullins, for their support of our Auxiliary.
Make sure that you have your calendar marked for the Installation
of Officers Luncheon which will take place at 12:00 noon, Tuesday,
June 18, 2013 at the Freeman Poole Senior Center.
We have a great slate of officers being installed and I know you will
want to celebrate with them as they come on board. Please join me in welcoming our newest officers.

President - Miriam Jordan
President Elect - Susan Hayes
Secretary - Cheryl Hood
Co-Treasurers - Shirley Griswell and Barbara Turner
I know you'll support each of your Board members as
you have in the past. Again, it's been my honor to serve
as President of the WellStar Cobb Hospital Volunteers.
Sincerely,
Bill

I sure enjoyed seeing a good many of you at the Volunteer
Appreciation Luncheon. What a nice time we had. The
luncheon was provided by WellStar. WellStar wanted to
show their appreciation for the time you give back to our
hospital and your commitment to providing excellent
service to our staff visitors and patients. Thank you again
for all you do. We are filled with gratefulness for all of
those that made and or brought in cookies for “Cookie
Day.” Thanks to Special Events Chairperson, Snookie
Whittemore and her Committee for organizing this event.
I have a couple of very important topics I need to make you
aware of. We have also included articles in this newsletter
about these topics.
First, WellStar Cobb Hospital is rolling out a NO PASS ZONE
policy. This will include volunteers. Volunteers are
empowered to respond to a patient‟s needs. It involves
being aware of the patient call lights as we enter any
patient care area, by reminding us to look up for the call
light and respond appropriately. By implementing a NO
PASS ZONE in patient care areas, our patients will ALWAYS
get help as soon as they want it. When you respond to a
patient‟s call light, you feel empowered to play a part in
giving very good care to our patients. I‟m asking that each
of you read the article on the NO PASS ZONE and put it into
practice (see pages 13 and 14 for more details) .
Another topic is hand washing: Effective Hand Hygiene is
the single most important strategy in preventing
healthcare-associated infections. Studies have shown that
hand washing is the most important thing people can do to
prevent the spread of germs. There are secret shoppers
watching to make sure staff and volunteers are washing
/sanitizing their hands when they are supposed to.
Please read our Safety article on Hand washing.
From: Lori's Desk
Don‟t forget about Town Hall this month. Town Hall for
Volunteers will be on Thursday, June 27th at 2 PM. This is
a new day and time than what is has been in the past. This
is a wonderful opportunity to hear from our President of
WellStar Cobb Hospital, Kem Mullins about what is going
on in our community, our hospital and within the WellStar
Health System. This is also a great opportunity for you to
meet Kem and ask questions.
The VolunTeens will be here over the next couple of
months. Please take the time to introduce yourself to them
as you see them in the Volunteer Service office, in the halls
and cafeteria.
Now it‟s time for me to brag…. Let me tell you about my
new grandson….. His name is Samuel Connor Smith and
he was born on Wednesday, April 3rd. 8lbs. 9 oz, and 19
1/2 inches. He is so precious. We are very excited about
our new addition to our family. I would love to show him
off. So, stop by the office and I‟ll show you his picture. Or,
should I say show you my Brag Book.
Again, thanks for being wonderful WellStar Cobb
Volunteers.

This has been a busy May for us with Cookie Day
and Mother‟s Day – Pray this was a beautiful and
best day ever for all Mothers. Thank you all who
supported these efforts. It was fun helping with
Cookie Day. The Nurses were all so appreciative!
Great job to Snookie and her team.
Do you know Lee in VIP? He‟s a very affable
“young” man who celebrated his 62nd wedding
anniversary Sunday, May 26th, 2012. God Bless
this couple!
That brings us to Father‟s Day, June 16th and of
course, we shall have many gifts and an array of
scents for him! Shop „til you drop!!
Thank you all for continuing this wonderful work
of volunteering – would you also pass the word to
others and encourage him/her to join us? We are
always willing to have others join in this
endeavor. Thanks again.
Before you know it, summer will be upon us.
Have a great one – the best yet!!
Peace,
Yvonne Dotson

Hello Fellow Volunteers,
I pray all‟s well and much good health is enjoyed
by everyone in spite of our weather – at least
recent days have been just beautiful. Now we are
ready for “the beach”! However, the recent
devastation in Oklahoma has caused us pause to
pray for those families who have lost loved ones
especially, and all their possessions. You are in
our prayers!
Yes indeed, we are having “an Awesome Trunk
Show” Friday, June 14th from 7:00am to 7:00pm
in the Magnolia Room. This is in combination
with a fabulous boutique, Heart & Sole-located
on Concord Road in Smyrna. Please remember
the date- tell all your friends and family.
Something can be had for everyone! It will be
fantastic and fun!
The Women‟s & Children‟s Shoppe is well stocked
with latest designer fragrances (for men too!),
jewelry, scarves and handbags…ready for the
lady to step out in fashion…out on the town or to
the beach! Our baby‟s clothing and all
accessories continue to be “the talk” – unusual,
pretty and tasteful. Kudos to our buyers who
constantly and consistently look for the unusual,
gorgeous, and affordable finds. Thank you
Ladies!

WellStar Cobb Hospital Auxiliary and Volunteer Services are looking to go “green.” We are
reviewing ideas that can cut down on paper. We welcome any suggestions or ideas.
Reminders
Volunteer Services Department Office Door
We have had a new locking system put at the Volunteer Services Office door. This system was put in so that we could secure the Volunteer Services office when no one was in the office. For VIP volunteers – this means that if you leave the office and there is no one else in the office, you will need to close the door when you leave. Even if you are running an errand, you will shut the door. Do not turn the lock on the door and lock it. The door just needs to shut completely and it will automatically lock. If the office door is shut, then you will need to slide your badge at the card reader to the right of the door to get in. Please help us as we try to keep our Volunteer Services office safe and secure for everyone.
Special Events Corner I would like to "Thank" all volunteers who participated in the "Nurses' Week" Special Event/"Cookie Day". Cookie Day is a part of Nurses' Week when all volunteers are usually asked to bake or buy cookies to support the Hospital Auxiliary of Cobb! I would also like to extend an extra "Thank You" to all the volunteers who helped me deliver the containers - Linda Johnson, Bill Thompson, Barbara Turner, Lee Temple, Yvonne Dotson and Christiane Murray. Snooky Whittemore Special Events Chair

3 TBS White vinegar
4 TBS Brown Sugar
2 tsp Dry mustard
4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3 cups Ketchup
2 tsp Salt
¾ tsp Ground black pepper
¼ tsp Cayenne pepper
6 Cloves of minced garlic
1. Place the roast into a slow cooker along with the water. Cover, and cook on LOW for 2 to 4 hours, or until beef
can be easily shredded with a fork.
2. Shred the beef, removing fat as you go. Remove 1/2 cup of the broth from the slow cooker, and reserve for
later. Add the vinegar, brown sugar, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. Mix in the salt, pepper,
cayenne, and garlic. Stir so that the meat is well coated.
3. Cover, and continue to cook beef on LOW for an additional 4 to 6 hours. Add the reserved broth only if
necessary to maintain moisture. Serve on toasted buns. The meat can be frozen for future use.
Effective Hand Hygiene is the single most important strategy in preventing healthcare-associated infections. Studies have shown that hand washing is the most important thing people can do to prevent the spread of germs. However, a recent survey of people's hand washing habits conducted in public restrooms across the United States found that almost one third of people do not wash their hands after using the bathroom .
Hand Hygiene amongst health care works universally have been poor. Why? Heavy workloads - the busier you are the less likely you are to wash your hands
Time consuming - there just isn't enough time to wash your hands as often as you need to if using the traditional hand hygiene techniques
Hands don't appear dirty - bugs are there even if you can't see them
Problems with skin irritation - frequent washing with soap and water removes skin lipids and with some healthcare workers causes dryness, skin irritation and damaged skin
Sinks poorly located - if it's hard to get to a sink you are less likely to use it
Inaccessible hand hygiene supplies
Patient needs perceived as a priority over hand hygiene
Lack of knowledge or awareness of hand hygiene guidelines and/or the risk of cross-transmission of pathogens
Interesting Hand Hygiene Facts: Up to half of all men and a quarter of women fail to wash their hands after they use the bathroom
Right handed people tend to wash their left hand more thoroughly than their right, and visa versa
We have between 2 and 10 million bacteria between our finger tip and elbow
Damp hands spread 1,000 times more germs than dry hands
The numbers of germs on your fingertips doubles after you use the toilet
Germs can stay alive on hands for up to three hours
The average person has 1,500 germs on each square centimeter of their hands, and the average bathroom faucet has more than 229,000 germs on each square inch.
Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. It is best to wash your hands with soap and clean running water for 15 seconds. However, if soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based product to clean your hands. Alcohol-based hand rubs significantly reduce the number of germs on the skin and are fast acting. Importance of Hand Washing: Illnesses and diseases caused by bacteria and viruses can be very serious and can even cause death if not properly treated. Germs are spread three ways: airborne, droplet and contact. Tuberculosis or TB is an example of airborne, Pertussis is an example of droplet, but, most germs in hospitals are spread by contact, such as C. difficile and MRSA (staph.)
7
How to Wash Your Hands: 1. Use warm, running water 2. Use liquid or pump soap whenever possible 3. Rub hands together vigorously for 15 seconds 4. Pay special attention to the cuticles and underneath the fingernails 5. Rinse thoroughly and dry off hands with a dry paper towel 6. Turn off faucet using paper towel When to Wash Your Hands: Before…….

Elizabeth Thompson Gail Cromey
.

Gail Cromey was born on November 22, 1946 in Brockport, NY a
suburb of Rochester, twenty minutes after her twin sister Carole.
She met her husband Ted in November of 1971 and they were
married on June 30, 1973. They have three sons - Todd, Craig,
and T.J. (Jr.), thirteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren,
and one woofer, Eunice Marie. The Cromeys' moved to Georgia in
July, 1978 and bought their first home in Cobb County in 1979.
Gail worked for Golden Corral for 20+ years and retired in 2009.
Her husband of 37.5 years passed in November 2010. During
that difficult time she signed up for the grief counseling class
with Chaplain Raymond Coffman here at WellStar Cobb. In class
she met a volunteer who kept telling her to sign up and
eventually got her to become a volunteer in the spring of 2011.
Gail volunteers at the customer service department as a Red
Vest Ambassador doing a variety of tasks from helping families
find their love ones to assisting patients with info as permitted
and getting around the hospital. She says, Vicki Holly her direct
supervisor is wonderful - a great teacher and listener and we
work very well together.
In her own words, Gail tells us why she volunteers. "It started as a
way to get me out of the house since Ted passed. Now I look
forward to seeing the other volunteers and I have had a chance to
meet employees and vendors who pass by our desk daily. I have
a lot more happy days since I started to volunteer. I get so much
more than I give every day I work, forming some great
friendships. I love to cook and make chocolates. We share recipes at the information desk all the time".
Elizabeth Thompson, one of thirteen children, was born
August 20, 1944 in Sonoraville, Georgia into a big and
happy family. Growing up a farmers daughter, she worked
hard in the cotton fields, gardens, milked cows but loved
playing with her siblings, as well as, the pigs and
chickens. When Elizabeth was fourteen, she moved to
Atlanta and a couple of years later went to work at
sixteen. As divine destiny would have it, she met Bill at
church and they were married in 1960. Their union was
blessed with two boys and over the years the family grew
to include three grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
In 2006, Elizabeth began volunteering at WellStar Cobb
Hospital in both the Women's and Children's' Gift Shoppe
and Gift Shop working the register, pricing merchandise,
filling shelves and graciously greeting customers.
"I love to volunteer which gets me away from doing
housework, it's a great way to meet people and be of help
wherever I'm needed. I was so surprised to see how loving
all the volunteers are. We just give each other a hug. We
laugh together. Just a friendly hello and smile goes a long
way. It's hard to put into words how I really feel about
Lori, Kandace, Jestine and Crystal. I look on all of you as
my family!" is how she describes her experience as a
WellStar volunteer.

How to stay young
10
1. Try everything twice.
On one woman's tombstone she said she
wanted this epitaph: "Tried everything
twice. Loved it both times!"
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull
you down. (Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)
3. Keep learning:
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening,
whatever...
Never let the brain get idle. 'An idle mind is the
devil's workshop.
And the devil's name is Alzheimer's!
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until
you gasp for breath. And if you have a friend who
makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with
HIM/HER.
6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life is
ourselves. LIVE while you are alive.
Submitted by Kandice Busha
7. Surround yourself with what you love:
whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music,
plants, hobbies, whatever…
Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health:
If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get
help.
9. Don't take guilt trips...
Take a trip to the mall, even to the next
county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where
the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love
them, at every opportunity.
I love you, my special friend!
11. Forgive now those who made you cry.
You might not get a second chance.
Remember! Lost time can never be found.
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you
meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Hospital in the future, etc. WellStar Health System information will also shared. This will be a great
opportunity for you to meet some of Cobb Hospital’s Senior Leaders and ask them any questions you
may have.
