EMV chip cards are here! U.S. card issuers are now sending millions of EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa) chip cards to U.S. customers. The top U.S. card issuers plan to have 575 million EMV cards in circulation by the end of 2015.* You may already have received a new chip card yourself.

To accept EMV chip cards and comply with new EMV standards effective October, 2015, you may need to upgrade your point of sale (POS) terminals.

What exactly is a chip card? Chip cards have an embedded microchip that securely stores customer data. The chip is more difficult to counterfeit than magnetic stripe cards, because the information on a chip changes with each transaction. Data in traditional magnetic stripe cards is static, so once the stripe is copied, duplicate cards can be made easily.

Chip cards are already in use worldwide. For many years, other countries have used the chip card system to reduce card-present fraud, and the U.S. is one of the last to make this important change. Wider use of chip cards in the U.S. is expected to reduce card fraud.

Start planning for EMV to help reduce your risk of fraud Magnetic stripe cards are more vulnerable to fraud and are easy to counterfeit. As more U.S. businesses convert to EMV technology, those businesses that have delayed conversion to EMV chip card equipment are expected to be targeted by fraudsters.
