神奇国度缅甸

万人民，还会像他们的祖先那样，继续优哉

游哉地延续着传统的农耕生活，一代接一代

地繁衍下去。平和、淡然、单纯是他们一贯

的秉性。而且，在缅甸很难见到愁眉苦脸的

人，并不富裕的物质不会妨碍他们感受生命

的愉悦：女子笑的妩媚，男人笑的满足，孩

子笑的无邪，老人笑的智慧，而佛像，则笑

的慈悲。在这个国家，每个人都可以赤着

脚，在简单生活与来世的荣光中来回穿梭。

甚至只要你身处缅甸，会很容易相信生死轮

回。生不带来，死不带去；行善积德，心平

气静，这大概也是缅甸人笑容的源泉。

穿着罗裙，走起路来摇曳多姿的姑娘

是缅甸大街上一道亮丽的风景线。现代社会

的缅甸，街头随处可见穿着传统服饰——罗

衣，也就是纱笼的男女老少。看上去像筒

裙，实际上是将一整块棉布围在腰上，向左

折过去再绕回中间掖入腰间是女性的穿法，

叫“特门”；直接在腹部打结的是男性的穿

法，叫“笼基”。出乎意外的是，这种筒裙

也是学校校服的一种。

缅甸的男人生活悠闲，但他们一生必须

出家一次，出家次数不限，时间可长可短，

有的终身当和尚，更多的则是几年、几个月

甚至一两个星期。一般男孩到了15岁左右，

家长就要准备出家仪式，这对每个家庭都非

常重要。

沉“缅”佛光

缅甸被称为神圣的“佛教之国”。佛教在缅

甸已有2500多年的历史，佛教徒崇尚建造浮

屠，缅甸全国到处佛塔林立。因此，缅甸又

被誉为“佛塔之国”。阳光下熠熠生辉的佛

塔时时刻刻保佑着这个美丽的国度和人民。

有人曾打过这样的比方：把大大小小的佛塔

排列起来，真可以从缅甸的南疆排到北国边

陲，绵延1500多公里。

缅甸的僧侣甚至比政府官员更受人尊

敬，连绵起伏的山峰上，万千标志着佛祖遗

迹的金色佛塔点缀着座座山头。“佛光普

如果要用一个词来形容缅甸，我

想那就是“神奇”。这片神奇

的国度，如同一枚翡翠镶嵌在

东南亚与印度次大陆之间。西北与印度和孟

加拉国接壤，东北与中国和老挝为邻，东南

方与泰国毗邻，西南濒临孟加拉湾。

由于地理位置的关系，缅甸一年四季气

候宜人，诱人景致也是随气候变化而不停变

幻。大自然似乎特别偏爱这里，丰富多彩地

呈现各种自然景观。葱郁的喜马拉雅山脉密

林，雾气缭绕的群山，还有那静静流淌在山

间的小河，处处都流露着缅甸特有的天然和

质朴。跨越两千多年的历史，壮观的文化古

迹和悠远的藏传佛教，这个东南亚旅游天堂

犹抱琵琶半遮面地静静等待我们去揭开她美

丽的面纱。

质朴民风

如果不是人类社会的近代文明之风强劲吹

拂，也许，生活在缅甸这块土地上的5000多

照”是缅甸人的深信。随后的岁月中，无论

王朝怎么更替，岁月如何变换，虔诚礼佛的

特性总是根植于缅甸人的灵魂深处。无论是

在蒲甘辉煌的佛塔面前，还是在仰光金光闪

闪的大金塔下，抑或是曼德勒那一本巨大的

佛经面前，穿着简约、光着脚丫的缅甸人都

不分昼夜地对佛礼拜。仿佛一切都在佛主的

掌握之中，他们只需虔心敬佛，按照佛的旨

意行事，就可以在今生与来世中，轻松自由

地跨越，到达幸福的彼岸。

传统按摩与水疗

西邻印度，东邻泰国，夹在两个亚洲传统水

疗强国之间的缅甸水疗难免有些黯然失色。

但凭借优越的自然条件和自身的按摩传统，

缅甸同样具备丰富的水疗资源。

迄今为止，缅甸尚未有具备国际水准的

水疗机构，但受丰富多彩的地域文化影响，

许多不同风格的浴室和按摩沙龙热闹非凡。

缅甸的按摩传统由来已久，与泰国按摩有相

似之处，但技巧和方法更加独特。客人要和

衣躺在按摩垫上，按摩师用手掌呈螺旋状循

环往复，力道适中，这是缅甸按摩技术的一

大特色。按摩结束后还配合一系列瑜伽伸展

式动作，指导客人拉伸肌肉，灵活身体各关

节，以达到全身放松的功效。整套按摩疗程

结束，一般需要三个小时，略长于两个小时

的泰式按摩。

开放中的国家

很多人对于缅甸的东南亚第二大国家的称谓

非常惊讶，这确实是个拥有五千五百万人口

的国家，海岸线绵延两千多公里，地理自然

条件丰富优越。

是什么原因导致缅甸没能成为东南亚最

活跃的旅游大国呢？答案是，政治。1948年1

月缅甸脱离英联邦宣布独立后，随即爆发内

战，1974年宣布成立缅甸联邦社会主义共和

国，1989年又改称缅甸联邦。动荡不安的政

治牵制了整个国家的发展，丰富的资源未能

得到充分地开发利用。目前，缅甸每年的经

济增长速度不超过3%，几乎是世界上发展最

慢的国家。

最简单直接的例子就是缅甸货币在其他

国家不能兑换，许多国家拒绝与缅甸贸易往

来。在缅甸只流通两种货币，缅币和美元。

大多数酒店只收美元，街边的商铺、小店或

餐馆则更乐意接收缅币。有趣的是，崭新的

缅币有可能被拒绝，所以兑换货币的时候要

多加留意。信用卡在缅甸也是不接受的，可

以使用信用卡的城市，最近的就是曼谷了。

与泰国相比，每年来缅旅游的人相对

较少。事实上缅甸的旅游景点不比泰国差，

许多东南亚的奇观妙景也只能在缅甸看到。

只是由于经济和其他原因开发的不充分，外

界对缅甸的了解也不多。随着缅甸经济的发

展和社会的不断进步，终会成为世界旅游的

新热土。近年来缅甸的政治也在不断发展，

尽管效果细微缓慢，但却是好的开始。比

如，2013年在缅甸举办了亚洲运动会，2014

年在缅甸首都都内比都举行了东盟会议。

缅甸目前的酒店都会提供按摩服务，但

配套设施简单。尽管如此，全球的酒店集团

还是将目光聚集到这片待开放的旅游胜地。

随着越来越多的酒店入驻，基础设施建设也

将同步完善，交通、商场、餐饮、水疗都将

会一应俱全。目前，缅甸的交通情况非常

好，几乎不会产生拥挤想象，这对一个旅游

城市来讲极其难能可贵。赴缅旅游的游客，

以泰国游客为主，其次是中国游客。缅甸官

方统计结果显示，2010-2011年在仰光国际机

场入境的旅游人数为216,861，其中中国游客

占10%。

旅游在缅甸

如今，越来越多的中国游客喜欢去缅甸旅

游，你会发现他们当中大多数是年轻的背包

客，风尘仆仆，但又惬意十足，显然对这片

神秘的国度怀有极大的探知兴趣。如何在缅

甸享受一次难忘的旅游呢？

仰光

对于第一次去缅甸旅游的人来说，仰光市一

定是所有人的首选。尽管已不再是首都，但

仰光至今仍是缅甸的金融中心。相比内比

都，外国人更熟悉缅甸旧首都仰光的大名。

初次行走仰光，和想象中的不大一样，过

于沉稳，过于沉湎于历史的冥想，而那些建

筑和街道，显得有些陈旧。但用不了多长时

间，你便会爱上这块与世无争的平和之地，

正如“仰光”的缅文之意为“战争终止”一

样。这里处处皆是在东西方文化融合和碰撞

中留存下来的独有风韵，为之倾倒，也不免

慨叹。

仰 光 最 好 的 酒 店 当 属 G o v e r n o r ’ s

Residence，隶属Orient-Express酒店集团，自

然价格不菲。酒店保持了殖民地风格，秉承

其酒店集团细致入微的服务，极尽奢华浪漫

之势，而这里最便宜的房间也要两百美元一

晚，缅甸最昂贵的酒店当之无愧。不过在亲

身体验过后，非凡的住宿体验会让游客感觉

物有所值。

其 次 是 位 于 仰 光 市 中 心 地 区 香 格 里

拉集团旗下的Traders Hotel。旁边的The

P a r k r o y a l ， 其 服 务 和 设 施 都 能 与 著 名 的

Parkroyal酒店相媲美。

缅甸美食

缅甸属热带季风气候，平均气温可高达27℃

。由于常年气温较高，当地人偏爱吃凉拌和

油炸食物。其中较为出名的有凉拌茶叶，这

道菜的做法就是用泡过茶的茶叶和酱油一起

搅拌，加上大豆、炸花生、炸印度大豆、辣

椒、柠檬等材料，吃上去口感很特别，辣中

带有点甘味。

“蒙享卡”也是缅甸比较有特色的小吃

之一，它实际上是一种鱼汁米粉，其中曼德

勒的“金手艺”鱼汤米粉是最好吃的一家。

他们把河鱼或者湖鱼的肉剔出来，弄成鱼肉

条，而鱼汤熬成雪白状的鱼汁，与米粉配

在一起吃。“蒙享卡”是到缅甸必吃的一道

菜，口感也很特别。

无论在第一大城市仰光，旧朝古都曼德

勒，佛教圣地蒲甘，还是游走于茵莱湖畔，

或者到佛塔上看日出，就让我们忘却烦尘俗

世，尽情享受那原本只属于缅甸人的宁静

吧！

An Amazing LandBurma is a beautiful country still awaiting a flood of tourists. SpaChina's Wellness Editor Gareth

Myanmar, in a sense, has it all. It has

a lush, warm climate, wonderful

cuisine and a rich cultural heritage

balanced, as is the country geographically,

between the Indian sub-continent and South-

east Asia.

Within its borders are unexplored jungles,

parts of the Himalaya Mountains and more

beaches than can be counted. Add to this its

amazing history spanning two thousand years

and an array of spectacular monuments from a

deep and affecting Buddhist heritage and you

have a tourist paradise in waiting.

When Myanmar becomes part of the Asian

tourist circuit - which your correspondent fer-

vently hopes will occur within a short space of

time - it will also have spas aplenty. And they

could hardly be in a better place.

The fundamentals of Spa and massage

culture are well embedded in Burmese culture

- how could it not be sandwiched between the

two strong Asian spa culture powerhouses of

Thailand and India.

The local Burmese culture includes many

elements of the soft warmth that is so part of

the healing process in spa cultures in South-

east Asia. There are bathhouses and massage

salons of many varieties, but so far the inter-

national style of spa has not yet had a chance

to establish itself here. Yet it is all there, just

waiting to happen.

Like Thailand, Burma has a strong tradition

of massage, and there is a similarity between

the two. But the technique and approach of

Burmese massage is unique and very striking,

and feels like Burmese writing which appears

to the outsider to be a series of circular spirals.

A key part of the Burmese massage technique

involves a similar circular pattern performed

with the palms. The effect of the massage is

immediately relaxing and is often followed by

a series of yoga-style stretching movements

which is said to not only extend the muscles

and release tension, but also invigorate the

functioning of all the organs.

Like the Thai styles, Burmese massage is

traditionally performed with the receiver fully

clothed, lying on a massage mat. But typically

a massage session in Burma lasts longer - say

three hours as against two in Thailand.

To see the potential that Burma, or Myan-

mar as it is often now called, first consider its

geographical position.

Myanmar is neatly fitted between China

and India with Thailand right next to it. It is far

bigger than most people assume - one of the

biggest countries in Asia - set on the shores of

the Indian Ocean and extending to the Himala-

yas and the rugged jungle on its borders with

China to the east.

Most people are surprised when told that

Myanmar is the second largest country in

Southeast Asia and has a population of 55 mil-

lion people. Few countries offer such a diverse

range of scenery. Burma has a coastline which

runs nearly two thousand kilometers to form a

third of the country's boundary.

So what keeps it from being one of the

greatest tourist destinations in the world? The

answer is politics.

There has been what is a effectively a civil

war in progress in Burma since 1948, and

the country has been under the control of

the armed forces since 1962. Thus we have

the strange contradiction of one of the most

attractive and resource-rich countries in the

world also being one of the least developed

and most isolated. The country's economy

generally expands at a rate of less than 3%

annually, putting it amongst the world's slow-

est growing.

A simple example of the result of this isola-

tion is that the Burmese currency cannot be

legally exchanged anywhere else. And most

countries refuses to allow trade with Burma.

In Burma itself you can use one of two

currencies - the Myanmar kyat (pronounced

chat and normally designated as K), or the US

dollar.

It is worth noting that to be accepted, the

notes you use in either currency must be in

perfect condition, almost as if they have just

arrived from the printer, or they will be rejected.

So remember to check your change carefully.

Most hotels only accept US dollars. Street

traders and small shops and restaurants are

happy with kyat - again provided it is in pristine

condition.

Another resulting feature of travel to Burma

is that credit cards are not accepted. The near-

est place you can use them is Bangkok.

In test circumstances, tourism is of course

very under-developed and the number of tour-

ists who pass through Burma each year is

minuscule compared to Thailand. This must

change one day and, indeed, it is probably

changing already.

There have been political developments in

the past year which have given rise to hopes

for an opening of the country, and while

change is slow, and so far not fundamental,

it is a start. A step in the right direction. And

Myanmar surely needs the foreign currency

that can be generated by tourism.

Myanmar was set to host the Southeast

Asian Games in 2013 and in the following

year a 2014 Asean Summit meeting in Nay-

pyitaw – sometimes spelled Naypyidaw – the

new capital which has been built some 300

km away from Yangon (Rangoon), the old

capital. BUT Note that this new city should

not be on a tourist's schedule. Rangoon is

not now the capital, but it is still the commer-

cial center of the country and a busy and, by

comparison, thriving city.

So Myanmar is showing signs of an inter-

esting in opening up to the rest of the world.

There is not a major hotel group in the world

that has not got a plan ready to implement the

moment it can open up in Myanmar. And with

these hotels would come all the supporting

infrastructure, including shops and of course

spas.

Indeed, in almost any hotel in Myanmar

today it is relatively easy to arrange for a mas-

sage although there is no formalized structure.

But once the country opens up, a uniquely

Burmese take on spa culture will surely be a

major attraction. The question is when it will

happen rather than whether.

One big plus at the moment is that Myan-

mar also boasts one of the lowest tourist crime

records in the world. Hopefully, this is one

aspect of tourism that will not change.

Hotels in Myanmar today range from the

basic to the quite luxurious and it is at the top

end of the market we are undoubtedly going

to see the first total experience spas being

opened.

But as matters stand at the moment, Myan-

mar is somewhat difficult for tourists and only a

certain type of dedicated tourist ventures there.

The raw figures illustrate the situation.

Thailand provides the most number of

visitors which is understandable because the

two countries have a joint land border. China

comes second. Which is impressive in position

but less so in real figures.

The Myanmar government statistics body,

the Central Statistical Organization, reported

216,861 tourist arrivals through Yangon Inter-

national Airport in the fiscal year 2010-2011. Of

these, 22,871 came from China, representing

just over 10 percent of the total. Clearly, there

is plenty of room to expand from those figures.

If you want to visit Burma today, what is the

best way of doing it?

If you are at all concerned about comfort

and want a minimum of hassle, then you

should go for an individually tailored, preferably

conducted tour arranged by a well-respected

and upmarket travel agency. You will then

be pretty sure of staying in well-run, well-

maintained hotels and transported between

the three main destinations in the country with

a minimum of fuss and hassle. Treat it as a

luxury ten-day holiday.

Alternatively, you can make all arrange-

ments yourself, as you would in other coun-

tries. But in terms of Burma, that is a course

of action recommended only to the young, the

impecunious and the adventurous.

On a first trip to Myanmar you should focus

on three or at the most four places.

First of all is the city of Yangon, which

was until recently known as Rangoon. and is

still the commercial capital of Myanmar even

though the government is now elsewhere.

The best hotel to stay at in the city Yangon

is the Governor's Residence which is part of

the Orient-Express Hotel Group and is there-

fore not inexpensive. But this is a grand colo-

nial style hotel brought up to date with impec-

cable service by the Orient-Express group

working with the owners, Pan Sea, to create

one of the world's great hotels.

True, it takes a big bite from a budget

- rooms range from around $200 a night

upwards, but this is the most expensive hotel

in Myanmar. You may also almost certainly

agree that it is worth the price for staying there,

or just visiting, is truly amazing experience.

Far, far less expensive is the Traders Hotel

in the downtown district of Yangon which is a

member of the Shangri-La Group and lives up

to those standards.

The Parkroyal is another hotel to consider,

very near Traders and with a standard of

service and decor that you would expect for a

Parkroyal hotel.

Your next destination after Yangon will

be the city of Bagan on the banks of the

Irrawaddy River, which boasts, amazingly, over

4,000 Buddhist temples and hotels in every

price range.

The Hotel at Tharabar Gate, which is very

close to the old city of Bagan, is a stylish and

comfortable bungalow style hotel with lovely

gardens. It contains what it refers to as a spa

facility but this is somewhat optimistic. Bur-

mese massages are readily available there but

not, at the time of writing, the full spa experi-

ence. But no doubt it will come. In the mean-

time you can take a hot air balloon ride from

Bagan which is an unusual way to view some

of the marvels of this amazing country.

The English poet Rudyard Kipling was quite

correct when he referred to Burma as a "clean-

er, greener land." He wrote a poem about the

country called Road to Mandalay, when Burma

was a part of the British Empire, and it still

resonates to this day:

On the road to Mandalay,

Where the flying-fishes play,

And the dawn come up like thunder

Out of China cross the Bay.

It is worth seeking out the entire poem,

for you would need a heart of stone not to be

moved by it. And you should also include the

inland city of Mandalay on you itinerary.

In Mandalay, it is generally agreed that the

Sedona is probably the best hotel. It has a

splendid pool and garden.

Finally, on your first trip to Burma, you

should visit Inle Lake. There, as a unique hotel

experience, you can stay at the Inle Princess

which has 46 traditional dwellings built on stilts

along the shallow waters of the shoreline. It is a

splendid place to chill out and enjoy Burmese

life while viewing the lake.

There is a surprise in store for you nearby.

The Inle Lake View is a boutique hotel on the

shores of the lake which has a proper spa

and full massage and pampering facilities. It

offers traditional and oil massage and there is a

jacuzzi available.

A few words of advice: take anti-mosquito

spray with you. The best months to go as far

as climate is concerned are probably Novem-

ber to February. But the important point is

that you should start planning now. Get there

before the crowds.

在很多人看来，中药是“树皮草

根”，这是因为中药给很多人

的第一印象是“植物”。这没

错。20世纪80年代全国最大的一次药物普查

的调查结果显示，全国有中草药12807种，其

中植物药11146种，占了87%；动物药有1581

种，占了12.3%；矿物药80种，其中常用的有

30余种，仅仅占所有普查结果的0.7%。

矿物药虽数量稀少，但中国已经有3000

多年的矿物药应用历史。《周礼》(西周时期

儒家经典，公元前1046年-公元前771年)有“

医师掌医之政，聚毒药以供医事”以及“五

毒”(石胆、丹砂、雄黄、矾石、磁石5种矿

物药烧炼的升华物)等的记载，这就是指矿物

药，古代道家的炼丹术也是促使矿物药产生

的原因之一。

李时珍用了近三十年时间编成的药学著

作——举世闻名的《本草纲目》(明，公元

1578年)代表了古代中药资源开发利用的鼎盛

时期，书中收载药物1892种，其中矿物药多

达222种。此后的《本草纲目拾遗》(公元1765

年，清朝赵学敏编著)则可谓为收录矿物药之

最，达413种。

2000年版《中国药典》中收录了最常用

的23种矿物药，但在其同时收载的458种著名

的中药的成方及制剂中，却有100种包含有这

23种矿物药。能在1/4的成方和制剂中有一席

之地，矿物药之作用不同凡响也。

同样的矿物药因产地不同，微量元素的

含量与药材的外观性状和质量等级等会有很

大差别。矿物药为人体提供了所缺乏的矿物

质和微量元素；或者是利用了这类矿物质和

微量元素在人体内的作用，来抵制或扼制一

些已产生或将产生的疾病。你也许会问，古

代的矿物药为什么比现代利用的更多呢？那

是因为很多矿物药在现代能被简单提取、或

合成为营养类的微量元素和矿物质补充剂。

《神农本草经》(东汉，公元25-220年)

称：芒硝(Mangxiao, mirabilite)“主百病，除寒

热、邪气，逐六府积聚、结痼、留癖”，是

一种泻下、清热药，可治疗便秘，积食，消

肿止痛。芒硝多产于海边碱土地区、矿泉、

即便在中药材的比例中占据的份额极其微小，但矿物药当之无愧地是中医药三大来源

(植物药、动物药和矿物药)之一。一般可分为供药用的天然矿物、矿物加工制品及动物化石三类

盐场附近较潮湿的山洞中，内蒙古和山西的

盐池是著名产地。将芒硝填入挖去瓜瓤和籽

的西瓜瓜内，盖上顶盖，用竹签插牢，放入

瓦盆内，置阴凉通风处，待析出白霜时刷下

的白霜，就是我们很熟悉的“西瓜霜”。

常用于咽喉肿痛，牙龈肿痛或出血，急、

慢性咽喉炎，扁桃体炎，口腔炎，口腔溃疡

等。生活在空气污染的城市里，西瓜霜润喉片

(精装版5.5元/盒)不失为可常备的保健中成药。

通过朱砂(Zhusha, Cinnabar)中微量元素的

测定发现，铜、锌、硒、碲、铁这几种元素

普遍存在。有人认为最好的朱砂产自贵州万

山——中国汞都，鲜红有光泽、半透明、重

而脆、无杂质。朱砂对于心悸怔忡，失眠，

惊痫等症有很好的疗效，能镇定心神，外用

具有解毒功能，能扼杀皮肤细菌和寄生虫；

与雄黄、山慈菇、麝香、千金子等配伍，外

涂可治疮毒肿痛。朱砂的主要成分为硫化

汞，本身是有毒的。

和朱砂一样，很多矿物药既能治病，

也是“毒药”，例如砒霜、雄黄、硝石、明

矾。在没有办法用科学方法测定药物成分和

理化性质的中国古代，用的恰到好处则药到

病除，不然则性命攸关。也是因为如此，古

代只有高明的医生才能熟练使用矿物药，而

大部分的平常医生也只能用无关痛痒的树皮

草根来不求有功，只求无过。

铜、铅、铁，甚至金、银，即便不入

药，在古代中国人的生活方式中也已经自然

而然地成为了矿物药。它们作为主要食物容

器和工具，其矿物质已经通过很多渠道进入

到了人体。现在又流行起了银离子纯银保健

杯，有的价格高达3000多元，某种程度上是

具备一定的杀菌功效，但过量摄取同种矿物

质也并非明智之举。

很多矿物药除了自身的药理药性，还

具备了植物药和动物药所不具备的特殊性

质——矿物磁场。水晶、琥珀、石英、磁

石、玄武石、玉石，在现代人的养生保健方

式中，更多的是“外敷”方式来发挥出其矿

物药的特殊功效，这点在水疗里已经被应用

得非常普遍了。

Minerals in TCM, Marvelous and Dangerous

In the 1980s there was a national survey

on Chinese medicine showing that there

were 12,807 kinds of curative remedies.

Among them were 11,146 kinds of botani-

cal drugs, which accounted for 87 percent

of the total number. There were also 1,581

kinds of animal drugs which accounted for

12.3 percent, but there were only 80 kinds of

mineral drugs, just 0.7 percent. Only 30 kinds

of mineral drugs were commonly utilized in

medical treatment. These numbers show that

botanical drugs account for most Traditional

Chinese Medicines, which hints at why so

many people think that TCM drugs are all

made from herbs.

Although mineral drugs are rare in the

world, they have been used in TCM treatment

for more than 3,000 years. Zhou Li, a famous

Confucian classic book from the Western

Zhou Dynasty (1046 - 771 BCE), states that

medical officers were in charge of the admin-

istration of doctors and they had rights to

utilize these “poisons” to cure sickness (poi-

son here means minerals in TCM). In Zhou Li,

there is another description about “Five Kinds

of Poisons” which are substances refined by

firing: Chalcanthite, Cinnabar, Realgar, Alu-

men, and Magnetite. These should be the

earliest records of mineral drugs in Chinese

medical history. What’s more, the ancient

Taoist techniques of alchemy were one of the

causes of mineral drugs’ promotion.

The Compendium of Materia Medica (Ming

Dynasty, 1578 CE), a famous book compiled

by Li Shizhen over 30 years, is a representa-

tive work that shows the heyday of ancient

Chinese medicine resource development and

utilization. The book brings together 1,892

kinds of drugs, including 222 mineral drugs.

But it was the Supplement to Compendium

of Materia Medica, edited by Zhao Xuemin in

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are three main sources of drugs: botanical, animal, and mineral. Although the percentage of mineral drugs is less than the other two kinds of TCM drugs,

minerals still play a significant role in medical treatment

1765 during the Qing Dynasty, that collected

the most mineral drugs in history, with 413

kinds.

The 2000 edition of Chinese Pharma-

copoeia contains the 23 kinds of mineral

drugs most commonly utilized in TCM. It

also collects 458 kinds of Chinese medical

prescriptions and preparations, among which

there are 100 containing those 23 kinds of

mineral drugs. This would appear to show

how important mineral drugs are in TCM

treatment.

Owing to different places of origin, con-

tents, appearance, and quality of microele-

ment, different samples of of the same miner-

al drug will differ from each other accordingly.

Mineral drugs can provide human beings with

mineral substances and microelements that

are essential for living. Some doctors discover

these useful functions of mineral substances

and microelements, and utilize them to pre-

vent and cure sickness. In ancient times there

were much more mineral resources and it

was easier to extract or synthesize mineral

substances to create mineral drugs. This is

why mineral substances were much better

utilized in ancient times than modern times.

Through research into mineral substances

in Cinnabar, it has been found that there are

commonly several microelements present,

which are copper, zinc, selenium, tellurium,

and iron. Cinnabar produced in Wanshan

in Guizhou Province is considered the best

quality. The color is red, shiny and translu-

cent, without any impurities, and it is heavy

but fragile. Cinnabar can be used to cure

sicknesses like palpitation, insomnia, and

epilepsy. In addition, it has the functions of

pacifying one’s spirit and detoxicating, and

it can also kill bacteria and parasites on the

skin. Collocated with Realgar, Indian Iphigenia

Bulb, Musk, Moleplant Seed, and so on, Cin-

nabar can be applied to relieve symptoms of

swelling and pain, and remove the possibility

of festering of wounds. However the main

ingredient of Cinnabar is mercury sulfide,

which is harmful to human bodies.

As with Cinnabar, there are many other

mineral drugs, which can cure sickness but

are also “poisons” at the same time, such

as Arsenic, Realgar, Saltpeter, and Alumen.

There were no scientific tools and research

methods to analyze ingredients and the physi-

cochemical properties of mineral substances

in ancient China. Therefore, the usage and

dosage of minerals in medical treatment is

crucial in the process of medical treatment.

Excellent usage of minerals can save one’s

life; otherwise, one may be killed by the incor-

rect utilization or dosage of minerals. That

is why only professional doctors can utilize

mineral drugs in medical treatments, and nor-

mal ones generally stick to utilizing botanical

drugs to cure small sicknesses.
