    1. Root gap: separation between theedges to be welded at the root of the joint.

    2. Root face: surface of the jointpreparation perpendicular to thesurface of the plate.

    3. Bevel surface: oblique surface of the joint preparation

    4. Bevel angle: angle between thebeveled surface and a planeperpendicular to the plate.

    5. Included angle: total angle betweenthe two bevel surfaces.

    6. Seam width: effective width of the joint(distance between the bevels plusdepth of penetration).

    7. Thickness of the plate.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  4

    1. Throat thickness: distance betweenseam root and surface measured onthe bisector of the angle

    2. Leg length: distance between seamroot and edge

    3. Joint root: point in which the bottomof the seam intersects the surface ofthe basemetal  l

    4. Joint edge: junction point betweenseam surface and base metalsurface

    5. Joint surface: external surface of theseam

    6. Fusion depth: depth reached by thefusion bath from the surface of thebase metal

    7. Seam width: distance between the joint edges

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  5

The purposes of a weld preparation is to allow

access for the welding process, penetration

and fusion through the area of the joint and its

faces. The more you take out, then the more you

    must put back in.

It is a flat position with

    plate.

    Use this position, if at

    a poss e.

    “G” represents groove

    and “F” refers fillet

    welds.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  10

    It is a horizontal weld

    position.

     A little more difficult

    , ecause e mo en

    metal tends to sag.

    Use split bead

    technique.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  11

    It is a vertical position.

    Welding is usually

    done in uphill position.

    Use weave bead

    technique.

    It is a overhead weld

position. It is the most difficult

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  13

    Horizontal pipe axis.

Pipe rotation is allowed during welding tomake it flat position.

Either a split bead or weave techniquemay be used.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  14

    Pipe axis vertical.

Pipe is considered in a “fixed”

    position.

     Always use a split bead

    technique

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  15

Axis of the pipe is horizontal.

    No pipe rotation allowed.

A weave bead is best used.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF.Senior Project Engineer  16

Pipe axis is fixed inposition at a 45 degreeinclination.

The osition includes flat, horizontal, vertical, and overheadwelds.

A split bead techniqueis best used.
