PAGE 4 INTRODUCTION

Argweld® Weld Backing Tape® and Argweld® Weld Purge Tape10.5

pt has been designed to adhere to the backside of a weld to allow single sided welding from the front and the production of a flat, even weld bead.

The welds will be flat without drop through or icicles. There may be some oxidation, which can be minimised, although no heavy coking.

Any oxide can be removed easily, avoiding the need for grinding off heavy coked deposit and minimising post weld cleaning requirements.

The need for double sided welding and back gouging has also been eliminated.

When welding short distances you can apply a gas line under the tape by slightly arching the tape in the centre, providing a channel for the gas to flow through. This will result in a clean shiny weld.

Once welding has started, the expansion of the metal makes the tape go flat again, but without oxygen inside. The weld bead is cast flat onto the glass fibre and will be clean after welding.

Any oxidation can be further minimised by the use of argon/hydrogen gas mix for purging through the arch in the tape prior to welding and in the weld torch shield gas line.

Common metals welded with Argweld® Weld Backing Tape® include carbon, stainless, chrome-moly and duplex steels, copper nickel and cast iron.

The tape comprises a 75 mm wide (3"), heat resistant aluminium sticky tape, in the centre of which is a 25 mm (1") wide band of woven glass fibre cloth.

PAGE 5 INTRODUCTION continued

Weld Backing Tape® is available in a range of grades, from 80 amps through to 600 Amps.

It is possible to weld onto the tape with MIG, Stick, TIG or plasma processes, so long as the recommended current levels are not exceeded.

The lightweight grade comes in 25 metre lengths and the heavyweight and super heavy weight in 12.5 metre lengths.

If lengths are needed to be joined, rolls of the sticky aluminium tape without the fibre, are available from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, allowing a small length to be cut off to join two lengths of the Argweld® Weld Backing Tape® together.

Material safety data sheets (MSDS) are available and a synopsis is published in the following pages. Other products for purging are also listed and should you have any problems in use, please contact us or your nearest distributor.

PAGE 6 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

1. Establish that your weld procedure calls for a weld current of less than 80 Amps for the light duty tape, 160 Amps for the medium duty version, 240 Amps for the heavy duty and the 600 Amps for the super heavy duty.

2. Ensure grades of tape are suitable.

3. Establish the length of the weld to be made.

4. Cut off the measured length of tape, adding approximately 15 cm to allow for error.

5. Clean the surface where the tape is to be applied, using an acceptable solvent or metal cleaner.

6. Ensure that there is no residual dust, dirt, scale, etc on the surface.

7. Peel back the protective tape from the sticky side of the aluminium to expose a short length of say 150 mm (6”).

8. Hand press the sticky surface to the metal, covering the joint evenly with the glass fibre.

9. Continue to peel back the protective cover, sticking down the aluminium tape as you go, until you reach the end of the weld path.

10. Using sharp scissors, cut off any spare tape remaining.

Note: Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® or your local distributor can supply a set of data application sheets and or a set of training posters on request.

Argweld® PurgElite® Inflatable Tube, Pipe and Pipeline Weld Purging Systems simplify the process of inert gas purging and are quick and easy to install. New, low profile Intacal® technology, eliminates the big metal valves that are difficult to set. Suitable for tubes and pipes from 1” - 24” (25 - 610mm).

Argweld® QuickPurge® Inflatable Tube, Pipe and Pipeline Systems are used for larger diameter, high quality, reliable welding of stainless steels, duplex steels and titanium tube and pipe joints to ensure a very fast weld purge time and a very high quality weld root, free from oxidation and discolouration. Suitable for pipes of 6” - 88” (152 - 2,235 mm). With new RootGlo® accessory and new IntaCal® purge gas release.

The Argweld® HotPurge® Pipe Weld Purging Systems For Heat Treated Chrome and High Strength Stainless Steels where the post weld heat treatment temperatures may be as high as 300˚C (572˚F). These high quality manufactured heat protected systems are suitable for the welding of pre-heated pipework, such as chrome steels, typically P91, CMV, etc.

PAGE 12 OTHER PRODUCTS

HFT® also have other products for the welding industry.

The original MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrode.

• The Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes long life non thoriated tungsten electrodes.

• Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are the only fully traceable tungstens available. Many of our customers report that they perform better than other types of electrodes for the majority of TIG and plasma applications.

Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are thoria free and environmentally friendly. When used in automatic and manual welding processes, operators experience less down time and can achieve full weld penetration with less heat input and up to ten times greater arc striking before re-grinding is necessary.

New Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes work just as well on DC welding of steels as well as AC welding of aluminium. They perform much better than zirconiated tungstens and last longer. One Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrode does all TIG and Plasma welding.
