Homeless Marine Veteran Provided with a place to live

The Community of Hope and Slattery Detachment combine resources to provide assistance to a homelessMarine veteran who had no place to live. Thankfully the Community of Hope was able to provide him witha place to live, but he would have to wait for it. He was staying at the Red Roof Inn on Route 46 inParsippany and he had no money to pay for the hotel room where he could stay while waiting for theplace to live:

After Commandant Freeman was notified about the Marine's need., he contacted other detachmentmembers and they then contacted a POC at the Community of Hope to verify. the Marine's need. Aftermuch deliberation a decision was made for the detachment to pay for the hotel room until the Marinemoved into the place provided by the Community of hope. A check for $750 was was paid directly to thehotel. Hopefully this assistance for the homeless Marine will get him back on his feet.

Making of a Hollywood Marine

MCRD San Diego. MCRD - Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Believe me the name tells you nothing. MCRDSan Diego is located next to Linberg Field (now, San Diego International Airport), the airport for San Diego. Our Quonset Huts were located almost next to the fence that separated us from them. You could also seean outdoor drive-in theater. Knowing freedom was just a jump over an 8 foot tall fence did not help thesituation any one bit. Many a scared young man jumped that fence.

We lived in Quonset huts. The restrooms (heads), were in another Quonset hut. 2 huts for 60 men plusone head. It never gets cold in San Diego. Right! Sleeping in the huts wasn't all that bad because you werejust to tired to care. Believe me, sleep was not a problem. Getting up at 5:00am was.

At 3:30am, a plane would take off from Linberg which worked to my advantage. We had bunkbeds and mybunkmate was Richie also from Wisconsin. After the first week of being smacked around for not having ourbunks squared away and/or falling out on time dressed, I decided to equal the playing field. I heard the Jetleave at 3:30, and got Richie up. We got dressed except for the boots and tops, then made our bunksexcept for the fart sacks and hopped back in covering up with the fart sacks. When the DI quietly said,“Platoon 285 on the road in 10 minutes.” we were only 5 minutes from done. Tighten up the bunk, put thefart sack on and slip into our boots and lace up. He tried to catch us by coming in at 4am with a flashlightbut never did figure out how we did it and we never told them.

You spend a lot of time just marching. Marching to the mess-hall. Marching to classes. Marching to the trailfor the 3-mile run. Marching to the parade-field so you could learn how to properly march. The parade-fieldwas and still is a very large area of black-top. The parade-field is surrounded on all sides by offices andliving quarters of the Depot staff.

You were the property of the drill instructors - called “DIs”. Each platoon had three. Larry, Moe and Curly. No really, these were dedicated Marines. The problem is that after all these years I have could never forgettheir names.

The oldest and most senior was a staff-sergeant who saw action in Korea. S/Sgt. Aloia was his name. Niceguy at the end but by then it didn’t really matter as we would never see him again. He was a very imposingguy, short but imposing. Scary. If he said, “Jump!” You went up and didn't bother to ask how high. He'd letyou know.

Next in line was a sergeant. He was a tall and lanky Marine. Sgt. Barker and he gave the appearance ofbeing a total, squared away Marine but also a push-over. If you thought he was a push-over then you weregoing to regret that opinion. He and Aloia ran the platoon like a precision Swiss watch.

The third DI was a “looney-toon”. He was a buck-sergeant with no combat experience. Sgt. Peyton - notmy idea of what a Marine should have been. A bit over weight and frumpy. His dream was to get intocombat himself and get the Medal of Honor. Considering the Vietnam War was just beginning I'm sure hehad his chance, but I doubt he ever got past being wounded.

After the fourth week we were blessed by gaining a gunny-sergeant (the 4th DI) who was totally worthless.Gunny Smoot was his name and a Marine he wasn’t. He would later go on to work on staff at the MarineHigh School in Texas.

We had a crazy group who ran the list from Montana country boy to hot-shot from Chicago (he peeved meoff and I stuck his head in one of our wash buckets we used for seats. We had a very rich guy from Kansaswho owned a meat-packing company and a poor black guy from Mississippi. Yes, we had a mixture. If wehave room in a future newsletter, I’ll tell you more about boot-camp.

Making of a Hollywood Marine Continued

After the second week I was “promoted” to be the Head of the Head Detail. Three of us cleaning the DIsHead. Well it seems one day I really had to take a “sit-down.” And no sooner did I take down my skivviesand plop down but the door swung open and there stood S/Sgt Aloia. I don’t have to tell you what happennext but, “Down and give me 50.” would have been easy. After the first week of the “sh-- detail” he startedto pick on others. I learned from that, the DIs can hear you at any place at any time.

My most memorable experiences were on forced 3-mile runs. One was at the rifle range at CampMathews in La Jolla, Ca.. We were running along in platoon formation when as we passed another groupthe DI (I think it was Barker) yelled, “Get them.” the entire platoon broke formation and started kicking thecrap out of the outer platoon. After a few seconds he again yelled, “285, fall-in and resume running.” Ithought it was pretty shitty to do that but, just following orders. Another time at MCRD San Diego, maybe aweek or two later we were on another 3 miler when we went down this dirt path and hid behind a large hillnear the fence between MCRD and the Naval Recruit Depot. We waited about 15 minutes and alongcomes a group of recruit boots. They got right next to the hill on the other side of the fence and our DIyelled, “Get them.” Well those Navy boots never knew what hit them - rocks, dirt chunks and anything wecould pick up went flying. Another “shake-your-head” day.

We finally graduated and off we went to ITR (Infantry Train Regiment) up the coast. Strange things theretoo but much easier to handle.

Never did make PFC on time as They knew I was doing things after the “Head’s Head” but never couldcatch me.
