Welcome to Year 7 ……

My name is: In Year 7 I shall be attending:

This booklet is really about you becoming the best you can be when you move up to secondary education in September. It’s an exciting time for you, but for some of you it’s also a worrying time, so this booklet will take you about your new academy and answering many of the questions you’re dying to ask. You’ll get this booklet shortly after some Buckler’s Mead teacher’s people you’ve already met:

Mrs Hurd Year 7 Co-ordinator

Everyone has questions and worries when they are about to start Secondary education. A year ago, our current Year 7 were in

exactly the same position as you are now. They have come up with some frequently asked questions about starting Buckler’s Mead and, more importantly, they’ve tried to answer them for you…

If you don’t get changed for P.E. in two minutes, do you get a detention?

No, you won’t – but you are expected

to get changed quickly.

Are the teachers really strict?

Quite. Mostly they’re nice and only get really strict if you behave badly.

Are there students who give you drugs at Buckler’s Mead?

Not that I know, and I know quite a lot. If you were offered you could tell any

teacher and they’d sort it straight away!

Are you forced to smoke?

Don’t worry nobody’s going to come up to you and force a fag in your mouth. The best advice is to stay away from people who smoke.

Do you really get thrown in the pond?

Yeah, right! No, it’s just

another tale.

If I get picked on, what should I do?

Go and see your form tutor or

your Year Co-ordinator straight away. They’ll make sure it gets

sorted out.

Is it true you get your head flushed down the loo?

Not at all! That’s just an old wife’s tale – or an older student’s tale to scare you!

If I get lost will I get in trouble?

Not for the first couple of

weeks – and there are plenty of people to ask if you’re not sure. After that you’ll be expected to

arrive to lessons on time.

… and here’s what they have to say about their first year at

Buckler’s Mead Academy…

I love it here and I think that you will

too!

Interform is great – you get to compete in loads of sports against

other forms.

The best thing about Buckler’s

Mead is the sports

facilities. My form has

been named most sporty

form. Last week I went on a trip to Mill on the Brue and had an

amazing time. There are loads of trips to choose from.

If you have a problem someone will sort it out fast.

The best thing about my first year has been all the new friends I

have made.

Lessons are really good fun and interesting.

The teachers are caring.

On my first day I got lost before every lesson, but nobody

minded.

I’ll never forget the day the year 7 girls’ football team won a national tournament.

When you work well you get loads of

rewards. I love learning new languages.

My most memorable moment would have to be when I nearly fell in

the pond!

There are such good computer

facilities.

The Science block is amazing – I

can’t believe how independent I have become.

I like being here because there are lots of new things to do and opportunities to

get involved in.

There are so many after school clubs I’ve always got something

to do with my friends.

People often look at a young baby and see a resemblance to other people. You probably have been told that you have your Dad’s eyes, or that you look just like your

grandmother (minus the wrinkles of course!)

You may also have marks that show what happened to you – scars, scrapes and bruises. These, together with your clothes, help to build up the picture that people

have of you. They are part of your identity.

Task Draw a picture of yourself below, and label your family features,

scars and marks and skills and habits.

10 | P a g e

It’s about time you got to know some of your new classmates, so pair up with another member of your tutor group, someone from a different

Primary School, someone you’ve never met before. Ask them these questions and record their answers.

Smart academy uniform is essential and you’ll want to get organised in plenty of time for your first day at Buckler’s Mead. Make sure your parents see this check list so that

they know exactly what to buy.

18 | P a g e

Pens (black or blue for most lessons) Pencils An eraser A ruler A pencil case or tin Colouring pens or pencils A protractor A pair of compasses A reading book (carry it in your bag at all times) A sensible school bag

In order to learn you need to come to the academy properly equipped. Here are some things you’ll need to organise in time for your first day at Buckler’s Mead.

Don’t forget to label all your belongings, especially items of uniform. Your belongings are your

responsibility. Don’t lose them!

19 | P a g e

There are many reasons why students, parents and staff at Buckler’s Mead are very proud of our academy. One key reason is that respect for the academy and it’s many resources is very strong. You will also have the responsibility to continue this tradition. “Everyone will act with courtesy and consideration and respect to others at all times”. This is one of our most important approaches to academy life. It basically means…

We always try to understand other people’s points of view. In class, we help to create an excellent working environment by

arriving to lessons on time, bringing the necessary equipment, listening carefully, following instructions and helping where necessary.

We all move quietly and sensibly around the academy, walk carefully through corridors on the left and carry our bags safely.

We always speak politely and show respect. We keep the academy clean and tidy by using bins and taking care

of our own and others work. REMEMBER RESPECT AND SAFETY otherwise you will lose your

free time. If you really succeed in this you will also receive credits and

commendations as well as rewards from your tutor and Year Co-ordinator

20 | P a g e

All members of the academy are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and responsible manner. You should walk on the left hand side of all corridors. We are all expected to be polite and considerate at all times. You must only use the Tower Road and St John’s road entrance to the academy. No student is allowed to leave the academy grounds without official permission from a person in authority. If and when permission is given you must sign the signing out book kept in reception and sign back in on your return. Students must not ride motorcycles or scooters to the academy without permission. Students must walk their bicycles onto the academy grounds. You are expected to be punctual for all registrations and lessons. All students are expected to wear full academy uniform. You are responsible for providing your own equipment (PEN, PENCIL, RULER, and RUBBER). You should also carry a reading book with you at all times (can get from Study Centre) Smoking and chewing gum are banned in the academy. Detentions will be issued to students who break these rules. All our rules are based on common sense. They allow us to have an excellent environment with many different opportunities. Always remember RESPECT and SAFETY and you will enjoy a happy, enjoyable first few weeks and a successful time at Bucklers Mead. You will quickly find that credits and commendations will be awarded to those who try their best and produce their best in lessons and other activities. These can lead to some excellent prizes.

21 | P a g e

CONGRATULATIONS!!

You have successfully completed your first day as an official Buckler’s Mead student. Tomorrow you’ll start lessons and will need to refer to your timetable to find out where you have got to get to. Don’t worry though; there are plenty of people around to help you if you get lost or confused. It’s important to get the basics right, so make sure you’ve answered all the questions below before you leave today. WELCOME TO BUCKLER’S MEAD ACADEMY AND GOOD LUCK!

What time do I arrive for morning registration each day? Which room do I register in? What rules does my form tutor have for registration time? What equipment must I bring every day?
