decades, but finally in fall of 2012, the West Philadelphia Branch was renamed the Wynnefield Branch, solidifying its standing in this residen-tial neighborhood just off of City Line Avenue and a mile from St. Joseph’s University. While neighbors and newcom-ers alike have been getting to know the branch by its new name, expanded programming and facility improvements make it a better place than ever to play and learn.

The revitalization of the jazz ensemble program has led the way. As recently as two years ago the branch had just one jazz ensemble, where today six groups rehearse each week under the direction of skilled jazz faculty who teach jazz standards, improvisation, musicianship, and performance.

Amy Hughart has seen tremendous growth, both in the jazz program and at the branch in general, firsthand as a parent, then as a member and now President of the Wynnefield Branch Board. “This has become a really vibrant community for budding musicians from Philadelphia, the Main Line, Upper Darby and other schools,” she says. “It’s exciting to see the growth in interest in jazz, and also in the many other programs offered here.”

Building on connections with schools in Philadelphia and outside the city, the Wynnefield Branch, led by Branch Director Dr. Karin Orenstein, has undergone tremendous growth over the past two years.

this fall and the introduction of an Adult Jazz Ensemble, has coincided with growth in other programs. The branch piloted Children’s Music Playshop in fall 2013, and has grown both its string orchestra program and chamber music program over the past year.

Dr. Karin Orenstein, who came to Wynnefield as Branch Director after previously serving as a piano faculty member at the Camden and Germantown Branches, has worked to develop many of these programs through connections with music teachers and principals at local schools. “I try to find out what their needs are, what kind of students they have, and what their students want,” she says.

Orenstein has observed numerous friendships and a feeling of community developing among the influx of middle school-aged students. “There’s no sense of competition among them,” she says. “They want to play their instruments for one another and help each other with their homework.”

There’s never a dull moment at Settlement Music School. This is certainly a familiar phrase to our staff and faculty. While the bustle is apparent during the busiest parts of the year when the branches are filled with students, teachers, and families, even during the “quiet” times, there is a constant buzz of activity behind the scenes.

This year, in particular, the traditionally quiet summer months marked a time of significant growth and change for Settlement. The Wynnefield Branch underwent a series of renovations, which are described in the cover story. As aesthetic improvements continue to take place alongside growth in programming at all of our branches, we will continue to highlight each of them in our print and online media. An exciting new project that has been years in the making is about to get underway at the Germantown Branch. Be sure to follow us on our social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) to see the latest changes as they are happening!

Starting in June and extending into the new school year, we also brought the Kardon Institute, a valued partner for several decades in providing arts therapy, into the Settlement family. Now operating as the Kardon Center for Arts Therapy, we are excited to work with program director Mark Bottos and the Center’s therapists in continuing and expanding their vital work.

With the arrival of the fall and the start of the 2014-15 school year, the branches once again enjoy a flurry of motion throughout the hallways and in the studios. This year, we will present more than 250 free performances across our branches. At recitals, performance hours, and master classes, students of all ages will further their musical development by taking the stage in front of friends, family and community members.

Whether you attend one of these events in person, or enjoy the pictures and videos that we share online, I encourage you to engage in the life of this institution and be an active member of the Settlement community that means so much to all of us.

Warmly,

Visionary philanthropist Emanuel “Manny” Kardon made generous gifts to name both the Kardon Institute and Settlement’s Kardon-Northeast Branch. On July 1, 2014, Kardon’s contributions became indelibly linked as Settlement Music School opened the Kardon Center for Arts Therapy. Operating from the Kardon-Northeast Branch, the Center offers music, art, and dance/movement therapy services to individuals with various special needs across each of Settlement Music School Branches and at other locations in our community.

The Kardon Center’s creation follows the decision of the Kardon Institute’s Board to dissolve the institution. Integral to Settlement’s history, the Kardon Institute was founded in 1976 out of a partnership between Settlement Music School and the Moss Rehabilitation Hospital. The Institute formed its own independent 501(c)3 in 1985 with a mission that evolved from offering adapted music lessons to individuals with physical disabilities to using the creative arts as a means of achieving personal growth for children and adults living with physical disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, and other challenges.

Settlement’s Kardon Center is led by Program Director Mark Bottos, who was with the Kardon Institute for 25 years. “Settlement Music School has provided the most seamless transition and continuity for the programs, families and therapists of the Kardon Institute that

could not be found with any other organization in the community. It was only natural for the programs to return to their familiar home since the inception of the program started with Settlement Music School,” says Bottos.

The addition of the Kardon Center effectively makes Settlement the primary provider of arts therapy for Philadelphia. Executive Director Helen Eaton says, “We feel privileged to have this opportunity to serve the families of Kardon and to work with their outstanding therapists and staff. We are enormously grateful to Kardon Institute’s Board and staff for all their help and guidance during the transition.”

“With the reunification of the Kardon Institute programs under the Settlement Music School umbrella, there are mutual benefits and opportunities for meeting a wide continuum of educational and therapeutic needs of the communities Settlement serves,” says Bottos. “Not only does Settlement provide the Kardon Center a larger infrastructure and network to develop its programs, but the Kardon Center will now be able to provide a more closely and integrated resource for teachers and families to determine the best approach to arts experiences for children and adults.”

Branch facilities are keeping pace with growth. A variety of renovations, funded through the 25th Century Foundation, took place over the summer, transforming the lobby and other public spaces into brighter, more welcoming spaces hearkening back to the mansion the Branch once was.

All told, the Wynnefield Branch is now home to a greater number of students and families from the adjoining neighborhoods as well as from the Montgomery County communities on the other side of City Line Avenue. “You can see the possibility for this school — and for music — in children’s lives, starting from when they’re toddlers,” Hughart says. “We want to make this a warm place where just being here makes people happy.”

The first year of Settlement Music School’s Music Education Pathways program (MEP), our city-wide school partnership program funded through generous support from the William Penn Foundation, wrapped up on June 9 with an event that will become a yearly tradition. The PECO Pathways to Performance concert brought together MEP students to perform side-by-side with members of the band, orchestra, and choir programs from all of Settlement's branches. On the professional-quality stage of Temple University's Performing Arts Center, all students were able showcase what they learned throughout the year through guidance from both new and long-time faculty.

Amid the performances, the principals from Settlement’s first two MEP partner schools — Dr. Sonya Harrison from Henry C. Lea Elementary School, and Sarah Elder from Hardy Williams Elementary, a Mastery Charter School — joined together with Executive Director Helen Eaton and MEP Manager Sally Weiss in acknowledging the accomplishments of the students and the support they received from their families.

Growing in Year TwoMEP is operating at both Lea and Hardy Williams once again this year, with two new partner schools added to the lineup. Choir and orchestra instruction are underway at Thomas Holme Elementary, which has been paired with the Kardon-Northeast Branch, and Pastorius Elementary, a Mastery Charter School, which has been paired with the Germantown Branch.

For more information on MEP and the potential for new off-site partnerships, visit www.smsmusic.org/mep or contact MEP Program Manager Sally Weiss at 215.320.2686 or [email protected].

TECH SUPPORT: A salute to our IT volunteers A hearty “thank you” goes out to two individuals who have each dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours over the last year to help support our technology infrastructure.

Allan Hasbrouck, a resident of Queen Village and alumni parent who retired from the Philadelphia Inquirer as technical manager, reached out to the School in summer 2013, wondering whether there were ways that he could help out the School. When we found out his technology background, it was a no-brainer: Patrick Leiter, Director of Information Services, needed help maintaining and upgrading more than 65 workstations across the School’s six branches. Allan stepped in, and has been hard at work one day a week since then, keeping systems going and allowing Patrick to focus on more strategic elements of his job. In Patrick’s words, “Allan keeps my sanity intact – I can rely on him, and he works harder than some people who get paid.” Allan is all smiles, brightens the day of any staff member he sees, and his paycheck, as the School’s Accounting department notes, is the easiest to cut: it’s all zeroes.

Meanwhile, Dave Elderkin of Wynnewood, who has volunteered extensively with the Chester County Community Foundation, Kennett Symphony, KIPP Charter Schools, and other organizations, was looking for his next volunteering gig, and a friend turned his attention to Settlement. When he reached out to us, and we learned of his expertise in database technology, a long-desired project became a possibility. Over the last year, Dave has helped the School identify and implement a software system to improve communications with alumni, parents, students and donors, and which needed to be aligned with the School’s current enrollment database. Working countless hours alongside Patrick Leiter and meeting with administrators across the School, Dave has helped formalize business practices, whipped raw data into shape, and lifted the spirits of the implementation team along when the going gets tough. His impact will be felt for many years, well after he moves on to his next cause—which we hope will be a long time from now.

If you would like to volunteer and make a lasting impact at Settlement Music School, please let us know. We have a particular need for volunteers to help with staffing and maintaining the libraries at our branches. Please contact your nearest branch if you are interested.

New Chamber Ensemble paves the way for Advanced Study

Hard on the heels of last spring’s 10th anniversary of the Joseph and Marie Field Chamber Music Center and the bravura performance by the Gail W. Snitzer Advanced Study String Quartet at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Settlement Music School is thrilled to announce the establishment of a new endowed ensemble, the William A. Loeb Chamber Ensemble.

This ensemble, which becomes the 10th named ensemble at Settlement Music School, was made possible by William A. (Wally) Loeb, a long-time supporter of the School and avid audience member at performing arts institutions across the region. The ensemble serves as a training ground for young musicians of extraordinary talent who do not yet qualify for Settlement’s Advanced Study Ensemble program, by virtue of age or experience, but whose talent and drive are indicators of their future success as musicians.

In making the gift to the School that made this ensemble possible, Mr. Loeb says, “I have always enjoyed attending and supporting the performing arts in Philadelphia. This includes instrumental and vocal music, dance, opera and theater, whether amateur or professional. What gives me the greatest pleasure is watching and listening to dedicated and talented youngsters, such as those studying at Settlement Music School. That is why I have chosen to sponsor an ensemble of promising young musicians.”

This year’s William A. Loeb Chamber Ensemble is a trio coached by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kardon Distinguished Faculty Chair Jean Louise Shook. Vanessa Poe, Jennifer Lee, and Immanuel Mykyta-Chomsky gave a spectacular performance at the 2014 Annual Concert, and we look forward to seeing them develop further, as musicians and as an ensemble, in the coming years.

The William A. Loeb Trio, with violinist Vanessa Poe (14), cellist Jennifer Lee (14), and Immanuel Mykyta-Chomsky (13), along with William A. (Wally) Loeb and chamber music coach Jean Louise Shook.

Libby Harwitz knows that the table in the main lobby at the Mary Louise Curtis Branch is the same one where she sat over 60 years ago waiting for her violin lessons. Her knowledge of Settlement goes even deeper, of course: As a member of the Board of Trustees for the past decade, and president of the Mary Louise Curtis Branch Board since 2008, Libby has been a fixture at the branch that took several trolley and subway rides to get to from her childhood home in West Oak Lane when she was a student in the 1950’s. Each week, she can been found in the branch lobby, meeting and greeting parents, students and faculty alike, on the evenings when she picks up her granddaughter following her piano lessons. In recognition of her lifelong commitment to Settlement, Libby was honored in June as the recipient of the Jeanette Selig Frank and Blanche Wolf Kohn Founders Award.

Q: Even though you pursued a career outside of music, how did studying music impact your life?

A: Attending Settlement Music School changed my approach to art and beauty. It taught me so many essential life lessons: how to behave, how to communicate, and — through playing chamber music — how to collaborate and work with others. Settlement taught me to how to listen and to present myself, i.e. when performing and possibly making errors, rather than reacting or compensating, to move on. I studied and played chamber music at Settlement until age 21 when I entered graduate school at Temple University. I came to Settlement at 11 and stayed “the rest of my life.”

Q: How has your family been impacted by your love of music and your connection to Settlement?

A: When we moved to Center City many years ago, my sons chose to take music lessons at Settlement and at the Mary Louise Curtis Branch. Since then, music has been important to their lives despite career demands. One

studied guitar at Settlement, and he still plays blues and bluegrass with musicians in Atlanta. And my other son studied piano and plays guitar locally in Philadelphia. Both sang in the Central High School Choir, directed by Dr. Italo Taranta, a former Settlement faculty member. I believe music instruction should be available to all and, in my family, that tradition continues today with my grandchildren, who also study at this branch.

Q: How is the experience of coming to the Mary Louise Curtis Branch different than when you studied here?

A: Years ago, the School had the aura of a Conservatory: a refined and rarified atmosphere, and a special feeling of quiet elegance while waiting for one’s lesson. Today, the Mary Louise Curtis Branch is certainly different and also wonderful. There is an energy and openness present in the community of parents and caregivers who bring their children for lessons and engage with one another while they are here.

Q: What’s the most significant change you’ve observed at Settlement over the years?

A: Most amazing is that Settlement Music School, 106 years after its founding, continues to provide the finest quality of music instruction for people of all ages. When I began studying at Settlement, Mary Louise Curtis was its flagship branch, with a few satellite locations. Now, the school addresses the needs of six very different communities with varying demographics in the greater Philadelphia area. It’s a major force for the arts in our city, and its remarkable growth over the years adds to the magic of this amazing institution.
