CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
People: So that God may teach us his ways,
Leader: And we may walk in his paths.
People: God will judge between the nations,
Leader: People will hammer their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks,
People: Neither shall they learn war anymore.
Leader: Looking forward to that day, let us worship God.
PRAYER OF APPROACH
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us pray.
People: God the King of Glory, in whose hands are the living and the dead, we
give you thanks for all those who have laid down their lives in the service
of our country. Grant them your mercy and the light of your presence;
give us a sense of your will and purpose, that we may understand that
the work you have begun in them will be perfected through Jesus Christ,
the Prince of Peace, in whom all strife will be resolved. Amen.
*HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 262 God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand National Hymn
*CALL TO RECONCILIATION
Abraham Lincoln said, “It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their
dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions
in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and
pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and
proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord.”
*THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We have received great freedom, O Lord, by you and through the sacrifice of so
many before us. But, we have turned freedom into license. We have nurtured
hard feelings against those we see as different from us. Remind us of the price that
was paid for the freedom we enjoy. Stir within us the memory of those who gave
their last full measure of devotion so that we might cherish the freedom we have to
worship you right now in this place. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ who
truly sets us free. Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S GRACE 2 Chronicles 7:14
The Lord said, "If my people’s hearts are humble, if they pray and seek my face; if they
turn away from evil, I will not withhold my grace. I will hear their prayers and pardon
their sin." And so we believe God has done just that through the sacrifice made by
Jesus Christ upon the cross.
