distriCt governor

dear district 46 members and friends!

Welcome to our FUn and exciting educational event, our district 46 Fall Conference at the new York Laguardia Marriott!

our Conference theme is “enjoy the Journey.”

When we accomplish our goals, we feel great about it. do you remember that moment of winning? do you member how you pushed yourself to the edge beyond your own limits? But did you forget about how hard you tried? Perhaps, all are yes. When we concentrate on our goals with joy, we accomplish more than we can imagine at the beginning, since we can go further when we are having fun. After thinking back once in a while, you will be surprised how much you accomplished. Here is a trick in life - Just continue and don’t stop!

it is always good to have clear goals of one step at a time, with fun. if we enjoy that journey, we can endure a lot of hard work and achieve even higher goals with the same amount of time and effort. How we think positively in our mindset makes a lot of difference in life.

occasionally, we may encounter hardships in life. our district experienced how Hurricane sandy in new York and new Jersey, for instance, damaged our daily life physically just about 1 week before the Fall Conference 2012. But we as the district 46 family passionately managed to open our Conference, continuously helping each other with positive team spirit for our future. district 46 came back to become select distinguished at the end of the year by June 2013!

thanks to our Fall Conference Chair, raoul Yacinthe, and every one of the Conference Chairs and volunteers, including YoU, we will have an exciting day of journey in life today. the Conference team made this happen for the members and guests. thank you all!

i am grateful to the toastmasters international organization with great people around. i am also lucky to be part of new York City event, which is the most dynamic and powerful city in the world.

Please enjoy YoUr journey today towards your life journey with fun.

Best regards,Kazuo Noguchi, DTMDistrict Governor 2013-2014, District 46, Toastmasters International

Toastmasters District 46 • Fall 2013 Conference8

Lt. governor edUCAtion And trAining

Welcome to the district 46 Fall Conference! it’s an exciting time for our dis-trict as we continue to grow, adapt, stay motivated and “member-focused,” and at the same time continue to be “relevant” and “open to new ideas.” the Fall Conference is an exciting event in which we meet and bring in-spired people together to ensure that we share ideas and allow ourselves to grow.

toastmasters is a journey which you have taken to become better communicators and leaders. today is the day where you are surrounded by many other toastmaster friends who are here to share the same journey as you. it is a day filled with fun and opportunities to learn and meet other toastmaster friends.

today’s conference is a true reflection of the strength of our leaders – our Conference Chair raoul Yacinthe and all the amazing committee chairs and volunteers who have spent countless hours to make this day a fun filled day for you.

i’d like to give you an idea of what you can expect and what we hope to achieve throughout the day. First, let’s welcome 2005 World Champion of Public speaking Lance Miller, who is going to share with you how to build a “Champion Club” and later today he will also present “How to Lose your way to the World Championship”. the high points of the day are the two contests - the Humorous speech and the table topics contests, along with several educational workshops lined up for you.

the theme of the conference – “enjoy the Journey” – is a true testament of our journeys that we have taken individually and collectively.

We should all be very proud of where we are today and excited about where we are headed.

Before i close, i’d like to thank each of you for attending the conference and bringing your expertise to our gathering and “enjoying this Journey” together.

You, as organization members and leaders, have the vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and the experi-ence to help us pave our way into the future. You are truly our greatest asset, today and tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. throughout this conference, i ask you to stay engaged, have fun, meet as many toastmaster friends as you can, and specially take time to say “hello” to our “First timers,” make them feel home, and learn from your fellow toastmasters.

My personal respect and thanks go out to all of you.

Warm Regards,Neerja Purang, DTMLt. Governor Education & Training, District 46

ConFerenCe CHAir

Welcome,

on behalf of district 46, i welcome you with open arms and a warm embrace to the Fall 2013 conference. Your education, satisfaction and enjoyment are at the top of our priorities. We hope that you especially enjoy your journey, today of all days, on this november 23rd of the year 2013.

one of the most common words uttered in toastmaster circles is “journey” when referring to the time period that you are spending in the toastmasters culture and environment. Most of us take that journey seriously because it is, and could be, a lifelong wish to become a better communicator and leader. the desire to improve your communication and leadership skills can be daunting, if not overwhelming at times. if you are just starting your journey, brace yourself and take heart because it will not be always easy, but so rewarding and hopefully enjoyable. if you started your journey a while ago and may have forgotten the trials and trepidations of the journey, then take heart, because you are in the midst of an enjoyable journey.

the one thing that may distinguish your journey and make it unique is the approach. the approach is: to be true to yourself and give it all that you have and to the best of your abilities. Always keep in mind that toast-masters is a journey that will be more fulfilling and rewarding if you intend to “enjoy the Journey”. neverthe-less, remember that toastmasters is “Where Leaders Are Made.”

Respectfully yours,Raoul YacintheFall 2013 Conference Chair

JUDGING CRITERIA

speech development is the way the speaker puts ideas together so the audience can understand them. the table topics response is structured around a purpose, and this structure must include an opening, body and conclusion. the response is supported by relevant examples and illustrations, facts and figures if appropriate, and is delivered smoothly.

effectiveness is your subjective judgement of how the response came across. Were you able to deter-mine the speaker’s purpose? did the speech relate directly to the given question or topic? Was the response clearly and logically presented?

Physical presentation of the response carries part of the responsibility for effective communication. the speaker’s appearance should reinforce his or her response. Body language should support points through gestures, expressions, and body position-ing.

voice is the sound that carries the message. it should be flexible, moving from one pitch level to another for emphasis, and should have a variety of rate and volume. A good voice can be clearly heard and the words easily understood.

Language refers to the choice of words that relate to the understanding of thoughts and should fit the occasion precisely. Proper use of grammar and correct punctuation will show that the speaker is the master of the words being used.

HUMoroUs sPeeCH Contest

JUDGING CRITERIA sPeeCH deveLoPMent is the way the speaker puts ideas together so the audience can understand them. the speech is structured around a purpose or theme, and the structure must include an opening, body and conclusion. A good humorous speech immediately engages the audience’s attention and then builds to a significant conclusion; it is not a series of jokes or a monologue.

eFFeCtiveness refers to your subjective judgment of how the speech came across. What was the purpose or theme of the speech? did the speech relate directly to that purpose or theme? Was humor used effectively?

sPeeCH vALUe justifies the act of speaking. the speaker has a responsibility to say something meaning-ful and original to the audience, even in a humorous speech. the ideas should be important, even though they are presented humorously.

AUdienCe resPonse reflects the audience’s reac-tion to the speech. did the speech hold the audience’s interest? did people understand and laugh at the hu-mor? PHYsiCAL presentation of a speech carries part of the responsibility for effective communication. the speaker’s appearance should reinforce the speech. Body language should support points through gestures, expressions and body positioning.

voiCe is the sound that carries the message. it should be flexible, moving from one pitch level to another for emphasis, and should have a variety of rate and vol-ume. A good voice can be clearly heard and the words easily understood.

MAnner is the indirect revelation of the speaker’s real self as the speech is delivered. the speaker should speak with enthusiasm and assurance, showing inter-est in the audience and confidence in their reactions.

APProPriAteness of language refers to the choice of words that relate to the speech purpose and to the particular audience hearing the speech. Language should promote clear understanding of thoughts, should fit the occasion and should be in good taste.

CorreCtness of language ensures that attention will be directed toward what the speaker says, not how it is said. Proper use of grammar and correct pronun-ciation will show that the speaker is the master of the words being used.

I LEARNED TO LOOK COMFORTABLE AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT MY LEADERSHIP SKILLS. YOU HAVE HONORED ME WITH YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT. BEING AN AREA GOVERNOR WAS A REWARDING EXPERIENCE, TEACHING ME ABOUT BUILDING AND MAINTAINING RELATIONSHIPS.
