WELLINGTON AFC Club History

Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members. The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level. The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year. Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and have been promoted to Division Two for the new season. The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but, with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club. This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year. During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.

We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site. Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)

MATCH REPORT – SATURDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER TOOLSTATION WESTERN LEAGUE – PREMIER DIVISION

WESTBURY UTD 5 0 WELLINGTON

Wellington suffered their third successive defeat as they were beaten in Wiltshire to remain bottom of the table. Manager Clive Jones was again without a string of key players through injury and unavailability, which is undoubtedly having an effect on his side’s disappointing start to the season. Westbury threatened from the start and went ahead after only eight minutes when the ball was played to Sam Jordan, who cleverly cut inside before shooting low past keeper Tom Welch. Six minutes later it was 2-0 as Welch failed to deal with a long through ball and Jordan pounced to roll the ball into an empty net. And Wellington’s nightmare start was complete after 18 minutes as they fell further behind when Jordan broke forward, twisted and turned before shooting home to complete a quick-fire hat-trick. The shellshocked visitors attempted to claw their way back into the game but their cause was definitely not helped four minutes from the break. Skipper Sam Bryant was harshly judged to have fouled Ricky Hulbert and Jason Henley dispatched the resulting penalty to make it 4-0. That left Wellington with a mountain to climb in the second half and they were unlucky to not reduce the arrears with both Joe Wylie and Jack Bryant seeing shots come back off the post. To rub salt into their wounds, they conceded a fifth goal after 69 minutes when Hulbert raced clear to shoot low past Welch. Wellington: Tom Welch, Josh Pearson, Tom Hawkings, Sam Bryant, Lewis Pocock, Jack Bryant, Glen Wright, Mitch Woodgate, Joe Wylie, Josh Wadham, Conor Bryant. Substitutes: Connor Pengelly, Ollie Holman and Paolo Borges (all used). Attendance: 61.

TONIGHT’S VISITORS TAVISTOCK

We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Tavistock for their first visit to the Playing Field for this evenings Toolstation Western League Premier Division game. Adhoc football, a cross between rugby union and soccer and perhaps a few other games to boot, took place between Plymouth and Tavistock sides from the mid-1870s, but it took a letter in the Tavistock Gazette from scribes under the pseudonym of “Wei/wisher” and “Halfback”, to attract the attentions of two local businessmen. The club was thus founded on September 8th, 1888, the foundation year of the Devon County FA, following a meeting at the Guildhall where a committee was elected. The old Tavistock Grammar School playing field in Russell Street hosted the newly formed club and the first match against the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry resulted in a 1–0 victory. The first AGM held at the old Temperance Hotel, now the Ordulph Arms, proudly recorded a first season playing record of Won 13, Lost 3 Drawn 1. By 1890 the club adopted a strip of blue and old gold and formed a second team, moving two years later to Green Lane, Torlands. Going from strength to strength the team won the league and were cup runners up in 1900-1901. During the early part of the century the club had a number of homes and it is believed that in 1913 the entire Tavistock team was selected to represent the County. During the period of 1914-1918 structured football was abandoned. Eventually there were at least three other clubs in the town, Tavistock Comrades, Bannawell Blues United and Tavistock West End. Amalgamation in 1939 produced the familiar colours of red and black. The years 1920 to 1930 were successful times with excellent results in the league, Bedford Cup and Senior Devon Cup. Sadly the next decade saw a decline in both results and attendance. Play ceased at the end of the 1931-32 season due to debt. Jumble sales and whist drives were held to ease the financial situation and football resumed once more in 1937. The onset of World War II put things on hold until 1945 when the Lambs joined the Plymouth Combination League First Division. In 1947 the Club President Herbert Thomas Langsford purchased the current ground, Langsford Park, for the Club. In 1952 Tavistock joined the South Western League but were forced to withdraw in 1961 due to financial embarrassment until re-joining in 1968. The Club has been the birthplace of many players going on to enjoy professional pay-days in the Football League including Mike Trebilcock, perhaps the most newsworthy footballer to have played for Tavistock who scored two of the three goals in the 1966 Cup Final in Everton’s 3–2 win over Sheffield Wednesday. The Club won the Devon Premier Cup in season 2001-02 and repeated this success in season 2006-07, by beating Upton Athletic by six goals to nil, creating a record winning margin in the final of this competition. In season 2005-06, the Club reached the last thirty-two in the FA Vase,

Page 11: WELCOME TO THE PLAYING FIELD - Wellington A.F.C....2019/10/02  · seeing shots come back off the post. To rub salt into their wounds, they conceded a To rub salt into their wounds,

going out to Pickering Town in a very close encounter. The Club also entered the FA Cup for the first time since 1953-54. Perhaps the saddest entry in this brief history of football in Tavistock is the fire of 3rd February 2011, which all but saw the complete destruction of the old changing rooms and the Red & Black Clubhouse, since then a rebuilding programme has seen the club rise from the ashes and achieve great things by becoming the SWPL East Divisions Champions in 2014/15 and then SWPL Premier Division Champions in 2016/17. Tavistock AFC also made SWPL history the following year by becoming the first club to win both the SWPL Charity Vase and Bowl. Success has continued and after being runners up to Plymouth Parkway in the SWPL Premier Division for the 2017-18 season the Lambs won the league on the last day of the 2018/19 season, beating Plymouth Argyle to gain promotion to the Toolstation Western League. We can say that football is very much alive in Tavistock!

MACRON DEVON & EXETER LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

WELLINGTON RESERVES 5 0 BOW ATHLETIC

Following the disappointment of the previous week’s poor away showing, the Reserves had an opportunity to bounce back with their long-awaited first home game of the season. In front of an impressive and supportive home crowd, they came out fired up and full of running. As with the previous week, their efforts were rewarded early when home debutant Liam Thorne netted from a tight angle. Tom Davies fed the ball into Ollie Nott who in turn played a slide rule pass perfectly for Thorne to run on to. Without breaking his stride, he cooly hit a low right foot cross across and past the keeper just inside the far post. The away side rallied, but were restricted to long-range shots, corners and crosses which rarely trouble Rob Hall in the sticks. By comparison, Wellington looked dangerous when attacking. Their wide players were particularly well used and often found space. Wellington's second came on 19 minutes. An obvious and clearcut handball led to a penalty award. Thorne's spot kick was saved, but clinically followed up by the evergreen Darren Mace, smashing a hip-high half-volley high into the net. Wellington continued to press and, deservedly, two became three on 33 minutes. After moving the ball wide left, Mace turned the full back inside out and got to the byline. He delivered an almost undefendable cross for the onrushing Aaron Hawkings to smash home from close range. Half time arrived with Wellington deservedly 3-0 to the good. Playing up the slope for the second half, the home side continued where they left off as good tempo and pressing kept their visitors caged and frustrated. The fourth came on 56 minutes. A quick break saw the tireless Ash Saunders break clear on the right. He fed an inch-perfect crossfield pass to strike partner Thorne. He cleverly took the ball inside the last defender with his first touch before curling a precise right foot finish beyond the reach of the travelling keeper. With the game in the bag, Wellington introduced 17-year-old Robbie Broomhead into midfield for Dave Darch. Luke Woodgate replaced the tiring Thorne and the impressive Wes Poulsom came on for his wounded cousin Dan Woodgate. The flow of the game continued to favour the home side with Fleet, Davies and Owen stifling any attacks that came their way. The fifth was yet another decent team goal. A couple of passes released skipper Mark Owen down the right. He drew the full-back out before feeding the speedy overlap of Poulsom. On gathering the ball, the

youngster looked up and delivered a delightful low cross into the path of Saunders who deservedly finished from close range to complete the scoring. Overall this was a marked improvement on the previous week’s display. The unity and desire to work hard on and off the ball was the most satisfying aspect of this performance. Better communication and pass selection were also evident. Hopefully they will further improve on this performance and show what the management team believe they are capable of in the coming weeks.

INVEST SOUTHWEST – TAUNTON SATURDAY LEAGUE SEWARD CUP

NORTH PETHERTON RESERVES 1 2 WELLINGTON A

Welly took a break from league action to begin their Seward Cup campaign against a North Petherton side who had also begun their season unbeaten. Fielding a side missing regulars Liam Thorne and, for the first time, Tenny Harlow, this was an opportunity for places to be nailed down and the Tangerine Army made the perfect start when Jordan Sellick drilled a shot across the keeper into the bottom right corner. In what would prove to be an even game, Wellington battled hard to control the game and move the ball through a packed midfield as well as using width to pull the Petherton defence. Fouls began to be drawn from attacking pressure and Welly grabbed a second goal when Tom Scarlett took advantage after a deflection guided his free kick past the Petherton goalkeeper. Welly led 2-0 at the break. In the second half, it soon became clear the priority was ensuring victory against a Petherton side which refused to give up. Rotating the front three almost provided a third goal with new energy, but with the best chance, Aaron Merry’s chipped effort was more suited to the Rugby World Cup, sailing over the crossbar. Then, in a blink, the game changed with Petherton grabbing a goal back with ten minutes left. It was deserved, but Welly were the better side on the night and were able to hold on to gain safe passage to play Nether Stowey in the quarter-finals.
