The past five weeks have been busy times for the Wom-en’s Club of Ocean Pines. We met on May 4 and presented scholarships to three students and community donations to six organizations that benefit Ocean Pines residents. For 2016-2017, we were able to give $3,900 back to the community

We immediately began fundraising for 2017-2018 by hold-ing a Card & Game Party on May 11, an Avon fundraiser, our wine tasting luncheon on June 1, and a bake sale to be held on June 3 at the Ocean Pines Farmers’ Market in White Horse Park. We thank our women for their time and talents over the past year and wish them a great summer. Our next meeting will be held Thursday, September 7, at 10am-12 noon at the Ocean Pines Community Center.

The Bench is off and running at the 142nd Preakness held on May 20. Featured here in the Maryland State tent is resident Diane McGraw, the vice chair of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission.

From the General Manager’s Desk:

cause mass hysteria (threatens to file a lien on your home if not corrected), so please respond to the initial contact by our office prior to the “demand letters.”

2016 Audit – The Budget and Finance Committee has re-ported upon the 2016 Audit work in their May 31st Report to the Board. You can find this report by logging into The Parke website. It is located under the Board of Directors tab “Board Packets – May 31, 2017.” The most important note to make of the audit is the fact that the Association has depleted the Prior Year Surplus funds through the 2016 year, primarily due to the Dehumidifier Replacement Project and the water leak that led to the discovery of mold between the men’s and ladies’ locker room showers. What does this mean to you? Higher monthly assess-ments in 2018 and beyond. This is something that the pre-vious Boards have discussed, presented and wrote about dur-ing the budget working sessions and approvals. How much? Well, if you take the total amount of expenses budgeted for 2016 ($1,271,153.81) and reduce it by the newsletter income ($8,000.00), you get the total amount of expenses that the As-sociation spends each year ($1,263,153.81), or $209.27 per month per owner. So why are you paying only $195? Prior Year’s Surplus Income ($60,733) and Initial Capital Contributions ($23,000) paid at the time of each new settle-ment help pay down your assessments. Now that the Prior Year’s Surplus Income (which cut your monthly assessment by $10.06) is depleted, only Capital Contributions will apply towards your assessments. Budget and Finance will begin looking at the budget to see where cuts can come in before the normal start of the 2018 Budget Season. You, too, can look over the details of the budget. Log into the website, select the Financials Tab, Budget and look at the 2017 Budget Detail Report. It includes not only the budget, but a description and history of all income and expense items in detail. As I mentioned before, please stay tuned to The Parke website for updates and more announcements by logging into www.parkehappenings.com. Don’t have a login? Contact Vicki Magin at [email protected] or 410-208-4994.

It’s June in The Parke! We have new Board members, a new Board president, and summer weather! I hope that each of you can get out soon and get your toes in the warm sand and sun on your (sunscreen covered) skin and many times over. I have a few important announcements to share with you this month. Please stay tuned to The Parke website for more updates. If you are not receiving the emails from our office, please contact Vicki to set you up on our website so that you do not miss out on these important messages! Vicki –[email protected].

Gutter and Downspout Cleaning – Begins June 12th, weather permitting. This process takes about two weeks to complete all of the houses in The Parke. I will send out an update the week prior to the start and throughout as the contractor moves through the community. Remember – if you have any type of gutter guards, helmets or mesh – the contractor will only “brush” off the tops and run water through your downspouts; they will not remove any debris within the covered gutter. Homeowners Association Fees – Please note Tom Piatti’s article in the May Bench. If you are not paying your monthly assessments with the Associa Direct Debit, please log into your Parke account through the Associa website to insure that all of your fees are paid in full. Refer to Tom’s article for in-structions. For those who are late or have missed payments, our office will begin contacting you to obtain these payments. After two months of these contacts, any unresolved issues will be turned over to the Associa’s collection department. This means that a form letter, called a “demand letter,” will be sent on the 16th of each month to any account that has a balance due. These letters are very “demanding” and may

Communications Advisory Committee By Pat Addy, Chair

Committee ReportsBudget and Finance Committee By Diane McGraw, Chair

Design Review Committee By Linda Olsen, Chair

I was approached at a Parke Happy Hour that residents are hearing that at May 18’s Budget and Finance meeting our discussions led to a substantial in-crease for the next budget year. While we did talk about the probable need for a significant increase in 2018, due to the dwindling prior-year surpluses, wedecided we have much work to do in the months ahead: (1) review the reserve study items earmarked for completion in this fiscal year; (2) review budgeted expenses between now and the end of 2017 to determine if any expenses can be rec-ommended for reduction; (3) review bad debt and past-due assessment payments by owners; and (4) devise a three-year projection of future assessments. Also, at our May 18 meeting, the review of the April’s fi-nancial was completed, two requests for funds from the Oper-ations Committee was concurred upon, the review of the RFP for Independent Auditor is nearing completion, and the draft timeline for preparation of the 2018 budget was approved by the Committee and will be going forth to the Board for their review and acceptance. Next month’s column will give owners pertinent dates of the 2018 budget working sessions with an invitation to assist in the process. Please contact the Chair if you are interested in being a steward of the Parke’s financials. Our next meeting is Thursday, June 22, at 9:30am and is open to all residents.

The fiscal year of 2016-2017 (June - May) has ended and CAC would like to present its annual report. CAC has five members plus one chair and three alter-nates. Our areas of responsibility include: Clubhouse library, Mail Pavilion bulletin boards, The Parke Directory, The Parke Bench, The Parke website and forum, monthly Java speakers, community surveys, and the Welcome Subcommittee. In 2017 we completed and distributed the latest resident directory. If you have not picked it up, please go to the Club-house during regular business hours to get your copy. One per household, please! Our second project was to replace the current Parke Hap-penings website, making it available for residents to use with their smart phones and I pads. We are hopeful that the new site will encourage residents to use it on a more regular basis. The site will always need to be monitored and updates will be made.

We made a significant start on this project with the sup-port of a group of 20 residents who had various levels of ex-perience: new users, those who are technical, and those who are knowledgeable about our governing documents. We are almost there. Look for the ice cream social event, open to all residents, to preview the website. Come share a SWEET and a TREAT while learning about our new and improved website. We hope you have enjoyed this past year’s Java speakers. We encourage all to attend and welcome your suggestions for topics and presenters. A list of speakers over the past year is available in the Mail Pavilion and the Clubhouse for you to view.

Covenants Committee By Cindy Ostrowski, Chair

The Covenants Committee approved a DRAFT revision of the HOA Activi-ties and Clubhouse Usage Policy to be recommended to the Board at the May 31 meeting. At that Board meeting, Jerry Gietka will provide a presentation regarding the revision process and the edits which address the issues referred to Cov-enants by the Board. The presentation will also address defi-nitions of other commonly used terms which required clarity as the policy was reviewed. Some of the issues addressed in-clude definitions of activities and events as well as numbers of guests, liability insurance for activities led by Parke residents, and permission for use of photos. Dawn Johnson has been elected to the Board and the Cov-enants Committee will need another member. In addition, my term as chair ends on May 31. Donna McCracken has agreed to serve as chair beginning in June. The next meeting of the Committee is scheduled for Wednes-day, June 7, at 9:30am. Parke residents are always welcome!

It is June already and we are closing in on our annual mold inspection. Don’t be caught moldy. Don’t wait for us to send you a letter requesting that you wash your house. Do it now and be squeaky clean by the first week of July when we make our first round of inspec-tions. We inspect in morning light when the dew is still on the siding. We have another look when the sun is getting low in the sky and the shadows can sometimes fool us. And we look

on sunny days, cloudy days, rainy days, in all kinds of condi-tions. We have several little peeks on several different days before we are satisfied that we have done a good and fair job of assessing each and every house, and then we make our list of offenders. Whew, it’s a process. After our moldy list is assembled, letters are sent out re-minding you that you are now required to wash and, after 30 days, we do a second inspection. This time we only look at the homes on the list but, again, we make several trips to check on the situation. This process goes on two more times, whittling down the number of offenders until hopefully we reach the magic number of “0” moldy homes. Unfortunately, if after our last round we still happen to have offenders, we turn the information over to the Covenants Committee to be dealt with accordingly. As I said last month in this very same place, help save the HOA some money by washing before we inspect. If we send you a “remember you need to wash” letter, it costs the HOA envelopes, paper, stamps, and man hours (or in our case, woman hours as AGM Barbara does all of our administrative DRC work). So, save us time and save the HOA some money by wash-ing now. June is a great month to clean up your home for the year so you can sit back, admire your clean home, and enjoy your company that comes for their summer visit.

During the Operations Committee meeting held on May 9, multiple projects were reviewed and addressed. I thought this month that I would address them in-dividually:

1.) Treadmill Elimination – One of our original treadmills is nearing the end of its expected lifecycle and will require expensive updating. During the Fitness Center Update Proj-ect, this subject was addressed and it was determined that we would replace the aging treadmill with a new, senior- oriented, exercise bike. Estimates are being obtained and the proposal will be forwarded to the Board for approval.

2.) Broken Mail Box in Mail Pavilion – Repair or replacement estimates are being obtained.

3.) Annapolis Pier Crab Pot Registry – The 2017 Crab Pot Registration form is now present in the signup book located in the library. As a reminder, you must register to place a crab pot at the Annapolis Pier and only two crab pots, at one time, will be allowed. Additionally, your name and address must be attached to your crab pot. Non-compliance crab pots will be removed from the water. 4.) Cape May Pond Project – The Committee approved por-tions of the Project pertaining to neighboring rain gutter burial, relocation of the inlet swale pipe, and installation of four Coir Logs along pond banks that reflect severe erosion. The lower-ing of the drainage rock wall is awaiting further investigation and approval from the County.

One point of discussion during our meeting involved that of the utility easements that most Parke property owners are af-fected by. Two of our residents are dealing with tree and fence removal due to required electrical work within an easement on their property…at significant cost to the property owner. The best “rule of thumb” is to leave the utility easement area in its natural state.

Well, we’re into beach season. More traf-fic, more company and sunny days on the wa-ter, on the beach or at the pool. Memorial Day is behind us and we look forward to the picnic, ball game and fireworks at Perdue Sta-dium on June 24. Space is limited, so sign up soon. Thanks Marcia Balestri for your great bird migration talk and field trip you arranged to DuPont Nature Center. Plans are under way for another pig roast and a crab feast. The Programs Committee is also planning a Moore appre-ciation event for our landscaping crew. This event will take place on July 11. June 15 is the signup deadline for the Williamsburg trip on December 6-8. Flyers and the signup sheet are available in the Clubhouse.

Red Hats Activities

443-373-4539410-390-5528

Crimson Parkettes On Tuesday, May 9, the Crimson Parkettes enjoyed a luncheon at the Southgate Grill. There were 14 sisters who enjoyed a wonderful lunch. Food was plentiful and delicious. The server was attentive, and a good time was had by all.

Scarlett O’Hatters On May 18, the Scarlett O’Hatters met for lunch at the Blacksmith Bar and Restaurant in Berlin. There were 14 of us there to enjoy the food and camaraderie.

Red cHatters The Red cHatters traveled to Pocomoke to tour the historic Costen House Museum, a lovely home built shortly after the end of the Civil War. After that, they were off to visit The Vault and purchase a few jewelry items. Finally, it was lunch time and they headed to the Riverside Grille to enjoy lunch and a lovely view of the river.

Red Hattitudes The Red Hattitudes spent a fun day for our May event beginning with indoor mini-golf in Ocean City. Fran Pilarski, our newest member, planned our day and provided refreshments and prizes for our accomplish-ments (and lowest score!). Then we all headed to the Dunes Manor for tea traveling with all of the classic cars which were in OC as well.

This is the second of a series of articles to keep your devices and data safe and secure.

1. Set a strong password and use a password manager. A secure password can stop a hacker trying to gain access to your PC or your online account. Pick something memora-ble, but also complicated and unique. But using that password for multiple accounts, no matter how strong it can be, can open you up to other attacks. If one account is breached, that means others could be too. Using a password manager like LastPass can help eliminate passwords that you reuse. Also, then you need to remember only ONE password. Secure passwords are a nightmare. To date, most people have been taught to come up with bizarre combinations of characters to keep their information safe. This also means that most people also stick to the old idea that you just need to make a password eight characters long. But these days, your PC can test every combination of an eight-character password in just 13 minutes! By making your password long, you make it much more secure, and you can also find better ways to make it easy to remember. Think of a couple of words that you will never

forget, but not names or personal references. Something that amuses you, something fun or something you like that isn’t obvious. And make sure the words have nothing to do with each other. Like FlowerpotBaseball or SolarMeltHamster. Give each word a capital letter, and stick a symbol or num-ber between the words and at the end. For a computer to crack Flowerpot-Baseball99, which is 20 characters long, it would take billions of years. But it’s easy to remember! Play with the theory by using three or more shorter words, or putting symbols or numbers in different places. Don’t be too formulaic in your thinking. Just make it long, and make it weird, and you’re heading in the right direction towards keep-ing your secure stuff a lot more secure.

2. Set up Two-Factor Authentication on your online ac-counts.

Two-factor authentication works by sending a second password or code to a device you own and trust, like your cellphone. Setting it up bolsters your security considerably and makes it far more difficult for someone to access your account. Most online accounts now support two-factor au-thentication, including Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo and others. It takes only a few minutes to set up. You can visit these sites for instructions to set up Two-Factor Authentication.

If you want to receive my occasional security bulletins and tips, send an e-mail to me and I will add you to my distribu-tion list. Also, this column is posted to the Forum on the Parke Happenings website, as well as some additional articles and security bulletins.

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. --Francis of Assisi

Quick TipsSafety Tips The smallest room in your home, your bathroom, can have some unexpected dangers. In fact, fire is one of the hazards you need to consider when evaluating whether your bathroom is safe. To prevent fires, be sure to never leave a candle burn-ing unattended. Candles should be placed on a heat-resistant surface and should be a safe distance from curtains or towels. Hair dryers and curling irons should always be unplugged af-ter each use to ensure they are completely off. This also will prevent them from accidentally turning on if they fall off the counter when you are out of the room.

When traveling or having guests, you may find that it is convenient to use an air mattress. While these mattresses are great for most people, they are unsafe for infants. These sur-faces are too soft for use with sleeping infants. The U.S. Con-sumer Product Safety Commission has reported several tragic deaths, mostly of infants younger than eight months of age who were placed on air mattresses to sleep. These babies were either placed face down or fell into gaps between the mattress and a wall or adjacent furniture. The softness of the surface on these air mattresses does not allow young babies to maintain a clear airway. To be safe, never place a child younger than one on an air mattress to sleep.

There is no charm equal to tenderness of heart. --Jane Austen

Travel Tip When you travel by plane, consider that what you wear can make your trip easier and more comfortable. Flip-flops might not give you enough stability in the event of an emer-gency, but sturdy slip-on shoes make getting through security easier. A short sleeve shirt and a light sweater or jacket allows you to feel comfortable in any cabin temperature. If you are going to be on a long flight, an eye mask and some ear plugs can come in handy. Finally, to make bathroom breaks easier, consider wearing elastic waist pants to help navigate the small lavatories.

Health MattersDo You Have High Blood Pressure? High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer.” It can lead to a heart attack, stroke or even death if left untreated. High blood pressure can exist for years without noticeable signs or discomfort. High blood pressure also plays a role in senile dementia. Symptoms of high blood pressure are the following:

• Dizziness • Fatigue • Low exercise tolerance • Nausea • Loss of consciousness • Episodes of confusion • Tightness, pressure, or pain in the chest or arms

Most residents in The Parke know by now whether or not they have high blood pressure. Your doctor has probably pre-scribed medicine to control it. Do you comply with your doc-tor’s instructions? Do you take your medicine as prescribed? You should if you want to avoid a stroke or heart attack. The Parke provides the opportunity for blood pressure monitoring. Take advantage of this free and convenient ser-vice. Call Vicki at the Clubhouse front desk if you have any questions. Screenings are scheduled for the 1st and 4th Tues-days of each month at 10am.

On The Lighter SideJust before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, ‘How old was your husband?’‘98,’ she replied, ‘Two years older than me.’ ‘So you’re 96,’ the undertaker commented. She responded, ‘Hardly worth going home, is it?’ Reporters interviewed a 104-year-old woman. ‘And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?’ the reporter asked. ‘No peer pressure.’

I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair. She turned to me and asked, ‘Are you having it catered’? And that, my friend, is the sad definition of ‘OLD’!

My memory’s not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory’s not as sharp as it used to be.

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat until the wrinkles fill out.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exer-cising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotard on, the class was over.

THE SENILITY PRAYER: Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Did You Know: ChickensMay 4th is International Respect for Chickens Day.

You can literally hypnotize a chicken by holding it and draw-ing a line in the dirt over and over. The chicken will stay still right there as long as you do this.

Beijing, China, has the world’s largest Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.

Chickens take about six to eight weeks to grow to broiler size. Farmers produce five or six flocks per year.

A female chicken under one year of age is called a pullet. A broody hen is a chicken who wants to hatch an egg.

Chickens store grit in their gizzard to help them chew their food.

A group of chickens must include at least three chickens to be considered a flock.

The chicken is the closest living relative to the T-Rex.

The most eggs laid by a chicken in one day is seven.

If you make chickens think it’s daylight, even at night, they’ll lay eggs that are bigger with harder shells.

It appears that we have gotten far afield from the original question as to whether there is life elsewhere in the universe, but not really. Earlier it was suggested that because there were so many likely earth-type planets in the universe, it is almost certain that there is life elsewhere –but intelligent life is an-other matter altogether. In order to have intelligent life, there must be multicellular organisms. If earth is any measure of the likelihood of this oc-curring elsewhere, the chances are slim but certainly not zero. And then even when cells capable of generating multicellular creatures evolved here on earth, it took perhaps another billion years before multicellularism appeared. It was not until some 3 billion years after the appearance of life here that animals appeared. And then it took another half billion years until “in-telligence,” as we would recognize, emerged. All in all, the stories coming out of Star Trek are fanci-ful at best. As to UFO’s, forget about the intelligent life ques-tion; think about how many thousands of years it would take to travel the vast distances of space to arrive here from star sys-tems many light years away (there are nearly 6 trillion miles per light year). For all practical purposes, we with human-like intelligence are alone in the universe. Physicists took up the question of the existence of intel-ligent life elsewhere in the universe over 50 years ago, and estimates have been recently revised (See http://www.csmoni-tor.com/Science/2016/0501/Probability-we-re-the-only-intel-ligent-life-in-cosmos-Really-low-say-astronomers). However, in no place that I can find have they ever viewed the question from a biological perspective. Nonetheless, they have con-cluded that intelligent life may well be out there, but in agree-ment with what I write above, it seems unlikely that we will ever be able to have direct contact with them.

Note: Past columns are posted in the Forum that can be accessed on ParkeHappenings.

The question still to be addressed is how the union of a bacterium with an archaea gave rise to the eukaryotic cell and what this might tell us about life elsewhere in the universe. We know little about the progression of events from the time of the first union to the full development of the eukaryotic cell, but it must have taken many millions of years. Basically what needed to take place in this novel ancient cell was for the bacterium to lose its cell wall that was eventually replaced by a membrane. In the process, the bacterium lost most of its genes and lost its ability to be a free-living organism –it was transformed into a membrane-encased structure (a plasmid) that we know as mitochondria. The original bacterium started out with about 4000 genes, but today, mitochondria have at most, only a few dozen genes. Human mitochondria have only 37 genes, but each of our cells contains thousands of these tiny mitochondria whose function is to provide the energy to drive the chemical reactions of life. Many of the genes lost in the conversion of the bacterium to mitochondria were actually transferred to the nuclear ge-nome of the eukaryotic cell where they encode proteins need-ed for the mitochondria to function. And mitochondrial func-tion is critical for the life of the eukaryotic cell since it is the mitochondria that power the cells. The energy generated by respiration in eukaryotic cells is an order of magnitude higher than what prokaryotic cells can produce. In large measure, the high efficiency with which eukaryotic cells produce energy to drive their biological reactions is responsible for the success of eukaryotic organisms. What the many mitochondria in each of our cells are ca-pable of doing, through respiration, is to combine the oxygen in the air with our food -a kind of slow burning. But unlike the burning of paper or fossil fuels, most of the energy released by respiration is captured in the form of energy-rich molecules called ATP. These ATP’s then are used to drive nearly all of the reactions of life.
