Pastoral

Care

Sometimes it takes more than a parka or a blanket to keep another person warm. Sometimes it takes the presence of a caring Christian friend. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God’s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to those who are

hurting? Consider serving as a Stephen Minister. For more information, please contact Deacon Ed at 225-6414.

"The Spirit of God is on me. He anointed me to bring Good News to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted and to free the oppressed" (Is. 61:1). In the months prior to ordination to the diaconate back in 2015 I was charged, along with the other candidates, by the formation team, to come up with a ministry of service diocesan wide, along with our ministry at the parish level. In my prayer to the Holy Spirit, a “Ministry of Healing” kept coming into my heart. Shortly before ordination, Bishop Pates assigned me to work with Fr. David Fleming in his ministry of spiritual deliverance and healing that Fr. Fleming was developing. When asked what we should call this work, the bishop thought for a moment and said we should call it, “A Ministry of Healing”. It was pretty clear the Holy Spirit was at work. Since my ordination to the diaconate, I have strived to bring this “Ministry of Healing” to Sacred Heart as a deacon and as pastoral care minister. A ministry of healing is a broad ministry that encompasses the physical, emotional, and spiritual healing needs of the parish. One initiative to provide healing for the people of our parish is a healing service within Eucharistic Benediction. For many years, we have had adoration on the first Tuesday of the month. During the seasons of Advent and Lent, we have had it every Tuesday. Below is a short explanation of what adoration is all about along with thoughts on healing. Exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is not only a very old devotion in our Church, but one that highlights the fundamental mystery of the Holy Eucharist – that our Lord is truly present, body and blood, soul and divinity in the Blessed Sacrament. The ritual for exposition and benediction basically follows this ritual: The priest/deacon places the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance on the altar for adoration. During the period of adoration, the faithful pray quietly to foster a deeper spiritual communion with the Lord. However, the adoration period should also include prayers, such as a novena or Liturgy of the Hours, and readings from Sacred Scripture accompanied perhaps by a homily or exhortation to increase the understanding of the Eucharistic mystery. At the end of the period of adoration, the priest/deacon blesses the congregation with the Blessed Sacrament, making the sign of the cross. After the blessing, the priest/deacon reposes the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. Healing is a pillar of Christian dogma and has always been part of the lived experience of the Church. Although corrupted by some who would attempt to make a dollar through what the Scriptures call "Balaam's error" (Jude 1:11), true faith healing, like exorcism, is sanctioned by the Church. It is to be done in the proper forum and in fidelity to the Church.

In the Scriptures, Jesus Christ cured the sick, sometimes with the laying on of hands. The gospels encourage priests to go out and anoint the sick with oil. St. Paul lists healing as a spiritual gift. Faith healing has been practiced quietly and faithfully by Catholic priests throughout her history. In fact, every Sacramental Anointing of the Sick is a Prayer for Healing, including the possibility of physical healing. The Vatican has not only endorsed faith healing, but Pope Benedict actually called on those who have the gift of healing to share it in the Instruction on Prayers for Healing released by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Catechism speaks of healing: "In the sacraments Christ continues to 'touch' us in order to heal us" (CCC, 1504). "The Holy Spirit gives to some a special charism of healing so as to make manifest the power of the grace of the risen Lord" (CCC 1508). The Catholic tradition tends to be more sacramental, very earthly and human, gentle, quiet. We pray for healing in a quiet way. This is mostly inner healing for emotional burdens. And when people are healed of those, often physical healings can occur, too. Our prayers are quiet and reverent, focused on the spiritual interior with a specific emphasis on reconciliation and forgiveness, and Eucharist-centered. They include Adoration and a blessing. Beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 3 (first week of Advent) we will have a healing service within Eucharistic Benediction. We will begin our service at 6:15 p.m. and will be done at 7:00 p.m. Within our service, people will be invited to come up to be prayed over. I want to stress that this service is not the anointing of the sick. That is a sacrament that only a priest or bishop can administer. If you desire an anointing please contact the parish office. Our service is an opportunity for parishioners to come together to worship our Lord under His Eucharistic presence and to pray for each other for any type of healing w e m ay need. “Inspire us to use our gifts and talents to become a parish of Active Apostles on fire for Jesus Christ. May we be empowered by your Holy Spirit to share Your love with others.” Our healing service is an attempt to put into practice our prayer for Divine Renovation here at Sacred Heart. If you have any questions please contact me. May God bless all of us here at Sacred Heart with His healing power. ~Deacon Ed

ENJOY THE RIDE By Debbie Chalik

A while back I was given the task of collecting my 3-year-old grandson from daycare. This is one of my favorite activities, and as it turned out, this was a great day in 3-year-old world. As I pulled out of the daycare parking lot, my grandson laughed out loud and said, “Nana, you are a CRAAAAZY DRIVER! It was as if he was on a wild roller coaster ride, yet he was buckled into the back seat of my Nissan. To add to the adventure, we saw a school bus (yellow), a fire truck (red), and a police car with the lights flashing. It was a great 10-block ride. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we each appreciated our world like a 3-year-old? If we laughed when we went around the corner, ate a cookie at the grocery store, and pretended that we were at the ice cream store (which was actually a corner of the basement), how could we ever be unhappy!

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I take everyday life way too seriously. I need to be thankful for the small adventures in my life. My advice to myself, and to you is this: ENJOY THE RIDE! Happy Thanksgiving!

ACTIVE APOSTLE SHOUT OUT!

JILL KINNISON You might recognize Jill Kinnison from the many hours she serves at both Sacred Heart Parish and Sacred Heart School! One way Jill gives back is by keeping the holy water fonts clean and

full. She shares this weekly task with Estolia Bernal. Jill shares her musical gifts in the Chancel Choir and participates in CFM and parish bible studies. She also attended the women’s Welcome weekend in September. Jill and her husband, Chris, recently went through the training to become a sponsor couple for those who are preparing for marriage. At Sacred Heart School, Jill is a member of the Board of Education and even serves as the Board’s Treasurer. Jill also gives back to Sacred Heart by working as the co-chair for the SCRIP program. Jill and Chris have two daughters, Sarah and Amanda, who attend Sacred Heart School. They also have a son, Isaac, who is often Jill’s little helper! As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we are SO THANKFUL for Jill Kinnison!

AROUND THE DIOCESE

NPM MASS AND MUSICIANS’ BLESSING Musicians, liturgists, pastors and guests: You are invited to join the Des Moines Diocese Chapter of the National

Association of Pastoral Musicians for a Mass and Musicians' Blessing on Sunday, November 24, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High Street, Des Moines, Iowa, 50309. Reception will follow at the Pastoral Center.

“The Veil Removed” is a five minute short film that visually shows what happens invisibly at the Mass.

Please bring all of your friends and family, especially those who need or want to get more out of Mass. This will be a wonderful opportunity to reignite love and understanding of God’s greatest gift to mankind, the Holy Eucharist.
