My story… • >20 years working with tech startups • Angel capital is largest source of early stage finance in UK
(£1.4bn in 2014) • Thought angels were very rich, very successful, old men • Until I made my first angel investment…
www.angelacade.me@AngelAcademe
Angel investors… • Meet HNW criteria, but not super-wealthy • Start with £10k and build a portfolio over time • The tax breaks mean you CAN’T loose all your £ • It’s the most stimulating thing I’ve ever done
BUT we have a diversity problem…. • Women control c50% of UK net wealth • Make/influence 80% consumer spending decisions • Control 40% enterprise spending • Yet only 3% UK VCs and 14% angels are women • Men are 86% MORE likely to attract VC & 59% MORE likely to
attract angel investment
www.angelacade.me@AngelAcademe
Women are missing out: • Networks & opportunities • Exposure to innovation & entrepreneurship • Financial return…the equity gap The investor community is missing out: • Risks group think • Misses vital connection to customers Startup community is missing out: • Harder for women to raise finance • Misses out on large talent & funding pool
www.angelacade.me@AngelAcademe
Angel Academe today • Award winning & with a unique proposition • ~100 members, ~70% women • 10 investments in women-led tech startups • First “exit” • New investors are guided by experienced ones • “Ecosystem” for women angels and entrepreneurs
• Angel training (Investor Academe) • Entrepreneur mentoring (Entrepreneur Academe)
www.angelacade.me@AngelAcademe
Please help • Promote angel investing to HNW women • Which are the right networks to talk to? • What are the messages that will work?
THANK YOU! [email protected]

THE UK HONOURS SYSTEM
The Network of Networks Gender Q2 Meeting – Charles Russell Speechlys LLP 27 April 2016
Today’s Presentation
1. Background, how the honours system works; perceptions and reality
2. Who gets honours? 3. How to nominate
18
Presentation title - edit in Header and Footer
How does the system work? Two lists per year: Birthday and New Year
Several elements: • Prime Minister’s list (c1300 names) • Defence Secretary’s list (200 names) • Foreign Secretary’s list (150 names) • Others (The Queen’s personal list, some overseas
countries)
20
Recent Reforms 1993 (John Major): • End of automaticity • Introduction of public nominations: now 10,000 enquiries a year, leading to 3,000 nominations
2005 (Tony Blair): • Independent Selection Committees. • PM passes recommendations direct to HMQ
2012 (David Cameron): • Philanthropy and Political Service Committees • Reintroduction of British Empire Medal

Who gets them? At New Year 2016 there were 1196 honours: 1044 (87%) were at OBE, MBE and BEM level 76% working in their local community in some way 48% were women (38% women at K/D/C levels) 5.7% from ethnic minority communities 12% from industry and the economy 25
Who do you know who deserves an honour? • Everyone knows one worthy candidate!
• Someone who has . . . – made an impact on their workplace/community – exemplified the very best sustained and selfless
voluntary service – gained the respect of their peers – changed things for the better – improved the lot of those less able to help
themselves
26
What makes a good nomination? • Describe what is special about your candidate’s achievements • How have they made a difference? • How have they have overcome obstacles or gone the extra mile? • How are they head and shoulders above their peers or a role model to others? • Don’t just produce a CV or job description!
27
Where do I start? Download a nomination pack from
www.gov.uk/honours
Or phone 020 7276 2777.
And be prepared to provide at least two independent letters of support.
Then be patient (though you can ring the Cabinet Office for a progress report) . . .
. . . and remember that not all nominations will succeed.
