When we see the commercials of visiting other places, none of the photos show the construction that is going on. Everything looks perfect and clean. The first reality is that nearly everything is under construction from roads to hotels and restaurants. The second reality is that the construction is needed. When planning to stay, the main criteria becomes when did they last remodel and update? Many old places have been abandoned and a new location built. It is interesting to find that God planned for the new to come out of the old. He planned for seasons when things would grow, die, and become new again. He did not try to repair the earth with patches so that the earth looked worn and falling apart. His natural process leads to renewal. God has made that possible for us. Not that we will never get old and slow down, but that we can experience his inner renewal. (2Cor 4:16) Eventually this body will be replaced with a new one that will work much better in a different realm. Many today are saying the church seems old and needs to be new. Our questions become about buildings and worship styles and what changes are possible. Will a new way of doing something make a difference? We are asking the wrong questions. The church is the collection of people of faith who serve and worship God. We should be asking about a renewed faith among the people of God. When is the last time you had a clearer understanding of God? When did your worship change as you sit in the same pew at the same building at the same time. We need a renewal of faith among the people of God. What was vibrant about the early church was not the buildings or the programs that were offered. It was the faith of the people that made everything new. When is the last time we renewed the way we serve God? Are we still expressing our faith the same way we did 20 years ago? Have we made no new advances in the faith we live? The church is a place where people are under construction. Some rebuild from the beginning. Some need to renew their faith. We are all building the new kingdom of God that is constantly being renewed in him.
