What is the project?

To help prepare you for life at GCSE in geography we have set you a series of tasks to work on before you arrive.

Each looks at different topics, ideas, skills and areas linked to the subject.

We want you to attempt task 1 and 2, with the option to take on the “Internet Geography” – Wider Summer Challenge is you wish.

Please read through all the tasks before starting them, so you know exactly what you need to include.

Finally, make use of the two resources we have provided to help with task 2 and task 3.

Task 1: A Geographical route to school

As part of your ‘daily’ exercise we would like you to create your route to Alleyne’s Academy. This could be digitally using google maps (as shown in the exampleabove) or it can be a hand drawn interpretation of your own (as seen on the example on the next slide).

When planning and creating your route we would like you to label a variety of different land uses (ways the land is used, for example, residential areas, commercial areas, business parks, open space, etc…).

Task 1: A Geographical route to school

Think about the geography in your work, such as the social (well being of people), economic (financial) and environmental (impact on the landscape) impacts.

Remember, impacts can be both positive as well as negative.

Task 1: A Geographical route to school

We would then like you to label three opportunities on the route, this could be for future business developments, areas available for environmental protection, places that could offer activities for young people, etc… For each of these we would like you to write why they are an opportunity.

Then we would like you to label three challenges and give reasons in the same way. These could be, traffic congestion, road safety issues, damage to the environment, vandalism, derelict land, etc…

Support your work with images, possibly taken from your mobiles while out and about (such as on the example above).

Task 2: Geography in the newsUsing the template provided (see example to the right) we would like you to explore 3 geographical news stories that appear in the news over the next few months.

We would like you to then research them and complete the template to summarise what it is in each story that makes them geographical. Think – what, where, why, when, who and how.

Task 2: Geography in the news

We also want you to create 3-5 geographical questionsthat the story has created for you, that you would now ask after researching it.

To develop your geographical thinking try to also complete the “synoptic links” section. The link on the template will give you more details on this concept.

Remember to think about the social, economic, and environmental issues within each story.
