Seraphim, finalists in Classic FM Christmas Carol Competition, has performed in Venice, London, Worcester Cathedral and with Norwich Baroque. PIANO CIRCUS 7.30pm Southwold Arts Centre £15 Enjoy one of the music world’s unique experiences: six pianos, performing music by leading contemporary composers. The group has performed in venues around the UK and internationally - the Barbican, Lincoln Centre and the BBC Proms. Piano Circus will include works by Graham Fitkin, David Lang, and Steve Reich. MONDAY 25 TH JUNE THE NOMAD’S PATH: TRAVELS IN THE SAHEL – ALISTAIR CARR 11.00am Southwold Arts Centre £7.50 This Suffolk based author, artist and explorer has lived and travelled in some of the planet’s most remote wildernesses. This is an account of a journey through a landscape where no Westerner had been seen in living memory. YOUNG MUSICIANS’ SHOWCASE SCHUBERT’S WINTERREISE – BENJAMIN HEWAT- CRAW (BARITONE) AND YUHAO GUO (PIANO) 1.15 – 2.00pm United Reformed Church £6 The duo will present the first half of the legendary song cycle Winterreise. They have taken part in the prestigious competition ‘Schubert and Modern Musicand have a busy concert programme together. A LIFE LESS VISIBLE – BEHIND THE MICROPHONE, BEHIND THE MASK – TERRY MOLLOY 3.00pm Southwold Arts Centre £7.50 Terry has been in The Archers and on TV as the notorious Davros, creator of The Daleks in Doctor Who. His first book for children was recently published and you will be able to meet its subject ‘Monty’. BOTTOMS UP! THE STORY OF WINE, ITS RITUALS & GLASSES – ANDY MCCONNELL 7.30pm Southwold Arts Centre £12.50 Enjoy The Antique Roadshow glass specialist’s light- hearted gaze at the story of wine and explore the paintings and artefacts, including drinking vessels, which have been created by great artists and craſtsmen to enhance the pleasure of wine and to impress guests. TUESDAY 26 TH JUNE RESISTANCE AND REVOLT: BOUDICCA, QUEEN OF THE ICENI – JAMES HARRISON 11.00am Southwold Arts Centre £7.50 How far was Boudicca a literary invention? Explore the causes and events of the Boudicca Rebellion in AD60 with Roman Historian and Headmaster of Saint Felix School. James has given talks on Roman History at universities and events throughout the UK. YOUNG MUSICIANS’ SHOWCASE TRUMPET & PIANO RECITAL – POLLY CHAN 1.15 – 2.00pm United Reformed Church £6 Twelve-year-old Polly is a pupil at St Felix School. She is a member of Aldeburgh Young Musicians, based at Snape Maltings, an organisation for talented young musicians aged 8-18. Polly will perform a wide range of music across her two instruments. PAINTING THE MODERN GARDEN – LYDIA BAUMAN 2.00pm Southwold Arts Centre £5 The Arts Society Southwold presents an illustrated talk on the paintings of Manet, Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Sargent, Van Gough, Klimt and Matisse. Lydia Bauman is an author, art historian and an experienced speaker for The Arts Society/Nadfas, The National Gallery and MFA Boston USA. CULT FIGURE – KENNETH WILLIAMS 7.30pm Southwold Arts Centre £15 Colin Elmer, who played Kenneth Williams in the 50th Anniversary Tour of Round the Horne, reprises his role in this brand new production, telling the great man’s story in his own words, using anecdotes, writing and material for which the comedy legend was so well-known. WEDNESDAY 27 TH JUNE ZEPPELINS OVER EAST ANGLIA – IAN WHITE 11.00am Southwold Arts Centre £7.50 Discover how the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service night air defence system overcame Imperial Germany’s Naval and Army Airship Divisions in the Zeppelin airship campaign over East Anglia from 1915 until 1917. YOUNG MUSICIANS’ SHOWCASE BASSOON RECITAL – FRANCESCA WARREN 1.15 – 2.00pm United Reformed Church £6 Francesca Warren, a bassoonist and pianist, studies at the Royal College of Music and has performed with the RCM Philharmonic, RCM Opera Orchestra, Orchestra Of The City, Arch Sinfonia, London Moonlight Symphony Orchestra and played for HRH Prince Charles. THE HANDS OF A GENIUS – GRAHAM SHORT 3.00pm Southwold Arts Centre £7.50 Graham’s engraving of The Lord’s Prayer on the head of a pin and da Vinci’s The Last Supper along the edge of a razor blade makes him one of the world’s top micro- artists. An entertaining presentation by the man who engraved the Jane Austen £5 notes. FOLK AT THE PAVILION - HANNAH SANDERS & BEN SAVAGE SUPPORTED BY THE JOHN WARD TRIO 7.30pm The Godell Pavilion £12 Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are a folk duo that look and sound classically timeless, yet feel refreshingly unique. Based in Cambridge, their debut album Before the Sun was nominated for many UK and international awards. Welcome to the Fiſth Southwold Arts Festival. When we stared at blank sheets of paper planning the first Festival in 2014, we did not dare to dream that it would be such a successful part of Southwold’s annual calendar. It is thanks to you that we are able to produce this eight-day celebration of the arts. 11.00am Southwold Arts Centre £7.50The nine-mile long, steam-powered branch line connecting Halesworth to Southwold transported local people, holidaymakers and freight. John will focus on the pleasures and art inherent in the Victorian steam railway, with particular reference to the Southwold line.

YOUNG MUSICIANS’ SHOWCASE COR ANGLAIS RECITAL – PENELOPE CARTER

1.15 – 2.00pm United Reformed Church £6The cor anglais is Penelope’s second instrument on her postgraduate conservatoire course. She has performed in many orchestras and ensembles and was the cor anglais soloist with Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra, London Graduate Orchestra, conducted by Sir Mark Elder.

This unique jazz group, a regular sell-out at Ronnie Scott’s and the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, will play soundtrack songs from popular films and include songs by Burt Bacharach, Steven Sondheim and John Dankworth.

FRIDAY 29TH JUNETHE SHRIEKING WOMAN OF SOUTHWOLD AND OTHER SEA SPIRITS – SOPHIA KINGSHILL

11.00am Southwold Arts Centre £7.50Sophia Kingshill, author of Mermaids, will explore East Anglian marine legend. The enduring symbol is the mermaid, which spans three thousand years, embracing ancient myth, medieval imagery of sin and lust, and Victorian fascination with the forbidden feminine.

Learn how Southwold became a place George Orwell loved and loathed. Ann Kronbergs will consider the people and places that influenced him and coincided with the writing and publication of his early work.

11.00am Southwold Arts Centre £7.50Waveney & Blyth Arts has invited Mark Cocker, naturalist, broadcaster, author and Norfolk resident, to share his passion for rivers and their wild inhabitants complemented by extracts from Translated by Reeds, performed live by the Halesworth Community Choir.

TOWARD THE SEA – A STORYTELLING CONCERT ANDREWS MASSEY DUO

2.00pm United Reformed Church £10Emily Andrews and David Massey present a flute and guitar concert that weaves a journey centred on the sea. Featuring pieces by Piazzolla, Schubert, Elgar, Takemitsu, Ibert and Delibes, with traditional folk songs.

Mica Paris is one of the UK’s finest and most respected female singers with a career full of Top 10 hit singles and albums. Collaborations with Prince and Jools Holland; incredible live performances and her own Radio 2 show make this a gig not to be missed.
