Objectives
For you to be able to: List characteristics of effective teamsIdentify causes and consequences of conflictDescribe the stages of team development
“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together
is progress, working together is success.”
~ Henry Ford
Causes of Conflict
• Aren’t peer staff too ‘fragile’ to handle the stress of the job?
• Don’t peer staff relapse?
• Can peer staff handle the administrative demands of the job?
(cont.)
Causes of Conflict (continued)
• Won’t peer staff cause harm to clients by breaking confidentiality or by saying the ‘wrong’ things?
• Won’t peer staff make my job harder, rather than easier?
Davidson and Harrington 2011
Consequences of Workplace Conflict
• Burn-out
• Co-optation
• Internalized Stigma
• Reduced Job Satisfaction
• Mentalism / Oppression
• Stress
• Termination
Win-Win Response
1. Think win-win (mutual benefit and cooperation)
2. Seek first to understand, then be understood (respect, humility, and authenticity)
3. Synergize (value difference and search for 3rd alternatives)
Adapted from Covey 2011
Two steps to achieving synergy
1. Would you be willing to search for a solution that is better than what either one of us has proposed?
2. Would you agree to a simple ground rule: No one can make his/her point until they have restated the other person’s point, to his/her satisfaction?
Adapted from Covey 2011
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view -- until you climb into his skin
and walk around in it." Atticus Finch -- To Kill a Mockingbird
~ Harper Lee
