HELP PRESERVE HISTORY! While making plans for the future of St. Francis de Sales church, the Project 2017 committee has been researching the past by s t u d y i n g v i n t a g e photos. Part of the church renovation goals involve bringing back some of the b u i l d i n g ' s o r i g i n a l architectural features. Built in 1892, the building has gone through several d i f fe rent remodel ing phases. If you have photos, past directories, old bu l l e t ins , pos tca rds , wedding pictures, news articles, etc. that you would like to share we would love to see them. We are using these things to inspire some of the design portions of our current project. We are also starting to create a collection that we hope to have on display next year for the 175th (!) celebration of the existence of St. Francis de Sales Parish. If you want to keep your treasures, we can borrow and scan them to make a copy. Please contact Martha Cucco, [email protected] to arrange to drop of any historical items. The next meeting for Project 2017 will be on Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. These are open meetings and all parishioners are welcome to attend.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Today is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, the beginning of Holy Week. In today’s second reading, Saint Paul writes: “Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8) During this week we will have the opportunity to enter more deeply into the mysteries of God’s saving love. What we do during the liturgies of Holy Week is not to reenact the historical events of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection, but to recall them in order to celebrate the mystery of God’s saving love and how that love transforms our hearts. On Holy Thursday, we will recall the Lord’s Supper and his example of service as he washed his disciples’ feet. On Good Friday we will venerate the cross and contemplate the love of Christ, who died for our salvation. At the Easter Vigil, we will celebrate Christ our Light, whose resurrection brings new life to all who believe. Please consult the schedule for the times of the Holy Week services. I’ll see you in church! God’s Blessings, Fr.

THE ONE MILLION CHALLENGE FOR THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY It is Palm Sunday. It is time to look back and remember what Christ has done for you. He had you on his mind 2000 years ago. What have you done for him lately? As Edmond Burke once said “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.” There are many opportunities to do just a little. If you read in the bulletin that there will be a bake sale, can you make something, can you help after the Mass that you attend for just a few minutes to sell items. Are you good at sewing, perhaps some of the Altar items need to be mended. Do you know someone in your neighborhood who needs a ride to the store or to church. The Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive is coming up at the end of April. Could you volunteer to stand or sit in front of the Piggly Wiggly, Walgreens or Wal-Mart and just greet people while holding a donation can. All we do is say “Good Morning or Good Afternoon” while holding the can. We do not ask for a donation. We just give them a friendly greeting and a smile. Many opportunities like this exist, just ask. Thank you. Questions? Contact Millie McCormick at (630) 310-4703.

BUT, we need your help! 50 to 60 people, men and women, friends and family, Catholic or non-Catholic, are needed, and welcomed, for each of the 3 days in the positions of food prep, cashiers, food handler, hosting and clearing tables, and general help. You must be 16 years old or older to work in the food tent. You must to be over 14 years old or older to work the parking areas—directing cars to open spots. If you are able to work a 3 to 4 hour shift or longer, one day or all three days, your assistance is needed and will be greatly appreciated. Application forms are will be available soon. All workers will be required to attend a food safety training session in June at Elkhorn. You’ll receive a free volunteer T-shirt that gets you free admission to the event and the satisfaction that you’ve shared time with friends to raise money for the renovation of our parish church. It will be fun, and, you’ll be providing a valuable service for a worthy cause. Please help us in this endeavor to raise money for our church. We need your time and talent! At Easter, we’ll assemble gift bags for women in need. -Submitted by the Human Concerns Committee

FAITH WITH A FACE-LORRAINE SHARKEY Lorraine was nominated for this volunteer spotlight series by one of her peers who felt she is well deserving of recognition for all that she does for St. Francis de Sales Parish and beyond. Moving here full time in 1998 from Northbrook, Illinois, Lorraine has worked as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, volunteered as a server/food maker at funeral luncheons, and oversees Adoration. Recently plagued by back issues, it’s hard for her to do some of the physical things that she used to do, so she has adjusted! She now makes phone calls to all of the funeral luncheon volunteers to let them know that a funeral luncheon is coming up (usually there is just a few days’ notice) to help organize who will bring food and

who will serve. She continues to oversee Adoration for an hour every Tuesday. And, she makes rosaries. Makes rosaries? ? That’s right; she orders the beads and materials from a religious goods company and crafts rosaries for the sick. Her sister, who lives in Brookfield, Connecticut, visits people in hospitals and has the rosaries on hand should they decide they want one. “They find this very comforting,” said Lorraine. What a wonderful ministry to help people find solace in God! Pictured here is an example of a rosary that she’s working on now. What is the best thing about St. Francis de Sales? “The people. Father Jim, Father Tom, all of the people that volunteer with me, all of the people that I call. They are all so nice and always willing to help”.

Thank you Lorraine for all that you do, and for being an example to others of how to be flexible and do what you are able to do! You are very much appreciated!
