What does the HDRC do?

Page 4: Welcome to the Department of Medicine

The HDRC is made up of representatives from each Section within the Department, the Sectional Representatives. The Sectional Representatives are responsible for the welfare of all research students within their Section.

The HDRC: approves all registration and interruption of studies applications. advises on policy matters relating to research student education and welfare. representatives are responsible for pastoral and administrative duties at a

sectional level. ensures that the proper supervisory arrangements have been made for all

research students. representatives act as mediators in cases of dispute between a student and a

supervisor. monitors and reviews reports on research student progress as well as Sectional

completion and submission rates .

You should all make sure that you know who your Sectional Representatives are as they will guide you through the assessment processes and are your first port of call should you have any problems.

Alternatively, if you don’t feel comfortable approaching your representative with an issue, for any reason, you should Hayley Kendall, Programme Manager, Research Degrees.

Pastoral care If a student is experiencing problems (eg with their

supervisor or personal reasons affecting their research degree progress), the first point of contact is their supervisor.

If this isn't appropriate, the student should contact their Section Rep or Hayley Kendall (Research Degrees Manager) who can help and offer advice, or refer the student to the appropriate Deputy Director or Director of Postgraduate Research.

All meetings remain confidential.
