Dear People of Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony Parish:
“Stay awake! You do not know on which day your Lord will come.”
(Luke 24:42)
Though for children it may seem like a long wait for Christmas, Advent is so full of
riches it is hard to take it all in in just four weeks. To help us enter into the graces of
this season our Sacred Worship Committee has chosen one word to focus on each week:
Watch. Prepare. Witness. and Rejoice.
Watch! Our theme for this first week is taken from the Gospel passage quoted above. Spiritually speaking
“sleep” is to become unconscious of what God is doing in the world. It is to grow numb to the beauty and
blind to the opportunity God has before us. The spirits of fear, doubt and anger put us to sleep. The Spirit of
Faith, Hope and Love keep us awake. To “Watch” we must remain alert. We must “Stay Awake.”
Again this Advent season our Social Concerns Committee awakens us to an opportunity God has placed be-
fore us to bring light into the darkness. The cabinet in front of Church with the sign “Our Cupboard is Bare”
expresses the need of the House of Mercy at this time. As you may know, our first family has moved in.
They are from Greenwood, where one child is in school and the other in pre-school. Six months ago they
were in a home of their own and living a very normal life. Then their lives were disrupted and they found
themselves without the means to secure shelter for themselves. They are already working hard to return to
independent living, though it will take some time.
The family has moved into the apartment adopted by St. Mary’s parish and people from St. Mary’s have
already been assisting the family in simple ways. If you would like to help, please contact Judy Morrow at
715-743-2885. Next weekend St. Mary’s is taking up its second, second collection for the House of Mercy.
They are taking this extraordinary action the first Sunday of every month.
Next Sunday we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation at 1:00pm at St. Anthony’s Church. Our
three parishes will be joined by St. Mary’s in Neillsville. Practice is this Wednesday, November 30th, at
7:00pm at St. Anthony’s. It is helpful if the sponsors can be present.
Speaking with Therese Hoeser and Diane Perko, who led the Confirmation Class along with Mark Brux for
St. Mary’s and Holy Family, I learned they were very impressed with the Candidates they interviewed these
past two weeks. Beth Kaiser and I have also been very pleased with the growth of the St. Anthony Candi-
dates. During this fall semester the Candidates are asked to journal and share experiences of service, prayer
and community. It opened our eyes to all of the good going on in the lives of these juniors. And it awakened
them to the presence and activity of God in their lives.
The Confirmation Retreat brought it all to a head. We traveled to St. Anthony’s Retreat Center in Marathon
and spent all of a Saturday and half a Sunday together. Fully present to each other and bathed in the beauty
of the place, hearts opened. Saturday evening the Sacrament of Reconciliation was celebrated followed by
the candidates receiving support letters from loved ones. There were tears and hugs everywhere. Sunday
morning we celebrated Eucharist. Each candidate stood and made a profession of faith in their own words.
As one of the adult chaperons said afterward, it is so reassuring to know where our youth are really at inside.
Thank you Therese Hoeser for organizing the retreat and awakening our young people to the presence and
power of God in their lives. I will proudly stand before Bishop Callahan next Sunday afternoon and testify
that our young people have faith and ask him to confirm that faith by laying his hands on them and anointing
them.
Lastly just a word of recognition to another group that is wide awake and alert to opportunities to serve. The
Holy Name Men at St. Anthony’s just finished building and installing new book racks on all of the pews.
You probably wouldn’t notice if not told about it because they so perfectly match the color and finish of the
pews. I’m sure the Holy Name Men would single out Jack Barrett as lead on this project.
Inspired by so many others, let us not lose hope, but Stay Awake!
Fr. Steve
