WelcomeTo the Belmont Hills Elementary Media Center Tour !

There are areas for attending special lessons and activities, using the computers, working in a group, checking out books, or just reading. Come here to learn and have a good time!1The Narrator

Hi!

My name is Media Mike, and Ill be taking you on a tour of the Belmont Hills Elementary School Media Center.

I hope you have fun and learn a lot!

Your tour will be guided by Media Mike. He is a narrator just like those you might find in some of your favorite books. Because hes the narrator, he knows everything! So, listen carefully because he will be introducing you to the your media center. 2When Can I Go?

The media center operates on a flexible schedule.

This meansstudents and teachers are welcome to access the media center at any time during the school day.

Whole class activities and instruction can also take place here.

The media center is available to every person in the school. Teachers and students can access the media center to checkout supplies at any time during the day. The media center can accommodate large groups of students and staff for lessons and special activities.3How do I get there?

Politely ask your teacher for a pass at an appropriate time.

Make sure the pass states the reason for your visit.

Coming to the media center is easy. It is open for the entire length of the school day. However, before coming, be sure to ask your teacher and write the reason for the visit on the pass. This helps because the media center can be used for many purposes (computer use, research, material checkout, etc.). 4Special Areas

Before we check out any materials, let me introduce you to the different areas and sections of the media center so you know what to do. There are spaces for group instruction and lessons, book checkout, and computer use. 5Group Instruction Area 1Large groups of students or staff can gather here to listen to a speaker or sit while reading or studying quietly.

When special speakers come to the media center, this is where whole classes or grade levels can gather to listen. Also, this area can be used for many other activities and purposes. Classes can meet here for instruction and lessons, or students can choose a seat and quietly read books before checking them out. At the beginning of the year, your class media center orientation may be held here.6Group Instruction Area 2Students can select a circle and participate in technology instruction or enjoy a read aloud activity !

This area is located very close to the computers. It provides a spot where group technology instruction can occur or a cozy space for classes to enjoy a story or visual media.7Computers & Technology AreaGrab a seat and search Destiny to look for a great book! orExplore educational software, research tools, and games!

The computers are a valuable tool for research and learning. If you are looking for a specific book, video, or resource, this is the place to check. Just click on the Destiny icon to access the online card catalogue or approved internet search engines, websites, and games. 8Book Checkout & Return DeskSay hello to Ms. Launey, Ms. Valenzuela, and Zoey!

They are here to help you checkout materials, conduct lessons, and answer any questions you might have!

The book checkout area is a friendly place where you can greet the media center staff and checkout books. When you have chosen the book or material you would like to borrow, just bring it to the book checkout desk before leaving. When it is time to return your books, remember to drop your book in this area first before selecting a new one.9Sections

Books are divided into many different genres and sections, so finding a book can be confusing if you dont know where to look. Fortunately, Destiny and the Dewey Decimal System are here to help. It is important to have a basic understanding of what each section offers. Here are some of the sections available in the media center.10Professional Development

Teachers use these books and materials to make learning exciting!

The first section I am going to introduce you to is the professional development section. This section is for teachers, and they can use it to gather important ideas and information for planning lessons.11Fiction

Fiction books are made-up stories.

Look here for some of your favorites!

The Fiction section is home to books that are made-up by the author or stories that are not true. Here, students can find some of their favoritesCaptain Underpants, Goosebumps, and Junie B. Jones. However, dont be afraid to explore a fiction book you have never heard of before; you just might like it! 12Nonfiction

Non-fiction books are stories that include facts.

This is a great place to research for an assignment.

The Nonfiction section is home to books that contain facts. Nonfiction books can include science books, history books, and how-to books among others. Come to this section to gather details for a report or assignment, or have fun reading about your favorite dinosaur or career. Dont forget that the fairy tale books can be found in the Nonfiction section! 13Everybody

Not ready for a chapter book?

Students of all ages can enjoy these books

The Everybody section includes books with beautiful illustrations that are easy enough for all reading levels to enjoy. Younger elementary students may be most comfortable selecting an Everybody book. Everybody books allow beginning readers to become enthusiastic about reading and gain independent practice.14Reference

Reference books are to be used in the media center only.

Look for the tall shelves!

Reference books must be available to media center visitors all of the time. These books are located on the tall shelves and cannot be checked out. Browse and enjoy while you are in the media center.15Big Books

Great when reading to a group!

I love the large print and pictures!

Big Books include fiction and nonfiction stories. These books are great when reading to a group of students. The pictures and large print will ensure everybody is listening and learning. 16Happy Birthday!

Hooray!!!

You get to pick a book!

One of the most special sections is the Happy Birthday book section. On your birthday, come to the media center to get your birthday book. Remember to thank your media center staff!17Goodbye!

I had fun!

I hope to see you at the media center soon!

Before leaving the media center, make sure you checkout your book or material with Ms. Launey or Ms. Valenzuela. Remember, if you have any questions, just ask! 18Wait!

Shabby job Media Mike!

You forgot the PROCEDURES!PROCEDURES?

What do you mean, Dewey Dan?

Uh oh! It seems like there is more! It appears that Media Mike has forgotten the procedure for selecting a book. Thanks, for helping us Dewey Dan!19Selecting a Book

Students must know the rules for selecting a book.

This is important, so books are in order and easy to find!

Dewey Dan is right, we must know how to appropriately select a book.20Procedure #1

Students must first drop off their old books!

This happens before selecting a new book.

Following procedures is our responsibility to each other. If we are responsible and do what is expected, everybody will have fun in the media center. Before you checkout new materials, you should first return books and resources that you have already borrowed. Returned items can be put in the book return slot at the checkout desk.21Procedure #2

Get a book marker!

I dont want my books out of order!

Book markers are located in the Spiderman bucket on the checkout desk. Before choosing a book, take one of these with you to help you look. Dewey Dan doesnt like it when the books get mixed up, so do your part!22Procedure #3

Mark your place with the book marker.

Then pick your book.

When you see a book you might like, put the book marker in beside it. We do this before taking the book from the shelf, so we remember where to put it back at if we decide not to keep it. 23Procedure #4

Find a good book!

Look as much as you like, but always use your marker!

Leave the book marker in place and look at the book. If you are sure you like it, take it to the checkout desk and return the book marker. If you dont like it, put the book back in its place and look some more.24Thank You

I hope you enjoyed the tour!See you soon!
