RECOMMENDED COURSE LOAD

Academic Success Warning/Probation Workbook

What is a credit? A credit is a measurement of college work which reflects the amount of credit given to a course. You can generally count one hour of class time weekly for each credit a course is assigned. Some colleges use the word “credit” and others use the word “unit.” They mean the same thing.

Example: MyCSN uses the term “units;” whereas, the CSN degree requirements use the term “credits.”

RECOMMENDED COURSE LOAD

How many credits should I enroll in when I am in Warning/Probation?

It depends on your unique situation. Students who are employed full-time (40 or more hours per week) should limit themselves to no more than 6 credits. If you are employed no more than 20 hours per week, you may sign up for 12 or more credits provided that you don’t have additional time commitments (e.g. child, spouse, outside activities, and etc.). If you are not employed, full-time coursework (12-19 credits) may be appropriate. However, if you under Warning/Probation, are a returning student or the subject is challenging then you should ease your way into the school routine by taking 6-9 credits per semester.

If you work or have other time commitments, use this chart to determine the recommended number of credits to take each semester. Keep in mind that summer sessions are shorter in length and accelerated (fast-paced).

The following chart is a valuable tool for students to estimate the amount of time needed to support a quality learning experience:

Work (Hr./Wk.) Recommended Credits

Per Semester

Estimated Study Time Total Hours per Week

40 6 12-18 58-64

30 9 18-27 57-66

20 12 24-36 56-68

10 15 30-45 55-70

0 18 36-54 54-72

Recommended study time per week: 2-3 hours per credit (e.g. 6 credits, study 12-18 hours a week)

DO’S & DON’TS FOR SCHEDULING

SAMPLE

DO & DON’T SCHEDULE:

New Student - John Smith has been placed on Academic Warning/Probation at the end of the 1st semester. The 1st semester is represented in the yellow box.

When selecting classes for the next semester while on academic warning/probation, it is best to repeat classes that you earned a failing grade (e.g.,”F”) in order to improve your GPA as quickly as possible. It is important to check your degree requirements to determine if the course(s) you are planning to repeat are applicable to your educational program.
