Grade Open House!!
5th Grade Goals
As a team, the teachers encourage students to work to their potential and help them achieve this
We hold students accountable for completing their work and being good citizens of Four Peaks
We work on getting students ready for upper grades and learning life skills
An exciting year of learning…
It will be a year of growth and lots of opportunities to learn academic and life skills
We combine a variety of in-school activities with some interesting field trips to enhance your child’s learning this year
Capturing Kids’ Hearts
Develop self-managing classrooms and decrease discipline issues through innovative techniques such as a social contract
Build classroom rapport and teamwork to create a safe, trusting learning environment
Develop students’ empathy for diverse cultures/backgrounds
Increase classroom attendance by building students’ motivation and helping them take responsibility for their actions and performance
‘Specials’
Each 5th grade class enjoys quarterly special area classes:
ART
MUSIC
PE (2 quarters)
General Music
Students will use their voice, their body, and rhythmic instruments to develop their musicianship.
Students will learn music fundamentals, music theory and even a little music history

Orme Dam Days at Ft. McDowell
We take a trip to Ft. McDowell to participate in the Orme Dam Days Education Event Program
Students learned about nature and the native culture at Ft. McDowell which we are lucky to have so close to us
It ties in with our Social Studies curriculum when we study early Native cultures

Trip to Halle Heart Center
Our trip to Halle Heart Center ties in to our Science curriculum
Halle Heart is run by volunteers and teaches students about the heart and the importance of a healthy heart

Colonial Day Activities
Each 5th grade classroom had different activities from Colonial times, for example:
Cross stitching
Quill pen writing
Making wampum and clay pinch pots
making horn books
Playing Colonial Games
Colonial Days Activities
Each class performs Colonial Day Plays
Ben Franklin & the Printing Press Museum
Our in-house field trip is a visit from Ben Franklin and his Printing Press Museum
Students learn many facts about Ben Franklin and his many accomplishments
The Printing Press Museum shows students how much work went into publishing items and the importance of the written language

Gravity Force Cars
Gravity force cars were designed by members of the Kiwanis Club of Fountain Hills
5th Grade students built and did investigations to see how different variables made their cars run more or less efficiently

D.E.A.R and S.S.R.
As teachers, we are trying to encourage our students to have a love of learning and reading
D.E.A.R stands for Drop Everything And Read and S.S.R. stands for Silent Sustained Reading
This gives students an opportunity to choose a book to read for pleasure
C5 - Community, Citizenship, Creativity & Careers in the Classroom
Each 5th grade class focused on and presented information about a historical document from our country’s beginnings
Each class established a business within our small community
Students interviewed for jobs, ran class businesses trying to pay off their business loans and were active consumers within the community

Title I Program The Title I program will provide your child
with supplemental instruction in the academic areas of reading and writing.
Small classes (Approximately 1:6 Teacher/Student Ratio)

Special Education/Special Ed. Placement
Teacher and/or Parent having concerns about student’s progress, the Student Study Team (SST) meets to discuss ideas/interventions.
After a period of time, the team may decide further data should be collected and reviewed, possibly including formalized testing to determine if student qualifies for special education services.
