IMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION

REGISTRATION

No registration is available Sunday morning for the 38, 49, or 87 mile events!

Your number tag If you preregistered, check the label on your tear tag for the correct name, gender, and age division. Report any corrections to the registration table.

Skater numbers are nontransferable Come to the registration table if you need to change a skater’s registration to someone else.

SUNDAY MORNING CLASSIC CENTER

START TIME: 7:00 AM SHARP for the 38 & 87 Mile Events! If you show up at 7:02, we’ll be gone. The course is not marked the first three miles because we are led out of town by a vehicle. There will be a rolling start, so don’t bunch up at the starting line. Do not skate in front of, or along side, the lead car. The lead car will gradually increase speed and allow the group to spread out.

Baggage DropOff & Checkpoint Boxes DropOff – 5:45 AM – 6:45 AM

Baggage Dropoff Put your name on your bag! Place your bags in either the 87 Mile Finish (Fourth Ward Skate Park) bag area, or the 38 Mile Finish (Dacula) bag area. Unclaimed or misdirected bags will be brought to Fourth Ward Skate Park, and will remain there until after the awards ceremony.

Checkpoint Dropoff Boxes These will be open in front of the Classic Center from 5:45 AM to 6:45 AM Sunday morning. For people who want personal food or drink delivered to Checkpoints, put your name on your personal stuff and place it in the box(es) labeled for the checkpoint you want (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6). At the checkpoint, you stop and get your own stuff from the checkpoint box.

Please remember you MUST wear your helmet (properly fastened on your head), wrist protection, and carry personal ID – such as a driver’s license or your health insurance card.

A2A Official Rules are available at the registration table; they are also posted on the wall at registration. Each checkpoint & finish line will have a copy of the rules available should there be any questions.

Where do you put your numbers? With the enclosed pins, attach the Large Number on your Right Hip, attach the Medium Number on your Left Hip (give one of the tearoff tags to the attendant at the finish line). There are two Small

Numbers with peeloff backing mount one number on each side of your helmet. Do not cut or fold down your numbers! Parking in Athens Please DO NOT park anywhere on Washington Street (even the open section). Your car will be in the way of our skaters. For a nominal fee, you can park at the deck on Hancock, between Thomas & Jackson. For the fastest getaway to Checkpoint #1, you can park on Broad Street at Thomas St., heading west. Refer to map of Athens on the back of the route map.

Road Closures at Start You will not be able to drive to the Classic Center Sunday morning! Thomas Street (right in front) will be closed for two blocks between Broad Street & Hancock Street. Hancock Street (the road we start on) will be closed for one block between Thomas Street & Jackson Street. See map of Athens for details.

RULES FOR CARSPrivate support vehicles ARE FORBIDDEN on the Athens To Atlanta route they endanger our skaters. Maps and directions are provided for alternate routes which intersect the skate route at checkpoints. Skaters will be disqualified if their support vehicle does not abide by these rules. Please report violators in writing to the timing official at either of the finish lines.

Driving directions are available at the registration table. The directions will instruct spectators, friends, and family how to get around the course without endangering skaters. You may drive from checkpoint to checkpoint, stop, park, and walk up to the checkpoint to watch skaters go by. Or better yet, drive to the finish line and wait for your skater. We ‘sweep up’ any stragglers.

Parking at checkpoints will be tight Checkpoints are just places on the side of the road. Pull as far off the roadway as possible. Obey any No Parking signs. Drivers do not have special permission to break the law. Cars are the biggest problem of this event. Please be courteous to all.

* * * CAUTION: VEHICLES HAVE BEEN TICKETED FOR VIOLATING TRAFFIC LAWS * * *

THE ROUTE

A Map with Turn Sheet is included in your packet.

Route Marking The route is marked with yellow S’s and arrows painted near the right edge of the road. Yellow Sarrows are painted before every turn, and after every turn. An example of the course mark is on display at Registration. 87 Mile Finish skaterswhen you get close to Atlanta, do not confuse our yellow Sarrows with the bus routes (yellow numberarrows). Bear in mind that a turn mark could be hidden by a car at waiting an intersection, so use your map also.

You will be skating on open roads This means the roads are not closed to normal traffic. Roads are closed to our friends & family—we want our skaters to experience as little traffic as possible. We use the least trafficked route to Atlanta, and Sunday morning is the least trafficked time of the week.

POLICE ARE NOT ON THE COURSE TO HELP YOU CROSS BUSY INTERSECTIONS The police are there to provide for public safety in the most dangerous intersections, but YOU MUST BE PREPARED TO STOP AND FOLLOW ALL GEORGIA TRAFFIC LAWS AT ALL TIMES: YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT! Although some police may choose to direct you through an intersection against a red light, do not assume all of them will do this. Plan to stop at stop signs/signals as if you were a motorized vehicle. Please thank these officers as you go by, and help them feel welcome. We want them on our side!

There are six Checkpoints along the way The six checkpoints provide water AND fruit (bananas or oranges), and encouragement. Water is in plastic bottles. Please do not litter out on the course: carry your empty bottles to the next checkpoint for disposal.

Page 5: Welcome to the 38th Annual Athens to Atlanta Road …2 38th Annual Athens to Atlanta Road Skate - SAT.-SUN., October 5-6, 2019 A huge Thank You to our Super and Skater Sponsors that

PLEASE DO NOT LITTER! When empty, water bottles are very light – stick them in your shorts!

If you drop out of the event Report to the nearest checkpoint and have a volunteer write down your number and name on their checkpoint roster.

THE FINISH

No Chip Timers A2A will have a ‘manual’ finish at the finish lines. It is essential that you maintain orderoffinish as you channel through the chute until the tags are collected and the order recorded.

Finish line procedures After you cross the finish line, enter the chute and immediately slow to a stop. At the 38 Mile Finish, the finish chute is on the right. WE DO RECORD TIES When you cross the finish line with a buddy, hold hands and we’ll score you as an intentional tie.

87 Mile Finish skaters DO NOT go through 38 Mile finish chute. Stay LEFT to bypass the chute. Checkpoint 3 is immediately after the 38 Mile Finish; you can stop after the 38Mile finish chute if you need supplies.

You are scored for the event you entered If you enter the 87 miles, but stop at the 38 mile point (or any point shy of the 87 Mile Finish Line), you are scored as DNF—did not finish. If you enter the 38 Mile event and want to keep going, you may, but you will not receive an official time for the 87 miles, AND you must first stop and have the Official write down your number & name at the 38 Mile finish.

Mug pickup Coffee Mugs are awarded to all that finish their distance. Your small number will be marked for you to receive your mug. All mugs will be available for pickup at the Fourth Ward Skate Park until 4:30 PM; they will then be available again at the Awards Ceremony.

Transportation from 38 Mile Finish (Dacula) Official transportation is no longer provided. Please get a ride with someone there, use Uber or Lyft, or call Gwinnett Taxi Cab, 7708061902.

38th Annual Athens to Atlanta Road Skate - SAT.-SUN., October 5-6, 2019

GIRSA Event Rules and Regulations

Thank you for participating in the oldest and most famous road skate in America – indeed, in the world. Athens to Atlanta is not a race: it is a friendly road skating event held with many highly competitive participants, and prides itself on being viewed as a Gentlemen's Event. All participants skaters, athletes, volunteers and guests should govern their behavior accordingly.

I. General Rules

1. Safety Equipment1.1 Wearing a properly fastened helmet that meets current ASTM, U.S. CPSC, or Snell bicycle helmet standards is required. Gloves,

wrist guards, knee and elbow pads are recommended. Skaters should feel free to use any other protective gear during the skate. 1.2 Use of brakes for all skaters is strongly recommended. AthenstoAtlanta is a Rain or Shine event, and skaters should be mindful

of the increased risks of skating demanding, longdistance open road events (in traffic) with significant downhills when there is any chance of rain on the course.

2. Hydration & Nutrition 2.1 Skaters should be adequately prepared for an arduous physical challenge: the 38 Mile event is approximately the equivalent of a

running a marathon; the 87 Mile event demands the same stamina of an athlete completing a triathlon. All athletes should take special efforts to identify and meet their hydration and nutritional needs during the course of any of these events.

3. Starting Procedure3.1 Skaters should line up to begin the event according to ability. This is done on the honor system. Skaters who expect to finish the

38 Mile distance in 22 ½ hours or the 87 Mile distance in less than 5 hours should line up at the front of the starting chute. Skaters that wish to begin the event at a more leisurely pace are encouraged to start towards the rear.

3.2 The event will start promptly at 7:00 am for the 87 and 38 Mile distances and at 9:30 am sharp for the 49 Mile distance. The starting locations for each event may differ. It is the skater's responsibility to be at the correct Starting Line in time for the start.

4. Conduct4.1 Zero Tolerance All participants, including skaters and guests of the skaters, are expected to conduct themselves in a courteous

manner: there will be Zero Tolerance of abusive, assaultive, bullying, intimidating and/or verbally assaultive behavior of any kind, including foul language, striking another skater, pulling, pushing, blocking and/or shoving before, during or after the event.

4.2 Disrespect Public disrespect for others, including organizers, police officers or officials will not be tolerated and may be grounds for declassification or disqualification of the skater, and/or removal of the skater and/or his/her guest(s) from the premises of the event without reimbursement of any fees or costs.

4.3 Body Contacta) Incidental Contact: Body contact is expected on such a long event. This is different from the pushing and blocking that

is explained above. Incidental body contact occurs when a faster skater suddenly comes upon a slower one, perhaps on a downhill and they place a hand on the back of the skater in front. As long as the front skater does not object, this is acceptable behavior.

b) NonIncidental Contact: Nonincidental contact is strictly prohibited and is cause for declassification or disqualification and is defined as:1) Intentionally touching another skater to block or impede that skater – including holding or pulling 2) Contact that causes a skater to be involuntarily moved or dislodged from his/her position – including pushing,

bumping or tripping3) Contact that is made when a skater makes no effort to avoid contact with another skater that causes a skater to be

involuntarily moved or dislodged from their position – including running into another skater5. Rules of the Road

5.1 Skaters are reminded that we share the road with vehicular traffic and we skate with the good graces of local law enforcement agencies. We must always be polite to all officers and officials and follow traffic laws wherever possible. Police are stationed at major intersections to help the flow of traffic and to give skaters right of way, however you must follow their directions and stop if they ask you to do so. This is for your own safety. Please be courteous to vehicles and pedestrians and make appropriate hand signals when you intend to turn.

6. Route and Route Changes6.1 The route is well marked on the road. Additionally, all skaters are provided with Turn Sheets and Maps in their registration packet

and are required to attend the preevent meeting to discuss any last minute route changes. Skaters are therefore responsible for their own route. A2A and GIRSA are not responsible for any misdirection a skater may receive.

7. Route Cutting7.1 Skaters who take unfair advantage by changing their route to shorten their distance, or do not complete the entire distance under

their own skating power, are subject to disqualification.8. Drafting

8.1 For Competitive Skaters, see Section II, 2.01. For all other skaters, you may skate together and help each other. For the fitness skaters, who are not interesting in making the road skate competitive, skating together is encouraged.

8.2 Drafting behind motorized vehicles or bicycles is strictly prohibited. If an A2A volunteer or a GIRSA official observes such behavior during the event, you may be disqualified from receiving a placement recognition, and may be ruled a DNF (Did Not Finish).

9. Course Police9.1 GIRSA has engaged police support for a reasonable amount of time along the route, but this police presence is not meant to imply

that this is a closed or otherwise protected course, or that there is a lesser risk in participation in this event than would exist without the presence of police, or than there otherwise might be. A2A is not a race, but participants in A2A and other GIRSA events chose to participate at their own risk – regardless of the presence or lack of presence of police or other course support. A2A is held on open public roads that are not closed to traffic, and as such, skaters acknowledge the implicit risks of participation. When police or other such personnel or volunteers, or Course Vehicles, are not available, skaters must act responsibly– including stopping their participation in the event. Skaters who cannot complete the course in a reasonable amount of time should clear the course (see “Completing the Event” and “Course Vehicle or Sag Wagon Procedures”).

10. Completing the Event

Page 8: Welcome to the 38th Annual Athens to Atlanta Road …2 38th Annual Athens to Atlanta Road Skate - SAT.-SUN., October 5-6, 2019 A huge Thank You to our Super and Skater Sponsors that

 8

38th Annual Athens to Atlanta Road Skate - SAT.-SUN., October 5-6, 2019

10.1 Skaters who cannot complete the course within the allotted time should clear the course, stop skating and wait for a Course Vehicle, or any police or emergency vehicle or other available safe option for transportation. Participants who chose to continue skating and chose not to clear the course are disqualified and are no longer participants in A2A: they proceed wholly on their own authority and with no association or relationship with GIRSA or A2A.

10.2 Skaters who are picked up by a Course Vehicle will be transported to a Finish Line. 10.3 Skaters who are picked up by a Course Vehicle are ineligible to receive final placement recognition.

II. Additional Rules for Competitive SkatersIn addition to the Gentlemen's Rules mentioned throughout this document, Competitive Skaters must follow certain other rules to ensure fair competition for everyone involved. 11. Definition: Competitive Skater

11.1 You are considered a Competitive Skater if:a) You line up at the front of the pack for any distance, orb) You skate at an average speed of greater than 18 mph, orc) You exhibit competitive or aggressive behavior during the event, ord) You selected a Competitive Skater category on your entry form.

11.2 If you meet any of the above criteria, you are a Competitive Skater, and you MUST adhere to the following Additional Rules for Competitive Skaters (in addition to the General Rules above). Finish placements may be determined by the ability of the skater to follow these rules.

12. Drafting12.1 Drafting behind a motorized vehicle of any kind or a bicycle is strictly prohibited and may result in declassification or

disqualification. 12.2 You may not be taken in tow by another competitor or aid another competitor with a push.

13. Passing13.1 Passing must be done cleanly and without body contact. The lead skater has the right of way, with his/her lane being the width of

the body in a straight line in front of the skater. The passing skater must assume responsibility for a clean pass and avoid body contact. Intentionally pushing or shoving another skater may be cause for declassification or disqualification of the offending skater.

14. Blocking14.1 When being passed, intentionally blocking or impeding the passing skater is also cause for declassification or disqualification. 14.2 On a straight road, the lead skater must maintain his/her lane and not move into the lane of the passing skater. 14.3 On a curve, the lead skater may skate the line of the road, but may not attempt to cut off or block the passing skater.

15. Officials15.1 During the event, several judges appointed by GIRSA may be positioned along the route to watch competitors. 15.2 Blocking, nonincidental contact and other personal fouls on the part of the skaters may be penalized at the discretion of the

judges or event officials, up to and including declassification or disqualification.16. Support Vehicles

16.1 Private support vehicles are forbidden on the Athens to Atlanta route. Maps and directions are provided for alternate routes which intersect the skate route at checkpoints. Skaters will be disqualified if their support vehicle does not abide by these rules.

17. Finish Line Procedure17.1 Two judges will be present at the Finish Line to observe the first male and female finishers to ensure that they follow the rules of

conduct when finishing the event. 17.2 At the finish of an event, all skaters entering the last straight way must continue in a straight line to the Finish Line. Under no

circumstances may skaters push, cut in front of or favor other competitors.17.3 An official Event Camera shall be placed at each Finish Line to view the finishers for the top male and female skaters. 17.4 Should any Finish be in doubt, this camera's record (and only this record) will be reviewed by the Finish Line Judges. 17.5 A determination will be made upon review of the film and presented to a preselected subset of the GIRSA Board of Directors for a

final decision. The decision of the board is final.18. Protests

18.1 A Protest is a complaint filed by a registered skater in a GIRSA event against another registered skater in a GIRSA event, alleging that such person has violated one of the rules stated herein.

18.2 A Protest shall be filed reasonably soon after the facts upon which it is based are known to the competitor. 18.3 The Protest must be filed with the GIRSA representative designated to receive such Protests. This will be announced prior to the

event.18.4 It is the skater's responsibility to be present at the required meeting in which such announcement is made. 18.5 The Protest shall be submitted in writing on the appropriate form and signed by the complainant. It must contain the name of the

protested skater and a brief statement of the facts upon which the Protest is based. It must be clearly stated which rule was allegedly violated and what proof is offered for the violation. A Protest fee of $25 will be collected. Should the Protest be upheld, the Protest fee will be returned to the protestor.

18.6 The Protest will be received by the designated GIRSA official and presented to a committee consisting of a subset committee of the GIRSA board. The GIRSA board may also include any judging officials as are deemed necessary.

18.7 The investigation, determination, and decision process to determine the validity of a Protest will conducted in a timely manner.18.8 The GIRSA Board will also offer the person against whom the Protest was made the opportunity to state his/her case in writing for

consideration.18.9 The decision of the committee will be final and will be placed on the Protest Form with a copy of the form provided for the

protester. The decision will be announced in as timely a manner as possible.

Thank you for maintaining the decorum of this event: your professionalism, courtesy and support of fair play are the very spirit of Athens to Atlanta.
