Welcome to the 10th Annual
Fidelity Investments Park City Jazz Festival
This year we celebrate the culmination of a ten-year partnership
with the Park City Jazz Foundation with the 2007 Fidelity
Investments Park City Jazz Festival, and what a terrific decade it’s
been! We’ve enjoyed hosting many of the biggest names in jazz –
from Ray Charles and Ray Brown to George Benson and Natalie Cole
– in one of the most spectacular venues in the world.
The tremendous growth and success of the Festival has surpassed
all of our expectations. The PCJF continues to expand its
internationally acclaimed jazz education programs and inspire
thousands of young jazz musicians. We’re extremely pleased with
our investment and believe the PCJF is strongly positioned to
execute its mission well into the future.
One of Fidelity’s guiding principles for community support is
helping non-profit organizations grow, mature, and become
financially sustaining. Fidelity has sponsored the Festival from its
inception and during the past ten years we’ve directed resources
enabling the PCJF to strengthen its organizational structure, develop
organizational capacity, foster sustainability, and strategically plan for
the future. The timing is right for Fidelity to pass the baton to new
sponsors and benefactors who will take the Festival into a glorious
second decade.
Fidelity extends its sincere gratitude to the Park City Jazz
Foundation, its dedicated board of trustees and professional staff,
our fellow Festival sponsors and the hundreds of Festival volunteers
and patrons who have nurtured and shaped the dream of two
visionary Park City citizens into one of the most exciting jazz
expositions in the country.
The 10th Fidelity Investments Park City Jazz Festival will be the best
ever and provide a perfect segue for a marvelous second decade of
music in the mountains.
Cheers!

Fat Soul
Sunday, August 26th, 2:00 p.m.
Led by local favorite award-
winning saxophonist and
educator, David Halliday Fat Soul
was founded in April 2003. This
band plays soul jazz with classic
funk all mixed with a New
Orleans vibe.
Headlined by the following
musicians: David Halliday on
saxophones; Jeremy Abernathey
on vintage keyboards; Tom
Hopkins on guitar; Buddy T.
singing vocals; Randy Herbert
on drums; and, Steve Bauman
playing bass.
Fat Soul provides high energy
party music that truly exemplifies
the improvisational nature of jazz
music. It’s spontaneous!
Henry Butler

Sunday, August 26th, 4:15 p.m.
Just nominated
for his seventh
straight Blues
Foundation,
"Pinetop
Perkins Piano
Player of the
Year" award
(formerly the W. C. Handy
Awards), Henry Butler knows no
limitations. Although blinded by
glaucoma since birth, Butler is
also a world class photographer
with his work displayed at
exhibitions throughout the
United States. Playing piano
since the age of six, Butler is a
master of musical diversity.
Combining the percussive jazz
piano playing of McCoy Tyner
and the New Orleans style
playing of Professor Longhair
through his classically-trained
wizardry, Butler continues to
craft a sound uniquely his own.
A rich amalgam of jazz,
Caribbean, classical, pop, blues
and R&B influences, his music is
as excitingly eclectic as that of
his New Orleans birthplace.
While his early albums were jazz
trio recordings featuring such
top-notch instrumentalists as
Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins,
on Fivin’ Around in 1986, and Ron
Carter and Jack DeJohnette, on
The Village two years later, Butler

has increasingly turned to New
Orleans music and the blues. His
1990 album, Orleans Inspiration,
recorded with Leo Nocentelli of
the Meters, was followed by
Blues And More in 1992.
Although he briefly returned to
jazz with For All Seasons in 1996,
he’s remained immersed in the
blues since releasing Blues After
Sunset in 1998.
Collaborating with Corey Harris
on a duo album, Vu-du Menz, in
2000, Butler spent the next three
years touring with the Delta
blues-influenced guitarist/
vocalist. That fascination with
the blues has continued to be
reflected in his solo work. After
releasing a power-packed, all
electric, blues-rock, album, The
Game Has Just Begun, in 2002 on
the New Orleans based indie
label Basin Street Records,
Butler took things even deeper
with his latest outing on that
label, Homeland, released in April
2004.“This album was a real
turning point,” he said.“It was
the first time that I’ve brought a
blues and R&B band into the
studio with me. On this record,
I’m feeling closer to my roots.”

and development, yet still hungry
– eager to explore the possibilities
of his instrument and his abilities.
David Sanborn is both musician
and artist – that rare breed of
popular recording star as eager
today as he was in his youth to
continue pushing boundaries
and to continue making music
that challenges the mind as it
rewards the heart and soul.
Tower of Power –

Friday, August 24th, 8:00 p.m.
No matter who you are,
where you live, or your taste in
music, Tower of Power will find
you. And once that happens,
it’s all over.
You will come to believe no only
that soul music is the salvation
of us all, but that Tower of Power
is one of those rare bands who
can claim to be the real deal, 100
proof, aged-to perfection,
ground zero Soul.
And the thing is, they’re
everywhere now.
But the truest testament to Tower
of Power remains the band’s
formidable concert appearances.
Stand in front of the stage at their
show and bathe in the sonic blast
of brass and funk.“Tighter than a
clenched fist,” says The Hollywood
Reporter “ For almost two hours,”
gushes The Fresno Bee,“the band
members let loose with an
energy-filled show that left a sell-
out crowd on its feet, dancing in
the aisles and applauding with
feeling for a band it’s loved for
more than 25 years.”

John, Santana, Bonnie Raitt,
David Sanborn, Michelle

orchestral funk are monuments
to the enduring stature of soul.
Their vibe is contagious, happy,
life-asserting, a wondrous

Widely
heralded as a
gifted young
player with
a passionate
sound, jazz-
guitarist Corey
Christiansen
took up the instrument at the
age of five under the direction
of his father, Mike Christiansen,
Chairman of Guitar Studies at
Utah State University. Corey
earned a bachelor’s degree
in music from Utah State
and a master’s degree in
jazz performance from the
University of South Florida.
Awakening, Corey’s first CD
as a leader, was the initial
release on Mel Bay Records,
the entertainment-recording
division of Mel Bay Publications.
Awakening spent twelve weeks
on the JazzWeek chart, reaching
number sixteen in March 2005.
The title track, an original
composition, consistently
receives the most airplay from
the recording.
Recently Corey had the
opportunity to visit Australia for
a two-week tour of stores and
conservatories. He has also
performed at many notable
festivals and venues including
John Pisano's Guitar Night in
Los Angeles, the Smithsonian

Soulbop –

Saturday, August 25th, 4:45 p.m.
Straddling
the line
between
funk and
jazz,
Soulbop
was con-ceived by veteran trumpeter Randy
Brecker and ex-Miles Davis saxophonist Bill
Evans in response to Bob Berg’s untimely
death, which scuttled Brecker’s touring plans
for 34th N Lex (ESC, 2003). Brecker and Evans’
2003 tour with their newly formed Soulbop
Band turned out to be one of those
unexpected positives that sometimes
emerge out of tragedy—so successful, in
fact, that a 2004 European tour was booked,
finishing up with a triumphant week-long
run at New York’s Iridium club.
The band’s name really does say it all. Some
songs are pure soul, like Evans’ homage to
Eddie Harris, Cool Eddie, and the staggered
funk of Dixie Hop. But while bassist Victor
Bailey and drummer Steve Smith are
completely comfortable laying down
visceral grooves, they’re equally capable of
swinging hard, as they do during Evans’
powerful soprano solo on Soul Bop.
Ultimately what makes Soulbop so
successful is its ability to effortlessly shift
McConnel, Sid Jacobs, Jack Wilkins, and
Danny Gottlieb.
Russell Gunn –

Friday, August 24th,
7:00 p.m.
If one were attempting to
design a prototype for the
quintessential
contemporary musician in
the African-American
tradition, trumpeter/
fluegelhornist/ composer
Russell Gunn would be an
ideal model. A certified member of the hip-
hop generation by age (born in 1971) and
geography (East St. Louis), Russell's early
aspirations in the world of rap music took
precedence over the trumpet that he
began playing in fourth grade. When he
reached sixteen, his dedication to the art of
jazz took shape.
Rather than abandoning the music he
loved, he simply applied its energy, spirit
and fiercely proud intellectual rage to the
jazz idiom, creating a synthesis that is truly
contemporary and singular, exemplified by
his groundbreaking group, Ethnomusicology.
As the name clearly indicates, Gunn, like
most of the finest young musicians to
emerge in the past decade, has developed
his music from a wide variety of musical
influences. In his case, Gunn weaves together
elements of Cuban, Brazilian, African, D.C.'s
"Go Go" music, and Hip-Hop into an
adventurously progressive jazz style that
pays tribute to its tradition while also
extending the form.
With a singular style that incorporates the
influences of masters like Freddie Hubbard,
Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, and especially the
extremely underrated Booker Little, Gunn

A graduate of the Berklee
College of Music in Boston, MA.,
Eric had achieved the highest
proficiency rating given by the
school. In 1995, Eric was
awarded the BerkleeDistinguished Alumnus Awardfor outstanding achievements
in contemporary music.
After moving to Los Angeles in
1980, Eric auditioned for famed
New Orleans trumpeter Al Hurt.
He got the gig, moved to New
Orleans and played with Al and
his band for about a year. He got
the gig, moved to New Orleans

While playing at a club in North
Hollywood, Eric looked up from
the stage to see jazz legend Chick
Corea walk through the door.
Chick had been one of Eric's very
favorite all-time musicians. "When
I looked up and saw Chick walk in
I thought I must be
hallucinating!" Chick was a friend
of John's so Eric figured he was
there to see John's band. But
unbeknownst to Eric, Chick was
looking to add a sax player to his
famed Elektric Band with bassist,
gears, often in the same song.
Brecker has always been able to
take funk to an outer zone, and
Evans is just as able to rein things
in, though he has an equally
broad vernacular. Purists on both
sides may have a problem with
Soulbop’s integrated aesthetic,
but for those who like their jazz
with a heavy dose of funk and
fusion energy, Soulbop Band Live
is just what the doctor ordered.

Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood
www.mmw.net
Saturday, August 26th, 5:00 p.m.
It's a match
made not
above nor
below,
but rather in
some
altogether hipper, funkier place.
We're talking John Medeski, Billy Martin, and
Chris Wood, plus guitar guru John Scofield. On
their new release OUT LOUDER, they make
music not of this world, yet rooted in the earth
tones of jazz, funk, and blues. Music from the
heart, for the mind, and made to shake the
earth, not to mention the body.
Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood first
recorded together on Scofield's A Go Go
(Verve 1998), a disc that has become a must-
have classic. That project united jazz guitarist
Scofield with the improvisational jazz trio
Medeski Martin and Wood on material
composed by Scofield and interpreted by all
four musicians.
It’s been nearly a decade since A Go Go
singlehandedly placed the guitarist on the
radar of a younger and enthusiastic
demographic.
That, and the four musician's yen for jazz, funk,
rock, soul and reggae, go a long way towards
explaining why OUT LOUDER's deep grooves
and sophisticated harmonies beg for closer
inspection while simultaneously making you
want to get up and dance.“People connect
with grooves and funk, they feel it in their
gut,” says Medeski. “We understand complex
harmonies, but in the end we know that you
don't have to play all those notes to connect
with people. The groove and spirit is what
connects with people.”

Craig Chaquico
Saturday, August 26th, 2:45 p.m.
Reaching the top of the
national charts during the
'70s and '80s, guitarist/
songwriter Craig Chaquico
played lead guitar and
wrote songs with the
popular gold and platinum
million selling bands
Jefferson Starship and Starship from 1973-
1990. Now, Chaquico is an award winning
solo artist selling more than a million copies!
His album, Acoustic Planet, knocked Yanni
from the #1 slot on the charts. For four
consecutive decades, Chaquico has topped
the national charts in four separate musical
categories, because jazz is a big word.
At 12-years-old, Chaquico started playing
guitar in a hospital bed after a car accident
broke both arms, his wrist, thumb and leg.
Wearing a fake mustache and pretending to
be 14-years-old, Chaquico started playing in
nightclubs. At 16, he played with Jefferson
Starship and recorded with Grace Slick.
Instrumental in making the Jefferson Airplane
and Jefferson Starship one of the top 10 most
successful acts in history, Chaquico has hit #1
as a solo artist while touring nationally.
Chaquico is one of the only guitarists on
tour today who can boast playing at the
top of the charts in four decades crossing
into classic rock, ‘70s rock, ‘80s rock, ‘80s pop,
soft rock, easy listening, and, of course, jazz.
Get ready for some tasty award winning
acoustic guitar along with electric rockin’
classic hits with Craig Chaquico.
